AFC U16 - Philippines 3-2 Brunei Darussalam

Philippines came from behind to defeat Brunei Darussalam 3-2 to end their qualifying campaign on a high.
It was the Young Azkals' second win of the Qualifiers, having defeated Northern Mariana Islands (NMI) 7-0, as they finished in third place with six points. Brunei finished fourth, having beaten NMI for their only triumph of the campaign.
Both teams were aiming for a winning finish to their respective campaigns and defender Muhd Wafiq Danish gave Brunei Darussalam a dream start when he opened the scoring in the 15th minute.
Philippines, however, continued to press for the equaliser and finally drew level in the 55th minute with defender David Nicolo Pahud slotting home.
Three minutes later, Philippines were in the lead with forward Umi Martin Abelarde finding the back of the net.
Brunei Darussalam surged forward in search of the equaliser and were rewarded for their efforts with midfielder Syaherrul Affendy drawing them level in the 73rd minute.
Philippines, however, would have the final say with forward Uriel Dalapo scoring the winner in the 84th minute.

CERES-NEGROS BLANKS KAYA-ILOILO, 2-0

Ceres-Negros FC banked on a splendid first half to beat Kaya FC-Iloilo 2-0 last September 18 at the Binan Stadium. OJ Porteria and Mike Ott added one goal apiece in their third straight win against the second ranked squad.
Kaya had the earliest chance of the match with Eric Giganto in front of goal but the midfielder couldn’t find the target in the 3rd minute. Both teams figured in a tight midfield battle which resulted to half chances from Jordan Mintah and Super.
The opening goal came in the 15th minute when Ott smashed in the goal after a Porteria assist. Porteria worked his way into the box before he released to an unmarked Ott who made no mistake.
Mintah had a chance to equalize minutes later from on top of the box but his shot was a yard off. Sean Kane headed back a corner to Ott in the 27th but Ott’s left footer was well wide.
A long distance free kick from Stephan Schrock managed to bounce in front of goal but no one was there to connect.
It was in the half hour mark when Ceres-Negros doubled the lead when Porteria danced his way into the box before finishing in style into the far post to make ot 2-0.
Things got testy late in the half which led to a frustrated elbow by Mintah on Super. The Ceres-Negros defender was knocked unconscious and had a seizure afterwards while being treated. Mintah mean while fell slowly after in the contact.
Play was halted for a while with both players getting treatment while the Ceres bench was incensed with the non call of the intentional foul that was seen clearly from the stands.
Kaya FC tried to sub out Mintah who was on a stretcher and was announced on the PA system which further incensed a concussed Super who was in a neck brace on the bench.
Assistant Coach Ian Treyes was sent to the stands minutes later while referee Mick Pineda held the substitution of Mintah before giving him a red. Super Herrera was surprisingly given a red card which further incensed the injured defender.
With only ten men for both squads, the second half started slower than the first with the initial chance happening in the 52nd. Substitute Jovin Bedic got the ball inside the box but his touch failed him before he can threaten Muller.
Ceres-Negros went on a break on the 66th when Maranon laid off to Porteria but the midfielder’s final ball was found to be offside. Kaya was growing into the match but Ceres-Negros worked on the counter to keep the hosts in check.
Substitute Kenny Daniels sent a good ball forward in the 70th but Tacagni couldn’t connect. Maranon would get a shot minutes later but his sliced attempt still forced Casas to push the ball to safety.
The Busmen almost had their third when Schrock dispossessed his marker before he tee’d up Maranon whos shot was wide of the top corner.
Masa Omura would threaten in the 83rd with a header to Tuason but Muller came up quick to punch away the danger. Schrock found Lopez Mendy in the box minutes later but the ball was too high for the forward to redirect.
The Azkals captain had a good run in the box four minutes from time after he breezed past two defenders but his final shot was blocked inside the box.
Kaya had their final chance to get a goal back in injury time by Daniel’s free kick bounced off the wall and rolled towards Muller who covers the danger. The referee blew the final whistle which signaled the continuation of the busmen’s unbeaten streak in the league.
“Its a big win for us,”said Ceres-Negros Coach Risto Vidakovic. We beat our direct opponent for the title and its very very important but we need to continue as we have seven games more. We have to win four games to be sure that we are champions again.
“I want to congratulate my players,” added the Spanish-Serbian mentor. “They played really good today and they gave everything. We controlled the game from the first minute until the end.” Especially, it’s very hard for the players if you don’t have referees on the pitch. It’s very hard to play.”
Ceres-Negros extended their lead in the PFL table to nine points with seven games remaining. They will need to win four of their last seven games to secure their unprecedented third straight PFL title.

