THE CEBU Elite Boys Under-14 squad bagged the crown in the Regional Festival of Football after escaping Dumaguete, 1-0, in the championship match yesterday at San Carlos City.
That win avenged Cebu’s earlier 2-1 loss to Dumaguete in the opening match.
Yves Caballero of Don Bosco College scored from long range in the 53rd minute to hand Dumaguete its only loss of the tournament.
“I’m very happy with this win. Like what I said, if we stick to the plan then we could win this tournament,” Oliver Colina, the head coach of the Cebu Elite Boys Under-14 team told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday.
After Cebu City’s defeat in the first game of the competition, the Elite squad bounced back with a 4-2 victory over San Carlos City and Iloilo 2-1. Cebu City earned a trip to the finals after a decisive 3-0 win over San Carlos City in the semifinals the other day.
“Their communication was vital. They always listened to my instructions and they didn’t have any complaints. They deserved this win because they worked very hard,” said Colina. “I would like to thank the parents for their continual support in the tournament.”
The Cebu Elite Boys Under-14 squad is managed by Titong Rafols and is also coached by Martin Ferrer and Almie Colina.
The Regional Festival of Football is the basis of the selection of the RP National team training pool.
Colina, who also the RP Under-14 coach, will pick the 30 players for the training pool. He said he has eyed five players from Cebu to join the national squad.
Colina will be flying to Manila to scout players from Luzon. He will also look for possible prospects in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa in Tarlac.
