United Football League champion Global FC added another star to its talent-laden lineup after acquiring Philippine national men’s football team goalkeeper Eduard Sacapaño from Philippine Army.
The move was the latest Global has done to add local talent to its lineup in preparation for the 2013 Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup in May, a tournament which imposes limits on foreigners.
“I’m joining Global to really help them in the President’s Cup,” Sacapaño told the club’s official website.
The President’s Cup is a club tournament featuring the champion teams from the emerging football nations in Asia and imposes a limit on the number of imports for each team. Global, the first Philippine squad to join the competition, currently has eight foreigners in its roster.
Despite the move, Sacapaño said that he is still an enlisted personnel in the Army as his transfer won’t be long-term.
The veteran keeper will be joining the powerhouse lineup of Global, which boasts a number of Azkals members and foreign imports. More than a week ago, the squad also acquired Azkals midfielder Jason De Jong on loan from UFL rival Stallion Sta.Lucia.
“It’s just like you’re in the national team,” Sacapaño said.
Sacapaño took the spotlight for the Azkals in the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup last year as he stepped up between the sticks with the absence of top keepers Neil Etheridge and Roland Mueller.
