Football games in Bocaue

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is exploring the possibility of holding football matches in the immediate future at the Philippine Sports Stadium, an outdoor facility located beside the gigantic Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
PFF secretary general Ed Gastanes said yesterday they plan to talk with Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) officials in hopes of staging games at the 20,000-seat stadium which is part of Ciudad de Victoria.
Gastanes, however, ruled out the possibility of having the Philippine Azkals play a home match in Bocaue should they make the home-and-away semifinals of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup later this year.
The PFF, however, is eyeing the stadium as one of the sites for the group stage of the 2016 Suzuki Cup which the Philippines and Myanmar are slated to co-host.
The Philippine Sports Stadium was part of the Ciudad de Victoria project that included the indoor Philippine Arena, a 55,000-seat venue that was launched during the INC’s Centennial celebration.
However, the Philippine Arena can’t host football matches as the space only permits to hosting indoor events like INC gatherings, concerts and basketball, among others.
For now, the PFF is focused on staging matches at the Rizal Memorial Stadium which recently launched an artificial turf that replaced natural grass.
The Azkals are scheduled to hold a series of training camps at the Rizal pitch next month, and is expected to host the Philippine Football Peace Cup in September.

Fil-Am Burkey inks with Ceres FC

s1

Ceres-La Salle FC is continuously building a powerhouse squad ahead of its debut in the First Division of the United Football League (UFL) when the season kicks off late this year.

After signing Fil-German midfielder Manny Ott, another national team standout inked a deal with the newly-promoted UFL team Ceres FC.

Fil-Am striker Nate Burkey reportedly has officially signed up with the Bacolod-based club Ceres FC.

Burkey started his professional career in 2011-2012 UFL seasons where he suited up for the Kaya FC and with Pachanga Diliman FC as his last team before he transferred to Ceres.

The 29-year-old Washington DC-born veteran forward last wore the national colors in summer during the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in Maldives.

With Burkey’s entry with the multi-titled Ceres-La Salle FC, it’s expected that the provincial club will be one of the toughest clubs in the league’s premier division.

Just in the off-season, the reigning UFL Division 2 champion and back-to-back PFF-Smart Club Men’s Championship titlist has already signed up five players into its roster.

Over the weekend, Ceres inked former Azkals’ Fil-German midfielder Manuel Gelito “Manny” Ott, while signed Fil-Belgian left back Jeffrey Christiaens, Fil-Spanish central defender Juani Guirado and Spanish striker Adriano Gallardo late June and early this month.

Ceres FC is expected to formally present the newly acquired players as well as the entire roster for the upcoming UFL tournament anytime soon./WDJ

Ceres signs Fil-German Ott

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

Bacolod-based and multi-titled Ceres-La Salle FC is expected to be one of the star-studded and toughest clubs in the First Division when the United Football League’s (UFL) season kicks off later this year.
This, after the UFL Division 2 champion and back-to-back PFF-Smart Club Men’s Championship titlist has reportedly signed up another great player to its roster.
Over the weekend, reports stated that Ceres signed up former Azkals’ midfielder Manuel Gelito “Manny” Ott.
The Fil-German Ott is the fourth signee of the club during the off-season following Fil-Belgian left back Jeffrey Christiaens, Fil-Spanish central defender Juani Guirado, and Spanish Adriano Gallardo.
While the 22-year old Ott started his career in Germany with SV Ilmmünster, FSV Pfaffenhofen, and TSV 1860 München before suited up for the FC Ingolstadt II in 2009, however, it was in 2010 when the Fil-German began his international exposure when he was called up to play for the Philippines against Chinese Taipei.
In 2011, he again suited up for the Azkals U23 during the Southeast Asian Games held in Indonesia wherein he was able to play with other Ceres mainstays Joshua Beloya and Christiaens.
With the addition of Ott in the team, Ceres becomes more of an attacking squad with both its first and second teams capable of performing at the same level.
Earlier, Ceres signed up Fil-Spanish defender Guirado.
Guirado first played for the Ceres during the AFC President’s Cup in Bacolod last summer.
The 34-year old Fil-Spanish central defender, who was on-loan at Ceres, displayed great performance – scoring a pair of goals against Rimyongsu SC of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Chinese Taipei’s Tatung FC – most likely to have convinced the club owner to sign him for a 2-year deal starting this season.
Meanwhile, Christiaens and Spanish striker Gallardo were likewise signed up with Ceres side late last month.
On the other hand, late reports also hint of Azkals’ Nate Burkey as another prospect to sign up with Ceres FC.
For head coach Ali Go, the club’s build-up is part of the team’s rigid preparation for a tough competition ahead in this UFL season.
With the recent fast paced changes in the Ceres roster, it also raised many eyebrows from league followers.
But Go reiterated that Ceres has its system and acquiring players is based on the team’s requirement – right player at the right position.
Ceres FC is yet to formally present the newly acquired players as well as the entire roster seeing action in the upcoming UFL tournament./

