Azkals left with draw after late defensive slip vs Malaysians

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Filipino-German striker Denis Wolf scored his first international goal, but the Philippines was denied of a famous victory after Suzuki Cup champions Malaysia snatched a 1-1 draw with a late equalizer at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Wednesday night.

In the first meeting between two squads that reached the knockout stage of the Suzuki Cup two years ago, Wolf opened the scoring with a diving header off a long throw by defender Jason Sabio in the 34th minute to the delight of the close to 8,000 home fans.

The Azkals played some glittering attacking football for long stretches, but they were made to pay for their failure to finish off the Malaysians deep in injury time.

Substitute Ahmad Shakr Ali faked Sabio, sending the previously rock-solid defender sliding on the pitch, before firing past Neil Etheridge with his left foot for the leveler in the 91st minute.

“We were unlucky but it was a fair result,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss.

The Azkals got off to a lively start with Wolf and Phil Younghusband testing Norazlan Razali, before they finally found the breakthrough.

Sabio had sent a couple of long throws that caused trouble inside the Malaysian box. With the Malaysians caught napping, Wolf struck it low with his head and found the bottom corner.

Malaysia looked a step slower as it failed to train since arriving last Monday.

But Safee Sali looked dangerous up front and he came close with a shot that went wide. Safiq Rahim, the skipper, also failed to find the target after a fine layoff from Safee.

Malaysia started the livelier team in the second half, but Safee was surprisingly wasteful, skying a shot in the 46th minute.

Etheridge produced a string of fine saves, while Angel Guirado showed some fine skill on the other end with a curling shot that just bounced off the bar.

Azkals almost pull off Malaysia upset

by Dennis Gasgonia, ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals nearly pulled off an upset victory over reigning Suzuki Cup champion Malaysia during their international friendly at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Wednesday night.

The Azkals, who looked confident after their 10-day training camp in Dubai, scored a goal against their Malaysian opponents before conceding one late in the game.

The Filipinos played aggressively in the first half, attacking the goal with consistency while forcing the Malaysians into defensive mode.

In the 34th minute, Filipino-German striker Denis Wolf pulled the Azkals ahead, 1-0, with a diving header off Jason Sabio’s long throw.

The Filipinos had 9 shots on the goal by the end of the first half, which forced the Tigers to regroup.

The Azkals appeared headed to the victory when Malaysia’s Ahmad Shakir Mohd Ali scored the equalizer a minute into injury time.

The friendly game is part of the Azkals’ preparation for the coming 2012 Challenge Cup in Nepal this March.

“Overall I think we all can be pleased against a very solid and strong team with a good style of football play... we were a bit unlucky in the end but overall I think we fared well,” said Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss.

Weiss noted the efforts of Wolf, Sabio, midfielder Lexton Moy and Fil-British keeper Neil Etheridge.

“Neil is solid as we know, Lexton Moy very good, Jason Sabio very solid... but the whole team played with big fighting spirit. Denis Wolf, just 2 days in the country, almost playing 90 minutes and scoring the goal. Could've been the hero,” said the Azkals coach.

Even Malaysian coach Datuk Rajagobal commended the Filipinos for giving them a spirited fight.

He said the Azkals played a physical game and that his players were forced to adapt.

“Both of the teams played well, both played with hunger and determination. I also give credit to the Philippines, I think it was a satisfying match,” said Rajagobal.

Team manager Dan Palami said the fact that they drew with one of the best teams in Southeast Asia says a lot about the Azkals.

“I commend the boys,” said Palami. “It's Malaysia, they're Suzuki Cup champions. They’ve been playing against teams that were really high quality.”

The Azkals will be having just a day’s rest before flying to Nepal for the Challenge Cup.

Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta said the team will be leaving for Kathmandu on March 2 to acclimatize in time for their Challenge Cup campaign.

Kathmandu has an elevation of about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level.

Weiss said the Filipinos should get used to the high altitude before facing defending champion North Korea on March 9.

This will be followed with games against India (March 11) and Tajikistan (March 13).

The games will be aired live on Studio 23.

"We've always wanted to go toe the semis [of the Challenge Cup],” said Palami. “This is the first time the Philippines have actually entered the final stage and we are actually the lowest ranked team among the teams that qualified.”

“We want, just like what we did in the Suzuki Cup to reach the semifinals at least. If we can make it, that would be a dream come true."

Azkals expect 'good test' against Malaysians

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals expect to be tested when they play against the Malaysian national football team in a friendly Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Malaysia won the 2010 Suzuki Cup and are ranked 150th by FIFA, while the Azkals are ranked 156th. The Azkals were eliminated in the semi-finals of that tournament.

The Azkals are now seeking to measure themselves against the Malaysians.

“We were gutted two years ago to get knocked out. This would be a good test for us,” said Azkals first-choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

“They are the reigning Suzuki Cup champion, so obviously they are a quality team. Whenever you play a quality team, it’s a good test to see where you are and also an opportunity to get better,” added Jason Sabio.

Etheridge believes that the match will be a friendly in name only.

“We’ve got people watching, and in that respect, we have something to lose,” he said. “This is just a friendly game, but I think I speak on behalf of all the players when I say that a friendly game is just a name.”

“Obviously, we want to win tomorrow night and I think we’re quite capable of doing so,” he added.

Preparation

Azkals head coach Michael Weiss is hoping that playing in the Rizal Memorial Stadium will give the Azkals an edge against the visiting Malaysians.

“We are very strong when we play at home,” Weiss said. “Like most of the teams when they go out, they don’t have the same confidence, so I hope we can take advantage of that.”

The friendly will also serve as preparation for the upcoming AFC Challenge Cup next month in Nepal, Weiss said.

“We will have to see after that where we still have to adapt or get better. Apart from excitement, it will give us clear view on defense shape,” he said.

Weiss is expecting the Azkals to give a good effort in the game, especially with Etheridge playing.

“I expect the team to be defensively organized and balanced and hopefully not allow a goal,” Weiss said. “We have Phil and James (Younghusband) coming back, so we have a decent group even without the players based abroad.”

Datuk K. Rajagopal, head coach of the Malaysian national team, has said that he is expecting a good challenge from the Azkals.

“I think you have a very good, real strong team... I’m definitely expecting a tough match to be honest,” he said.

Moving forward

The Azkals are hoping for a positive result in tomorrow’s friendly in order to continue the progress of football in the Philippines.

“I take massive pride in the progress we’ve taken,” Etheridge said. “You’re not always gonna win every game, but to think that two years ago, this was a team that was unnoticed in this country.”

“We’ve taken massive steps forward,” he added.

“We’re really looking forward to the game and if we can get a good result, then that would be good steps for Philippine football again,” Phil Younghusband said.

