Azkals yield bloody opener to Thailand in Suzuki Cup

By Alder Almo
A bloodied Philippine Azkals side yielded a close 2-1 loss to host Thailand in the opening of the Group A matches in the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup at the cavernous Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Physically battered at the start, the Azkals battled the War Elephants toe to toe in the first 37 minutes only to surrender a goal in the next minute that started their fall.
Showing precision in their short passing game, a three-touch combination by the Thais led to a beautiful goal by Jakkapan Pornsai right at the goal’s mouth as Phl keeper Ed Sacapano was caught by surprise.
Stunned by the goal, the Azkals let up again on defense as the War Elephants doubled their lead in the span of only two minutes.
Anucha Kitpongsri outraced the Azkals’ back four in a counter-attack and baited Sacapano to move out then calmly went to his left to avoid the Phl keeper before slotting in the goal that put more pressure on the visitors.
With so much talk on the Azkals’ rise since gate-crashing the Suzuki Cup semis two years ago, the Thais showed the visitors that they are in for a dogfight this time around.
Phl’s star striker Phil Younghusband got a nasty cut above his left eye inside the first 10 minutes of the match before midfielder Jerry Lucena got hurt at the back of his head in a mid-air collision.  The physicality of the match left the Azkals in total disarray in the first half.
The momentum, however, shifted to the never-say-die Azkals in the second half as they pulled one back despite Phil and James Younghusband taken out.
Singapore match hero Marwin Angeles came in for Phil at the start while Patrick Reichelt substituted James in the 60th minute that proved to be a stroke of genius.
Five minutes later, Thailand's star Teerasil Dangda left defender Juani Guirado with a bloodied mouth with his wayward elbow that, curiously, only drew a yellow card from the Japanese referee. That incident only fed the Azkals' desire to get back at them with a morale-boosting goal.
Reichelt made his presence felt. Fresh off the bench, substitute's pace posed problems for the Thais and his swift cross found an unmarked Paul Mulders, who scored his first international goal in the 76th minute.
Suddenly, the Azkals were energized and became the aggressor constantly attacking and challenging the War Elephants’ defense.
But just as Phl is making progress in the match, the unthinkable happened. The Azkals’ German coach Hans Michael Weiss was sent off for tossing the ball to a fallen Thai player on the ground.
Phl booters tried to rally behind their coach but failed to capitalize on one chance after another as the War Elephants parked the bus.  Thailand continued its mastery of the Philippines on the pitch extending their head-to-head record to 16-1, their lone loss to the Filipino booters coming in more than four decades ago – a 3-1 defeat in the 1971 Merdeka Games.
Despite the loss, Weiss took it as a good result for the Azkals, whose last goal against the War Elephants prior to this match was way back in 2004 Tiger Cup.
“Our couple of changes in the second half paid off,” said Weiss during the post-match interview.
Facing a possible suspension with his ejection, Weiss remained upbeat on the Azkals’ chances against Vietnam, whom they defeated 2-0 two years ago that paved the way for "Azkal-mania".
“It’s not the best situation. We’ll try to make the best out of it,” Weiss added.
The Azkals are now facing a must-win situation in their next two matches starting off against Vietnam on Tuesday before wrapping up the group stages on Friday versus Myanmar to repeat their semifinals appearance in 2010.
Thailand took the provisional lead in the group with three points while Vietnam and Myanmar are tied with one point each after their 1-1 draw in the curtain-raiser.  The top two teams in the group will advance to the crossover, home-and-away semifinals.

Aff Suzuki Cup: PH Azkals fall 1-2 to Thais

By

MANILA, Philippines—Philippines couldn’t get out of the first half hole and fell to Thailand, 1-2, Saturday night in its opening assignment in the AFF Suzuki Cup group stages in Bangkok.
Paul Mulders pulled one back for the struggling Azkals in the 76th minute—but the goal to at least forge a stalemate was just elusive.
Thailand moved to the lead in group A with three points, while Vietnam and Myanmar—which settled for a 1-1 draw earlier—have a point apiece.
The Thais, with their waves of relentless attacks, scored two goals in just a span of two minutes in the first half—and still remained sharp and dominated the pace in the second.
Jakkraphan Pornsai slotted one home in the 39th minute just infront of the box, then Anuch Kitpongsri managed to elude his defender then get around ‘keep Ed Sacapaño for the goal just two minutes after.
Sacapaño, though, still had a solid showing for the Philippines—thwarting the bulk of Thailand’s countless attempts.
The Philippine side did not have the luxury Thailand had when it came to shot on goals as it could not get the momentum with the Thais hounding their every step.
Subsitute Patrick Reichelt, replacing James Younghusband who, like his brother Phil, had a tough time Saturday night, made things happen, for a moment.
A wide-open Mulders connected on a fine cross from Reichelt, giving the Azkals live with just a few minutes left in the match.
But Philippines suffered a huge blow when its head coach Hans Michael Weiss was sent off in the 81st minute.
Weiss was caught by the referees intentionally throwing the ball at Thailand’s Anucha Kitpongsri, who was lying down in the pitch.
It was rugged from the beginning as 20 minutes into the match, Phil Younghusband already suffered a cut to his left eyebrow while Jerry Lucena took a knee to the head.
The Azkals, with zero points after the first day of group A action, face a familiar foe in Vietnam on Tuesday as the group stages continue.