Global FC downs Kaya to win UFL FA Charity Cup title

Jaelle Nevin Reyes

MANILA, Philippines - Ending their season with another dominating performance, Global FC defeated Kaya FC 3-1 to capture their second straight United Football League title on Saturday, July 26 at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Despite the downpour of heavy rain at the newly refurbished Rizal Stadium, fans from both sides came to watch the squads battle it out for their chosen charity.
In a striking turn of events, however, the two teams in the finals agreed to split the P100,000 bounty for the inaugural Football Alliance Charity Cup between the two chosen charities, namely the FairPlay for All Foundation and the Homeless World Cup Team Philippines.
As the game started, a hasty attack from the Kaya side marred the defense of Global in hopes of striking gold in the early part of the first half.
Kaya’s Jovin Bedic opened the blitz for his club by striking the ball from long distance but was easily denied by keeper of Global FC.
On the other side, Izo Elhabib capitalized on a defensive miscue by Kaya, taking a shot on goal that was denied by Kaya’s Nick O’Donnel.
Several attacks on both sides of the pitch were laid down by the opposing squads, each eager to score and take the edge over the other for the remaining minutes of the first half.
Mark Hartmann scored off an assist by John Kanayama from the left wing to break the silence of the first half in the 44th minute.
Not long after the opening goal, another one sank for Global, this time by Elhabib who curled the ball to the far side of the post to beat the goalie.
As rain poured on the second half of action for the final, a tough tackle by Kaya FC’s Thomas Taylor prompted the referee to pull out a yellow card from his pocket.
The game continued to be physical as a hard challenge by Emmanuel Mbata from inside the penalty area garnered him a caution while a penalty kick was awarded to the Global side.
The commotion from inside the box rumbled into a scuffle resulting to a yellow card to Global’s Amani Aguinaldo and another to Mbata who was then sent off the field due to a red card.
As the opposing sides settled, Hartmann fired the penalty to the O’Donnel-manned goal to extend the lead of his team to 3-0.
Making matters worse for the yellow shirts, a second yellow card was presented to Taylor after a stiff tackle on Global’s Marco Casambre.
With just 9 men on their side, Kaya’s playing coach Chris Greatwich was sent in as a substitute in hopes of salvaging their conquest to take the FA Cup.
The substitution proved to be a great choice for Kaya FC as Greatwich sank the last goal in the contest on the 81st minute from just inside the box.
Four minutes of stoppage time was added to regulation but no goals from either side were sank, with Global prevailing 3-1.
Amani Aguinaldo from the winning club was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the Football Alliance Charity cup.
Stallion takes third place
Former UFL Cup champs Stallion FC sneaked past the formidable Loyola Meralco Sparks FC to earn third place in the FA Cup, 5-3.
Stallion conquered the first few minutes of the first half as Christian Thomert converted a goal in the 22nd minute to take the early lead for his crew.
The Loyola side did not back down from the early setback as Graham Caygill equalized the score of both squads two minutes after the opener.
Teams went head-to-head as the game progressed, both keen to break the 1-1 goal deadlock.
In the 76th minute, Stallion’s Nathanial Alquiros seized a goal that overthrew the tie between the two clubs.
A few minutes after, Loyola answered with a goal of their own, this time by Simon Greatwich, who headed a striking ball off a corner in the 86th minute.
Regulation ended in a 2-2 standstill which encouraged the match officials to extend the game into two additional 15-minute halves.
In an outstanding turn of events, no goals were converted in either of the two additional halves.
As the game went into penalty shootout, the booters of Stallion outnumbered the penalties sank by Loyola, 3-1. The game ended with Stallion taking 3rd place in the FA Cup after posting a 5-3 win against Loyola. -

