MANILA, Philippines – Joshua Beloya's goalscoring heroics in the dying minutes of the Philippines' match against Laos saw the Philippine U-23 football XI earn their first win in the ongoing 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.
The Azkals seemed headed for defeat but Beloya scored back-to-back goals to silence their opponents.
The Philippines took the early lead through Manny Ott, who scored a goal in the 7th minute.
However, Laos’ Lamnao equalized the game with a goal of his own in the 38th minute.
Lamnao later struck again to extend Laos' lead in the 46th minute.
However, Beloya caught fire late in the game and score a stunning brace.
Beloya's first goal came in at the 90th minute following a defense-splitting pass from Mark Hartmann.
Beyola was not yet done. Showing superb control and touch, he fended off a defender and fired past the Laos goalkeeper in the 93rd minute.
It was the Philippines' first win since losing to Vietnam and Timor Leste in the ongoing competition.

credit should also go to manny ott and mark hartman for their good passing which led eventually to beloya's easy first goal. the second goal also came from a well-time long ball from somebody. football is teamwork and a goal usually comes from a good build-up. a writer should not make it appear that it came from one person's heroics. this is not basketball. nothing against beloya though.. he scored as expected of a good forward.
ReplyDeleteobviously this isn't basketball, but it doesn't mean that individual brilliance can't be considered as heroics, not just with regards to this match but in football in general. plus, basketball is a team sport as well. lol!
ReplyDeleteCredit to the team for fighting through despite 2 straight losses. Also credit to beloya for finishing and register a win. This team can now build on this as this team never really played together before this tourney. If this team stays together like what the core of our s senior did did, they will learn to play withe each other and would be a force in Asian football someday. Hoping.
ReplyDeletehow about the critics? any credit?...sometimes it helps the team to realize their shortcomings and adjust or maybe think of another options for the team to win...well,just asking... :)
ReplyDeleteall beloya's goals came from mark hartmann assists! :) the 1st goal started from porteria's easy, defense-splitting pass. the second eased out from van boesche's right back clearance. never seen Mk hartmann play like that as a team, and never i expected he could deliver crucial assists. keep it up! hope the U23 improves in the last 2 games.
ReplyDeleteMark Hartman was always a good passer. Remember the the two goals of chieffy during the Long Teng Cup and the two exhibition games between the Akals vs Kaya and Global where he made a couple of good assist to Phil?
ReplyDeleteI think he just need to be more aggressive and add more speed and power.
Credit also OJ Porteria, Christaens and the rest of the team because they didn't surrender even though they were trailing and a man down.
