FOLLOWING a disappointing 6-0 loss to Iloilo City in the opening of the 1st Gov. Marañon National Selection Tournament the other day, the Cebu Elite 18-Under Girls squad redeemed itself yesterday with a 12-0 win over Zamboanga at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Cebu Football Association president Richard Montayre, who is acting as the team’s coach, believes the Cebu Elite squad lost its first match because of the players’ lack of chemistry.
“The team hasn’t gelled in the first game because they didn’t have tune-up games (in Cebu),” Montayre told Sun.Star Cebu.
The Cebu Elite was taking on home team Bacolod City at press time yesterday afternoon.
“It is important not to lose any more games. Because the top two teams will advance to the championship,” Montayre said.
The Cebuanos will face Dumaguete City in its last elimination match.
Montayre was forced to take the coaching job because of the lack of coaches in Cebu since the other coaches are already assigned to the different Cebu elite squads.
“All the coaches are already preoccupied. Others are having clinics. We have a lot of coaches but all of them aren’t available,” he said.
Montayre said he will be sending Cebuanos for a C-licensing coaching course in May in Dumaguete to increase the number of coaches in Cebu.
“We will send as many as we can. There is a maximum of 25 slots and we will be initially sending seven coaches. If there are still open slots, then we will send more,” he said.
The 1st Gov. Marañon National Selection Tournament serves as the selection process for the PHL 19-Under women’s team.
