KAYA squandered two leads and failed to ride on the heroics of Chris Greatwich as it settled for a second straight draw following a 3-3 decision against Green Archers United in a thrilling, see-saw battle in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Despite conjuring a late brace from Greatwich that made up for wasting an early lead, last season’s runner-up failed to gain the victory, although the result was enough to separate them from Pachanga-Diliman and claim solo fourth place with 17 points.
The Archers gained a point for a total of eight, but remained in eighth place.
Filipino-American Antonio Ugarte gave Kaya the early lead as he found the back of the net just nine minutes into the game, before the Archers turned the tables after two quick goals from Jovanie “Manok” Simpron and Chieffy Caligdong within the first 21 minutes of the game.
Kaya, though, mounted a comeback in the second half as Greatwich, a national team member, scored off the rebound in the 68th minute, before scoring one of the best individual, highlight-reel goals this season with a bicycle kick conversion two minutes before stoppage time.
Just when Kaya thought it already sealed the win, Agbayomi Olowoyeye snuck in a goal for the Archers five minutes later to forge the stalemate.
“It’s just disappointing because we can’t keep conceding goals in the game and expect to get something out of it. Nearly again we done a miracle job like we did against Global, but we conceded a goal late in the game,” Kaya coach David Perkovic said.
Goalkeeper Patrick Deyto, the Archers’ last line of defense, expressed his disappointment on his team’s defensive effort in the endgame.
“I think the goals we concede most of the time is because of our own doing. The two goals that they scored earlier wasn’t really their doing. It was our mistake in the first place. So we really have to minimize the errors. Then I think we have a better chance to have clean sheets.”
