CHICAGO—The Philippine football team wrapped up its 14-day training camp here on Saturday with Azkals coach Michael Weiss declaring that his wards are right on track in their buildup for the AFF Suzuki Cup.
The Azkals yielded to Premier Development League side Chicago Inferno, 1-3, last weekend, but their international friendly against the US Virgin Island in Indianapolis was cancelled by the United States Soccer Federation.
With the Azkals thriving in the intense scrimmages during the past two days, the German mentor is leaving the Windy City with a measure of satisfaction.
“We could already see how the hard training pays off in such a short period of time,” said Weiss, who put the Azkals in gruelling sessions that focused on enhancing fitness and improving cohesion.
The Azkals missed Phil and James Younghusband for the camp, as well as several Europe-based aces, but Weiss pointed to the emergence of Demitrius Omphroy and Matthew Uy as among the positives that came out of the camp.
Jason de Jong also impressed Weiss in the scrimmages as the Fil-Dutch standout deputized well at centerback, while Jeff Christiaens, the Fil-Belgian winger, was also making a strong case to challenging Chieffy Caligdong for the left winger starting spot in the team.
“There will be a lot of sacrifices to be made in the next three months,” said Weiss.
The Azkals fly home Sunday, before resuming training just a few days before they leave for Cambodia for their Sept. 5 friendly. The Azkals will also face Singapore on Sept. 7 and Laos on Sept. 10.

Yanson to manage Azkals U23 squad
By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.
The board of directors of the Philippine Football Federation had decided to give the management of the U23 national football team, which will see action in the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar next year, to transport magnate Leo Rey Yanson.
This was revealed Sunday by Ceres-La Salle Assistant Coach Ramon Janeo, as he claimed that the PFF Competition Chairman Cyril Dofitas arrived in Bacolod City last week to meet with Yanson for the initial talk on the issue.
Janeo added that PFF President Mariano “Nonong” Araneta and PFF Secretary-General, Lawyer Rolando Tulay, will be arriving in Bacolod at the end of the month to meet with Yanson and finalize the terms and conditions of the deal.
Among the justifications of the capability of Yanson to manage the team is the recent victories of Ceres-La Salle varsity team and Ceres-La Salle U19 over the Teen Azkals U19 squad.
During the varsity squad’s win last August 8 at the home pitch of the University of St. La Salle, Joshua Beloya led the team with 2 consecutive goals in the first half alongside Aldrin Dolino’s share of goal for a 3-nil advantage.
Prince Hanessen Anthony and Joel Bedia nailed a goal each to seal the match at 5-nil. On the other hand, Paolo Sanchez scored Ceres-La Salle U19 lone goal during the squads’ triumph last August 10 at the Ayala North Point ground.
Aside from these successful match-ups, the PFF officials also noticed the remarkable performance of the Ceres Team in this year’s PFF-Suzuki Cup Visayas Regional qualifying.
The team, likewise, became the tournament’s defending champion after it demolished Iloilo in the home-and-away finals. That was 3-1 in an away game played at the Central Philippine University in Iloilo and 9-nil in its home game at Panaad Park and Stadium. /WDJ

Skipper Borromeo eyes Azkals return

CHICAGO—Sidelined from international football for the past 10 months, national team co-skipper Aly Borromeo is hoping for a comeback next month when the country holds the four-nation Paulino Alcantara Cup at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
The central defender who has been a key figure for the national side the past eight years is working doubly hard here in the Azkals’ two-week training camp to hasten his recovery from a strained knee which he sustained at the tail end of the United Football League season.
“It’s devastating to be out and to be watching the game from the sidelines,” said Borromeo, whose last game for the Azkals was last Oct. 7 when they beat Nepal, 4-0, at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The injury sidelined Borromeo from the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal in March. He was also rested during the series of friendly matches against Indonesia and Malaysia last June.
Borromeo, who underwent surgery after tearing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament in October last year, actually returned to action in May and June for his United Football League club Kaya, helping them salvage second place.
“I kind of got too overeager to play right away towards the end of the UFL season so I got this minor setback,” said Borromeo. “I just have to be sure on my recovery and looking towards longevity in my career.”
Team manager Dan Palami said Borromeo’s return will be a boost to the squad which is looking for options on defense. In fact, the Azkals had to convert defensive midfielder Jason de Jong to centerback in the 1-3 loss to the Chicago Inferno last Saturday in a test match.
Azkals coach Michael Weiss said he won’t be forcing Borromeo to return prematurely, but said the 29-year-old is still part of his plans particularly for the Suzuki Cup.

Stallions sign new players
United Football League squad Penson Stallion Giligan’s added key players to bolster its campaign for the upcoming season.
The team signed Azkals member Jason de Jong and took in defender Carlos Canas Joaquin Garcia and forward Rufino Sanchez on loan from Spanish third division side CF Internacional de Madrid.
“The two CF Madrid players are important (for us) to finish higher (in the standings),” Stallion managing coach Ernie Nierras told InterAKTV. “For De Jong, I will use his natural position as a holding midfielder.”
De Jong was initially offered a slot by Stallion before trying out for Ayr United FC, a second division club in Scotland. However, his stint with the Scottish side didn’t push through.
Meanwhile, Garcia and Sanchez were part of the CF Madrid squad which defeated a selection of players from the Philippine team and the UFL in a charity match last January.
Led by former national team striker Reuben Doctora Jr., Stallion finished fourth out of the ten teams in Lesgue play last season.
