CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Next to the Azkals phenomenon, the United Football League is the second best thing to happen to Philippine football.
Then put the Azkals, the UFL plus a taste of showbiz and add AKTV of TV 5 in one bowl and you get a concoction of a football dream. A dream that all of us football fans want to wake up from our long time slumber.
That awakening will start on Saturday (October 8, 2011) at the Rizal Memorial stadium and the University of Makati football pitches in Manila when the UFL Cup competitions kick off with two interesting matches.
Global FC which is reportedly sponsored by San Miguel Corp. will clash with Stallions in the opening match at the Rizal Memorial stadium in Manila at 4 p.m. while the comebacking Kaya FC will pit skills with Laguna based Schwarz FC.
This year's UFL Cup competition is the biggest so far for the Football Alliance, the chief organizer of the UFL. A total of 28 teams divided into seven groups of four will compete for the right to join the UFL league competition which is slated after the Cup matches finish.
This is the first time that lots of Philippine football fans have been interested in the UFL since the league was formed in 2009 by businessmen and football addicts Christopher Hagedorn and Santi Araneta.
What made this year's competition very interesting are the presence of the Azkals distributed to the different ball clubs, the additions of out of town teams like Schwarz FC of Laguna, Queen City United of Cebu, and Baguio United and the multi-million peso coverage of the AKTV of TV 5.