UFL: Kaya, Global battle anew for FA Cup Final

MANILA, Philippines - Kaya FC and Global FC defeated their rivals to earn the coveted spots in the finals of the United Football League Football Alliance Charity Cup.
The two squads dominated their opponents in the second leg of the their semifinal matchup at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Tuesday, July 22.
Kaya stuns Loyola
Capitalizing on their one goal advantage, Kaya FC conquered the Loyola Meralco Sparks FC, 3-1, to secure a finals appearance for the FA Cup.
The kickers of Kaya were eager to seal the deal for their squad from the start of the game, sending early attacks on Loyola territory.
An opening attack from the left wing directed by Thomas Taylor signaled the start of the offensive front of the yellow shirts.
Meanwhile, Loyola’s frontline was also commencing an attack of their own as immediate shots on goal were taken by their strikers.
A controversial goal from Loyola was disallowed by the game officials following a sneaky header that was sent to the back of the net by Simon Greatwich, who was in an offside position.
As play continued, Kaya’s offensive bombarded the Sparks’ defense from the left wing with several attacks.
Showing off his football prowess, Loyola’s veteran forward Phil Younghusband took several shots on goal but Kaya’s defense proved to be too strong for his assaults.
The opposing teams fired numerous attacks from both sides of the turf but both came empty going into halftime.
A rejuvenated offense returned to the field from the halftime break as Taylor banked on an assist from Emmanuel Mbata to open the scoring for his squad.
Kaya exploited on the absence of Loyola’s dominant defenders Alexandro Elnar and PJ Fadrigalan in the early minutes of the second half.
More shots on goal were taken by the Kaya FC offense but the crippled defense of Loyola held their fort by continually denying their shots on goal.
A striking corner kick by Diego Barrera went deep into their opponents’ territory, finding the undefended Mbata for an easy tap in to the far side of the post to extend the lead of Kaya FC, 2-0.
The unrelenting offense of Kaya did not cease their attack as Mbata notched another goal in the 74th minute to put his team in a comfortable 3-0 lead.
With the clock winding down, a sense of urgency struck the Loyola offense sparking a blitz of attacks to the Kaya FC goal.
P. Younghusband hit a ricocheting ball towards the goal of his adversaries on the 83rd minute but Kaya FC’s goalie Nick O’ Donnell goalie punched the hasty ball away from his post.
Another veteran from the Sparks in the name of Freddy Gonzales tried his luck to break the defense of Kaya and struck gold as he scored the closing goal for this semifinal matchup. The aggregate score for the semifinal bout was 7-4 in favor of Kaya FC.
Global beats Stallion
Global FC, who was down by a goal on aggregate going into the game, staged a come-from-behind win by blanking Stallion FC 3-0 in their second meeting for the FA Cup semis.
The teams got physical early in the game as Stallion FC’s Landry Nguene was stretchered off the field following a series of attacks by his squad.
Global answered with outbreaks of their own courtesy of Mark Hartmann who was enthusiastic on scoring a goal for his home team.
Raul Martinez Rodriguez curled a remarkable ball to the Stallion goal on the 41st minute to equalize the score of both squads on aggregates, 2-2.
The Global offense went knocking once again on the door of Stallion at the start of the second half as a dangerous cross to the middle of the field was sent by Aaron Altiche but was swatted away by the goalkeeper.
On the 58th minute, a rebound goal was snatched by Izo Elhabib following a save that slipped the hands of Stallion GK Wilson Muñoz.
Play went on with both teams hoping to bag goals and take the win for their respective clubs but each of their attacks was defended well.
A sense of urgency struck the Stallion offense in the closing minutes of the game igniting an attack from their side.
Their attacks, however, proved to be too weak for the sturdy defense of Global FC.
A miscommunication on the side of Stallion resulted into a steal and a goal from Hartmann, sealing the deal for The People’s Club on aggregate, 4-2.
Consequently, semis victors Kaya FC and Global FC will battle it out for FA Cup title on Saturday, July 26 at 6:45 PM at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, while Loyola FC and Stallion FC will fight for third place earlier in the day at 3:15 PM. -

Coach Dooley hopes Azkals learn from champion Germany's attractive, efficient football

