BAGUIO’S high school soccer football squad stunned defending champion Benguet with a lone match goal late in the second half to barge into the final.
Also its elementary counterpart scored a similar 1-0 victory against host Ifugao to also stay on track on Day 3 of the Cordillera regional games here.
Striker Domingo Sayan exploited Benguet’s weakening defense with a blast to the left side of the goal with two minutes to go to keep intact Baguio’s 2-0, win-loss streak in the double elimination format among five teams.
The city opened up Monday with a 4-0 trouncing of Mt. Province while Benguet downed Ifugao, 2-1, to forge their match for the first championship berth at the Lagawe Central School.
Benguet will face the winner of this morning’s game between Ifugao and Abra to determine Baguio’s challenger from the losers’ bracket in the final game Thursday morning.
That team must beat the city twice.
The city’s elementary boys edged Abra, 2-1 on Monday but found the defense of the host division harder to puncture up to the middle of the second half. That was when mid-fielder Jerome Amendy scored with a looping goal, a few seconds after teammate Jacob Shawn Gomez’s attempt was deflected by Ifugao goalkeeper Lance Maddul.
