Philippine national men’s football coach Hans Michael Weiss signed a contract extension Monday to continue calling the shots for the Azkals.
He confirmed the news to InterAKTV in a text message.
Weiss has coached the Azkals since 2011, shortly after the team crashed the semifinals of the previous year’s Suzuki Cup. Under his watch, the team has scaled unprecedented heights, qualifying for the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup and winning its first international title in 99 years in the Philippine Football Peace Cup.
Earlier reports indicated that Weiss would sign a six-month contract with an option to extend depending on the Azkals’ performance in the qualifiers this March for the 2014 Challenge Cup.
Weiss told InterAKTV that beyond qualifying for the tournament, his goal for the Azkals is to win the Challenge Cup, “which would mean the automatic entry into the AFC Asian Cup 2015 in Australia.”
“That is what I want to reach,” he said.