PHILIPPINE men’s football team coach Thomas Dooley hopes the Azkals will learn from Germany’s run to the title in the Fifa World Cup in Brazil. The Germans showed how the beautiful game should be played in the sport’s showpiece event, where they stamped their class by brandishing an attractive style of play without compromising efficiency in scoring. Germany capped the dominating run with a 1-0 nipping of Argentina in the final thanks to an extra time winner by super sub Mario Goetze to win a fourth World Cup crown. “That’s what Germany does over and over again — they play organized, disciplined. That’s what we need to do,” the German-American mentor, who played 15 years in the Bundesliga, said on Monday after the viewing party of the World Cup final at Discovery Suites. Germany’s domination was in full display in the clinical 7-1 dismantling of the host squad in the semifinal, one of the country’s six victories in seven games. Ghana, one of the lowest-ranked sides in the World Cup, was the only country to force Germany to drop points after both squads fought to a 2-2 draw in the group stage. Except for that small hiccup, the Germans’ World Cup campaign seemed flawless as they leaned on a relatively less heralded squad compared to their rivals. “They’re successful with not the best players,” Dooley said of the side led by Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Mulller, and Golden Glove winner Manuel Neuer. “You can have the best players, but can’t be successful.” And the 52-year-old Azkals mentor, who lived in Germany for more than three decades, hopes to take a leaf off Joachim Loew’s play book. “Obviously I would like to copy something that I (learned) that is successful and want to bring it in with my ideas, my style,” said the former US World Cup skipper, who steers the Azkals in the Philippine Peace Cup in September and the AFF Suzuki Cup in November. Ateneo, San Beda blank Ang Liga foes

MANILA, Philippines - The football teams of San Beda College and Ateneo De Manila University dominated their opponents on Saturday, July 12 to take wins in Week 4 of the Ang Liga pre-season tournament.
Ateneo, who were defeated by a Lyceum late game rally last week, came back with a vengeance by winning against the tough Rizal Technological University (RTU) booters, 3-0, at the Moro Lorenzo field.
At the start of the first half, the RTU booters swiftly launched their offensive to startle the Atenean defense, forcing the latter the commit mistakes.
Several shots on the goal of the Katipunan-based squad were made by RTU during the first 20 minutes of action but none of them found the back of the net.
On the other side, the ADMU offense jumpstarted their attack by relying mainly on through passes to launch their offensive barrage on the RTU goal.
Both teams went at it on the remaining part of the first half, exchanging strikes after strikes but both came home empty handed as the bland first half ended in a goalless tie.
Consequently, the tempo of the game instantly shifted on the start of the second half as Atenean high-scorer Emilio Acosta uncovered an opening in the RTU defense and punched one in on the 47th minute to open the scoring for his squad.
On the 78th minute, ADMU’s Julian Roxas capitalized on a through pass from their midfield to extend his squad’s lead to 2-0.
RTU tried to retaliate by launching an attack of their own but were denied by the Atenean back line.
Continuing the scoring frenzy of ADMU on the second half, Blue Booters’ captain Michael Mabanag showed off his agile footwork by leaving his defender and scoring the final goal for his squad.
San Beda scores back-to-back wins
NCAA football kings San Beda College Red Booters copped back-to-back wins by downing the University of the Philippines (UP) booters and National University’s team A (NU-A).
It proved to be a busy weekend for the Ang Liga defending champions as they were scheduled to play two consecutive games against two highly ranked football squads as a result of the cancelled July 6 games.
SBC’s mastery of the field was tested as they went against UAAP football powerhouse UP at the Moro Lorenzo field last July 12.
The game started slowly as both teams tried their luck by hurling attacks at each other to mark the opening half.
Senior striker Ashley Flores broke the scoring dry spell of the silent first half by flicking one into the UP goal to take the lead for San Beda on the 27th minute, 1-0.
The Fighting Maroons were quick to initiate a counter-attack on their antagonist's territory but San Beda’s defense rapidly denied their offensive blitz.
The veterans of the Mendiola-based kickers proved to be vital on their campaign as senior booter Dingdong Fornea managed to strike another goal for the red shirts on the 48th minute.
Two more goals were dropped in the final minutes of the last half as San Beda’s Connor and Torres managed to each tally goals on the 56th and 89th minute, respectively, to give their crew a dictating 4-nil win.
Meanwhile, the Red Booters also notched a 3-nil win against NU-A to complete their weekend Ang Liga football duty.

