UAAP football Final Four up

Games today
(Rizal Memorial Football Stadium)
2 p.m. – DLSU vs ADMU (men semis)
4 p.m. – FEU vs UP (men semis)
Defending champion Far Eastern University clashes with last season’s runner-up University of the Philippines, even as rivals La Salle and Ateneo collide in a pair of no-tomorrow semifinals matches in the UAAP men’s football tournament today at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Unlike in the recent years where the top-ranked squads have twice-to-beat privileges, all teams are in equal footing, as the semifinals is a one-match affair, where the winners will play in the one-game finals on March 8 also at the Rizal pitch.
With reigning MVP Paolo Bugas back in harness, the second-ranked Tamaraws are slightly favored in their 4 p.m. duel with the No. 3 Maroons.
In a rematch of Season 75 semis, the top seeded Green Booters hope to sustain their unbeaten run in the tournament against the Blue Eagles, who are back in the post-season after a one-year absence, in the first match at 2 p.m. Both matches will be aired live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action.
The FEU-UP match will feature the league’s top two scorers in the Tamaraws’ Eric Giganto and the Maroons’ Jinggoy Valmayor.
Valmayor, playing his final year for UP, is on a personal mission as he missed the championship duel against FEU last year as the national under-23 standout was then serving a two-game suspension.
La Salle will miss defender Timothy Brago, who was suspended due to cumulative yellow cards, but coach Hans Smit need not to worry on his side’s offense with Nate Alquiros, Sabin Bustamante and Chuck Uy leading the attack.
The Green Booters last won the championship in 1998.
Ateneo, the Season 75 champions, suffered a major blow on its bid to make a return stint to the Finals, as midfield general Mikko Mabanag is suspended also due to cumulative yellow cards.

FEU battles UP, Ateneo takes on La Salle in UAAP football knockout semifinals

DEFENDING champion Far Eastern University clashes with last season's runner up University of the Philippines, while rivals De La Salle and Ateneo collide on Sunday in the semifinals of the UAAP Season 77 men's football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. Unlike in the recent years where the top-ranked squads have twice-to-beat privileges, all teams are in equal footing as the semifinals is a one-match affair with the winners play in the one-game Finals on March 8 also at the Rizal pitch. With reigning MVP Paolo Bugas back in harness, the second-ranked Tamaraws are slightly favored in their 4 p.m. duel with the No. 3 Fighting Maroons. In a rematch of Season 75 semis, the top seeded Green Booters hope to sustain their unbeaten run in the tournament against the Blue Eagles, who are back in the postseason after a one-year absence, in the first match at 2 p.m. Both matches will be aired live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action. The FEU-UP match will feature the league's top two goalscorers in the Tamaraws' Eric Giganto and the Maroons' Jinggoy Valmayor. Valmayor, who is playing his final year for UP, is on a personal mission as he missed the championship match against FEU last year as the national under-23 standout was serving a two-game suspension. But the Tamaraws have a deep lineup featuring Jess Melliza, Nicolas Ferrer and Arnel Amita and Joshua Mulero. La Salle will miss defender Timothy Brago, who was suspended due to cumulative yellow cards, but coach Hans Smit still has Nate Alquiros, Sabin Bustamante and Chuck Uy leading the attack. The Green Booters last won the championship in 1998. Ateneo, the Season 75 champion, suffered a major blow in its bid to make a return stint to the Finals, as midfield general Mikko Mabanag is suspended also due to cumulative yellow cards.

U-23 Azkals get SEAG nod

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has approved the inclusion of the under-23 men’s football team for the Singapore Southeast Asian Games, an official from the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) said yesterday.
PFF General Secretary Ed Gastanes said the team received confirmation from the POC last Thursday, marking the country’s return to the biennial sportfest following its absence two years ago in Myanmar.
“We’re happy with the sudden turn of events,” said Gastanes. “We’ve been in close coordination with the POC just to make sure that we will be able to send a team to the SEA Games.”
The PFF was supposed to field a team for the Myanmar conclave but its request was denied by the POC for failing to meet its criteria.
So frustrated with the decision then that PFF President Nonong Araneta threatened not to send a team in future meets.
But the PFF sang a different tune this time, hoping that their participation in Singapore will pay dividends.