MARAΓ‘ON: WE ALWAYS LOOK GAME-BY-GAME

Bienvenido MaraΓ±on and Ceres-Negros FC are currently on top of the table but the hot shooting forward knows that in anything can happen if you don’t focus on the next match in the Philippines Football League.
“We always look game by game,” said the current PFL topscorer who will face the Philippine Air Force Saturday. “We are not preparing for the games one month ahead but we take it step-by-step.”
With Kaya trimming the lead during the international break to three points, MaraΓ±on knows that nothing short of a victory agaisnt the Airmen is needed to maintain the gap against the number two side.
“Now we have to beat Air Force because the last time was very difficult,” said the former Cadiz man was hit with plenty of bad challenges.
“I hope this time the referee stops the very bad tackles from them and then we will see how are the players after the match so we can move on to the next match,” MaraΓ±on added.
MaraΓ±on believes that the team can continue its unbeaten ways with the right mindset every game.
“If the team is focused up to now, there is no problem to beat everybody. We have to keep this mind and make a big effort game-by-game.”
Ceres-Negros battles Philippine Air Force on Saturday, September 14 in Lipa and will face Kaya in midweek action in BiΓ±an on Wednesday September 18.

Air Force romps Global Makati in lone PFL mideweek action

By Ivan Saldajeno

LIPA--Air Force scored its biggest win so far in its campaign in the PFL, romping Global Makati, 4-1, in the lone midweek action at the Aboitiz Pitch on Wednesday night.

Air Force broke the ice late in the first half to set up its breakaway from the lowly Global Makati side.

Jaylor Soriano scored the breakthrough goal for Air Force in the 43rd minute as the club entered halftime ahead, 1-0, instead of staying tied with Global Makati.

Vincent Braga then sparked Air Force's breakaway, starting with a 65th minute goal that made it 2-0, while Joel Bedia added another for Air Force three minutes later.

Chima Uzoka tried to keep Global Makati in the match with a goal in the 73rd minute, but Bedia put the exclamation point for Air Foce with an 88th minute goal for the final tally.

Air Force is now tied with Mendiola on points for fifth place with 11, although the latter owns the tiebreaker on a superior goal difference.

Global Makati, on the other hand, remains stuck at four points after 15 matches as the club was further buried at the bottom of the table.

Azkals cop 1st win over Guam in World Cup qualifiers

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals scored a breakthrough win, 4-1, over Guam in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on Tuesday, September 9, at the GFA Centre Lower Field in Dededo, Guam.
The Azkals bounced back from their opening game loss to Syria and are now third in the Group A standings with 3 points.
Angel Guirado opened the floodgates in the 6th minute after connecting a cross from captain Stephan Schrock, 1-0.
Guirado continued to work his magic as he was part of the buildup for Patrick Reichelt, who converted a through ball to double Philippines' lead in the 12th minute, 2-0.
In the second half, Guam responded more aggressivley, leading to a huge chance when a penalty was awarded after Azkals defender Carli de Murga brought down Travis Nicklaw inside the box.
In the 67th minute, Marcus Lopez converted from the spot to get within one, 1-2.
But the Azkals dashed away Guam's hopes immediately as Schrock netted his first goal of the World Cup qualifiers 4 minutes later.
Midfielder John Patrick Strauss further pulled away the lead with a clinical finish in the 81st minute that capped off the match.
The Philippine national men's football team will face China on Tuesday, October 15, at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Bacolod

Azkals look to rebound against Guam’s Matao

By:

DEDEDO, Guam—Philippine captain Stephan Schrock minced no words when asked about the significance of the Azkals’ World Cup Qualifying clash against Guam on Tuesday.
“It’s already a do-or-die match,” said Schrock, referring to the 3:30 p.m. match (1:30 p.m. in Manila) with the Matao at GFA National Training Center here.

“We’ve missed an opportunity in the last game and put ourselves under pressure and now we have to find a way to get out of this hole.”
Only two games into the qualifying campaign for football’s showpiece event in Qatar in 2022, the Azkals find themselves in a precarious spot of needing maximum points after dropping their Group A opener to Syria, 2-5, in Bacolod City last Thursday.

And for Schrock, the Azkals have no recourse but to come out sharper against the Matao, whose captain Jason Cunliffe is quite familiar with the Philippine team, having played for Pachanga Diliman in the now defunct United Football League.
“We can’t overlook Guam even with the ranking that they have now,” said Schrock, whose side is 64 places ahead of the 190th-ranked Matao in the Fifa rankings.
The Azkals, who arrived Saturday morning in this United States territory known for its postcard-pretty beaches, still have six more matches remaining following the Guam duel, but coach Scott Cooper said they can’t afford to drop more points with powerhouse China next for them on Oct. 15.
“Our target is to get the three points, regroup and plan ahead for the China match,” said Cooper, who hinted at handing youngsters Justin Baas and Yrik Gallantes their Azkals debuts for the match against Guam.
Maldives dealt Guam a narrow 1-0 defeat last Tuesday, but coach Danny McBreen believes his squad deserved more for their performance particularly in the second half.
“For us, it’s about constant revolution in improving the team,” said the Aussie, who once scored against Philippine club Global in an AFC Cup match four years ago while playing for Hong Kong side South China. “We’ll go out there with an attitude that we’re playing for the island [of Guam].”
Bracing for a strong Azkals performance, Cunliffe expects a bigger crowd to show up for the match with 25 percent of the 160,000 population of Guam having Filipino lineage.
