It was a fitting ending to a year-long quest for leadership as the Ceres Liner squad prevailed over defending champion Dynamic Builder, 2-1, in the final match yesterday of the 2011 Yanson Group of Bus Companies 9-A-Side 3rd Conference-North Football League at the YGBC pitch in Ayala North Point, Talisay City.
A 5th minute goal from Dynamic’s Eliseo Palomo put the defending champs within reach of a back-to-back title but the Ceres team coach Norman Fegidero kept their composure and stuck their gameplan.
Putting up a defensive stance and bidding their time to score the equalizer, Ceres got the break in 40th minute as Jason Panhay got away to tie the score, 1-all, at halftime.
With momentum on their side as play resumed in the second half, Ceres got another lucky break with Panhay booting in the team’s second goal in the 58th minute.
The Ceres’ victory broke the winning streak of Dynamic and foiled the latter’s grand slam bid in the tournament, and earned a Most Valuable Player award for Panhay.
Other individual awardees were Nyan Brean Jardio of Minulu-an-Talisay Football Club as most improved player, Michael Casas (Ceres Liner) best goalkeeper, Jason Cordova (Dynamic Builder) best defender, Rolando Ian Treyes (Dynamic Builder) best midfielder, Ali Go (Dynamic builder) as best striker. Las Buenas Football Club received the Fair Play Award.
Meanwhile, Minulu-an-Talisay defeated Trimaxi-Agro, 3-0, in the battle for third place. Tournament manager Ramon Janeo said the tournament will resume next month for the 2012 season of the YGBC 9-A-Side Football Tournament.*NAB
