Azkals skipper reinforces U-22 in breakthrough bid

By Olmin Leyba

MANILA, Philippines — Azkals skipper Stephan Schrock may reinforce the Philippine Under-22 team that’s gunning for breakthrough on home soil in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in November.
SEAG football competitions allow a maximum of two overaged players and the Fil-German dynamo has offered his services to the U-22 squad targetting its first-ever Final Four appearance.
“We’ll check who would complement the players who are there but ‘Schroecky’ has expressed his intention to be a part of that U-22 team as an overaged player,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami, who’s been tasked to prepare the team for the Nov. 26-Dec. 10 SEAG bootfest.
From the Azkals crew that battled China to a gutsy 0-0 draw in the Fifa World Cup and AFC Asian Cup Joint Qualifiers come three U-22 players in  Fil-Dutch Justin Baas, Fil-Scottish Yrick Gallantes, and Fil-Norwegian Edison Suerti, who are all expected to play big roles for Team Philippines.
“We have 30 players in the (U-22) pool now, including foreign-based and three players with the seniors team (Baas, Gallantes and Suerti),” said Palami.
The hosts’ road to SEAG relevance got a boost when they avoided landing in the Group of Death during the recent draw. The Filipinos got drawn with Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Timor Leste in Group A, leaving defending champion Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore and Brunei in a death battle in the other group.
“We’ve never reached the semifinal round so that’s the target right now. And I think the draw somehow gives us the chance,” said Palami.
“But we’re not being complacent, we’ll be preparing as hard and as well as the seniors team (Azkals). We’ve actually run a simultaneous camp with the Azkals and U-22 and we’ve got good results so far,” he added, particularly proud of U-22’s performance in a friendly against an all-African side in BiƱan recently.
Phl U-22, which has been training since July under Azkals coaches Goran Milojevic and Scott Cooper, is slated to play in the Philippine Football League’s Cup tournament.
“We’ll be competing in the Cup, that will be part of the preparations; by that time, we’ll have three or four games going to the SEA Games,” he said.

It’s no coincidence that we’ve gotten better—Azkals coach Cooper

By:  -

BACOLOD CITY—Philippines coach Scott Cooper’s voice reverberated inside the Azkals’ dugout just minutes before kickoff against China in their World Cup Qualifying match at Panaad Stadium here on Tuesday night.
“Don’t wait for another big team to come here and beat us,” Cooper told his team. “Let this be the moment.”

It wasn’t a win, but holding one of Asia’s top-ranked teams to a goalless draw surely felt like a victory.
In front of a crowd that was predominantly wearing the visiting team’s colors, the Azkals relied on a disciplined defensive display to end a 15-match losing streak against the Chinese, whom the Philippines last beat in 1919.
“What we’re doing is resetting the Azkals mind-set that this is not impossible, this is something that we should expect more and more going forward,” Cooper said.
“For me now, I’m going to make sure they’re not going to overenjoy a draw even though it’s [against] China.”
Still, this was by far the biggest result in recent memory for the Azkals as they proved equal to a squad that is ranked 59 places higher in the Fifa rankings at No. 68.
China has also beaten them three times in the last two years, including a 3-0 whipping in their maiden Asian Cup appearance last June.
Collectively, the Azkals showed they can play like one solid unit that can hold off even the most lethal of players in Chinese star striker Wu Lei and naturalized Brazilian Ai Kesen.
“We worked on a plan and put the effort in,” Cooper said. “We played 5-4-1 for real and not just playing deep and kicking the ball away but we turned it into moments where we could have scored.”
“If we play with focus and we played together as a team, we can achieve this kind of result,” Azkals manager Dan Palami said.

Veteran goalkeeper Neil Etheridge marked his return with a commanding performance in between the sticks, while captain Stephan Schrock led by example with a dynamic display at midfield.
“I think it wasn’t just myself, but everyone on the team did extremely well today,” said Etheridge, who came up with a fine reflex save on Hang Junmin’s shot in second half stoppage time to keep the game level.
“Some of the players looked up to me on how I was going to deal with situations. I’ve been very fortunate and blessed to play at the highest level in the world, so that helped,” Etheridge said.
With a win and a draw in their first three matches, the Philippines remained in third spot with four points, behind unbeaten Syria and China in Group A.
“It’s no coincidence that we’ve gotten better,” said Cooper, noting that the camp in China last June gave the squad a huge boost. “I have got unbridled optimism on our players and the squad.”
Etheridge shares Cooper’s sentiment. “We’ve got more to give,” he said.

Sad sight as China fans outnumber Azkals supporters in Bacolod game

by KARLO SACAMOS

But China beat the Philippines in one aspect during their Fifa World Cup qualifiers matchup on Tuesday night at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod: crowd support.

After all, the Filipino fans were outnumbered as 2,000 of the nearly 3,000 people who trooped to the almost 10,000-seat venue were Chinese, some even flying from Manila just to support the visiting team.

