PH Malditas press bid to make SEA Games team

By Karlo Sacamos

THE national women’s football team feels it is very much qualified to participate in the Southeast Asian Games set in Myanmar this December.
Malditas skipper Mareille Benitez believes the team has a very strong chance of landing a podium finish considering its impressive performance last month in the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup qualifiers, where it barely missed a berth to the main tournament after finishing a strong second among four teams.
“With the team that we have now, there’s really a big chance that we can actually win a medal. Based on our last competition, kayang-kaya,” Benitez said.
Women’s football was not held in the 2011 SEA Games.
Thailand, losing finalist in the 2009 edition of the biennial meet, barely beat the Malditas, 1-0, in the Asian Cup qualifiers last month.
Based on the criteria made by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), only medal winners in the last SEA Games will be eligible for inclusion in the Philippine team.
The Filipina booters last competed in the SEA Games in 2007 when they missed a spot in the knockout stage after finishing last among three teams in Group A.
The women’s division in the meet has no age limit unlike in the men’s side, which allows only players who are 23-and-under.
Malditas coach Ernie Nierras stressed the importance of the women’s team inclusion while lamenting the old-fashioned criteria repeatedly being adopted for inclusion in the Philippine contingent.
“Wala kaming record sa SEA Games kasi hindi kami pinapadala eh. Pano kami magkaka-record? It’s a chicken-and-egg thing.”
“We cannot guarantee a medal eh. There’s no such thing. You have to play the games,” Nierras added.
In the event the women’s team is not considered for the SEA Games, Nierras said there is a contingency plan to host a tournament in the country late this year similar to the Peace Cup last season.
“Hopefully things will work out. We’re not losing hope. The PFF (Philippine Football Federation) is working really hard in making sure that PSC and POC are aware of what we’ve been able to do.”
The Malditas’ recent showing factored heavily in their rise in the Fifa (International Football Federation) rankings this month, which saw them jump seven places to 76th in the world.
The Filipina booters will next compete in the Asean Football Federation Women’s Championships in September when they face the likes of Indonesia, the Japanese U-23 team, host Myanmar, and Laos.
The Australian U-19 team and the Jordan national team are the other non-Asean guest teams seeing action in the tournament.
As part of their preparations, the Malditas are set to embark on a two-week US training camp late next month.
A friendly against their Haitian counterparts in August also in the States is likewise in the works.
“I’m very excited because we have all these preparations. We’re definitely a team to watch out for in the AFF,” Benitez said.

Football, futsal out of SEAG for good

The Philippine team to the Myanmar (Burma) Southeast Asian Games this December is down to 130 with the exclusion of football and futsal bets from  an initial list of 200 athletes.
Philippine chef de mission Jeff Tamayo yesterday said the latest figure was a result of a decision by  Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. and Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia to strictly follow the criteria that allows the inclusion of only the gold medalists in the previous SEA Games and potential gold performers in the national delegation to the Dec. 11-22 biennial meet.
“They’re gone,” said Tamayo, referring to futsal and football, which wanted to send its men’s and women’s team even if it means funding its own participation.
“Cong. Peping and chair Richie are really pushing for a small delegation. We’re now in the process of scrutinizing the list and include only those who are really worthy of going to Myanmar (Burma),” said the POC second vice president.
Aside from individual athletes, Tamayo said only men’s basketball and the 30-man dragon boat squad passed the standard.
Tamayo said Filipino athletes will now compete in 20 of the 33 sports (460 events) at the most with medal-rich events such as swimming and shooting failing to submit their candidate athletes.
“We’re carefully evaluating who should go and who should stay. There will more be changes in the lineup as the SEA Games draws near,” said Tamayo, the soft tennis chief who heads the Philippine SEAG task force.
Wushu and chess have earlier sent word that they’re skipping the games as a sign of protest against Burma organizers, who had blatantly removed several Olympic sports and put indigenous disciplines to beef up their chances of winning gold medals.
They also added several events that Filipino athletes hardly know—14 in chess and seven in dragon boat apart from over 40 gold medals at stake in ethnic disciplines.