Global FC to field fresh, foreign-flavored lineup as it seeks to atone for AFC Cup drubbing

From: Karlo Sacamos

EXPECT Global FC to field a fresh, foreigner-powered squad when it takes on Philippine Army on Saturday in the United Football League at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. After turning to a squad made up mostly of Filipinos in their Asian Football Confederation Cup loss to South China last Wednesday, Global coach Leigh Manson is counting on a side composed of imports led by Yu Hoshide, Sam Bonney, and Izo El-Habib, as well as Pinoy standouts who seldom see action. “With our schedule the last six weeks and the upcoming one, we need to rotate more and use the whole squad,” the Scottish mentor told Spin.ph on Friday, ahead of the 5:15 p.m. matchup. All but three of the 19-man AFC Cup squad were Filipinos, with Renato Gonzalez and Raul Martinez of Mexico and Japanese stalwart Masaki Yanagawa the only foreigners, owing to an AFC rule that puts a cap on the number of foreigners seeing action for a team. With a fresh side, the defending league champions, toting 10 points in four matches, seek to sustain their three-match winning streak and their hold of the top spot in the 10-team Division 1 standings. The powerhouse squad faces an Army side that has yet to register in the win column after two outings. Loyola Meralco, running third with nine points in three matches to show, tries to keep its unbeaten run as it battles fourth-running Stallion FC, while Green Archers United and Manila Jeepney face off in the opener at 2:15 p.m.

Palami puzzled by AFC refusal to allow Global new-boy Matt Hartmann to play against South China

From: Karlo Sacamos

GLOBAL FC was already down two men even before kickoff and owner Dan Palami believes that prevented the team from putting up a good fight against South China on Wednesday night in the Asian Football Confederation Cup. Palami said they learned just an hour before the kickoff that only 19 men from the 21-man lineup would be allowed by the AFC and Global have yet to confirm why. That kept newly-acquired kept winger Matt Hartmann and a foreign player out of the match and apparently disrupted the club’s game plan. "We're really at a disadvantage," Palami said after Global FC suffered a 6-1 beating.  "We just couldn't think of a reason why the lineup was disallowed," he added, stressing that they passed their 21-man roster ahead of the deadline a week prior to the match. "The lineup was submitted before the deadline... unless we are interpreting it differently," the concurrent Azkals manager said. "We have to check." Global FC still has five games left, and the club hopes to resolve the issue before the next match against Pahang FA on March 11 in Malaysia. "Matt should've been there plus one foreign player," Palami said. But the Global boss says he doesn’t want to take anything away from South China, which came up with a fine game. "A loss is always tough and even tougher when you lose by that scoreline, Palami said. "But we have to learn from this. "The good thing was we could find our way in their box to go for a score. If we cover ourselves better in counters, we'll stand a better chance against the other teams."

Fil-British striker wants to try luck with Azkals

MANILA, Philippines – For the past few weeks, an unfamiliar name surfaced throughout social media about a certain foreign born player who was interested to play for the Azkals.
Levi Gilmar Fernandez, a Filipino-British striker who is currently on trial with Scottish Championship club Alloa Athletic FC, said on Twitter that he's interested in playing for the national team of his mother’s home country.
Born to a Filipina mother and a former Crystal Palace FC booter, Fernandez have high hopes that he will be in an Azkals’ kit before the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers
Well, my friend actually first told me that the Philippines had a national team when I was at Dagenham and after that I was interested,” said the aspiring Azkal in an interview with Rappler.
He added that the friend he was referring to, whom he did not name, had been a former teammate of Neil Etheridge at Fulham FC.
The 21-year old footballer has been with different clubs including Malta-based division one team Balzan Youth FC and English fourth tier club Dagenham & Redbridge FC.
Fernandez, who has been referred to as the next Neymar due to their similar looks and style of play, asserted that his management is now in contact with the people behind the national team in hopes of acquiring a slot to play for the Philippines.
“My agency is in contact with Mr. Dan Palami who first gave me the look in but I've just been called up for the U22's but my main focus is for the Azkals’ and getting that call up for the World Cup Qualifiers.”
“I've seen a few highlights and one game and I can see the team is more attacking, I think I could 100% fit into Coach Dooley's system if given the chance as my main attribute is attacking.”
England-based agent Steve Mac claimed that the young player is set to be loaned to UFL-side Stallion FC during the next transfer window in April as they are currently in contact with the local club’s management.
“He will go on loan in April to Philippinesclub Stallion FC from Alloa Athletic. Head coach Ernie Nierras will help him off the pitch with getting the right documents to the Azkals first team squad.”
Meanwhile, when reached for a comment, coach Nierras declined to issue a statement regarding the matter and stressed that he will make the announcement once the deal is official.

