Scoreless draw "good result" for Azkals , says Coach Weiss
Karl Decena, InterAKTV
The Philippine national men’s football team may have settled for a scoreless draw against Singapore Saturday night in the first leg of the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup semifinals, but coach Hans Michael Weiss isn’t complaining about the result.
Weiss said keeping Singapore scoreless was a good result for the Azkals, as away goals in the Suzuki Cup semifinals have more value than the home goals. That means that in case of a tied aggregate score after the second leg, the away goals will determine which team will advance to the final.
“People think that we have to win the match. It’s not the case,” Weiss said after the match.
“I was saying to the players and the management that a 0-0 result is a very good result for us. If we have a 1-1 or 2-2, they’re gonna go to the final.”
Given the scenario, Weiss said that the pressure is now on Singapore to go on the attack in the second leg of the semifinals, set on December 12 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
“Now, the ball is in Singapore. They have to do something. They have to be more active and that gives us chances for counterattack,” Weiss said.
Weiss is optimistic that a finals ticket is within reach fro the Azkals.
“We have all the possibility to be confident,” he said. “We now have to make the next step which is to reach the final.”
this is it right here coach weiss, this is your shot at the "shining moment". you have very good players in the team. your job, as with every great coaches, and the very reason why you still have this job, is to elevate their games, take the team to the highest level.
ReplyDeletedon't screw this one up.
Weiss is trying to make a positive spin on a poorly played game where he was badly outcoached by the Singaporean manager.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Southern California!
ReplyDeleteI hope the second leg doesn't result into 0-0 score at the end of regulation game. That'll turn into an overtime period and if still scoreless will turn into an eventual penalty shootout. This puts a lot of pressure on EdSac our GK, who will have to parry 5 shots directly on his goal. EdSac's success can be attributed to his stellar performance and the "Back-4" who filtered all attempts from Thailand, Vietnam Myanmar and Singapore. A penalty shootout won't have the luxury of a "Back'4" buffering for EdSac. Azkals need to score and zip Singapore at their home field on the next match.
All the best to Coach Weiss and his players!
Great insight. I agree.
DeleteActually if we get another draw in the next game we could still advance or win the semis because scoring on the away game weighs more than scoring in a home game (if it's a scoring draw 1:1, 2:2, etc..).
DeleteTo the anonymous writers from 19:16 and 19:41, I must say your comments are understandable, but you must realize that Coach Weiss wants to win this match more that anything. I'm also confident that you both understand the mechanics of the beautiful game, so please suggest or contribute something constructive, something that will help the team. Thanks you.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya. At this level its not just about wanting to win -- that's elementary and high school football/soccer. Him wanting to win is not enough to effect the "mechanics" of the game in our favor. Every coach wants to win. There are coaches and great coaches, and he now has a chance to prove to the country if he is a great coach or just another coach.
Deletei don't think weiss was outsmarted by the singapore coach, it was a scoreless draw right? so it's about even, anyway, the pressure is on singapore now as they haven't been able to breach our defense for 3 straight games now. we must be more aggressive now in the 2nd leg, we have nothing to lose and everything to play for.
ReplyDeleteAs Mike Limpag and others said, we were lucky to get that draw. For some reason, we have always been coming out flat in the first half in this tournament and even more so against Singapore. The Azkals are so predictable on offence that Singapore's coach made the proper adjustments to compensate for that. That is why I said Weiss was outcoached again by his equivalent. Right now we are the least dynamic team left in the semifinals. It is possible we can eke out an ugly win, but it is sure not pretty to look at.
DeleteCoach Weiss is talking shit. He knows a 0-0 result
ReplyDeleteat home means the advantage swings to the home team in the return game.
Hopefully not, but if the Azkals score first get ready
for a game to remember.
Actually all we need to do is get another scored draw like 1:1, 2:2, etc. that's all we need because away scores weighs more. So the pressure to win big in on Singapore. That's what Weiss is saying the we are in a good position and that it's up to Singapore to edge us out because a scored draw is to our advantage. Lets just not hope for a scoreless draw on the other hand.