Malaysian nat'l football team arrives in PH

MANILA, Philippines – The Malaysian national football team has arrived in the Philippines two days before they are set to take on the Philippine Azkals in a friendly match.

The Azkals are expected to have a tough time against the Malaysians when they play on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Malaysia was the champion of the 2010 AFC Suzuki Cup and are ranked 150 by FIFA, while the Azkals are ranked 156th.

Meanwhile, Azkals first choice goal keeper Neil Etheridge also arrived in the Philippines from England last Sunday.

Rob Gier and Ray Johnsson are also expected to arrive from Europe. All three players are expected to play against Malaysia on Wednesday. – Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News

LSGH nails 10th straight NCAA Jr. football title

La Salle Green Hills-College of St. Benilde fashioned out a dramatic 2-0 win over San Beda recently to complete an unprecedented 10 consecutive junior football title in the NCAA Season ’87 at the PhilSports turf in Pasig City.

Rookie Mathew Custodio struck in the 13th minute and Best Striker Anton Celdran doubled the lead for LSGH after a free kick from just outside the box in the 37th.
San Beda came back hard but the Blazers’ defense, built around co-captains Joaquin Atayde and Eugene De Chavez, and Best Defender Julito Asparen and goalkeeper Enrico Barcia frustrated the Red Cubs’ offense.

Team skipper and MVP Jeune Custodio III kept order in the LSGH midfield in the first half until he was carried out on a stretcher with a knee injury after a collision.

The other awardees in the junior division were Ronilio Bayan Jr. of Arellano University (Best Goalkeeper), Roberto Plopinio of SBC (Best Midfielder) and Edienzel Mark Vilizano of Perpetual Help (Best Scorer). The Fair Play Award went to LSGH.

The Red Lions retained their seniors crown after sweeping the first and second rounds.

Azkals off early for Kathmandu

The Philippine Azkals will leave early for Kathmandu, Nepal to acclimatize and familiarize themselves with the environs of the high-altitude site for the AFC Challenge Cup group stages next month.

According to Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta, the Azkals will pack their bags for the Nepalese capital on March 2, a good one week before they kick off their campaign in Group B against defending champion North Korea at the Halchowk Stadium.

“It’s a high altitude city so they have to be there early to acclimatize,” Araneta told The STAR yesterday.

Kathmandu has an elevation of about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level, with an average temperature of 7.5 to 24.3 degrees Celcius during the month of March.

“I requested to go early, five or six days ahead of original schedule, to get used to the high altitude,” Azkals coach Michael Weiss said during the UAAP football finals.

The Azkals, bogged by lack of time to gather the players for training under Weiss, are in a “group of death” in the Challenge Cup.

After North Korea, the Azkals will take on 2008 champion India on March 11 at Dashrath Stadium, and then 2006 titlist Tajikistan on March 13 at Halchowk Stadium, eyeing to finish in the top 2 in the group to advance to the semis.

But before embarking on their bid in the Challenge Cup, an international competition among emerging nations, the Azkals (156th in the world) will face a big test in a Fifa friendly against ASEAN powerhouse Malaysia Tigers (150th) tomorrow night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

“It will be a massive test for us to see where we stand at the moment,” first choice custodian Neil Etheridge said in a report on ABS-CBN.

The Tigers are preparing to repeat as Suzuki Cup kings later in the year, and in their buildup, decided to pit skills with the Azkals, a side that made a breakthrough performance in the 2010 tourney. The Azkals reached the semis for the first time ever in the last Suzuki Cup, sparking the sport’s renaissance in the country.

“Obviously getting to the semifinals two years ago was a massive achievement for us and we want to continue progressing and making steps in the right direction,” Etheridge said.

Gone in 3 minutes: Laos bully Azkals

Ak Fauzi Salleh
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, February 27, 2012

THREE goals in three minutes helped Laos hand the Philippines their second defeat in as many games in this year's edition of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) last night.

Sithideth Khantahavong, Soukaphone Vongchiengkham and Keoviengpheth Lithideth were all on the scoresheet as Laos defeated the Azkals 3-1 at the Balapan Track & Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The Philippines, who are now bottom of Group A, were thrashed 8-2 by Myanmar on Friday.

Yesterday's victory puts Laos third of the five-team group.

Both teams started slowly producing no real chances in the first 15 minutes of the game.

The first real chance of the first half fell to the Philippines when midfielder Marvin Janver Malinay Angeles dribbled past three Laos' defenders in the 17th minute on the left side of the box, but only to see his cross blocked by a defender.

Laos captain Lamnao Singto then played a great through ball to Sithideth, who made a very good run behind the Philippines' backline and calmly slotted the ball past Paulo Pascual to give Laos 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

A minute later the Philippine defenders made another mistake allowing Soukaphone to make it 2-0.

The third goal saw Soukaphone Vongchiengkham set up Keoviengpheth for an easy tap in the 25th minute.

Angelo Verheye Marasigan then reduced the deficit in the 41st minute netting in the 41st minute for the Azkals.

The Philippines played better and faster football in the second half. They also moved the ball well, but failed to convert the chances.

Laos had a chance to extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute but defender Ketsada Souksavanh saw his spotkick sail over the bar.

"I am not really happy with the performance of the players tonight (Sunday night), they missed so many chances, we also missed a penalty. I am not happy," said Bounlap Khenkitisack, the Laos manager, at a Press conference.

"In the next game we will play Singapore, we do not have the time to watch Singapore play as their game against Indonesia was played at the same time as ours.

"But, I think it is going to be a 50-50 match," he added. The Brunei Times

Philippines coach reduced to tears

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Monday, February 27, 2012

ZORAN Djordjevic (pic) was left in tears following the Philippines' 3-1 loss to Laos during last night's Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) game.

Their second loss in as many games their first was the 8-2 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Myanmar on Friday the Philippines' head coach seemed heart broken about the result which leaves the Azkals bottom of Group A.

"It's really difficult for us to progress now," said the Serbian at the post-match Press conference at the Balapan Track & Field at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

"Everything that we planned in this match did not work well. I really feel sorry for my boys, they gave their best in the match.

"I have been coaching for 33 years and have coached in many countries before. I've never seen boys with such a big heart ... it was a mistake for me to put them in a very hard competition when they are not ready yet.

"I hope the people in the Philippines will continue to support these wonderful young players, they are very talented but we need to get support from the Philippines government to get them good preparation to compete in the future," added Djordjevic, who has only coached the team for the past month.

Mathematically though, the Filipinos still have a chance at making the semi-finals if they pick up big wins their next two games and other results go their way.

