Cooper bares 23-man Azkals roster

By:

It’s a unique scenario, but coach Scott Cooper doesn’t see any problem with Serbian coach Goran Milosevic being named as head coach of the Philippines for the 2022 Fifa World Cup Qualifiers starting Thursday in Bacolod City.
Cooper, who took charge after the Azkals and Sven-Göran Eriksson parted ways following the AFC Asian Cup, clarified that he will remain as the top tactician for the squad that kicks off its qualifying campaign against Syria at Panaad Stadium.

“It is what it is,” Cooper told the Inquirer. “Goran Milosevic has been named head coach because he has a UEFA Pro License, which is something I don’t have at the moment.”
Despite his impressive credentials that has seen him win a Thai Premier League title, Thai League Cup and Thai FA Cup with Buriram, Cooper’s coaching badges aren’t enough to make the grade for AFC standards.
Cooper unveiled his 23-man squad for the Syria match with captain Stephan Schrock of Philippines Football League champion Ceres-Negros headlining the lineup.
Players who saw action in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates early this year form the majority of the squad, which include Javier Patiño, Patrick Reichelt, Daisuke Sato, Amani Aguinaldo, Alvaro Silva, Manny Ott, Mike Ott, Patrick Strauss, Kevin Ingreso, Mike Ott, Carlie De Murga, Michael Falkesgaard and Kevin Hansen.
Putting emphasis on the players’ current form, Cooper also recalled several standouts who were left out in the past few tournaments and training camps.
Defender Martin Steuble, who missed out on a spot in the Asian Cup but has made an impact for Port FC in the Thai Premier League, earned another selection. Thailand-based Mark Hartmann, Marco Casambre and Angel Guirado were also recalled, along with Ceres players Sean Kane and OJ Porteria.
Goalkeeper Patrick Deyto, who has impressed at Suphanburi even after a hand surgery sidelined him early this year, is also back in the squad.
Out due to injury in the two previous camps in Thailand and China, Manny Ott also made the grade.
But the most intriguing names in the list are teenagers Justin Baas and Yrik Galantes, who are based in the Netherlands and Scotland, respectively.
Baas is a 19-year-old centerback currently attached with AZ Alkmaar’s Under-21 side, while Galantes is a promising attacking midfielder loaned by Scottish side Hibernian to Gala Fairydean Rovers.

CERES-NEGROS DRUBS GLOBAL CEBU 13-0

Defending champions Ceres-Negros FC romped to a 13-0 victory over Global Cebu last August 28 at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa Batangas. Bienvenido Maranon topscored with four goals, followed by hat tricks from Mike Ott and Robert Lopez Mendy, and goals from Stephan Schrock, Takashi Odawara, and James Younghusband.
The hosts had the first crack on goal when Paolo Salenga picked up a deflected header inside the box forcing Roland Muller to make a fine stop in the 5th minute. Schrock had first dibs for Ceres-Negros just a minute later but his long distance effort was saved by Jun Tripulca.
Salenga was at it again minutes later after connecting with a long distance free kick but the ball went wide. Schrock would later on send a dangerous long ball in the box but was saved by the keeper.
It was in the 20th minute when the ice was broken after a ball intended for Lopez Mendy skipped past to Maranon in the far post for the easy opening goal. Lopez Mendy and OJ Porteria had good chances in front but their shots were off target.
Stephan Schrock made it two after five minutes when he redirected an Ott cross to the top corner. Global Cebu picked up defensively after the concessions with blocks of Ceres-Negros’ attacks.
Ceres-Negros found the thirs after Lopez Mendy drove in a cross from Dylan De Bruycker. Ott joined the scoring in the 40th minute after he waltzed into the box after a Schrock through ball before he placed it to the inside of the post and in.
Global almost had theor own in the 42nd with Salenga but his well worked shot went straight to Muller. A brillian team press saw Mike Ott score his second after an assist from Mendy was initiated by the fine play of Maranon and company on the press on the 45th minute.
The busmen continued their fine play in the second half after Takashi Odawara headed in a pinpoint corner kick from Stephan Schrock to make it six.
Substitute Jorrel Aristorenas forced Muller to a punch while a give-and-go between Lopez Mendy and Schrock forced Tripulca into a full stretch in the 53rd minute.
OJ Porteria’s cross bounced off Ott and rolled towards an open Lopez Mendy who tapped in his second. Maranon would also complete his brace in the 59th after a header inside the box.
Mike Ott was in the right place at the right time in the 65th when Porteria’s attempt bounced off the face of the post and towards Ott who slammed in his hat trick. He almost made it four moments later but his attempt from inside the box was wide.
Consecutive goals from the Busmen came in the 80th minute after Lopez Mendy headed in a hat trick and assisted Maranon for his own sombrero moments later.
Lopez Mendy added another assist in the bag after releasing substitute James Younghusband on the second post. Younghusband, who almost lost the ball, recovered well in the goal line before crossing the ball for his debut Ceres goal.
Maranon stepped up for a penalty, after being fouled in the box, and scored his fourth goal to score his 23rd goal in the league and complete the 13-0 demolition of Global Cebu.
“We just focus every game,” said Man of the match Mike Ott. We want to go in and prepare ourselves and do our best and thats what I think everyone did today. Everybody wanted to play, have fun, work hard, and thats the result, Ott added.
The Busmen regained their six point lead on top of the table with nine games left in the league season. They will next play the Philippine Air Force on September 14 after the FIFA International break.