AFC U14 Girls : Myanmar 1-1 Philippines

Ho Chi Minh: Myanmar and the Philippines maintained their fourth and third spots respectively in the AFC U-14 Girls Regional Championship for the ASEAN region as they drew 1-1 in their penultimate match at Thong Nhat Stadium on Saturday.
The first half went barren of goals in the 70-minute match that was played on a rainy and humid day but that was to change as Myanmar skipper Khine Thazin Phoo scored the match’s opening match on 55 minutes.

Filipina Itsuko Maree Cuizon Bacatan, who had scored four goals in two previous matches against Malaysia and Cambodia, came off the bench after 60 minutes and equalised seven minutes later.

Both nations still have a chance to finish top of the six-nation table and become ASEAN champions if they win their next games and table toppers Vietnam and second-spot Thailand lose theirs.

Marnelli Salvador Dimzon’s Filipinas will face Thailand while Myanmar led by head coach Zin Mar Wann take on Malaysia in the last round on Sunday.

Tactics key to Global FC U-15 win

Monday, June 24, 2013
WHILE the national Under-15 team were perhaps lucky to leave the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas with only a 3-0 loss to Philippines Global FC Under-15 on Saturday night, the visitor's win was certainly no fluke.

The Filipinos headed into the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM)-Frenz Under-15 ASEAN Champions Trophy Group B tie without a point in four games, but one wouldn't have guessed that judging from the way they played.

They wrecked havoc on the hosts' defence with dangerous runs down either flank and were up 2-0 after half an hour, with a 63rd minute strike firmly putting them in the driver's seat and relegating Brunei to the bottom of the six-team table.

"I'd have to say that our team shape, especially in attack, won us the game," noted Philippines Global FC Under-15 coach Andres Crisanto Gonzales.

"We played well, stuck to our game plan and took our chances when he had them in the first half.

"We could have played a bit better in the second half but it is hard to train the players since they come from different provinces in the Philippines," Gonzales added.

The result prolongs Brunei's hunt for their first win of the competition after notching one draw and two losses in their previous three games.

There were several positives for Brunei to take from the match though.

The team had a strong work ethic and never stopped running, with several players in particular shining for the hosts.

Goalkeeper Muhd Ishyra Asmin Mohd Jabidi was a stable presence inside his box while captain Abdul Matin Norazlan did well to deal with any threats heading his way in defence.

Naziruddin Hj Ismail's dribbles did cause some problems when he was shifted to a more advanced attacking role in the second half, and Muhamad Syahmi Rasyid proved to be a menace for Philippines Global FC Under-15 with some good runs into the box.

"Brunei have some flashy players and good dribblers who are confident on the ball," said Gonzales when asked what he thought of the hosts.

"I think of all the teams in our group, Brunei is the only one we can match up to in terms of speed and strength," he added.

Brunei's next game is against Lao Toyota FC tomorrow.

Philippines Global FC U-15 seek first win in Brunei

Saturday, June 22, 2013
PHILIPPINES Global FC Under-15 may have lost all their four games in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM)-Frenz Under-15 ASEAN Champions Trophy but they won't have much time to dwell on it as they are hoping to get their first three-points tonight.

The Philippines' side will face the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) Under-15 team at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas, and their head coach, Andres Gonzales, expects a tough game from the host tonight.

"We always try to get the best result in every game. Tomorrow's (tonight) game will be tough. But I hope that we can win," said the head coach during the match press conference at the NFABD House along Jalan Pusat Persidangan yesterday.

Philippines Global FC Under-15 have lost all of their games in group B and currently lie at the bottom of the six-team table.

"We have yet to record any points in the tournament. We lost 3-0 to Malaysia in the first game, and followed by 4-1 defeat to Myanmar. In the third game, we lost 2-1 to Laos and in our recent game, we lost to Indonesia 3-1," continued the head coach.

