MANILA, Philippines - Three Azkals based abroad have already committed to play for the Philippine football team’s Dec. 3 exhibition match against David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Fil-British Chris Greatwich, who has been unable to join the Azkals in their sorties this year, announced his return yesterday via Twitter, as did Fil-British Rob Gier and Fil-Icelandic Ray Jonsson.
News of the trio’s comeback came about just as ticket prices for the high-profile match featuring British icon Beckham, American star Landon Donovan, and Irish striker Robbie Keane were made public.
To get the best seats in the house, fans must shell out P15,000 while the most affordable seats will be at P2,000. The rest of the tickets will be sold for P12,500, P10,500, P9,500, and P5,000.
Now coaching full-time in New Jersey, Greatwich said: “Flight booked for the LA Galaxy game vs Azkals. Can’t wait to get back.”
Greatwich played a key part in the Azkals’ star-making performance in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup. A last-minute addition, he knocked in the equalizer on injury time to force a 1-1 draw with Singapore. He then scored a goal and an assist in a 2-0 upset over Vietnam as Phl reached the semis for the first time.
“He’s a great influence to the team. He came back against Vietnam (last year) and yet he made a big difference for us,” James Younghusband said of Greatwich.
Defenders Gier and Jonsson, who were part of the Azkals side that beat Nepal in a friendly at Rizal, 4-0, will suit up anew.
“Papa Gier and Old Man Ray Jonsson will be arriving in Manila for the Galaxy game on the 30th Nov! Good times,” twitted Gier, also the team’s scout.