Expecting the Chinese fans to come in droves, the Philippine Football Federation increased ticket prices for the match. Selling for just P100, P300, P500 during an earlier World Cup qualifier against Syria held in the same football field last month, prices mostly quadrupled to P300, P500, P1,000, and P2,000, respectively, for the China game.

“Mas mataas than usual,” PFF president Nonong Araneta said the day after the match, referring to the ticket prices. “Of course, we want to take advantage din naman, kasi madaming gastos eh, and of the Chinese buying also.”

There was talk that Chinese fans could have filled the venue, yet the PFF only made 2,000 tickets available to the visiting team’s fans.
Despite the bulk of tickets made available to Azkals fans, their Chinese counterparts still made a bigger presence.
Araneta held on to the consolation that the crowd battle was far from hostile.
“It was healthy naman between the fans,” said the PFF chief, who’s running for one last term as the head of the country’s governing body for football. “No untoward incidents, so I’m happy. Wala namang problema sa Chinese crowd at wala din namang problema sa Filipino crowd.”
Still, the lack of Filipino crowd support is a concern, especially if you're outnumbered in your own turf - and in the country's football hotbed no less.
Ticket pricing isn't entirely the problem.

Philippines 0-0 China PR

In what could be the best result of 2019, the Philippine Men’s National Team put up a impressive defensive stand to draw China PR, 0-0 in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 / AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualifiers last night at Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium.

Goran Milojevic’s side leaned on goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who had a Man of the Match performance, as the Philippines claimed their most remarkable result against the side who had beaten them three straight times since 2017.
Dominating inside the penalty box for the entire match, the Cardiff City shot-stopper took care of the crosses by the visitors, but it needed a late save to deny the Chinese in the final minutes of the match to preserve the clean sheet.
Substitute Amani Aguinaldo also made himself big in complimenting Alvaro Silva after coming on for Justin Baas in the second half. The pair put the clamps on the attacking threat of Wu Lei and Ai Kesen to deny China PR the chance to top the group.
The draw means that the Philippines remained in third with four points in Group A. Their next matches of the qualifiers two away matches against Maldives on 14 November, and Syria on 19 November.

CERES-NEGROS CLINCHES PFL TITLE WITH COMEBACK WIN OVER ARCHERS

Ceres-Negros FC came from a goal down to score a 3-1 over Green Archers United and officially secured the PFL title last October 12 at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa, Batangas. Angelo Marasigan scored a goal while Bienvenido Maranon completed a brace.
The busmen went behind in the midway in the first half when John Celiz slotted in a free ball after a punch from Muller was not cleared by the defense.
The Negros squad pushed for an equalizer immediately but chances from Miguel Tanton, Maranon, and Robert Lopez Mendy were found begging.
Maranon had the best chance in the 34th minute after a Jeffrey Christiaens cutback allowed the Spaniard to shoot well but Henry Bandeken Fong did well to stop the attempt.
The Spanish striker had another good chance minutes later with a delivery from Tanton but he was denied by the crossbar. Super Herrera almost nicked one in injury time but his header to the ground bounced over the woodwork. The half would finish with Ceres-Negros trailing 0-1.
The defending champs came back with a vengeance just five minutes after the restart when a sublime long ball from Takashi Odawara was chased by Marasigan who controlled into the box and picked the top corner for the equalizer.
The Japanese midfielder almost put the busmen ahead in the 55th minute but Greggy Yang did well to clear the ball off the line. The Archers also had twin chances minutes later but Resty Gumban’s follow up went straight to Muller.
Chances from Maranon, Super, and Marasigan were threatening but they couldn’t seem to find the target thereafter. Both teams went toe-to-toe midway in the second half but incomplete deliveries from the Archers attack and heroics from Bandeken Fong kept the scoreline at 1-1.
The 80th saw a critical call Archers defender Ronie Aguisanda was judged for handball after coming in contact with a Ceres-Negros shot. Maranon stepped up on the plate to give the busmen the 2-1 advantage.
Tensions ensued the play when Gumban was sent off for touching the referee which left the Green and White squad to ten men. The Busmen got a third when Lopez Mendy connected with Maranon who made no mistake from ten yards to complete the scoring and the win for Ceres-Negros.
“We showed character today,” said Man of the Match Awardee Angelo Marasigan. “We knew it wasn’t gonna be an easy match. Our heads went down a little bit down for a few minutes but after that we regained confidence and we just took to the game plan and won the game. I’m proud of the team and I’m proud of everyone.” he added.
With the full three points in the bag, the busmen clinched their third straight Philippines Football League title with two games left to play. They will face Mendiola FC and Kaya FC on their final matches with the awarding set on their final match on the 19th in Lipa.

