Philippines looking to leave a mark on SEA Games football

By Paolo Del Rosario

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The Philippines is aiming to go against their own lackluster history in football during the South East Asian (SEA) Games and leave their mark on the region.
Despite the senior men's team being one of the better sides from the region on the international stage, the U-23 team has floundered in all the editions of the SEA Games.
Filipinos have yet to cop even a bronze medal in the biennial meet since the country started participating in the games in 1977.
In the latest edition of the SEA Games the Philippines was a step behind their opponents again, conceding 11 goals in just four games and losing all of their matches.
For the 2017 edition of the games the Philippines is fielding a more battle-hardened side, after subjecting their players through tough preparations.
The young Filipinos participated in the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship qualifiers in Cambodia, where they went toe-to-toe against Asian powerhouses Japan and China.
The Philippines didn't get a win from the tournament, but it was the experience playing at such a high level of competition that could prove valuable in the SEA Games.
"I believe that this experience has given us a lot to learn from," Philippine striker Jarvey Gayoso told CNN Philippines. "The lessons from these games have improved our mentality and our relationships on the field."
The players themselves know that they have a lot to prove in a tough group in Malaysia, but they are eager to face the challenge head on.
"I think it is always better to have the underdog story," Gayoso admitted. "I like the challenge of destroying that expectation that people have of us."
The Philippines opens its campaign against Cambodia on August 15.

Women striving for the podium

Philippine chef de mission Cynthia Carrion-Norton provided CNN Philippines with a list of promised gold medals from the various National Sporting Associations (NSA) ahead of the games.
Scanning through the various sports, football has committed to provide at least one gold medal to the Philippine cause.
When asked to confirm which team committed the gold medal, Carrion-Norton said it was the women's team.
The Philippine women's team has played and won together at the various youth levels and in the senior level.
The most recent success for the women's side is securing their qualification for the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup last April.
The women's team strung together a run of impressive results at the qualification tournament, humbling the United Arab Emirates 4-0, Iraq 4-0, and hosts Tajikistan 8-0.
The Filipinas also spent time in Japan to further sharpen themselves for the SEA Games.
"Our Japan camp gives us good experience, especially on the high pace and level of game against strong first division women's teams in Japan," Women's team head coach Let Dimzon told CNN Philippines.
But despite the promise of a gold from their NSA, Dimzon gave a more conservative outlook.
"It will be very ambitious to say na makakakuha natin ang gold," Dimzon said. "We will try to get into a place."
The Philippine women's football team begin their medal hunt against Malaysia on August 15.

Manila plays spoiler anew, ends Laguna's unbeaten streak

By Ivan Saldajeno

BIÑAN--For the second straight match, Meralco Manila played streak-buster again.

Manila ended Laguna's five-game unbeaten run with a 3-2 victory at the Biñan Football Stadium on Saturday night.

Connor Tacagni led the visiting side's attack in the first half with a brace that set up the pace of the match.

Tacagni put Manila on the board with a 29th minute that went past Bitoy Rosalia before adding another in the 33th minute with a shot that bounced inside the goal line.

Tyler Matas added another goal in the 55th minute, scoring from the left side of the goal box.

Laguna, however, got bright moments late, starting in the 76th minute as Ko Kyung-Joon introduced himself to the league with a rocket goal and capping with a huge strike from Fitch Arboleda with one minute left in the match.

Manila strengthened its hold of first place as its lead over Cebu is now extended to five points.

Despite the loss, Laguna stays in sixth place with 14 points.

Kaya Makati Eager to Play ASEAN Champions

A week after suffering a difficult defeat, Kaya Makati have the opportunity to bounce back in style on Saturday, when they take on the recent winners of the AFC Cup ASEAN Zonal Finals, Ceres Negros. With their victory in midweek over Singaporean side, Home United, Ceres made clear that they’re among the finest clubs in the region. Understandably, their return to Philippines Football League action is highly anticipated. The match will kickoff at 4pm at the University of Makati Stadium.
“We’re excited to play against the ASEAN Zonal Champions. We’re really looking forward to that,” said Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida.
“We have a healthy rivalry with Ceres. So for us, we’re always looking forward to playing against them, whether at home, or away. But after their last victory [in the AFC Cup], it gives us even more motivation to show what we can do,” added Makati midfielder Miguel Tanton.
Saturday’s encounter will be the third between Makati and Negros, with Ceres ahead in the series. The first meeting, the first ever PFL match, ended in a 1-1 draw at UMak. Negros then triumphed 3-1 on their home turf back in June, in what was a breathtaking display of exciting football.
“I think its going to be a tough game. Kaya has always proven to be a tough opponent,” said Negros captain Martin Steuble. “They are very organized. For me, they’re one of the toughest opponents in the league. We’ve had big games against them in the past. And I don’t think it will be any different this time around.”
The timing of the match, however, is certainly a challenge for the Bacolod side.
“It’s not easy to prepare a team, especially in the short time we have. The team is still celebrating the big win over Home United,” admitted Ceres head coach Risto Vidakovic.
Makati enter the contest fresh from having a seven-game unbeaten streak snapped by arch rivals Meralco Manila. But they’ll be buoyed by the fact that they return to the comforts of the University of Makati Stadium, where they’ve won five, drawn two, and lost only once.
“After the game against Meralco, we were a bit disappointed with the result. We think, on our end, we didn’t deserve that loss. But we have to move on and think positive,” said Marcaida. “It’s always been our mindset that when we play at home we have to protect our home turf. For tomorrow’s game, we make sure that we give a quality game to Ultras Kaya, and to all the Kaya fans that come to watch.”
“We always rise to the occassion when we go up against the tougher opponents. The fact that it’s at home, it’s just more incentive for us to show up big tomorrow,” added Tanton. “Showing up like we normally do against them — quick and tuned in — it’s the most important thing. I think last game, outside of the penalty, three of the four goals came in open play. So while I think set pieces are important, endurance and not switching off during the match is going to be key for us.”
Anyone who purchases a Grandstand ticket (P350) tomorrow will be given free access to Wednesday’s home match against JPV Marikina (4pm, Aug 16).