11 teams for AFF Futsal 2015

KUALA LUMPUR (25 Feb 2015) – After a hiatus of 13 years, Singapore will make a return to the AFF Futsal Championship this year which will be held in Indonesia on 8-18 October.
The last time Singapore took part in the AFF Futsal Championship was way back in the inaugural year of the championship on 2001 that was held in Kuala Lumpur with just five teams taking part.
The five teams were hosts Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Brunei.
Incidentally, Singapore made the final of the meet that year before losing to Thailand.
The AFF Futsal Championship 2015 gained further importance considering that it will also be used as the qualifying venue for the AFC Futsal Championship in 2016.
Only the top three teams will make the cut for the AFC event to be held in China.
With the inclusion of Singapore, this year’s meet will see the most number of teams taking part in the championship with 11. Only Cambodia have abstained from taking part.

Rude awakening as Global FC dealt a hammering by six-goal South China in horror AFC Cup debut

GLOBAL FC got a rude awakening in its Asian Football Confederation Cup debut as it succumbed to a strong South China side, 6-1, on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The defending United Football League champions fell in a huge hole early and never recovered as they opened their maiden campaign in second-tier club competition in the continent on the wrong foot.
Global still has five games left in the four-team Group G, facing Pahang FA of Malaysia next on March 11 in the opponent’s turf.
Daniel McBreen and Mahama Awal proved thorns in the side of the lone Philippine representative to the AFC Cup by scoring a brace apiece, while skipper Chan Wai Ho and Lo Kong Wai were also on target for South China.
Michael Jonsson provided a consolation for Global with a late goal.
“We need to develop more of our planning and strategy,” said Global coach Dan Padernal, who stood in for Leigh Manson owing to coaching license restrictions.
The rout, though, was not surprising considering Global faced the best club team in Hong Kong, having won 41 Division 1 championships in its premier league.
“But we didn’t expect the score to be what it was,” South China coach Mario Gomez said through an interpreter.
South China caught the Global defense napping just two minutes into the match when the Hong Kong side found the back of the net with a looping goal by McBreen in an ominous sign that left the partisan crowd stunned.
McBreen, 37-year-old Australian striker, doubled the lead in the 27th minute, before Lo added to the cushion with a goal off the rebound 10 minutes later.
South China kept the pedal to the metal and punished Global in counterattacks in the second half as Chan joined the scoring fray just five minutes after intermission with an impressive free-kick conversion.
After being a facilitator in the first few goals, Awal, 23-year-old Cameroonian winger, emerged on the scoring end by scoring twice in a span of just 10 minutes, starting in the 65th.
The Filipino-Icelandic Jonsson, brother of former Azkals defedner Ray, avoided the shutout with a close-range goal off Mark Hartmann four minutes before stoppage time.

AFC Cup : Global Fc vs South China

Meanwhile, South China will aim to turn around a mediocre season when they kick off their AFC Cup campaign against Philippine side Global in Manila on Wednesday night.

The opening group G match at Rizal Memorial Stadium is important for the former Hong Kong champions as they need a successful regional cup campaign to satisfy demanding boss Wallace Cheung Kwong-yung, who took over the team from Steven Lo Kit-sing last summer.

The Caroliners lie third in the domestic table and although they are only two points behind leaders Eastern, they have played two more games.

Unlikely to challenge for the title and coupled with defeat in the Senior Shield last four, South China are struggling to live up to expectations.

"South China are always under pressure to achieve results but we are confident of overcoming the difficulties," said captain Chan Wai-ho. "We have a good record in the AFC Cup and it will help us if we start the tournament in a convincing way.

"The team is in good form and the players are expecting a good game in the Philippines. The only worry is the floodlights are very dim and we will be playing on artificial turf."