Green Archers and Pachanga Have Mountain to Climb in Football Alliance Quarterfinals

July 15 Matches at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium:
4:45pm – Stallion Giligan’s v Green Archers United Globe
8:15pm – Pachanga PLDT Home Fibr v Kaya FC
Both Green Archers United Globe and Pachanga PLDT Home Fibr need to hit the ground running on Tuesday, as they attempt to stage a comeback at the historic Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. The pair lost their first leg matches of the Football Alliance Cup quarterfinals, with Green Archers looking to overhaul Stallion Giligan’s two-goal advantage, while Pachanga strive to overcome Kaya’s three-goal buffer.
Having nearly scored on two occasions late in the first leg, the Archers will be quietly optimistic of their chances of a turnaround. Standing in their way, however, is a Stallion side that has proven a real force in the 1st Division, with their run of 11 games unbeaten in the latter stages of the League evidence of their solidity. But with Chieffy Caligdong, Robert Lopez Mendy, and Tating Pasilan, the Archers have the firepower to score plenty of goals.
Kaya utilized their Youth players to great effect against Pachanga in their first quarterfinal duel, and the same is expected to happen on Tuesday night once again. Inigo Herrera found the back of the net after coming on as a substitute, marking a massive day for the club’s academy products, with all six Youth players listed on the roster seeing action in the match. Paolo Salenga managed a goal before the final whistle to give Pachanga a glimmer of hope, but they’ll have to improve immensely in the second leg if they are to stand any chance of reversing the tie against a motivated Kaya side.
The winner of the Green Archers and Stallion quarterfinal will move on to face Global in the semi-finals, with the victor between Kaya and Pachanga taking on Loyola Meralco Sparks in the next round. The inaugural Football Alliance Cup, named after the UFL’s organizing body, represents the final competition in the 2013-14 UFL season, and features the top six 1st Division clubs in a fast-paced knockout tournament. Aside from the prestige of overcoming the very best in Philippine football, the winning club will be awarded P100,000, which will be donated to a charity of the team’s choice.

Guirado to join Ceres FC

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

Following his superb performance during the last AFC President’s Cup in Bacolod, the 34-year-old Spanish central defender Juan Luis Guirado is reported to join the Bacolod-based Ceres-La Salle FC in the upcoming season of the United Football League.
In a report from El Correo de Burgos, a Spanish newspaper, the Fil-Spanish defender who last suited for CD Burgos in 2013 season has signed up a 2-year deal with Ceres FC – which just got its promotion to the First Division.
While on loan with Ceres FC, which represented the Philippines during the AFC President’s Cup, Guirado scored 2 goals in 3 games against Rimyongsu SC of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Chinese Taipei’s Tatung FC, and Turkmenistan’s HTTU Asgabat.
In another Spain-based newspaper, Diario de Burgos, it described that Guirado’s outstanding performance during the last AFC tournament has led the club [Ceres-La Salle] to offer Guirado with a 2-year contract.
“My interest started almost as a joke and I finally made ??an offer for two seasons,” Guirado told El Correo de Burgos.
Guirado also told Diario de Burgos that football is now the third most popular sport in the Philippines next to boxing and basketball.
Meanwhile, late last month, Ceres FC signed up 23-year-old Fil-Belgian Jeffrey Christiaens and Spanish forward Adrián Gallardo.
While Christiaens’ transfer made him the fifth player from the league’s defending champion, Global FC, Gallardo is the first full-blooded Spaniard to suit up for the Bacolod-based club.
Christiaens was born in Brussels, Belgium and first saw action in Philippine soil in 2011 as part of the U23 squad during the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia before he suited up for the Azkals a year later.
Gallardo, on the other hand, has scored 6 goals in 19 games for the CD Fernando in the La Liga.
Aside from CD Fernando, Gallardo also played for Union Sporting, Chiclana CF, Oporto, Industrial Jerez, Cadiz B, Athletic Sanluqueño and Cádiz CF.
Although he hasn’t yet formally signed his contract with the Ceres-La Salle FC, Gallardo is already very excited and looking forward in joining the team./
