Kaya FC–Iloilo Raring to Go in AFC Cup Return

Lao Toyota FC vs Kaya FC–Iloilo
Wednesday, February 27, 2019
7:30PM Philippine Time
Laos National Stadium

26 February, 2019; Vientiane, Laos — After a two-year absence from the AFC Cup, Kaya FC–Iloilo are set to make their awaited return against Laotaian champions, Lao Toyota, on Wednesday night (February 27). The match will take place at the Laos National Stadium, and will kickoff at 7:30pm Philippine time. The game will be aired live and free in the Philippines on 5Plus, and on ESPN5’s online streaming platforms.
Kaya FC–Iloilo is in Group H with last year’s ASEAN champions, the rulers of Laos, and the Indonesian league runners-up.
“We are grouped with PSM Makassar, Home United and Lao Toyota. For me, I think we’ll be having a big challenge moving forward. But coming from the history that we have — Kaya FC played in the AFC Cup in 2016 and made the Round of 16 — we’ve come here to perform to a different level. I want my players to have a great performance on a big stage like the AFC Cup,” said Iloilo head coach Noel Marcaida.
But without a competitive match since the end of October, Kaya have their hands full against a team that has dominated Laotian football in recent times. Since their inception in 2013, Lao Toyota have won the domestic league title three times, including the last two seasons. The Laotians are also experienced on the Asian stage, having participated in two previous AFC Cup campaigns.
“I think for both sides it’s very important to get a good result in the first game. This game will dictate how far we can go in this tournament, so it’s important for us to get three points,” said Marcaida. “This is their third AFC Cup campaign, and they’ve been the champions of the Lao league, but we come here ready. We’re prepared for what’s necessary for tomorrow’s game. We will see on the pitch tomorrow how it plays out. We have plans, they have plans. If those plans work in our favor, we’ll have a positive result.”
Lao Toyota’s second-year Japanese coach believes their extensive preparation and experience will be their edge in tomorrow’s awaited contest.
“We’ve had three months preparation for this competition. We also have some new players who can improve our tactics and team spirit. I’m happy with the additions,” said head coach Jun Fukuda. “This is the first game for both teams and this is a very important game for both. We have four experienced players who have already played in AFC Cup before. The first game is tough for everyone, but we’ve prepared a long time, and we’ll use our experience to win this first game.”
For Iloilo captain Jovin Bedic, who was part of Kaya’s 2016 AFC Cup run, the club’s edge goes beyond skill and experience.

“We have quick wingers and quality strikers, but most important is our brotherhood in the team. We’re like family. That’s our strength.”

AFC CUP 2019: CERES-NEGROS 3-2 SHAN UNITED

Ceres-Negros FC opened their 2019 AFC Cup campaign with a 3-2 win over Shan United FC last February 26 at the Panaad Stadium. OJ Porteria topscored with a brace while Bienvenido added another. Zan Min Tun and Dway Ko Chit scored for the visitors.
The home team was dominant in the first half, controlling the pace and it took nineteen minutes for them to break the deadlock. A cutback pass from Jeffrey Christens bounced off two Ceres players before it fell to Porteria who blasted a left footer to make it 1-0.
The Myanmar side had their chance just after the hour mark from a Gustavo free kick but it was cleared by the Ceres defense. Minutes later Maranon raced through another through pass before he was brought down by Phone Min forcing the referee to point to the spot.
Maranon floated the ball dead center at the expense of the keeper who jumped to the wrong side to make it 2-0 for the Busmen. It was almost 3-0 in the 43rd minute when Stephan Schrock beat the keeper with a chip but if was a foot over the crossbar.
Ceres had two more chances in the dying minutes with a long distance attempt from Stephan Schrock but the keeper did well to parry the shot away. Kevin Ingreso found the back of the net after a corner but the assistant referee called an offside on the play.
The half ended with Ceres leading 2-0 over Shan. The second half was a different story as Shan fought back to earn a goal in the 57th. A good cross into the bo allowed Zan Min Tun to sneak in a snapshot to make things interesting.
Porteria had a chance a minute later from distance but Phone made a fine save to deny Ceres. The home side pushed for another goal but Shan was resilient to deny the hosts.
The Negros squad added another after a magical reverse pass from Schrock found Porteria who did good work of his defender before striking another left footer past the keeper to make it 3-1.
hings went from good to bad after the restart after a quick run saw the visitors scoring another goal. A quick run in the flanks resulted to a cross which bounced off a defender and into subsitute Dway Ko Chit who conveniently headed in to make it 3-2 in the 77th.
Four minutes were added on with Ceres barraging in the Shan box highlighted with an acrobatic shot from Schrock which went into the side netting. The referee blew the final whistle to secure the three points to the Philippine squad.