Azkals kick off Suzuki Cup campaign against hosts War Elephants

Karl Decena, InterAKTV

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Philippine national men’s football team kicks off its campaign in the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup when it battles host Thailand Saturday night at the Rajamangala Stadium here.
The Azkals, whose fame surged after their Cinderella run to the semifinals of the tournament two years ago, look to end their losing tradition to the Thais, to whom they suffered large beatdowns in their last 12 encounters. Thailand’s 9-0 demolition of the Philippines in 1999 remains the most lopsided result of the matchup.
But this year is a different story for the Azkals, who have been beefed up by ample international experience and more talented players based in the Philippines and abroad. Leading the charge for the Azkals are veteran skipper Chieffy Caligdong, as well as brothers Phil and James Younghusband, Jerry Lucena, Rob Gier and Eduard Sacapaño, among others.
“We’ll be very competitive,” Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss said. “We look to exploit all our talent in the squad and we’re excited to play the match.”
However, the squad will miss striker Denis Wolf, who suffered an ankle injury before the match.
Thailand, meanwhile, doesn’t want to look at their past results against the Philippines and considers the Azkals as a tough challenge.
“That is the past. That was before,” Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer said.
The Thailand football team, nicknamed the War Elephants, will rely on forward Pipob On-Mo, who Schaefer regarded as the squad’s best striker, as well as Teerasil Dangda, another striker, and midfielder Datsakorn Thonglao.
The Azkals will play Thailand in the nightcap, while Vietnam and Myanmar clash in the tournament opener at 5:30 p.m Bangkok time.
AKTV will start the coverage of the Azkals-Thailand match on Saturday at 9.p.m. Manila time.

Undaunted Azkals open campaign vs proud Thais

By

BANGKOK—Throughout its rise over the past two years, the Philippines has played almost every team in Southeast Asia except for Thailand, a team whose footballing pedigree is almost unrivalled in the region.
The Azkals finally get a crack at the formidable Thais Saturday, undaunted by the prospect of playing a team with plenty of quality and a winning tradition at the start of the AFF Suzuki Cup at the 80,000-seater Rajamangala Stadium here.
It will be the first meeting between the two sides since 2007, when the Thais routed the Filipinos, 4-0, in an AFF Championship group match.
But a lot has changed since then particularly for the Azkals, who pulled off one stirring result after another in the 2010 tournament in Vietnam and showed steady improvement with the influx of talented overseas-based players.
“You cannot be overwhelmed by the strength of another team,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss. “Thailand has good quality but it’s not a team to fear.”
Central defender Rob Gier and striker Phil Younghusband believe getting a result would be “massive” for the Azkals.
“Getting a win or a draw would go a long way for us and for our confidence,” said Younghusband, the country’s leading international scorer with 27 goals.
Thailand also has a German coach in the well-traveled Winfried Schaefer, who won the Africa Nations Cup with Cameroon in 2002, the same year the Thais lifted the regional crown.
“The Philippines is a very strong team,” said Schaefer, who watched the Azkals’ 1-0 win over Singapore in a friendly last week. “They have good fitness, good discipline and it’s not going to be easy.”
Weiss revealed his 22-man lineup for the tournament yesterday, leaving out Neil Etheridge and Stephan Schrock.
But the German included goalkeeper Roland Muller, whom he could tap if the Azkals go further in the tournament.

Queen City routs Leyte, 7-1, in Smart qualifiers

Saturday, November 24, 2012
CEBU Queen City United started out strong in the Philippine
Football Federation Smart Club Regional Qualifiers in San Carlos City yesterday,
 routing Baybay Leyte FC, 7-1,
to take the lead in the three-team event.
An aggressive CQCU began the scoring rampage with Cebu-based
Nigerian Samson Olaniyi banking a goal in the sixth, while
Jojo Rodriguez made it 2-0 in the eighth.

Dan Villarico scored in the 14th and Olaniyi redirected Bryan Eborde’s
cross in the 41st for a 4-0 lead at the half.
Rodriguez got his second goal in the 69th minute and Jade Paghubasan
added another in the 89th.
Baybay Leyte FC got its lone goal on the 89th minute but Villarico
quickly responded in the 91st minute.
Head coach Mario Ceniza said conceding the late goal bodes badly for the team.
“It’s something to ponder upon. Why were they able to score in the
dying minutes?”said Ceniza.
“That would only mean they relaxed their game and we can’t do that.”
Ceniza also pointed out the things they have to improve for this
Sunday’s match against powerhouse Ceres-FC, which has six Korean
players and two former national players in the lineup.
“We have to work on our passing kay simple pass, masipyat pa gyud,”
said Ceniza.
He emphasized that they should be consistent with their play
for good results in this year’s competition, which will take the top two
teams to the round-of-16.
They will have their recovery training this morning and they will watch the
game between Baybay Leyte FC and Ceres-FC this afternoon.
