Tweet TAIPEI, Taiwan (UPDATED) - The Philippine Azkals settled for a 3-3 draw with Hong Kong in their opening match in the Long Teng Cup.
Hong Kong stormed ahead early through goals from Lee Wai Lim and Cheng Lai Hin.
The Azkals fought back, with Phil Younghusband converting a penalty to make it 1-2.
Chieffy Caligdong struck the equalizer in the 44th minute.
The Azkals took the lead again through a Caligdong goal in the second half.
The Philippines continued their attacking runs but were the recipient of several contested offside calls.
Caligdong also limped off from the match because of a leg injury in second half.
The Azkals looked set to book an upset until Hong Kong made it 3-3 through a Au Yeung Yiu Chung goal off a rebound in a freekick.
The 2 sides were reduced to 10 men in the dying minutes of the match after Jason de Jong and So Loi Keung were given red cards for fouls.
The 2011 Long Teng Cup is taking place in Chinese Taipei.
ABS-CBN will air the game on delayed basis through Studio 23 at 9:30 p.m.
i voted for taiwan to win next match. bloody hell with an idiot like weiss its only a loss or a draw. fucking idiot thinks he make the national team play like barcelona. we should throw him away and recall simon mcmenemy.
ReplyDeletewith mcmenemy he had a lot of crappy players like gener, araneta, barsales yet he was able to win games were supposed to lose by 20 and draw against teams were expected to lose by 5 or more goals.
ReplyDeletewith weiss at the helm we have conceded a lot of goals. we dont have the players to play the way he wants, cant he use a different strategy that will suit the kind of players he has in the team right now?
tangina lalong dadami mga football bashers nyan na kukumpara na naman sa putris na dragon boat at smart galis.
and i voted for taiwan to win against us next match.
ReplyDeleteweiss - tabla talo!
Your so short sighted.
ReplyDeleteGetting a team to play with a more positive attitude rather than playing it safe takes lots of time. In fact its a long term thing and you have to start somewhere. It just happens that us trying to play more positively, more attacking, better tactical understanding, etc. has started with Weiss' reign. He's put a system in place and getting it to come to fruition takes time. You're gonna have to be patient and understanding and even more of a proper football fan to understand it. Hindi lang puro, "ay ganito lang player natin, lets play it safe." Nothing is gonna happen with our football if that's the case.
Nag ingay na naman ang expert. Bakit hindi mo sinali si Caligdong?
ReplyDeleteMcmenemy - defensive minded
Weiss - offensive minded
Parehong magaling. Palitan mo lng kaya, mas espert ka pa eh. lol
eh? titing malaki.
ReplyDeleteCge theclocksworks kaw na magcoach... Kala kung cno magsalita. Think before u click! Tangina mo... Im sure mataba ka lng kaya hindi mkapaglaro ng futbol kaya hangang salita wala nman binubuga. Such a crablet mind hahahahah
ReplyDeletepara naman tayong barca para mag attacking kaagad. pweh!
ReplyDeletebobo ka pala eh! nobody is saying that we have to attack as if we're Barca, Man. United or whatever top class team in Europe! Di ka talaga nagiisip. Just as the anonymous poster above said, think before you click!!
ReplyDeleteclox wag kang maniwala kay kiatkiat lol.
ReplyDeleteTo that ABS-CBN uneducated hack: 'cuffed' means 'stuffed' and 3-3 is a very respectable draw.
ReplyDeleteWhat's more disappointing is the 650 crowd.
Money should never again be wasted going to Taiwan.
@theclockwork
ReplyDeleteso you mean mcmenemy is better coz he lost to HK`s U23 last year, and weiss sucks donkeys ass coz he "only" managed to get a draw against HK`s mens national team? azkals were down by 2 goals and couldve won it after taking the lead. equalizer for the HK was a shame, but that happens all the time. btw, gener, araneta is still with the team, so, id say that weiss has some crappy players also. lol
but, you cant even compare weiss to mcnenemy when it comes to coaching skills. mcmenemy is riding the wave from the lucky strikes he got when he coached the azkals, and from the results he had, everyone thinks he is such a great coach, but fact is, that he isnt. its a real shame that he had a coaching gig in Vietnam, and now most likely in Indonesia. he isnt that talented, and shouldve stuck to being ASSISTANT coach at a non league club.
his 15 minutes of fame is long overdue.