The Philippines face Singapore tomorrow at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas and meet Indonesia on Sunday at the Balapan Track & Field, in Berakas. The Brunei Times

Despite short preparation, CFA Under-14 tops ranking of PFF Regional Football Festival

By Cheska D. Geli

Monday, February 27, 2012

THE Cebu Football Association Under-14 Elite team topped the Philippine Football Federation Regional Festival of Football yesterday at San Carlos City.

The weekend tournament was a developmental game, which serves as talent identification for the national pool in the Boys Under-14 and Girls Under-13, which are set to compete in international tournaments.

Team Cebu won all of its four games despite the short period of preparation.

Cebu defeated Negros Occidental Football Association,1-0, in the first day. In the second day, it fished another win over the Iloilo Football Association, 3-0, and completed the sweep when it routed Negros Oriental Football Association, 1-0 and Leyte Football Association, 9-0.

Head coach Jong Perez and his assistant Totot Colina said they were not expecting this finish by team Cebu, which was only formed two weeks ago.

“We were not expecting this. We simplified our game plan in our functional drills during the short period of our practice. Unexpectedly, the plan worked and it showed how our players gelled well as seen in their performance as a team,” said Perez.

Perez commended his boys for a good job in attacking and defending. He added that the technical level of his individual players as well as the tactical skills, were also impressive.

Meanwhile, CFA Girls Under-13 placed second to NOFA, whose players are mostly from San Carlos City.

The girls had one win, one draw and two losses as they played NOFA four times in the event. Since the two were the only teams in the girls division, they needed to play four matches before a winner was declared.

San Carlos and Davao City held held simultaneous festivals of football, while Luzon will conduct it next week.

Among the important components of the festival is the skills test, a series of drills for the kids, which is the basis of the coaches who scout for players.

The coaches will submit to PFF a list of recommended players who will be called in the future to be part of the training pool.

Crazyhorse makes Aboitiz Cup semis, to play without Fegidero next week

By Cheska D. Geli

Monday, February 27, 2012

DEFENDING champion Crazyhorse FC stood its ground as it defeated Panalpina FC, 1-0, in their highly-physical men’s open game of the 14th Aboitiz Cup yesterday at the Aboitiz Football Field.

The win gave the Crazyhorse a ticket to the semifinal round set next week.

Veteran player Joshua Fegidero scored the winning goal in the 22nd minute to give Crazyhorse the lead early in the first half.

But it became a different story in the second half after a clash with Panalpina’s Bryan Flores booked them both with red cards that forced them out of the game.

Flores was defending Fegidero, when the two got too close for comfort. As the two collided in a tense situation, Flores allegedly punched Fegidero, who retaliated with a blow.

A short commotion ensued with the Crazyhorse goalkeeper leaving his post to join the fracas.

This was the second altercation of the two players after Fegidero was elbowed by Flores and was handed a yellow card earlier in the game.

Cooler heads prevailed and the match continued with Crazyhorse getting the semifinals slot.

It will, however, miss the services of Fegidero by virtue of an automatic one-game suspension because of the incurred red card.

“Okay naman, naayos na. Pasok na kami sa semis kaso sayang lang at hindi makakalaro si Joshua,” said Crazyhorse player Gary Panagsagan.

Panalpina, on the other hand, admitted that they lost the motivation to play after the minor encounters happened.

“It affected our game. We lacked practice, communication and motivation,” said Voltaire Montebon of Panalpina.

In earlier matches, the University of San Jose Recoletos- Alumni won against San Roque Football Club, 3-1, while Erco FC and DB Magone ended with a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, the University of San Jose Recoletos emerged the winner in the men’s Under-23 division against University of Cebu, 1-0.

UAAP Football: Maroons bag back-to-back via 1-0 win

Roehl Niño Bautista, GMA News

University of the Philippines Fighting Maroon Jinggoy Valmayor's emphatic 61st minute goal versus the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers was enough for the UAAP men's football defending champs to keep the crown in Diliman, after a 1-0 nail-biter in the 74th season of the UAAP.

The sophomore striker found Jay Eusebio's through ball that sent the rival squad's defenses scrambling back to the box in vain.

"It feels so great na two years pa lang ako sa UP tapos dalawang championship na," said Valmayor, who was last season's top scorer and rookie of the year.

With their 1-nil win at the Ateneo High School field on Sunday, UP grabbed their third title in four years, bringing their championship tally to 16 crowns.

"We started off very, very bad [in the] first round," recalled Maroons head coach Anto Gonzales of their football stalemate slump. But redemption came sweet with a dominant second round effort that earned them a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals.

UST, meanwhile, was reminded of their 2-1 defeat last year as UP denied them the crown once again.

Striker OJ Clarino, whose collegiate football career ended on a losing note, said that he has his sights on academics.

"Marami pang ibang magagaling," said Clarino about his Philippine National Football Team gig. He joined the country's South East Asia Games U-23 campaign with Valmayor last year.

Earlier in the ladies' match, the De La Salle University Lady Archers forced a winner-take-all Finals meeting after forcing the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses to burn their twice-to-beat incentive.

After both sides went scoreless in regular time, the game was decided in a penalty shootout that the Green and White won, 4-3. – AMD, GMA News

MANILA, Philippines—Kaya guns for a share of top spot when it battles Army Fritz and Macziol Saturday in the United Football League at the University of Makati field.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m. with the Kaya booters looking for their fifth win that will put them level on points with the Loyola Meralco Sparks, who have a big edge on goal difference after a 14-0 victory over Navy last weekend.

The match will be the last for both teams, before the league goes on a break because of the AFC Challenge Cup.

Army is coming off a 3-2 nipping of Navy Wednesday, ending a four-match winless run. But it is also playing its third match in five days, while Kaya enjoyed a week’s rest after a 3-nil conquest of Pasargad.

National team striker Nate Burkey ended his scoring drought in the win, while Ivorian striker Eric Dagroh and Liberian midfielder Prince Boley also found the back of the net.

“We expect a physical match,” said Kaya defender Jason Sabio. “We want to enter the one-month hiatus on a positive note.”

Army will miss Nestorio Margarse, who has been called up to Under-21 side in the Hassanal Bolkiah Cup in Brunei.

Team Socceroo, led by celebrities Daniel Matsunaga and Fabio Ide, take on Union Internacionale Manila at 4 p.m. in a second division match that will also be aired live on AKTV on IBC13.

CFA posts first win in PFF regionals

By Cheska D. Geli

Friday, February 24, 2012

THE Cebu Football Under-14 Team is off to a good start after stamping its first win in the PFF Regional Festival of Football yesterday in San Carlos City.

It won its match against Negros Occidental Football Association, 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Don Bosco booter Angelo Ouano in the fifth minute of the match.