Mendiola holds Stallion Laguna to goalless draw

By Ivan Saldajeno

BINAN--Despite missing out on a few great chances to score, Mendiola still did enough to keep Stallion Laguna at bay in a stunning goalless draw in their PFL clash at the Binan Football Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite Stallion Laguna being the aggressor for almost the entire match, the home side failed to find the target.

In fact, it was Mendiola which had huge chances, especially in the second half, when Alen Angeles found himself with only Pepito Hayeson, who started at goalkeeper for the injured Nelson Gasic, to beat only to send his shot over the bar.

Mendiola enters the FIFA international break with 11 points after 14 matches, somehow strengthening its hold of the fifth spot.

Stallion Laguna, on the other hand, failed to reclaim solo third place from idle Green Archers United, and instead, both sides are now tied on 22 points with the latter slightly ahead on goal difference ahead of their showdown on Saturday night at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa.

WOMEN: Yee Oo leads Myanmar to third spot

CHONBURI (27 August 2019) – A fabulous opening goal from top striker Yee Yee Oo led Myanmar to the third spot of the AFF Women’s Championship when they sidestepped the Philippines 3-0 in the classification match that was played this afternoon at the Institute of Physical Education (IPE).
The one goal today should see the 29-year-old forward cement her place as the top striker at this year’s championship with eight goals – provided that nearest challenger Pham Hai Yen from Vietnam do not score at least three goals in their final against Vietnam later this evening.
“The heat was intense in the first half, so the players had to play it smart and not risk too much,” said Myanmar head coach Win Thu Moe. “In the second half, they stick to the plan which has been set and that allowed us to get behind the defenders with more ease.”
Coupled with the extreme heat and the competitive nature of both teams, chances were few in the first half as both teams were just looking for the opening mistakes to capitalize on.
It was not until the second half that the match came alive where in the 63rdminute, Yee Oo pounced on a loose clearance for a placing shot to beat Philippines keeper Inna Palacios for the first time on the night.
And two minutes later, Myanmar doubled their advantage with substitute Nu Nu punishing a miscommunication between Palacios and Hali Long to score.
Myanmar then made sure of their third-placed finish with Nu Nu again finding the target from close.

WOMEN: Tuyet Dung curler puts Vietnam in final

CHONBURI (25 August 2019) – A curling shot from Nguyen Thu Tuyet Dung gave Vietnam their place in the final of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 when they beat the Philippines 2-1 in the semifinal that was played at the Institute of Physical Education (IPE) here.
It was Vietnam’s second final in three years after last making it in 2017.
“It was not easy to play against the Philippines. They defended well and even Thailand struggled against them,” said Vietnam head coach Mai Duc Chung. “At the start, we did not play well and this is one area which we need to improve. We need to settle down early.”
Both teams played it cautious at the start as Vietnam seem to be struggling to string two passes together, it was the Philippines who created the first chance in the tenth minute off Quinley Quezada that narrowly missed the target.
Vietnam were soon pushing forward and with captain Huynh Nhu missing a double chance later, a pressing Philippines’ moment down the right saw defender Tran Thi Hong Nhu’s long back pass taking a bounce before going over custodian Tran Thi Kim Thanh and into goal.
The own goal failed to rattle Vietnam as Huynh Nhu then made up for her earlier misses when she made good on a quick counter-attack from Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy in the 41st minute to score the equaliser.
The Philippines continue to struggle to get behind the Vietnam defense marshalled by Pham Thi Tuoi as the best they could muster was a rifling shot from Quezada that was forced out.
Vietnam were more brazen into the second half as they controlled the game from Hunyh Nhu distributive prowess.
She was again in the thick of the action in the 51st minute but her short pass was wasted by Thi Tuoi weak effort.
However just six minutes later. Vietnam grabbed their second of the evening and the winner with a wonderful curling shot from Tuyet Dung.
With the game fast slipping away, the Philippines tried hard to look for the equaliser but they were just unable to find their way through a stubborn Vietnam backline as the scored stayed all the way to the finish.
“It was difficult to stop their combination play and that forced us to take a more defensive position,” said Philippines head coach Marnelli Dimzon.”But the future is good for us as we have several good players.”

