FIL-GERMAN booter Patrick Herget is reportedly arriving in Manila today to attend next week’s tryout for the Philippine Azkals football tam.
The 18-year-old Herget, a fullback and rightwinger for German football club Viktoria Aschaffenburg in 6th Bundesliga, is one of five Fil-Germans, who responded to calls to join the tryouts in the Philippines.
The Fil-Germans learned of the tryouts when national team manager Dan Palami went to Frankfurt last week and met with officials of the Deutscher Futball-Bund, the governing body of the sport in Germany.
Philippine Football Federation officials also confirmed yesterday that Mark Drinkuth is coming back and will bring with him John Patrick Hindrichsen, Oliver Potlschke and Jason Sabio.
New coach Hans Michael Weiss is also expected to be in the country by Wednesday.
“Some of those who want to be with the Azkals are already here. The others are coming next week,” said Palami.
Sources said the PFF had contacted Herget to join the national 17-under team back when he was only 14 years old, but the Fil-German prospect reportedly declined.
Fil-Danish booters Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena and Fil-German Stephan Markus Schrock were assured of making it to the team given their experience in playing for their respective clubs in first and second division tournaments.
The three-day tryouts begin on Monday at the University of Makati grounds. Peter Atencio

Herget is not in the first team for 6th div team , he is playing for the u23 youth team. 18 y.o , is he really good enough for a starting eleven ?
ReplyDeleteNobody knows yet but we'll know at the TRY OUTS. DUH
ReplyDeleteIndeed on paper Herget is not impressive and I would hope that the Azkals are way beyond that level. Stranger things have happened.
ReplyDeleteHerget and Drinkuth arrived last Saturday. It seems that Mark has been checking out the Malls and the bars already acc. to his facebook account. I hope they can find at least 2 players that are good enough to start or be the first ones to call off the bench.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know if Chad Gould is coming? There has been no news from him whatsoever. We need another striker.
Hey jonny,
ReplyDeleteWhy not inform your fellow Norwegians(Kristoffer Eide, etc.) to tryout for the team. Diskerud was able to keep his dual citizenship so I don't see any reason why the others can't do the same.
I think they are considering Herget, Drinkuth and the other young Germans for the U-23 team to the SEA games as well as being looked at for the senior team.
ReplyDeleteLook guys
ReplyDeleteYou've got German money and a German coach for free. That means you're going to have German players whether you like it or not (and that includes an '18 year old fullback and rightwinger'- whatever the hell that means in English - who's a sub in the Bundesliga 6th Division = 10th Div Mindanao League.)
Unfortunately you'll have to live with this nonsense until you stop voting for people who keep ripping off the nation's cash.
Well, we're trying to develop football in the country. We've gotta take the risk with these foreign players. Their experience will be experience for our locals as well. And right, they're for free!
ReplyDeletecjeagle, ive been in touch with Kristoffer Eide. He is interested, but somewhat still skeptic to the whole thing. He would be indeed be a good player for the squad, specially since he is a striker and plays for one of the better 2nd div teams here in Norway.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonny. Tell him to read the Philippines section and the Diskerud thread on yanks abroad in Bigsoccer.com for an explanation on the citizenship issues. Tell him the team might be training in Germany in June prior to World Cup qualifiers and that the Germans are helping to train this team. Tell him if need be, I can get in contact with team management if he is interested. He or you can send me a Private message to Pelefan on Bigsoccer for the contact info and I will forward it to dan Palami
ReplyDeleteHello Cjeagle , I am not the anonymous who been in touch with Kristoffer Eide. We got other Norwegians replying :)