“Overall, the boys really played well,” said head coach Jong Perez.

The Cebu team dominated the ball possession of the game and had a number of goal chances but unfortunately failed to convert.

“They are now communicating well and I am confident he will see them improve more in upcoming games,” said Perez.

Perez added he will have to train his boys more in finishing plays because they were ahead in ball possessions but missed their chances in getting more goals.

The team now has three points and they will try to continue the winning streak as they play Iloilo today at 2:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Cebu Football Under-13 team dropped its first match against NOFA, 2-1, in the first match but was able to pull a 1-1 draw against the same team in the second meeting.

Since only CFA and NOFA were able to send a girls team in the regional tournament, the two teams need to meet four times to determine the champion based on the league type format.

Etheridge to play in Azkals match vs Malaysia

by Edward Lao, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau

LONDON - The Philippine Azkals' first choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has confirmed he will be playing in the national team's friendly match against Malaysia on February 29.

The match, taking place at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, is the final tune-up game for the Azkals ahead of this year's AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal.

Malaysia, currently 150th in the FIFA world rankings, is the defending 2010 Suzuki Cup champion. Etheridge feels it will be a stern test to see how far the Azkals have progressed since their last tournament.

"It will be a massive test for us to see where we stand at the moment. Obviously getting to the semi-finals two years ago was a massive achievement for us and we want to continue progressing and making steps in the right direction,” Etheridge said.

The Azkals, ranked 156th in the FIFA standings, stunned Asian football when they made it to the semi-final stage of the 2010 Suzuki Cup.

Philippine Head Coach Michael Weiss and Manager Dan Palami have stated they want to emulate that achievement by reaching the semis of this competition. Etheridge believes that anything can happen.

“In football, I've said it many times before, that anything is possible. We didn't expect to get to the semi-finals of the Suzuki Cup two years ago. We were the biggest underdogs there, the lowest ranked team, and lost over two legs, one zero, one zero, against Indonesia, which is a very strong team. In all honesty, it was unexpected, but we believe we can take steps forward and become a much stronger force in football", Etheridge said.

European-based Filipinos Paul Mulders, Ray Jonsson and Rob Gier will all be suiting up for the Azkals in the Challenge Cup, while Stephan Shrock and Dennis Cagara will be confirming their availability as the tournament nears.

Etheridge wants to participate but is unsure whether he will be released by his employers - English Premier League side Fulham FC.

"I know that Fulham want me to stay around the club as often as possible. As much as I'd love to go to the Challenge Cup, because it's a great competition and we've got such a hard group, and I want to compete, it's too far away really to say whether I'll be there or not yet", he said.

The Philippines is pooled in the same group as India, Tajikistan and defending Challenge Cup champions DPR Korea (North Korea). The AFC Challenge Cup will take place from March 8-13.

Azkals face Malaysians in friendly

BY BONG PEDRALVEZ

FOOTBALL chief Mariano Araneta Jr. and German coach Michael Weiss like the prospects of the Philippine Azkals when they play Southeast Asian soccer powerhouse Malaysia in friendly match on Feb. 29 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

"With our defense improving and our attack reinforced with the return of Phil Younghusband, I believe we stand a very good chance of beating Malaysia," said Araneta, noting the addition of fellow Barotac Nuevo native and comebacking Ruben Doctora Jr. in the lineup.

"What we need are quick strikers and I believe Doctora can also supply that," said Araneta of the 26-year-old standout of second running Giligan FC in the UFL.

The stocky but speedy forward is set to suit up in front of the hometown crowd opposite another national squad for the first time since playing for the Azkals in the 2008 Asian Challenge Cup group eliminations in Iloilo.

With Phil Younghusband and Fil-German Denis Wolf tipped to be the starting forwards in spearheading the attack against the reigning Southeast Asian champions, Doctora, fellow Ilonggo Ian Araneta and Misagh Bahadoran will be coming off the bench to provide instant offense should the need arise.

Weiss echoed Araneta’s hopes, saying: "I rate our chances good against Malaysia."

He pointed out the return of Phil and James Younghusband, who missed the Azkals’ last tune-up match against the Australian Olympic Under-23 squad in Doha that ended in a 1-2 loss, would boost the transition from defense to offense.

"We should be more uniform and compact defensively that will help us switch fast to offensive-oriented play," Weiss said. "With Wolf and Phil pairing off for the first time in front of the home crowd, the game should be exciting."

Weiss and Araneta’s renewed optimism were also based on the fact Fil-British goalkeeper Neil Etheridge will be back in harness to mind the net, although the German mentor said he was just at home with Fil-German goalie Roland Muller.

"I’m confident with either (Muller or Etheridge) one," he said.

Araneta said Muller would not be available for the Malaysia friendly but will play for the team in next month’s AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal.

For his defenders, Weiss said he will pin his hopes on Juan Luis Guirado, younger brother of striker Angel, Ray Jonsson, Jason Sabio or Dennis Cagara "if he can make it."

PH U-21 football squad up vs tough teams in Brunei meet

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Under-21 (U-21) football team will be grinding it out with tough squads when the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) invitational kicks off on Friday.

The Filipino U-21 team is bracketed together with Singapore, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar in Group A.

Host country Brunei is grouped together with Cambodia, Timor Leste, Vietnam and Malaysia in Group B.

“We only had about a month to practice and we're going up against teams who have been together for two years or so, it’s kinda tough,” said midfielder Marvin Angeles on the Philippine Azkals’ official website.

The U-21 team trained under their new coach, Serbian Zoran Dordevic, who arrived in the country a month ago.

Making up the team are:

Christopher Camcam
Paolo Pascual
Marwin Angeles
Marvin Angeles
Joshua Beloya
Jacques Van Bossche
Gabriel Borja
Jeremy James Theuer
Dwight Kevin Sendino
Alejandro Baldo Jr.
David Franz Pusing
Angelo Marasigan
Amani Manuel Aguinaldo
Joseph Andrew San Martin
Russel Anthony Pierson

This year’s HBT is allowing players over 21 year old to join the tournament, prompting the coaching staff to include Nestorio Margarse Jr., Jerry Barbaso, Ruben Doctora Jr. and Aaron Altich to the roster.

Caligdong, Gier still doubtful for Malaysia tiff

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine Azkals co-captain Chieffy Caligdong and veteran defender Rob Gier remain doubtful for the international friendly against Malaysia on Feb. 29 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Caligdong is still undergoing therapy for his injured knee and could skip the match to focus on his fitness in time for the AFC Challenge Cup in Kathmandu, Nepal, starting March 9.