Optimism high for Malditas in semis clash vs Vietnam

By:  -

Vietnam, a team that has stamped its class on the Philippines over the past decade, stands in the way of the Malditas’ bid of reaching the finals of the AFF Women’s Championships on Sunday in Chonburi, Thailand.
But national women’s coach Let Dimzon insists confidence within the team is at an all-time high after the Filipinos advanced to the semifinals for the first time in tournament history following a 4-0 beating of Singapore last Friday.

Dimzon believes the squad can pull off an upset, even if the unbeaten Vietnamese have won six times over the Philippines in the past decade.
“If we control the direct play of Vietnam, we are in a good spot for the finals,” said Dimzon, who noted the improvement of her team which she started handling in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.
Except for the 2-4 loss to Thailand, the Malditas have been terrific in the tournament, besting Malaysia, Timor Leste and Singapore by scoring 14 goals.
“I’m very happy and proud for the performance of the team from the first game down to the last game of the group stage,” said Dimzon. “Our players fought hard, they well manage the game and followed the plan, though there still more aspect to improve on. We need to strengthen both attacking and defending when we face Vietnam.”
Dimzon pointed to the players’ familiarity with her and the system she has put in as one of the keys to their success in the tournament.

Singapore WNT 0-4 Philippines WNT

The Philippine Women’s National Team clinched a berth to the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 knockout stages following a comprehensive 4-0 win over Singapore in the final Group A match last Friday, 23 August 2019 at Institute of Physical Education in Chonburi, Thailand.
It is the first time that the Philippines has qualified in the knock-out stages of the competition. The team finished second in Group A behind Thailand with 9 points after four matches.
Forward Alisha del Campo led the team with a hat-trick performance. Quinley Quezada also netted her fourth goal of the tournament to draw level with fellow top scorer Camille Rodriguez.
Del Campo opened her account in the first minute of the match. A long ball from Sara Castañeda found the forward past the offside trap, and finished with ease.
Quezada added the second a mere five minutes after the opener. A half-clearance from Singapore allowed Hazel Lustan to send the ball in for the forward to finish.
The Philippines finished the first half with a three-goal lead. Del Campo headed in her second goal in the 45th minute after Dionesa Tolentin’s first time shot was denied by the goalkeeper.
Del Campo completed her hat-trick and the rout in the 50th minute. The forward punished the Singapore defense with a well-timed run to snatch the ball away and in to the back of the net.
“The Philippine Women’s National Team’s group stage performance has been an inspiring one,” said PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “We congratulate the team for this achievement, but the job is not yet done. We wish the team all the best in the semi-finals.”
The Philippines, which is managed by Jefferson Cheng and supported by Philippine Sports Commission and MVP Sports Foundation, will face Group B winners Vietnam in the semi-final on Sunday, 25 August 2019.”

