UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) avoided an upset from University of the East (UE) after scoring a close 3-2 victory on Thursday to remain on top in the 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s football tournament at the Erenchun Field in the Ateneo campus.
UE responded with two straight goals courtesy of Gringo Bravo at 27th minute and Reginald Gomez at 43rd minute to seize the edge at halftime, 2-1, after UST’s Mario Clarino’s goal at the 19th minute mark.
But mid-fielder Mandie Lunag rescued the University of Santo Tomas Golden Booters from first loss by firing two successive goals in the 51st minute and 63rd minute mark to regain the lead and the Red Booters did not recover.
With the win, UST improved its log to 5-0-2 win-loss-draw for a league-leading 17 points, while UE ended its finals bid after dropping to 1-6-0 card for three points at the bottom of team standings.
De La Salle University, under mentor Hans Smit, kept its flickering finals bid alive by outlasting host Ateneo De Manila University, 2-0, to improve to 2-4-1 win-loss-draw card for 7 points in the event supported by Mizuno and Ateneo.