“I think I’m making progress because I can do sprints now, but I still can’t put a lot of power on my kicks,” said Caligdong, the recipient of the Philippine Sportswriters’ Association’s Mr. Football Award along with Azkals teammate Phil Younghusband.

Gier is nursing a calf problem, but the Filipino-British defender said he could have come on as a substitute against Australia’s Olympic Team in the last match of the Azkals’ training camp in Dubai Thursday night.

“I’m feeling better, but its also difficult to take the risk (of aggravating the injury),” said Gier. “It’s better to be injured now than in the Challenge Cup.”

With Gier unlikely to play, the Azkals will parade the same backline in the last two matches of the camp in the in-form Jason Sabio, Juani Guirado, Ray Jonsson and Carli de Murga.

First-choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has already confirmed his participation in the friendly against the reigning Suzuki Cup champions, which will mark the final game before the Azkals plunge into action in the Challenge Cup.

Also returning to the Azkals fold are Netherlands-based Jason de Jong and brothers Phil and James Younghusband, who missed the Australia match because of a prior commitment.

“I think we will still have a very good team against Malaysia,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami. “As much as we would want Rob and Chieffy to play, we are more worried of their fitness level for the Challenge Cup.”

Meanwhile, the Philippine Under-21 side reinforced by senior team players Nestorio Margarse and Jerry Barbaso left for Brunei yesterday to vie in the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy.

The 11-nation tournament will mark the first time Serbian coach Zoran Dordevic will handle the side formed only two months ago.

“This is good exposure for our young players as we start our build-up for next year’s SEA Games,” said Palami, who also manages the U-21 team.

SEA Games stalwarts Joshua Beloya and Marwin Angeles, who are already regulars in the senior side, will play the first two matches, including the opener against Indonesia on Friday, before returning to Manila in time for the friendly against Malaysia.

Limpag: Off the record with Coach Michael Weiss

By Mike T. Limpag

Fair Play

Thursday, February 23, 2012

DAVAO CITY - I was supposed to write about Coach Graeme today, but I think my friend would understand if for now, I’d talk about Coach Michael Weiss.

Especially that, just as I was to take my seat to meet coach Weiss again the other night he says, “…especially when I’m reading this bullshit story,” while pointing to me, and, before leaving, he says, “I hope to educate this boy (again, while pointing to me) about football.”

Between those two statements, of course, we talked. A lot. I pointed out a few things and he was thanking me for the stories (including that BS story) and he pointed out a few things that not even the most diligent fan who read anything about Philippine football may have realized.

And you know what? The funny thing is, those who criticize Weiss a lot would be surprised to know that they share the same points with the coach.

And I told Coach Weiss about this. I want to get him on the record! I wanted to do our talk again because what he had to say about Philippine football is something every fan—both those who like him and those who don’t—should know.

“No, no, no, no. Don’t write about this,” he said in that tough German way of his, as I was going for my pen and notebook to take notes of what he said.

And in this business, when somebody says that, you have to respect it because guys like us are only as good as our word.

But you know what? Under that tough German exterior is a guy who is just like you and me, one who is looking out for his family. One who get hurts when the comments get too personal.

“I wear a mask,” he said. “But inside?”

Yes, it’s part of the job of being the head coach of a national team and the guy digs it.

“At the end of the day, football is all about results,” he said.

Though most of our talk was off the record, coach Weiss also mentioned some things that he had already talked with the media about so I’m going to share it.

On the Challenge Cup expectations.

“We are not going to say we are going to aim for the semifinals but we are not going to give up either.”

On who’s playing.

“It’s going to be a race against the clock on who can come. Every day, I am in constant communication with the players (overseas) and their managers. Stephen Shrock, I hope he can come for the last two matches. With him, we are doing it the smart way, we won’t be asking him to come for the Malaysia game because if we will, the club will say, ‘OK Shrock will attend Malaysia game but not Challenge Cup.’ That’s the same for the other players.”

Neil Etheridge or Roland Muller?

“I am confident with either one of them. For our back four, it’s going to be Juan Luis, Gier, Jonsson and Sabio or Cagara if he can make it. Sabio has been playing really, really well for us and has improved a lot. Against Kuwait, (away match, second round of World Cup 2014 qualifiers) he made mistakes but lately, he’s been very good.”
On Chieffy Caligdong’s injury.

“He’s improving but right now, I think he’s good for 30 minutes.”

On tactics and substitutions.

“We are going to get punished if we get too offensive….So like the game against Australia, I parked the bus, like everyone is saying, in the first half but in the second half, I made some changes….For the subs, every morning before a match, I meet with the subs for 30 minutes. I talk to them, I explain their roles, what is needed and what is expected of them and they understand it. They are fine with it.”

DAVAO SOJOURN. For the next four days, it’s going to be all about golf from my end as I’m covering the PAL Interclub men’s tournament for the sixth straight year.

I love covering this event because it makes me feel young. Football tournaments make me feel old, but golf, especially when I’m with guys who’ve been covering this tournament even before I was born?

And this Saturday, I plan to introduce the editors of the Manila broadsheets to the UFL by tuning in to Aksyon TV during game day.

CFA to send two teams to PFF tilt

THE CEBU Football Association (CFA) will be sending two teams to the Boys Under 14/Girls Under 13 Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Regional Festival of Football in San Carlos City on Feb. 24 to 26.

Assigned to coach the boys U14 are Jhong Perez of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and Restituto Colina Jr. of San Roque Football Club.

Picked to coach the girls U13 are Claudith Zapanta of Don Bosco Technology Center and Marloe Solon of Montessori Lapu-Lapu.

The coaches must have a C license or those who took the C license under the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

CFA’s Eleazar Toledo said that the festival will serve as a talent identification to beef up the country’s teams that will be seeing action in the AFC football festival this year.

Those who will be scouted in the boys U14 will be added to the Little Azkals lineup.

CFA would have sent the champion teams of the 14th Aboitiz Football Cup, but the tournament is still ongoing so they scheduled a tryout early this month to comprise Cebu’s boys U14 and girls U13 teams.

Toledo said for the regional qualifiers of the U16, U19 and U23 PFF-organized tournaments that will kick off in March and April, the CFA will be sending the champion teams in the ongoing Aboitiz Football Cup./CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON

Azkals may miss Chieffy, Gier for Malaysian game

By Olmin Leyba

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals might opt to rest injured veterans Chieffy Caligdong and Rob Gier for their Fifa international friendly with reigning AFF Suzuki Cup champions Malaysia on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Ilonggo left winger Caligdong is nursing an LCL (lateral collateral ligament), an MCL (medial collateral ligament) and a partial ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) on his left knee while Fil-British defender Gier is recovering from an injured calf.