Let's not forget, Hong Kong is the defending champion. They won it last year with their U23 squad, we were third. They brought their senior team this year. They rank higher than us and almost half our team are U23 players with little international exposure and experience. Just imagine if we had all our senior veterans available.
ReplyDeleteWe almost won the match despite going down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes. We should have won that match but that's football.
There's quite a lot of room for improvement, but considering the youth and relative lack of experience for a number of players, some of whom being "capped" for the first time, it was a pretty decent performance.
Going to Taiwan to participate in long Teng Cup is not for money but for the improvement of the team in international scene and also to improve our ranking in FIFA (FIFA already recognized the Long Teng CUp so yung point na ma-a accumulate dito ay makakatulong sa ranking ng pinas sa football)......
ReplyDeletethe 3-3 is a good result comparing that we lost last year to the U-23 team and now we faced the senior Hongkong team. And if you consider which players were missing like Schrock, Etheridge, Johnson, Mulders, Cagara, Lucena, Ott.....so there's a lot of more quality to come. Let's see how we do in the friendly matches....but still you have to consider then the travelling of the players who needs to attapt time difference etc.
ReplyDelete"What's more disappointing is the 650 crowd.

It was so sad to see all those people come in dressed up as empty seats.
This should be the last time the Azkals go to this tournament. We've outgrown this tournament. Host it in the Philippines or someplace else.
If anyone had the patience to work out how FIFA
ReplyDeleteawards points for winning the Long Ten Cup they'd
realise it's worth about +2 in the rankings.
Far better to stay at home with the coach and practise by watching videos of quality teams.
"This should be the last time the Azkals go to this tournament. We've outgrown this tournament. Host it in the Philippines or someplace else."
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of a bullshit ass comment is this? Outgrown the tournament?? lol!! Unless you're taking the piss which seems unlikely.
"What kind of a bullshit ass comment is this? Outgrown the tournament?? lol!! Unless you're taking the piss which seems unlikely. "
ReplyDeleteRemind me again what insightful arguments you have for the Azkals to attend this tournament next year? Because if you don't.... STFU!
Eat Shit and Die haters! Can we all get along and support our national squad.
ReplyDeleteAre we that big now that we have outgrown this tournament after just a year of success? LOL.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good place to introduce the will be core of the U23 team.
1 game. not a bad start. for sure they all done looking down on us now. recovering fm a 2-0 deficit, and bombursting through dirty tactics and bad calls? respect.
ReplyDelete"Remind me again what insightful arguments you have for the Azkals to attend this tournament next year? Because if you don't.... STFU!"
ReplyDeleteInsightful?!?! LOL!!!!! Right..... so making a comment that "we've outgrown this tournament" and that "this should be the last they join this tournament" is really insightful!! STFU you twat! Clearly you know jack shit and you just spout out crap as if you're a know it all and you know what's best for the team!! Piss off!!!
@clockworks. you look and sound like the Devil..full of hatred, very bitter. were you once a rejected footballer? if bashing the NT and the coach will make you feel better then go ahead!you should think before you talk but probably you dont have a filter in your brain. looking at the stuff that you said shows what kind of character you have. If you dont like how the team performs then don't watch them! You have nothing good to say anyway, keep bitching if you want especially if you think that's good for your soul. Go azkals!
ReplyDeleteThis idea that travelling abroad is necessary to make a better team is bollox. In the developed football world teams gain promotion by improving themselves individually first and the team second. They do this by travelling no further than the nearest training ground.
ReplyDelete"This idea that travelling abroad is necessary to make a better team is bollox. In the developed football world..."
ReplyDeleteFirst sentence is pretty much true. But then the beginning of that second sentence just says it all... very contradictory! The Philippines is not a developed country, let alone a developed footballing country! So traveling abroad every now and then is quite necessary!
OK... but remember developed footballing nations
ReplyDeletewere once undeveloped too and they certainly did not - could not - improve their skills by going abroad.
Ya well, different cases for different countries and different eras when these developed footballing nations were undeveloped compared to the Philippines' case.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should ask North Korea how they did it
ReplyDeletewithout any help from outside.
Just remove Guirado on the line up! He's a very lousy and lazy player wtf! What a kind of player he is.