"We are based in Manila and the players are coming from few provinces in the Philippines. We still have two slots for players left for this tournament, and we are still in a process of scouting," he added.

NFABD Under-15 are not faring much better.

The national team have only one point to show after playing all three of their Group B matches.

They lost their first two games and drew the other, leaving them fifth in the six-team table.

Brunei lost their last game 3-1 to Frenz Malaysia B on Saturday, and their sole point came when they blew a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Myanmar Mandalay Academy two weeks ago.

They lost their opener with a 4-1 scoreline to Frenz Indonesia on June 1.

"We have added a number of players in the team and with that, there will be changes in the tactics and formation. We are aiming to get three points tomorrow," said NFABD Under-15 team manager Jamhari Hj Lani.

The tournament, which is the brainchild of FAM Deputy President Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and the Frenz United Football Academy of Pahang, Malaysia, offers a grand prize of US$50,000 for the champions and US$25,000 for the runners-up.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals.

AFC TILT:Phl U14 blanks Malaysia to stay in tournament

By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.

After a very disappointing 4-nil loss by the Filipinas last Wednesday against host Vietnam, the national team bounced back Thursday with an overwhelming win over Malaysia, 7-nil, to stay in contention in the ongoing Asian Football Confederation U-14 Girls Championship at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam.
The Filipinas sizzled few minutes after the kickoff with a 4th minute goal from striker Cecile Firmeza Deita, as midfielder Joannah Marie Embalsado Adao scored a quick double four minutes later.
With the momentum on the Filipinas, forward Itsuko Maree Bacatan scored double after finding the back of the net in the 19th and 36th minutes to give the Philippine squad a commanding 4-nil advantage.
In the second half, striker Mikhaela Jumawan came in for Dieta in the 44th minute and scored three more goals for the national team: 47th, 48th and 63rd minutes.
Also starting for the Philippine squad against Malaysia are Negrense keeper and team captain Natasha Katerina Lacson, defenders Angela Bea Dongon de Luna, Tenelyn Espana Otom, Icee Calimbo and Jennifer Baroin; midfielders Bianca Almeda, Joyce Omboy Semacio and Khryztel Anne Munich Muring.
On Wednesday, the national squad suffered a blowout from the host team Vietnam, 4-nil, on Nguyen Thi Quynh and Nguyen Thi Nu scoring a pair of goals apiece.
Completing the Philippine team line-up are Negrenses Riza Isabelle Rodriguez Carmona and Arantxa Mari Alvez Trebol; Patricia Erika Punongbayan Francisco, Kaitlyn Dabalos, Chloe Hails and Alexa Ceniza./

Football teams to bat for SEAG inclusion

By Olmin Leyba

MANILA, Philippines -  Amid sports officials’ inclination to prioritize individual bets over team sports in the coming Southeast Asian Games, the Philippine Football Federation will bat for the participation of its under-23, women’s and futsal teams in the Myanmar meet.
PFF general-secretary Ed Gastanes said the Azkals U-23, the Malditas and the futsal squads are all vigorously preparing for the tourney and insisted they deserve to compete in the SEAG.
“Our under-23 is fairly strong, it is stronger than the team two years ago. We have at least seven Azkals national team players and we have good additions. We even formed the nucleus of the team earlier than usual, six months before competition which gives them enough time to prepare,” Gastanes told The STAR.
Handled by a dedicated coaching staff led by coach Brian Reid, the U23 squad had played the Singapore U-23 in Singapore last week to jumpstart their SEAG buildup, dropping a  0-1 decision.
“They lost by the smallest of margin to a team whose core played for Suzuki Cup champion Singapore and the Lions XII club, the No. 1 team in the M-League (Malaysian League). And the Azkals players were not even there yet,” Gastanes stressed, adding that local and foreign camps are in the pipeline for the U-23, including a return match against Singapore U-23 at home.
The Malditas, for their part, have been making steady progress in women’s play. After a solid performance in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers in Bangladesh last month,  the Malditas accounted for the biggest move in rankings in the International Football Federation monthly rankings for June. The Filipinas have shot up to 76th.

