Confidence boosted

HOPES of the three Cebuanas who are trying to join the main roster of the Girls National Under-14 team got a major boost after they impressed their coach over the weekend in the 2nd Bro Nationals Football Festival.
Arantxa Mari Trebol and Itsuko Maree Bacatan of San Roque Football Club (SRFC) and Alexa Ceniza of Saint Theresa’s College are hoping to land a spot in the national team. They left for Manila last Monday to attend in a series of training sessions and tournaments at Ultra, Pasig City.
Their San Roque Football Club coach Tony Trebol said the three were fit and were in good shape and looked like they could withstand the intense drills waiting for them in the training camp, after seeing them take part in tune-up matches during the 2nd Bro Nationals Football Festival last weekend.
Trebol said he believes that the girls stand a good chance of making it to the final pool of players.
If shortlisted, it will be her daughter, Arantxa’s, second time to make an appearance in an international tournament.
Arantxa played the left wing in last year’s AFC 13-Under Football Festival and was the lone Cebuana in the list.
“With her experience last time, she is excited and more confident now,” said Tony.
Her teammate Bacatan is also working hard for the midfield position while Ceniza is being eyed as the girl to guard the post with her tall physique.
The girls will be in Manila for almost six weeks and will join 32 other elite female players from different parts of the country.
They are the only three female players from Cebu in the Central Visayas team after the Regional Football Festival in San Carlos City.
Some of the players are from Bacolod, San Carlos and Dumaguete.
They have scheduled training camps and practice matches and perhaps some tournaments for the entire month of May and the first two weeks of June.
The first cut of eliminations will be on May 11. After that another set of selection will be made, where only 18 players will be left.
The team will be competing in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) 14-Under Festival of Football on the third week of June in Vietnam.
