GLOBAL FC finally flashed its old, fiery form to waltz past Philippine Army, 9-1, on Saturday night in the most lopsided result so far in this United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.
Displaying the offensive prowess that had been missing in the first few games, the former UFL champions breezed past the Troopers to roll to their third straight victory that catapulted them from fifth to solo second spot, leapfrogging the Korean-powered Troopers.
Jeffrey Christiaens registered a hat-trick in the second half alone, while fellow Azkals Misagh Bahadoran and Mark Hartmann added a brace each for Global, which also drew a goal apiece from Iranian recruits Milad Behgandom and Moji Miromohammadi.
“I think we’re building up, we’re getting a head of steam of momentum,” Global coach Leigh Manson said. “It was a matter of time before we got sharp in front of goal.”
After establishing a 2-1 lead at the half, Global exploited a wanting Army defense in the second half to pull away with the biggest winning margin and goals scored so far this season.
Barely a minute after coming off the bench seven minutes after the restart, Hartmann scored from the middle off a Ben Starosta feed. Bahadoran then found the back of the net five minutes later, before Christiaens followed suit a minute later in a sequence that left Army goalkeeper Ed Sacapaño begging for more help from his back four.
Adding insult to injury, Global sustained its onslaught with Bahadoran scoring a header to an empty net off the rebound in the 68th, before Christiaens fired a close-range strike in the 70thoff a pass from Hartmann, who then scored two minutes later.
Christiaens completed his three-goal effort with a penalty conversion that found the bottom left corner.
“It’s an amazing feeling, but now I need to think about the next game,” the Filipino-Belgian left-back said. “It’s the same whether we score nine or one goal, it’s three points.”
