AFC Cup - Bali United 5-2 Stallion Laguna

Goals from Andhika Wijaya, Mohammed Rashid, Elias Dolah and Eber Bessa earned Teco’s side a four-goal lead before Jayvee Kallukaran and Griffin McDaniels gave the visitors hope of a revival until Jefferson snuffed out that possibility four minutes from time.

Bali United now have seven points from five games with their final clash against second placed Terengganu, who they trail by two points, on December 13 remaining. The group winners are sure to progress while the runners-up could also take a spot in the next round.

The home side were in control throughout against a Laguna side that went into the game having already been eliminated, and Bali United set about asserting their dominance.

Moments after heading wide with Bali United’s first effort on goal, Ilija Spasojevic had another sight of goal in the 14th minute, turning on the edge of the area to fire off a shot that forced Hayeson Pepito into action as he dived to his right.

A minute later Pepito denied Irfan Jaya while the Laguna goalkeeper gathered Jajang Mulyana’s downward header at the second attempt soon after as the hosts pushed for a way through.
In the 23rd minute the breakthrough came, Andhika slotting his shot into the bottom corner across Pepito after Eber Bessa’s neat layoff played the overlapping full back into space.

Ten minutes later the home side doubled their lead with Rashid hitting an unstoppable strike from the edge of the penalty area after Pepito had parried Irfan’s initial attempt into the Palestinian midfielder’s path.

Irfan had the defence on the backfoot again in first half injury time as he powered towards goal but this time his low shot was comfortably collected by Pepito.

Six minutes into the second half Dolah scored the third from close range when Pepito was unable to hold on to Ardi Idris’ header while Eber Bessa claimed the fourth in the 65th minute when he curled his right foot shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Kallukaran struck from wide on the left with a shot that arced over Adilson Maringa in the 69th minute to pull one back for Laguna and he turned provider eight minutes later to set up McDaniels’ header.

But Jefferson raced through on goal as Laguna pushed forward in the 86th minute to put the result beyond doubt.

Round 2 - Group F: Philippines 1-1 Indonesia

The hosts controlled possession in the opening exchanges as they looked for an opening, but it was Indonesia who were looking more threatening on the counter.

After 15 minutes the first chance of the match fell to the Philippines’ Patrick Reichelt, who chased down a long ball played over the top of Indonesia’s defence. Rizky Ridho, trying to mark the forward, almost scored an own-goal by lifting the ball over his goalkeeper, only for the ball to land on the top of the net instead.

The pressure continued to mount from the Philippines. A driving run into the box from Shayne Pattynama saw his shot spilled by Ari, before Reichelt was fouled inside the box. However, the offside flag came to Indonesia’s rescue.

The hosts' dominance paid off after 24 minutes when Reichelt made one of his chances count. Played through on goal, his first time finish with his left foot found the bottom corner to put the Philippines 1-0 up.

Indonesia grew into the game after a slow start, but were restricted to long range efforts without testing the Philippines' Neil Ethridge once.

As the second half began, the visitors came out with a higher intensity. Saddil Ramdani sent out an early warning sign in the opening two minutes of the restart with a shot from the edge of the box. However, a series of corners were dealt with comfortably by the hosts.

ndonesia began to see more and more possession, although Philippines’ defence dealt with the continuous long balls the visitors persisted with.

However, with 20 minutes left, Indonesia drew level. A fantastic run from Ricky Kambuaya, beating three players, found Ramdani out wide who opened his body to curl in a stunning strike into the top corner.

The hosts began to fatigue as Indonesia looked to complete the turnaround. With less than five minutes on the clock, a quick free kick was taken but Ethridge was once again wise to the danger.

The hosts were to have one more chance of their own, as substitute Pochlo Bugas cut inside on the edge of the box, only for his left-footed strike to connect with the crossbar.

Next up, the Philippines face Iraq away from home in the new year, while Indonesia will host Vietnam in Group F.

Philippines 0-2 Vietnam

The Philippine Men’s National Team missed out on a chance to claim a maiden win in the FIFA World Cup 26/AFC Asian Cup 2027 Preliminary Joint Qualifiers Round 2 after yielding to Vietnam, 0-2, before a packed crowd at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Nguyen Van Toan and Nguyen Dinh Bach were on the mark for the Vietnamese, scoring in each side of the half to take the full three points.

Buoyed by the 10,327-strong fans at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, the Azkals hoped to spring a surprise early on as OJ Porteria’s first effort went straight to Dang Van Lam in the 10th minute. Patrick Reichelt followed it up with his volleyed chance that went right of the post.

Van Toan broke the deadlock in the 16th minute with a shot from the center of the box.

Despite the deficit, the Philippines tried to find the equalizer and came close from sending the pack crowd into frenzy with chances from Santiago Rublico and substitute Bienvenido Marañon in the second half.

The missed chances proved costly as Dinh Bach scored Vietnam’s second goal right before full-time.

The Philippines look to bounce back when they face Indonesia on Tuesday 21 November 2023 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