The two accompanied the Azkals in their recent training camp in Dubai and Doha but not fit enough to play, didn’t get to see action in any of the three friendlies there.

Azkals team manager Dan Palami hinted the possibility that the two seasoned stalwarts might sit out the fixture against Malaysia, apparently hoping they would recuperate in time for the bigger task ahead – the AFC Challenge Cup on Mar. 8-19 in Nepal.

“As much as we would love Rob and Chieffy to play (against Malaysia), we’re more worried of their fitness level for the Challenge Cup,” said Palami. “But I think we’ll stiill have a very good team against Malaysia.”

Gier and Caligdong, though, are still listed in the Phl XI’s 27-man lineup for the Malaysia friendly, according to the website http://www.azkalsfootballteam.com.

Also on the roster are Eduard Sacapano, Jason Sabio, Carli de Murga, Roel Gener, Roxy Dorlas, Ref Cuaresma, Lexton Moy, Juan Luis and Angel Guirado, Misagh Bahadoran, Phil and James Younghusband, Ian Araneta, Nate Burkey, Neil Etheridge, Ray Jonsson, Denis Wolf, Jason De Jong, Bervic Italia, Oj Clarino, Marwin Angeles, Joshua Beloya, Nestor Margarse, Ruben Doctora, and Paolo Pascual.

AFC Futsal - Thailand 17-2 Philippines !!

Bangkok: Thailand took a step closer to the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship with an emphatic 17-2 victory over the Philippines which saw the ASEAN Zone qualification hosts book their place in the semi-finals of the qualifiers alongside Indonesia.

Edward Mallari gave the Philippines a shock 5th minute lead at the Krungthep Thonburi Indoor Stadium but it only delayed the inevitable as the Thais took firm control of the Group B fixture.

Thailand skipper Kritsada Wongkaeo led the onslaught with six goals (11th, 19th, 28th, 28th 29th and 29th) to take his personal tally to nine in two games while Suphawat Thueanklang followed up his four goal haul in the 13-0 win over Myanmar with a three minute, first-half hat-trick (13th 14th and 16th).

Jetsada Chudech also weighed in with a treble (9th, 16th and 36th) while two goals each were scored by Nattavut Madyalan (7th and 16th) and Apiwat Chaemcharoen (15th and 31st).

Piyapan Ratana was also on target for Thailand, scoring in the 33rd minute, while Rowel Abello accounted for the Philippines other goal, which came in the 27th minute.

Thailand's victory and Indonesia's 8-2 win over Myanmar in Wednesday's earlier fixture sets up a thrilling top-of-the-table clash on Thursday while the Philippines take on Myanmar in a battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

Defending champion Air Force Phoenix went on a goal-scoring spree in the second half as it downed Nomads Auction Manila, 3-0, to jump back into title contention in the First Division of the United Football League at the University of Makati field last night.

Playing minus inspirational leader Chieffy Caligdong due to injury, striker Ian Araneta stepped up a notch as he broke a scoreless deadlock with a pair of missile-like goals in a span of five minutes starting on the 55th, enough to send the Airmen to their second straight win.

Super-sub Randy Bela-Ong finished off the Nomads booters with an 82nd minute goal. Air Force Phoenix, also the reigning Cup champion, hiked its total to seven points.

Stallion Gilligan’s FC, Loyola Meralco Sparks, Global FC and LBC-backed Kaya pack the magic four ahead of Air Force Phoenix.

The effort marked the second time that Araneta, a member of the Azkals team like Caligdong, scored a pair of goals following a come-from-behind 2-1 triumph over Navy Red Juice last Feb. 4 also at UMak.

That puts Araneta in the circle of the league’s top goal scorers with a total of four goals, just a shadow behind Stallion’s Lee Joo Young of Korea and Loyola Meralco Sparks’ massively popular and talented brother tandem of Phil and James Younghusband.

Nomads fell to its second loss against a win and a pair of draws to fall down at joint sixth with Army Fritz & Macziol on five points apiece.

It didn’t help that Nomads played 10-man after Nicholas Hacker was sent off on the 75th minute for a red card.

In Division II action, Union Internacional Manila overpowered Forza FC, 4-1, to join its recent victim along with Agila FC and Laos FC in a logjam at fourth spot with nine points each behind pacesetter Pachanga FC, No. 2 Diliman Victory Liner FC and No. 3 Team Socceroo FC.

Peter Amores opened up the scoring with a goal just a minute before the first half ended and then Bibi Pascual (68th), Shaheen Ahmad (76th) and Mohamed Ibraham (88th) joined the offensive to snare the win.

Forza’s only goal was provided by William Pajibo very late in the game when the outcome of the match was already decided.

In the night cap, Loyola Meralco Sparks recorded the biggest victory in the first division as it annihilated a listless Navy Red Juice, 14-0, with Phil Younghusband leading the carnage with a league-high five goals that seized it the solo lead.

Completing the scoring rampage were three goals each from James Younghusband and Mark Hartmann, two by Jake Morallo and one by Alex Camara as the Sparks improved to a league best 15 points.

Scoreless draw sends UST XI to UAAP finals

University of Santo Tomas battled Far Eastern to a scoreless draw yesterday at the end of the UAAP Season 74 men’s football eliminations at the Ateneo High School field – a result that was sufficient to send the Tigers to another championship showdown with holder University of the Philippines.

The Tigers wound up with four wins, four draws and two losses for 16 points, enough to nose out the Tams (15 points on 4-3-3) from the title picture and challenge No. 1 State U (20 points on 5-5-0).

“We played defensively and at the same time, we went on counter-attack. Good thing, our defense held up and FEU didn’t connect on their attacks, especially in the first half,” UST coach Marjo Allado, who led the Tigers to their third straight finals appearance, said.

With a virtual lock on top seeding and twice-to-beat advantage in the finals, the Maroons settled for a 1-1 stalemate with University of the East at the close of the two-round elims.

After conceding a goal for the first time in the tourney to UE’s Fitch Arboleda, UP salvaged an unbeaten season via Jinggoy Valmayor’s connection at the 89th minute, his fourth for the season.

In the other men’s match, Ateneo banked on Anton Amistoso’s 71st-minute strike to thwart rival La Salle, 1-0. As a result, the Archers wound up fourth overall with 13 points (3-4-3) while the Blue Eagles finished fifth with nine points (3-0-7). The Red Warriors were sixth with seven points (1-4-5).

In the distaff side, the UST Tigresses nipped the UP Lady Maroons, 2-1, while the DLSU Lady Archers trounced AdMU Lady Eagles via the same score to share the lead with 12 points (3-3-1).

The Lady Maroons, who were gunning for a finals berth with a win, got stuck with 11 points (3-2-3).