CERES-NEGROS CONTINUES UNBEATEN RUN AGAINST MENDIOLA

Ceres-Negros FC produced its 12th straight victory in the Philippines Football League after a 4-1 conquest of Mendiola FC last August 21 at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa Batanga
Braces from Mike Ott and Robert Lopez Mendy and a man of the match performance from Stephan Schrock was enough to keep the PFL newbies at bay.
Chances came early for both squads as Dylan De Bruycker’s attempt in the 2nd minute was palmed over while Ashley Flores’ strike was straight to Jun Badeloc.
It was only in the 17th minute when Ceres-Negros broke the ice after Mike Ott slammed in a rebound after an initial cross from Maranon was blocked.
Flores had the golden chance to equalize minutes later but Badelic gets the best of him on the one-on-one. Angeles tried to rebound but he shot wide of the open goal.
Schrock had a good chance just moments later but Dini Outaraa covered well. Lopez Mendy made it 2-0 five minutes later after he broke free in the wings and lifted the ball past the keeper and into the top corner.
Mendiola pushed the tempo near the hour mark but inaccurate shots and good defending from the busmen prevented the hosts from scoring. They finally broke into the score sheet after Angeles outran his marker and rifled home the goal.
Ceres-Negros had plenty of shots near the end of the half but simply couldn’t convert. Lopez Mendy had two shots in front of goal but he cant get the right touch while a Bienvenido Maranon shot was miraculously saved by the keeper including a follow up from De Murga.
Lopez Mendy made up for his previous misses and shot to the far post in the 41st minute to restore the two-goal advantage. Ceres-Negros finished the half with a 3-1 scoreline.
The Busmen continued their onslaught in the second half when Miguel Tanton set Mendy for a one-on-one but the keeper came out with a fine save.
Mendiola had a fine set piece for Ricky Sendra but his header was well wide. Schrock burst into the box and was clipped but referee Clifford Daypuyat waved it off.
Twin chances came for Mendiola as Flores freed himself for a left footed shot but the ball curled over the top corner. He sprinted past his marker a minute later but couldn’t finish to the far post.
Ceres-Negros delivered the final nail in the coffin in the 61st after a fine pass from De Bruycker was brilliantly finished by Ott to make it 4-1.
Mendiola had consecutive chances from Hamed Hadjemadi and Sendra but both were kept out by Badelic. Schrock initiated a brilliant breakaway in the 73rd and tried to chip the keeper but the ball just skipped past the second post.
Maranon teed up Lopez Mendy who faked a defender before the shot but the keeper was positioned well for the save. The Negros came up with multiple chances after but were all saved by Ouatarra.
Robert Corsame came up with a counter for Mendiola but his eventual shot was straight to Badelic. Ceres-Negros almost had a fifth two minutes from time when Lopez Mendy headed in a Schrock cross.
The ball seemed to have cross the line but the referees did not budge after Ouatarra manage to palm it back to the playing field.
Both teams would each get a long distance shot in the dying minutes but Ceres-Negros finished the match with a three goal cushion.
“It’s always hard to play Mendiola because they give everything against us,” said Coach Risto Vidakovic. “Everyone is improving, not like in the beginning, because every club now is not easy to beat especially on this pitch.”
The Ceres-Negros Coach thought the quality of the pitch was not favorable to his team’s style of play but still commended his players for the result. “The boys gave everything today and they deserved the win,” Vidakovic added.
The Busmen will play against Global Cebu in their 15th match of the season on August 28.

WOMEN: Thais fight back to beat Philippines

CHONBURI (21 August 2019) – In the top of the table clash, hosts Thailand came back twice to beat the Philippines 4-2 in an exhilarating encounter of Group A of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 here at the Institute of Physical Education.

In the decisive game of the group to ultimately decide the group winner, Thailand’s victory on the day ensured that they are in the driver’s seat with the full nine points from three matches played, going into the final game of the group in two days.

“We were careless when we lost the ball and that led to us conceding the two goals. It was a very close game and it was not easy to create chances against a team at the same level as us,” said Thailand head coach Naruphon Kaenson after the game.

The Thais, featuring a handful of players that had played at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, were the first off the block as they pushed the Philippines on defensive mode.

But it was to be the Philippines who made the scoresheet first in the 11thminute when Quinley Quizada picked up the through ball from Sara Castaneda to slot the ball beyond the reach of Thai custodian Sutthiboon Salita.

The Thai girls did not have to wait too long for the equalizer when the unmarked Chalyarak Jaruwan scored from close as the Philippines defence failed to make the clearance.
The game went into higher gear as Thailand once again took control of the pace and rhythm of the game to press the Philippines back, well into the second half.

But after surviving the onslaught for long periods, a quick counter in the 66thminute saw the Philippines going in front instead when Quinley capitalized on a Thai defensive lapse to score.

The hardworking Nildhamrong Suchawadee was all over the place as she switches from one flank to another and in she provided the cross in the 74thminute for Thailand’s second goal for Thongsombut Rattikan to finish from close range.

The Philippines’ backline became under increasing pressure after that and just a minute later, Thailand went ahead for the first time in the game with Intamee Silawan making good on the cross from Thongsombut.

And right at the end, a failed clearance from the Philippines back four saw the waiting Boothduang Wilaipom to finish from close.

“I am really proud of the girls as we played hard today. It was a fantastic game against the hosts and the players should really be proud of what they have displayed,” said Philippines captain Patrice Impelido.