“The women’s team made a good showing in the Asian Cup qualifiers, losing only to Thailand in a very close game, 0-1, and beating Iran, a strong women’s team, 6-0. They are ranked 76th in the world now and 34th in Asia,” Gastanes said.
The futsal teams, he said, are currently conducting tryouts.
Football teams’ participation in the SEAG are up in the air as the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission lean  towards sending a “lean team” to Myanmar, with bulky teams not given much priority. National Sports Associations must convince the two bodies that their teams are good for gold or silver at least to make the grade.
Malditas coach Ernie Nierras, meanwhile, said they are looking for other ways to stay competitive and continue their progress in case they would miss out on the SEAG.
“If PSC pushes through with this, it will be our third time missing the SEAG. Regardless the Malditas have progressed. As much as we would like to represent the country, we cannot force the issue. What we can do is create a tournament that will coincide with the SEAG. Invite teams that will help improve our ranking and improve our competitiveness,” Nierras said.
He added that they are “already in the planning stages for an international tournament in December. “We will be inviting Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Guam. All non-SEAG teams. We plan to make this an annual event. This will give us 2 major tournaments every year.”
The Malditas are eyeing friendlies against Haiti in August before plunging into action in the Asean Football Federation Women’s Championship in Mandalay, Myanmar from Sept. 9-22. The Pinays are bunched in Group B with Japan’s U23 team, host Myanmar, Laos and Indonesia.

Palami makes plea as Azkals face SEAG snub

By Karlo Sacamos

The phenomenal growth of football in the Philippines alone should be enough reason to send a national squad to the Southeast Asian Games this December in Myanmar.
There have been reports that the Philippine Sports Commission is not keen on sanctioning a football and volleyball team to the biennial sports event, with chief of mission Jeff Tamayo saying “they can’t guarantee a gold or silver.”
Football in the SEA Games is played among under-23 booters and the Philippine team finished last among six teams in Group B in the 2011 edition in Indonesia.
But Azkals manager and national teams committee chair Dan Palami is adamant a football team deserves to go to the Myanmar Games.
“If there’s a sport that we should not stop from joining, one of them should be football because it’s gaining momentum for us. This is something our under-23s are looking forward to and they will be preparing for that,” he said.
“Costs will be shouldered by private entities anyway so the government will not have to bear the burden of subsidizing the costs,” the 43-year-old entrepreneur from Tacloban added. “I see no reason why they should not be sending football teams there.”
The Philippine Football Federation is planning to send men’s, women’s, and futsal squads in the upcoming SEA Games.
The PSC earlier expressed its plan to send a small delegation to the SEA Games. And PSC commissioner Jolly Gomez on Wednesday admitted the country’s sports governing body is focused more on preparing teams for the Asian Games next year.
“We’re discussing the Southeast Asian Games delegations and the problems of team sports. When you’re looking at team sports, we’re actually looking more toward next year in the Asian Games,” he said.

Malditas to face Japan U23, ASEAN neighbours in AFF Women's Championship

Karl Decena, InterAKTV

The Philippine national women’s football team will face a surprise opponent alongside its Southeast Asian neighbors in the 2013 ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship in September.
The Malditas will play the Under-23 squad of Asian football powerhouse Japan, host Myanmar, Laos and Indonesia in Group B of the competition.
Group A will also feature two surprise teams in Jordan, a participant of the 2014 Women’s Asian Cup, and powerhouse Australia, which will pit its Under-19 team. Also in the group are defending champion Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia.
The Malditas are coming off an impressive stint in the Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers last May, where they routed Iran and Bangladesh but fell short against Thailand in a loss which cost their chances of advancing to the tournament proper next year.
The Philippines has never gone past the group stages of the ASEAN Women’s Championship. Last year, the Malditas placed third in their group behind eventual finalists Vietnam and Myanmar.

Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals of the ASEAN Women’s Championship, which will be played from September 9 to September 22 in Mandalay, Myanmar.
