Azkals' oldest member retires: report

MANILA, Philippines – Yanti Bersales, the oldest member of the Philippine Azkals, has decided to retire from international football.

"I've spoken to Dan [Palami, the National Team manager,] about it," Bersales said in a blog written by football enthusiast, Roy Moore.

"At 38, I'm struggling [to keep up with the regular demands of football]," added Bersales, who is also a member of the Philippine Air Force Football Club (PAF-FC).

Bersales made his decision following the PAF-FC's title victory in the United Football League (UFL) on Wednesday.

This means he will not be joining the Azkals when they play against Sri Lanka in the FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The first of the 2-leg qualifier will take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka on June 29.

The 2nd leg will be staged at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila on July 3.

Bersales, a staff sergeant in the PAF, is one of several Azkals players from the Philippine military.

Other PAF-FC players who are also members of the National squad are Azkals co-team captain Emilio "Chieffy" Caligdong and Ian Araneta.

Indonesian body dodges football ax

PHILIPPINE football officials yesterday breathed a sigh of relief after Indonesia was spared from suspension by FIFA, the world governing body for soccer, which decided to give the country another chance to set its football affairs in order.

The football community in the Southeast Asian region was worried on the status of the football in Indonesia after the Indonesian Football Association or PSSI, failed to hold an election this month.

According to reports published by the Jakarta Globe, FIFA deferred from sanctioning the PSSI, but set conditions for the temporary reprieve.

FIFA has ordered the PSSI to once and for all hold an election on or before June 30 to end the leadership crisis in the association.

Agum Gumelar, chairman of the PSSI’s normalization committee, and PSSI acting secretary general Joko Driyono, were informed of FIFA’s decision during a meeting on Monday with Thierry Regenass, FIFA’s director of member associations and development committee and committee member Frank van Hattum.

Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, who is in Zurich to attend the FIFA Congress, earlier said that Indonesia’s bid to host football in the SEA Games will be affected by the leadership problem hounding the Indonesian football association.

The fate of the men’s football competitions in the SEA Games will now depend on whether the PSSI can successfully solve its leadership crisis through the mandated election.

If the PSSI still fails to resolve its leadership crisis, FIFA may suspend the football competitions in the SEAG. In this case, the ASEAN Football Federation will decide in its meeting on July 17 if it will hold football competitions as a separate event. Peter Atencio

Davao girls to play in Vietnam

FIVE more young booters from Davao City -- this time some of the top girl booter themselves -- have been named to the Philippine national team that is set to showcase their skills in an international competition this month.

Nina Alexi B. Arrieta, Janna Raizel Barcemo, Louise Gabrielle del Fierro and Joana Marie Adao of the Ateneo de Davao University and Nina Ricci Yanto of Emar were named to the PH squad, which will compete in the AFC U14 Girls Festival of Football in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam from June 8 to 15.

Aside from Davao booters, the national team is also composed of players from the Rizal Football Association, San Carlos City and Negros First. The girls went on a rigid training in Bacolod City before they were called upon to represent the country in Vietnam.

The PH booters, mentored by Robert Manlubo and Melissa Kris Marquez, will go up against teams from Korea, China, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Laos, Myanmar and host Vietnam in the week-long competition.

The team is currently training at the Ateneo de Manila field where it will also play in some tune-up matches against AdMU and University of the Philippines varsity teams.

After their tune-up matches, the team will pay a courtesy call to Philippine Football Federation (PFF) officials on June 7 and will leave for Vietnam on June 8.

Earlier, two young boy footballers from Davao were also selected to play for the national squad in the AFC U13 Festival of Football in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia from June 1 to 7.

Picked were Darius Joseph Ramos Diamante and Javier Romero-Salas, both of the Ateneo de Davao University.

Azkals to launch We Believe campaign

MUCH of the success that the Philippine National Football team is enjoying right now can be credited to the untiring efforts of the fans who have been constantly following the games and activities of the team.

To return the favor, the Azkals will launch a campaign on June 10. Dubbed “We Believe,” the campaign aims to bring the team closer to the fans and to make the public aware that the team’s victory is also the nation’s triumph.

“We promote unity. We want the fans to be united in celebrating the victory,” said Palami.

The idea will start with the Azkals but eventually Palami wants to include other Pinoy achievers—athletes, artists and even scientists—who triumphed in the country or internationally.

Its vision is to uplift the pride of the Filipinos and to inspire them to believe in what they can do for the country.

On June 10, in partnership with ABS-CBN, the team will join a fund-raising activity in the morning before holding a motorcade to Trinoma in the afternoon where the team will meet their avid supporters.

Concerts, football clinics and other programs will be part of the post- launching activities, which will be graced by members of the team.

As the goal is to unite Filipinos for the same cause, any support to the team will be acknowledged as well as any move aimed to generate support for the team.

“We wanted everyone to be part of the team in their own little way,” said team manager Palami.

Palami said the We Believe movement was inspired by the travels of the team, as wherever they go, the fans would take time to watch their training or request to meet their idols.

The team recently held a one-week team-building camp in Cebu and is set to meet the UFL All-Stars on June 5. They will leave for another training camp in Germany on June 12.

Villaflor: Azkals fans get the ‘ruff’ treatment

IT’S not easy being an Azkal. To acknowledge the fans, he has to mingle with hundreds of strangers, pose for photographs, and sign autographs over and over again. It can get taxing, but such is the price of fame.

But sometimes it’s not easy being a fan either. Just ask those who joined a meet-and-greet activity at a mall last Sunday, when an overzealous security detail allegedly treated them--I don’t know how else to put it--like stray dogs.

That Sunday afternoon I didn’t notice anything unusual as I scanned the long queue of giddy, screaming fans across The Terraces at the Ayala Center Cebu. It was what one might expect when more than a dozen celebrities come face-to-face with a throng of adolescent devotees on the edge of hysteria.

On the other hand, I didn’t expect to see such a huge crowd of fawning Cebuano fans, who, legend has it, are generally hard-to-please. And based on what I saw, I had the impression that the meet-and-greet activity was a complete success.

I had no clue, however, of what discontent was raging among young fans who felt they were mistreated that afternoon. The following day, they poured their sentiments on Facebook.

I only learned about the ugly side of the event when an FB contact, Doreen Galindo McHold, commented last Monday on a photo I had just uploaded: “The whole experience would have been fun if only that one lady (part of the event staff) was not rude. Wala pa gani mi ka pwesto para mag pa picture, she said, ‘Over ra kay ka day, hawa na,’ and she grabbed my arm and led me to the exit.”

Doreen said many other girls “had the same complaint as well” and directed me to a link showing a steady deluge of complaints. The fans posted elsewhere because their comments were being deleted and blocked from the mall’s official FB page.

“I was really shocked when I got blocked. I mean, I was just saying what really happened,” said Chrislyn Marwin Fernández on her post. “If they don’t want negative impressions from the people, they should’ve been nicer to us. They have no respect at all.”

This post from Destiny Nicole Ann Salas sums it all up: “I’m not from Cebu. My friend and I travelled six hours just to see them and actually have a real picture with them, (not) get pushed away by the female security guard. We didn’t even have a picture!”

“You guys didn’t have to push us away! We would’ve left if you guys treated us right… Neil and Simon were still signing my keychain when the guard pulled me away. I had to tell her that they were still signing my stuff. Respect the fans, just like we
respected the management,” Destiny said.