Global FC starts AFC Cup campaign against formidable South China of Hong Kong

From: Karlo Sacamos

GLOBAL FC opens its Asian Football Confederation Cup campaign against South China of Hong Kong on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. After participating in the AFC President’s Cup and Singapore Cup the last couple of years, the defending United Football League champions take part in their toughest tournament yet — the second-tier club competition in the continent. “We’re excited to be a part of history, help raise the standard of football here,” Global coach Leigh Manson said in the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. The Philippines was given slots in the tournament ranked just behind the AFC Champions League after Asia’s football governing body last year made changes to the format of its club competitions. The lone representative in the country after Ceres-La Salle fell short in the playoff round, Global starts its stint against no less than the veteran squad regarded as the best in Hong Kong, having won a record 41 Division 1 titles in its premier league. “We have a lot of respect for our opponent,” Manson said, but the Scottish mentor expressed confidence in his side’s capabilities of pulling off an upset in the Group G match that kicks off at 8 p.m. “It’s a great unknown,” he said. “I don’t think anybody can tell us where we’re going to finish because no one’s ever done it before.” “We could find out that South China are well advanced over us,” he added. “We could find that we are at par with them or even stronger that they are.” South China coach Mario Gomez promised a victory for his squad on the opponent’s turf. “We expect to win and we’ll give our hundred percent,” the Mexican mentor said through an interpreter. Manson just expects his wards to play near-perfect football and avoid silly mistakes against a formidable foe. “We have to make sure there’s few unforced errors to give ourselves a great chance to start our campaign with a win,” said the Scottish coach, who is fielding an Azkals-loaded squad led by fit-again skipper Misagh Bahadoran and bolstered by three foreign standouts.

Neil Etheridge returns to Manila...for a different reason

MANILA, Philippines - Former national football team first-choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge will be holding a goalkeeping camp here in Manila from May 18 to 30.
Etheridge announced on Thursday evening through his Twitter account that he will be coming back to Manila, but this time for a different reason.
“I feel that it's something that the country could benefit from because at the moment as much as football is progressing, goalkeeping is a very specific area of the field that hasn't been touched,” the Fil-English goalie told Rappler in an interview.
“It is of course also something very close to my heart and I want to give back to those that have followed me and wants to join local clubs and the Azkals in the future.”
He stressed that although he want to do more events like that here in the Philippines, his arduous schedule with his career in the England will only allow him to do such during the off-season.
“As people know my schedule, playing in England is very busy and my time off is very limited. Even though I am doing this in my off-season, I feel passionate about so I hope I can make this a more regular occurrence.”
Etheridge, on the other hand, revealed that his goalkeeping school will not just be open for kids, but to all age groups as well.
“It is open to everyone at all ages that want to learn and benefit from my experience being a goalkeeper at one of the highest levels in the world and of course, my international experience. I have planned it out that I can spend as much time with the people involved as I can.”
The 25-year old shot stopper, who recently signed with Charlton Athletic FC until the end of the football season, has been away from the country since the outbreak of the issue that involved the departure of Azkals teammate Stephan Schrock.
“I have spoken to coach and it's all water under the bridge.” Etheridge admitted.
“I have moved forward in my career playing in the Championship which the coach wanted me to do and I still believe I have a lot to give to the national team when selected.”
The former U16 English International also confessed that he is still open to play for the Azkals, should he be selected again to the team.
“Whenever I am selected for the national team as you can see I wear my heart on my sleeve and I give everything I have. With big games coming up in the summer I will be keeping myself fit and waiting for a call up. I still have a lot to give for the team and the country and I know that Coach recognizes that.” -

UFL: Kaya, Stallion seek third straight victories

KAYA and Stallion try to keep their perfect records as they tangle with separate foes at the resumption of the United Football League today at Rizal Memorial Football Field.
Running second with six points, Kaya faces Manila Jeepney at 5:15 p.m. before Stallion battles defending champion Global in the first marquee matchup of the season.
Like Kaya, Stallion is seeking a third straight win, and with Ruben Doctora in fine form, the Iloilo-based side likes its chances.
Doctora netted a hat-trick in the 4-1 demolition of Team Socceroo last Saturday.
Global is on top with seven points although it has played more games than the rest of the field owing to its adjusted schedule because of the coming AFC Cup.
But coach Leigh Manson’s side is going into the game high on confidence after whipping Team Socceroo, 8-0, last Tuesday where Hikaru Minegishi, Izzo El Habbib and Mark Hartmann scored two goals each.
The match is Global’s third in a draining week and as if it’s not enough, Manson is also looking ahead to the AFC Cup on Wednesday when the UFL side plays South China.
Kaya is off to a strong start with wins over Army and Green Archers last week.

