MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is on a winning streak in the ongoing Castrol-World Cup Pilipinas (WCP), beating team in Group A of the inaugural tournament in Pasay City.
The RP Team saw off the US (9-0), Sudan (5-3) and India (5-0) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) Bulwagang Ipil-Ipil grounds.
The Philippines, represented by football club Sunken Garden United (SGU-FC), will again see action on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Ivory Coast, the only team it has yet to face in Group A.
Group B, meanwhile, is composed of Brazil, England, Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden.
A total of 9 matches are scheduled this Independence Day weekend, including a Celebrity Challenge.
On Saturday, Sweden and Brazil will tussle at 9 a.m., Portugal will face England at 2 p.m., and the US will tackle India at 4 p.m.
The Celebrity Challenge at 4 p.m. will feature personalities such as TJ Manotoc, Heber Bartolome, Chef Rob Pengson and Papadom of reggae band Tropical Depression.
Ivory Coast will play again on Sunday, this time against the US at 9 a.m. while Brazil will face the Netherlands in the morning as well.
The 4 p.m. matches are Sudan vs India and Portugal vs Sweden.
The WCP, which rides on the ongoing football fever in time for the FIFA World Cup 2010, plays every weekend. It kicked off last May 29 and will run until June 20.
The weekly event also offers free football clinics for children, beginners and enthusiasts. Entrance is free.
The tournament offers over P40,000 worth of prizes.
