Philippine national men’s football coach Hans Michael Weiss is close to signing a contract extension with the Azkals, he said Friday.
Weiss, whose two-year contract expired last Wednesday, said that the Philippine Football Federation and the Azkals management are only finalizing the details of the new deal, which will keep him with the squad for at least the next six months.
“I have presented the points that I want to have in the contract. Now they have to finalize the paper,” Weiss told InterAKTV. “If everything is agreed on, we can sign anytime.”
Last week, the PFF offered Weiss a six-month extension which will allow the German coach to steer the Azkals in the 2014 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifiers in March, a tournament which could determine his tenure depending on the squad’s performance.
The Azkals advanced to the Challenge Cup proper last year, bagging a third-place finish.
Apart from that, Weiss also led the Azkals to the country’s first football title in 99 year, in the Philippine Football Peace Cup last year, as well as a second straight semifinal run in the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup.
Weiss was hired upon the recommendation of the German Football Association, which gave financial assistance for the Philippines’ football development two years ago.
