UFL - Nomads seeks top spot , Global , Pasargad collide

Nomads Auction Manila seeks to move top of the table Saturday when it battles Navy Red Juice in the United Football League at the University of Makati field.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m. with Nomads, hoping to build on their 3-2 victory over Pasargad, against a Navy side that finished last in the first division last season.

Global and Pasargad collide at 4 p.m. in a battle of teams that dropped their first games of the tournament.

Both games will be aired live over AKTV on IBC13.

Other opening-day winners Loyola Meralco and Kaya will be in action on Sunday, while Stallion faces defending champion Air Force on Tuesday.

Nomads vs Navy. Nomads will lean on its attacking duo of Steve Borril and Phil Connoly, who scored the game winning goal against Pasargad.

Steve Blake, the former best goalkeeper awardee in the second division, will also play a key role along with defender Randy Musters, who scored Nomads’ first goal of the season – a curling left-footed goal from 20 yards.

Navy, once considered a traditional powerhouse, has failed to keep up with the buildup of the big teams in the league. They will be hoping to bounce back from a heavy 6-0 loss to Stallion.

Loreto Kalalang, the veteran right fullback, will be back in the lineup, after sitting out the Stallion game due to suspension. But the Sailors will be without defender Gerard Orcullo, who was sent off in the game against Stallion.

Veterans of many international matches, Marlon Pinero and Reydric Viliran are expected to pair up front for Navy, which is looking for its first win in the first division in the last two seasons.

Aside from adding Orcullo to the lineup, Coach Marlon Maro’s side also beefed up its midfield by acquiring former national team player Jeff Liman from Kaya.

Global vs Pasargad. Despite infusing new talent to its squad, Global absorbed a stunning 1-2 loss to Army Fritz and Macziol last Sunday.

The task of bouncing back looks to be tougher for coach Graeme MacKinnon’s side with some of his players expected to miss its second game,

“Our players need to step up. We must improve,” said MacKinnon. “We can’t afford to play the way we played against Army.”

Sudanese striker Izo Elhabbib will lead Global’s attack line along with the fleet-footed William Guerridon.

Elhabbib was last year’s leading scorer with 10 goals in league play.

Pasargad, one of the three promoted teams from the second division, showed plenty of fight before fading in the second half in the 2-3 defeat to Nomads.

Charlie Sutcliffe and Jay Torres scored quick goals in the first half to give Pasargad a 2-1 lead after 16 minutes.

Serbian football coach Zoran Dordevic who found success coaching the national squads of Bangladesh, Sudan, and Yemen will now work his magic with the various Philippine National Teams. The 62-year old from Veliki Jovanovac, Serbia arrived last Tuesday, January 17, with Japanese sports journalist Takashi Morimoto who aside from running Deren Sumida, a football club in Mongolia, is a frequent Manila visitor who covers the Philippine Men’s National Team.

Dordevic met with Philippine Football Federation officials led by President Mariano Araneta, General Secretary Rolly Tulay, and National Team Manager Dan Palami on two separate occasions to present his plans on helping the national sides not coached by senior national squad boss Hans Michael Weiss.

Limpag: New-look Azkals to face Koreans

By Mike T. Limpag

Fair Play

Thursday, January 19, 2012

FOOTBALL fans who follow the Azkals but not the UFL will probably find it strange that in the Saturday friendly against Icheon of South Korea, Phil and James Younghusband, among other players, won’t be seeing action.

And I hope these fans would get the right explanaition—that the players have club duties in the United Football League—lest they begin to think that they’re just busy with, I don’t know, showbiz commitments?

The friendly is part of a busy Saturday that will see two UFL matches in Rizal, which will be aired live on Akstyon TV, before the Azkal friendly, which will also be in Rizal.

The friendly will also be aired live, on ABS, and the station that signed a four-year contract worth P300M (of airtime, not cash. Sigh) has treated the UFL, sadly, as it would the rival shows in GMA.

It pretends it doesn’t exist and commentators have to deal with a practice that bars them from mentioning other stations. That may be okey when it comes to showbiz updates, but not when it comes to sports.

And for a station that got the contract because, according to the PFF president, “it raised the profile of football in the country by airing the games,” it’s a counterproductive move that insults the more knowledgeable fans.

And of course, to the UFL clubs and owners who pay P195,000 a month to some of the marquee players.

Still, I’m hoping this Saturday’s match will change all that. I hope that in this Saturday’s game, casual fans of the team will learn a thing or two about the football landscape in the country.

So, who’s missing the game this Saturday? Global FC has a game against Pasargad and I think the Azkals players in the Dan Palami-owned team have their priorities straightened out.

On Sunday, the Philippine Air Force will meet the Stallions, Loyola will take on the Philippine Army and Kaya FC will face the Green Archers. PAF, Loyola, Army and Kaya have 10 guys (at least) who played for the Azskals in the CF Madrid friendly.

So how will this new-look Azkals fare?

I don’t know. I guess, we will all find out this Saturday.

I just hope that whether it’s the new look team, or one that features regular guys, we will finally win a friendly on home soil.

It’s been a while and, three straight home losses, even if friendlies, doesn’t look good.

Azkals brace for tough Icheon Citizen match

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines – Icheon Citizen may be playing in the third tier of Korean football, but it doesn’t mean that they would be easy picking for the Philippine Azkals.
The Azkals are bracing for a tough test against the Koreans at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Kia Rio Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
And while the Citizen squad is a relatively unknown entity in the football world, the Azkals are welcoming the challenge of facing a club from an elite footballing country like Korea.
“It’s imperative that we continue playing against clubs from abroad to keep the team competitive,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami.
Palami said the game against the Koreans, which will also benefit
the victims of Tropical Storm “Sendong,” is an integral part of the preparation for the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal in March.
Coach Michael Weiss has stressed the need to bolster the squad in case some Europe-based players won’t be available in important tournaments.
A brand new 2012 Kia Rio will be raffled off after the game.

Mama Sita's reigns in national beach football

Reigning Luzon regional champion Mama Sita’s extended its reign in beach football as it edged recent United Football League (UFL) and NCR champion Philippine Air Force, 3-2, in the national finals at Casa Pilar in Boracay last weekend.

Air Force opened the scoring in the fourth minute courtesy of Winnie Subere but Mama Sita’s Harold Lorenzo quickly retaliated to tie the count.

A penalty kick by Mama Sita’s Vicente Rosell early in the third period made it 2-1 for Mama Sita’s then he followed it up with another goal to give Mama Sita’s a 3-1 lead.

Subere scored another goal to push Air Force within at 2-3 but both teams failed to score in the remaining minutes, enabling Mama Sita’s to take the crown.

“We are happy that beach football is gaining a lot of popularity now and the Philippine Sports Commission will continue to support this sport in whatever way we can,” said PSC commissioner Chito Loyzaga.

The PSC presented the event together with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and the BFAP which has recently announced that Lt. Gen Oscar Rabeno (ret.) of the Philippine Air Force is now the honorary chairman of BFAP.

Meanwhile Mayor John Yap, owner of event venue Casa Pilar has offered the resort as a permanent home for beach football in Boracay both for the Visayas regional tournament and the 2012 national championship later this year.