PFL - Kaya FC–Iloilo 5-1 Mendiola FC 1991

Kaya FC–Iloilo made sure there was no repeat of last week’s stalemate against Mendiola FC 1991, putting in an assured performance en route to a 5-1 victory at the Aboitiz Pitch on Wednesday. Jordan Mintah put in another outstanding shift for the hosts as he bagged four goals in the contest.
It took 15 minutes for Kaya to find the breakthrough. With a clever first touch, Shirmar Felongco cut inside from the right flank and fed Mintah, who was able to turn and fire into the net. He doubled the lead in similar fashion, but this time the assist came from the opposite flank through Jalsor Soriano.
Iloilo seemed set for smooth sailing but Ricardo Sendra pulled one back for the visitors with a low drive from the edge of the box. Mintah clipped the crossbar with a long range chip as Kaya pushed for a third, but the score remained at 2-1 when the half time whistle blew.
The Ghanaian forward, however, needed little time to pick up where he left off. Just seven minutes after the break, he rose highest to head in Jayson Panhay’s corner to complete his hat trick. Masanari Omura then headed in an almost identical Panhay corner to make it 4-1.
Kaya found a fifth goal roughly 10 minutes later. Substitute Yannick Tuason latched on to a ball over the top of the Mendiola defense and was brought down by the keeper. The resulting penalty was smashed in by Mintah to cap off the 5-1 victory.

Floodlights at Binan Football Stadium

By Ivan Saldajeno

BINAN--PFL teams have to deal with playing early kickoffs at the Binan Football Stadium, either in Stallion Laguna's home matches or in times the said club allows its foes to use the said venue for their matches, due to the venue's floodlights not cleared for usage.

Even no less than Risto Vidakovic, the coach of defending champion Ceres Negros, has been vocally airing his concerns about his club's road matches at Stallion Laguna being played at 3:30 p.m. especially that during that time, the temperature is hot when the weather is fine.

"It's very hard to play in this kind of weather conditions because the players cannot perform," Vidakovic said recently.

Also because of the floodlight issue, the PFL had no choice but to move the matches at the Binan Football Stadium at another date in case of adverse weather, like what happened in the scheduled Stallion Laguna-Air Force match on Wednesday.

However, this problem could come to an end real soon as no less than Vice Mayor Gel Alonte said that the floodlights at the said venue will finally be turned on by next week.

"This coming Tuesday," Alonte said specifically on Wednesday night after the league announced the postponement of the Stallion Laguna-Air Force game.

The first operation of the floodlights will come at a right timing as the national women's football team will be in town.

"Dito magpa-practice ang Philippine team starting Monday," Alonte continued.

The Binan Football Stadium will host the women's football competition of the Southeast Asian Games, and the full operation of the floodlights is a major step forward in its preparations for the said event, which will begin on Nov. 26, four days before the Nov. 30 formal start.

"Syempre, busy lahat kahit si Mayor (Arman Dimaguila), LGU, [at] yung mga partners namin para mag-prepare nga ating football field," Alonte shared how the gear-up has been so far. "Ngayon, focus muna kami sa pagaayos ng field para sa darating na SEA Games."

However, he is open to the idea of holding Stallion Laguna's home stand against Green Archers United next Wednesday at nighttime or when the floodlights are on.

"Alam naman ni Coach Ernie [Nierras]. Kasama siya sa team na magha-handle for the SEA Games dito sa Binan," Alonte quipped.

The said venue will also be the site of Stallion Laguna's match against Global Makati in the final day of the season on Oct. 19 with the latter as the designated host.

Aside from fully functioning the floodlights, the Binan City government is also adding some upgrades to the field's facilities.

Etheridge on target for Azkals return

By:

Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge is expected to make his return to the Philippine Azkals for the joint Fifa World Cup and AFC Asian Cup Qualifying clash with powerhouse China on Oct. 15 at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
Having recovered from a hamstring injury, the Cardiff City stopper will be back to man the posts for a Philippine side that currently sits third at the table after splitting its first two matches last month.

Aside from Etheridge, Azkals manager Dan Palami said 21-year-old defender Elias Mordal has also been given clearance to play for the team. Palami said they have also started processing the clearance of Michael Kempter to be eligible for the next window in November when the Azkals will have tricky away tests against Syria and the Maldives.
Adopted by Norwegian parents, Mordal, who already joined the Azkals’ camp in China in June, traces his roots to Cebu. His case follows a similar path of former Azkals defender Simone Rota, who was also adopted by Italian parents, but played for the Philippines until 2018.
“He (Mordal) definitely gives us added options in defense,” Palami said of Mordal, who plays for Norwegian side Brattvag.

Top guns
Meanwhile, China coach Marcello Lippi is bringing in his top guns for the duel against the Azkals, whom they have already defeated three times in the last three years. China will also face Guam in Guangzhou on Oct. 10, before flying to Bacolod.
Naturalized striker Elkeson, the first player without Chinese ancestry to suit up for the Asian heavyweight, has been named by Lippi to his squad that will be led by Espanyol winger Wu Lei.
Now named Ai Kesen, Elkesen, who qualified for naturalization by residency, scored twice in his debut in the 5-0 win over the Maldives last month in Male.
Wu, who scored twice against the Azkals in the Asian Cup, links up with his national team on the back of a packed schedule that includes club matches against CSKA Moscow in Europa League on Oct. 4 and Real Mallorca in La Liga on Oct. 6.