Matthew Hartmann Speaks on His Transfer to Global

Matthew Hartmann has been the subject of a transfer to Global FC, ending a spell of four years with the Loyola Meralco Sparks. Part of the squad even before the club was renamed to its current form, the midfielder played a key role in winning the UFL Cup and the PFF National Club Championship. His move to Global
“Not for one second was it an easy decision to make. It was very hard. It was a very emotional decision because the club has looked after me so well. For four years they’ve stood by me, they’ve looked after me on and off the field, especially Randy [Roxas] (club’s Vice Chairman) – he’s really looked after me. He’s the one who’s been at the club the whole time. We’ve had managers in and out. We’ve had coaches in and out, but Randy’s been there since the start. I owe a lot to him,” said Matt Hartmann
Although his decision to leave the club was a difficult one to make, the midfielder is relishing the opportunity to once again be playing alongside his brother and former Spark, Mark Hartmann.
“The next step is finally getting to play alongside my brother again. I hated playing against him. I didn’t like winning against him, I hated losing against him. So now we’re on the same team, it’s brilliant. And also it’s a massive chance for me to play in the AFC Cup (where Global is in the group stages).”
Having been at the club even before it officially became the Loyola Meralco Sparks, Matt Hartmann has developed close friendships with more than a few of his teammates, especially with long serving Sparks Roxy Dorlas, Simon Greatwich, and Phil and James Younghusband.
“It’s very sad leaving them, but they understand that it’s a good move for me, and that it’s a good time for me to go. I’m obviously still going to be friends with them. Just because I’m at a different club doesn’t mean I’m not friends with them.”
As he bids farewell to the Loyola Meralco Sparks, Matt Hartmann does so content with his achievements with the club, and confident with the level of quality the current squad possesses
“Winning the UFL Cup in 2013, and of course the Smart Nationals,” said Hartmann of his fondest times with the club. “In four years we’ve got two trophies and we’ve finished second in the League, so it’s been very very good,” he said. “Now we’ve got all the new players in. It is actually the strongest squad we’ve had. As time goes on, we’re bonding more and more, and it will be a very strong team.”

McMenemy: Attacking Referees is Unacceptable

After achieving a dramatic comeback from two goals down, the Loyola Meralco Sparks were understandably jubilant after the final whistle. But the celebrations were cut short after members of Manila Jeepney, including head coach Kim Chul-Su, were involved in a fracas as they expressed their annoyance at the result, and their disappointment at the referee. The incident saw both benches cleared, but mostly with the intention of restraining certain individuals from violent actions.
“From their bench, to be winning 2-nil against one of the top teams in the League, to then go down 3-2, there was always going to be frustration coming for their bench. And James’ (Younghusband) request was simply to shake hands. There had been a lot of back and forth during the game. For one reason or another, players decided not to shake hands and walked straight off the field after a really tough game,” said McMenemy when asked about the incident.
“I have no idea what their coach was going on about. He looked like he was after the referee. I think that’s something that needs to be looked at because, I may talk, but I don’t touch referees – that’s not on. So maybe the UFL will have a little look at what happened there.”
An incident report has since been filed by the match officials regarding the events that transpired after the final whistle, and the United Football League’s disciplinary committee will release their decision in the coming days before the weekend.

OFFICIAL: Loyola and Global agree on Matt Hartmann-Curt Dizon Transfer

After lengthy negotiations, the Loyola Meralco Sparks and Global have come to an agreement over the transfer of Matthew Hartmann. The midfielder, recently crowned MVP and Best Midfielder in the Sparks’ title-winning campaign in the PFF Smart National Club Championship, leaves after being a fixture at the club since its inception four years ago. During his time with Loyola he won a UFL Cup title, a PFF National Club Championship title, and a runners-up finish in the League.
“First of all, he’s the longest standing player at the club. And it’s always hard to lose a player that’s been there since the beginning,” said Team Manager Armand Del Rosario, who also revealed the club was close to extending Hartmann’s contract, which was set to expire in June. “We were on the verge of signing him to a longer term contract, but the pull to play with his brother and to play in the AFC Cup decided it. Although we didn’t want to lose him, with Global’s interest, it was a decision that was a win for both clubs. We wish him the best of luck. I feel he’s one of the best players in the League and I really want him to be the best he can be out there.”

Hartmann’s departure ushers in the arrival of Philippine National Team player Curt Dizon from Global.
“Curt is an exciting young player,” said Del Rosario. “At 21 years old he’s got a bright future ahead of him for the Azkals, and for Meralco.”
While the deal has been agreed, Hartmann will not be able to play for Global in the United Football League until the next transfer window opens in April, but he will be eligible to suit up for his new team for the upcoming AFC Cup matches.
Having been a crucial figure in the clubs’ successful first four years, Matthew Hartmann’s time at the club will be remembered fondly by all involved with the Loyola Meralco Sparks.