Citing family concerns, former Cebu-based Australian Graeme Mackinnon resigns from Global FC

By Mike T. Limpag

Sunday, February 19, 2012

A DAY after a stunning win over undefeated Stallion Gilligan’s in the United Football League, Dan Palami and Global FC will have to deal with another surprise.

An even bigger one—the loss of their coach, the former Cebu-based Australian Graeme Mackinnon.

“I’ve resigned from Global,” Mackinnon simply said when he met with Sun.Star Cebu to talk about the matter.

Citing family concerns, the 65-year-old coach who took Global FC to the semifinals of the UFL Cup and to second place after six games in the league, said he’s told Palami about his plan weeks ago.

“I’ve lost the fire in me,” Mackinnon said. “Sendong really affected me. It really hit home with the fragility of things and I came to the realization that I have neglected my family for so long and it’s time to return to my family again. It’s time to go home and fall in love with my wife all over again.”

Mackinnon also played a role in organizing the match between the Azkals and CF Madrid, which raised funds for the victims of Typhoon Sendong.

Global FC was not the first coaching stint of Mackinnon and he also missed most of the childhood of his daughter when he was based in Cebu from the late 80s until 2003, when he returned to Australia.

“The difference between then and now is because of the technology. Back then we just wrote letters, now I get to see them every week online,” said Mackinnon, who added he wants to see more and take care of his granddaughter Isabelle. “I’m 65, you never know how many sunsets you’ll see.”

For his part, Palami said he is sorry to see the coach leave and was even hoping that he would change his mind. Mackinnon first told Palami of his plan before the team manager left with the Azkals for their training camp in Dubai.

“There’s too much respect between us that goes beyond football. I would always support him and I don’t want football to stand in the way of his being happy,” said Palami.

Palami said he was more than satisfied with how Mackinnon handled Global in his brief stint in the UFL.

“I give him an A plus. I’ve seen his dedication to the job, I’ve seen how he handles the player and that is talking from the point of view of an owner of the club, and not just a friend,” said Palami.

Mackinnon said he doesn’t have a written contract with Palami.

“My contract was ‘I will leave if I get sick of it or if he (Dan) gets sick of me.’

I’ve been really lucky twice in football. First with Michel (Lhuillier) and now with Dan. There’s more than the employer-employee relationship and it’s more like I’m part of the family,” said Mackinnon, who first met Dan during the Feb. 9 match between the Philippines and Mongolia.

Palami said he and his former coach will maintain their friendship and he has even invited Mackinnon and his wife Tessie to return to the Philippines for his brother’s wedding this summer.

Since Global will have a short break, Palami said he will use the time to find a coach that would “approximate what Graeme has done.”

Mackinnon said he hopes the senior players in the team like Yu Hoshide and team captain Badrelin Elhabbib will take over a bigger leadership role now that the team currently has no coach.

The Australian coach, who is set to leave for Brunei to represent Palami in the Bolkiah Cup, said he feels happy and lucky to be part of the recent football
renaissance in the country.

“Back then, we had more dogs than people in the stand. Now, there’s so much passion, crowd participation and involvement. I’m disappointed that it didn’t work out,” said Mackinnon, who admitted he never really got settled in Manila.

“Everything was done to make me settled in, it’s just that there are overriding family ties,” he said. “I’m happy for the experience.”

Newly-formed team of veterans tops Thirsty Cup for second men’s open title in Cebu

By Marian C. Baring

Sunday, February 19, 2012

KTEK Trading may be a new team, but it is a team to be reckoned with as it grabbed its second title for the year, winning the men’s open division of the Thirsty Cup yesterday at the University of San Carlos Football Field.

Powered by former members of the national squad, the team defeated San Roque Nawanao, 2-0, in a penalty shootout, to win the title--the team’s second this year after the Sinulog Cup.

The game ended in a scoreless draw in regulation, forcing the shootout. Jake Acre and Peter Martin Dionela sank their shots, while goalie Henderson Jay Campo stopped one shot from San Roque with the other hitting the post.

Campo was later named the Most Valuable Player for the men’s open.

Team captain Frederick Alazas said they are slowly trying to build up a strong team. Alazas played for last year’s champion Queen City United.

“We are a group of friends who formed a team to join these competitions and we hope to continue playing,” said Alazas, a former Under-20 team member.

Alazas said that despite practicing just twice a week to prepare for Thirsty, they still finished with a good result. He added that they will be doubling their efforts for the CAFC 12th Inter-Club tournament in May.

Most of the members of the team are also part of the Hiroshi squad that was banned a few years ago for getting into a fight. Yesterday, a short commotion ensued during their quarterfinals against the University of San Carlos.

Alazas said they complained about the official who was undecided about a crucial call.

“He made a call that he wasn’t even sure about and it was a very crucial part of the match. And he could no longer take it back because he already made a call,” said Alazas.

Organizer Neil Montesclaros said that the referees did a good job and complaints like these happen every day.

Meanwhile, Montesclaros and Chad Songalia said they stood firm in their decision to strip Chicos FC of the women’s open title for failing to declare in their official lineup the name of one player, Jessah Sumagpao, who later became the MVP.

The team, through a letter from Nenette Espiritu Lanza, said they expected a deliberation to be made but were surprised to find out that the organizers’ decision was final.

“This is a festival-type tournament and we make decisions on the spot. We never said they cheated. It was an honest mistake on their part. We just have to decide on it based on our ground rules. It was a lapse on their part and we even found out about it by chance,” said Songalia.

Chicos failed to place Sumagpao’s name in the lineup. After the tournament, the team suggested to give the MVP trophy to Sumagpao. It was only then when the organizers discovered the discrepancy.

“We know that there was no intention to cheat, it was a matter of technicality,” said Montesclaros.

Because of this, Chicos, a team from Cagayan de Oro and Iloilo, was stripped of the title and it was given to runner-up San Roque FC.

Davao Football - Metro TMS booters overpower Eden FC

By Ruji Peter S. Abat

Sunday, February 19, 2012

DEFENDING champion Metro TMS and the Aquino Coliseum-Kilusang Magkaibigan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (KMMPC) kept their unblemished record intact after edging their respective opponents in the Davao Football Association (DFA) Men’s 2nd Division league at the Tionko field Sunday.

Metro TMS thrashed the Eden FC, 9-0, for its third consecutive win.

Eric Salubides spearheaded the Metro TMS attack with a hat trick, scoring in the 27th, 51st and 89th minutes while teammates Jorge Valenzona (5th, 48th) and Eric Sedighfor (32nd, 55th) netted two goals each. Kim Panguiton and John Conde also chipped in one goal each at the 60th and 62nd minutes, respectively.

KMMPC, meanwhile, hacked a 5-1 victory over the Solido Youth FC to improve its perfect win-loss record to 3-0.

Iko Villano led the way for KMMPC with two goals. Jamil Mangampo, Renee Valdesco and Gerard Bermeza contributed one goal each for KMMPC.

Enzo Magno of Solido Youth FC netted a goal at the 36th minute in a losing campaign.

The Solido Fil-Chi United finally barges into the win-column after defeating the Intangibles FC, 2-1.

Jay Miguel propelled Solido FC to its first victory after netting two goals.

M7 United also got the share of the limelight after beating Instatech, 4-3, behind the goals of Peter Pardo and Oliver Elcid.

Metro TMS and KMMPC sit atop the standings with identical win-loss records of 3-0. M7 United is at third spot with a 2-1 record. Solido Youth FC, Solido Fil-Chi United, Intangible FC and Instatech, meanwhile, are tied at 1-2 apiece.

Azkals mentor asserts AFC Cup preparations on track

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Philippine Azkals coach Michael Weiss believes preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup are on track following what he described as a successful camp in the Middle East.
“It’s mission more than accomplished,” Weiss said Sunday a day after the Azkals returned from Dubai.
The Azkals won one match against Qatar club Al Ahli and lost two to Australia’s Under-23 Olympic side as well as Uzbekistan in the camp.
“The camp was very, very good,” the German mentor said. “We put the base to a very successful campaign in Katmandu.”
Weiss revealed that their Challenge Cup foes India and Tajikistan have also stepped up their preparations.
India will play Oman and Azerbaijian in exhibition matches in Dubai late this month, while Tajikistan is slated to undergo training camp in Turkey.
For team manager Dan Palami, getting the best available side for the Challenge Cup remains the biggest challenge.
Palami noted that the arrival of Ray Jonsson in the last two matches greatly improved the Philippine side.
“When Ray arrived, everyone got to play in the right positions,” Palami said.
“I know if all the players we want are able to come for the Challenge Cup, the chances of a good result is multiplied,” Palami said. “I hope as we prepare for the ACC, the core of the team that trained in Gulf region improved.”

Global FC shuts down Gilligan's

By Joey Villar

MANILA, Philippines - Global FC neutralized Stallion Gilligan’s attacking game and eked out a 1-0 victory to get into title contention in the First Division of the United Football League at the University of Makati field.

Izzeldin Elhabbib provided the lone goal of the match on the 57th minute as the Global booters notched their fourth win to gain a share of second place with the Loyola Meralco Sparks with 12 points apiece.

Stallion suffered its first loss after four wins and a draw for 13 points, opening the door for Loyola, which can seize the solo lead with a win over Navy Red Juice at 6 p.m. tonight also at UMak.

Kaya FC joined Loyola and Global at No. 2 after it overpowered Pasargad FC, 3-0, earlier.

After a scoreless battle in the first half, Ivory Coast’s Eric Dagroh came through with one to shatter the deadlock and Prince Mark Boley and Fil-Am Nate Burkey, a member of the Azkals team, then followed it up with goals on the 61st and 83rd minute, respectively, to put the match out of reach. Pasargad fell to its third loss against two draws for two points.

In Second Division action, Cebu Queen City United defeated Dolphins United FC, 5-1, and Agila FC downed Laos FC, 3-1, to enhance their respective bids.

Limpag: Now that’s the way to play!

By Mike T. Limpag

Fair Play

Friday, February 17, 2012

I’M just going to say flat out that what Kaya FC owner Santi Araneta tweeted—when he realized Joshua Beloya wasn’t part of the starting lineup--was wrong.

Santi wears two hats, one as head of the Football Alliance and one as head of Kaya FC, and as the team owner, I think he was just looking out for the welfare of his player.

As team owner, it was an admirable move that would endear him to his players—the boss is willing to risk the wrath of fans for us—but as head of the Football Alliance, it may have been a tad tactless.

But we now live in a football environment when what everything the coach does, or doesn’t do, gets examined and analyzed and I’m fine with that.

Though I may throw a sound bite here and there regarding substitutions, I don’t when it comes to the starting lineup. It’s the coach’s call and saying who should be there puts undue pressure to whoever was inserted and who wasn’t inserted.

Unless, of course, it so questionable a move like putting in Rafael Garcia for his cousin Angel Guirado. Putting in Misagh Bahadoran and Ian Araneta for the missing Phil and James Younghusband for me was as fine a move as putting in Joshua Beloya or Ruben Doctora Jr. or whoever else.

And I pretty much agree when Coach Weiss said in the post-match interview, “the ones who played today deserved their chance.” (I got a copy of the recorded interview thanks to my former boss Jobannie Tabada, who is now in Dubai.)

Yes, though he’s gotten a lot of flak lately, Ian Araneta deserves a chance to prove himself. He didn’t perform but at least as a member of the team who stuck it out during the lean years, he got his chance. I’m glad, too, that coach Weiss thought of giving him that chance.

Anyway, while Sir Santi may have criticized the non-inclusion of the Kaya players, like us, he was all praises for the team for that second half showing.

Because with the way the team played in the second half, my confidence level going into the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup—where we are taking on two former champions and the reigning champion—just shot up a couple of levels, or even more.

And this was a team that didn’t have the Younghusband brothers, Chieffy Caligdong and Ali Borromeo!

And Juan Luis Guirado? Man, was he something. I was particularly impressed with his move in the second half, when he threw his body in front of the Australian striker who was about to take a shot.

Though he didn’t block the shot, the fact that he was risking it all, in a friendly to boot, shows the dedication of this guy. Heck, it reminded me of John Terry doing the same thing for England in the 2010 World Cup against Germany.

And criticized by even the Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta for putting in Lexton Moy in injury time against the Uzbekistan Under 23, Coach Weiss made all the right moves in the second half. (And yes, based on the interview, I think Coach Weiss really does pay attention to comments in Facebook and Twitter. That’s something, isn’t it?)

Doctora showed what he is capable and Joshua Beloya? I think that move of his explains why Sir Santi went ballistic. He missed, yes, but he showed us what he can do for the senior team with even just half a chance. The two, and I think most of the new guys who played, showed coach Weiss he’s got more options now on the bench.

It was a different team in the second half against Australia. In the first half, it seemed, the Olyroos were trying to redesign the ball, what with all the time they spent with it.

But in the second half? The Azkals brought the fight to them and then some. Marwin Angeles played superbly again, and I’m pretty sure not a few UFL coach are thinking of getting him for the first division.

Yep, we did fine against Australia and Coach Weiss, I think, scored one against his critics.

Good job guys. That’s the way to play!