AFC CUP 2019 PREVIEW: CERES-NEGROS VS SHAN UNITED

Ceres-Negros FC now sets its sight on the AFC Cup where they will face Myanmar’s Shan United in Group G of the ASEAN Zone on February 26 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
The busmen were grouped in the zone’s toughest group which also includes Vietnam powerhouse Becamex Bin Duong and Indonesian giants Persija Jakarta.
The Philippine Champions are looking forward to redeem themselves after failing to make the second stage of the AFC Champions League when they fell to Yangon United at home last February 5.
The Negros squad aims to make a good start in the group stages when they face familiar foes in Shan United whom they have faced three times in 2018.
They first met the Taunggyi-based squad in the ACL Preliminaries whom they outlasted by winning in penalties after 120 minutes of action.
The again faced each other again in the group stages of last years AFC Cup where Ceres scored two late goals to earn a victory in Bacolod while a penalty from Bienvenido Maranon was the difference in match under searing conditions in Yangon.
The visitors have strengthened their lineup with Brazilians in Maycon, Dedimar, and Hedipo Conceicao to correct their narrow losses from last year.
Ceres-Negros meanwhile has added Bosnian Mahir Karic up front to reinforce their core and recent local signings in Jun Badelic, Dennis Villanueva, and Alvaro Silva.
Ceres-Negros will be parading their full lineup in front of their home fans to maintain their positive starts in all group games in the last three years.
A come-from behind equalizer against Selangor in Panaad in 2016, a 1-1 draw in Hanoi in 2017, and a 9-0 defeat of Beoung Ket at home last year have put the Filipinos on ideal results in opening day.
History aside, another grinding match is expected in the Panaad Stadium with both teams gunning for maximum points at opening day.
Festivities start at 7PM with the match scheduled to be shown live on national tv on the 5Plus channel and on cable tv via Fox Sports 2.

AFF U22 LG CUP: Thailand 3-0 Philippines

PHNOM PENH (19 Feb 2019) – Two wins out of two have given Thailand their place in the semi-finals of the AFF Under-22 LG Cup 2019 following their 3-0 win over the Philippines in a Group A this afternoon at the National Olympic Stadium here in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Two goals in the first half and then another after the break gave Thailand – the winner of the inaugural tournament in 2005 – the full six points from two matches played.
“It was a much better performance than what we showed in the first game (against Timor Leste),” said Jaroensak Wonggorn, the scorer of the first goal after the match. “But the heat was really intense today.”
In spite of the bearing heat, Thailand showed no signs of letting things slide as they took the early initiative to push forward.
And just three minutes into the game, the found the opener when Jaroensak beat the offside trap to fire the ball past Philippines custodian Michael Cangco Asong.
The Philippines were struggling to contain the speedy Thai forwards and they could not stop them from adding to the scoreline in the 12th minte with Kittipong Sansanit providing the cross and Jedsadakorn Kowngam nodding the ball in from close.
The Philippines finally came alive in the second half as Mark Winhoffer used his physical presence to his advantage. But with the lack of support upfront and Rico Andres lacking that precision with the crosses, it was always going to be a struggle.
The best that the Philippines could muster was a well-taken freekick from Winhoffer right at the hour mark but which came off the crossbar instead.
And seven minutes to the end, Thailand wrapped things up with their goal of the game when captain Saringkan Promsupa burst through for a stiff grounder past Asong.
“Thailand were every bit as what we expected them to be,” said captain Dimitri Limbo. “But we tried very hard to match them and I thought that we came close in the second half.”

CERES COMPLETES PRESEASON CAMP IN SINGAPORE

Ceres-Negros FC completed their preseason camp after completing two training matches against Singapore Premiere League squad’s Home United FC and Geylang International FC last February 14 & 19 in Singapore.
The busmen flew to the lion city after their elimination from the AFC Champions league and faced their tormentors in last years ASEAN Final on Valentines day.
The first half ended scoreless with Ceres earning three good chances but all missed their mark to break the deadlock. The second half saw a different story with the visitors racing to two quick goals.
A goal from Bienvenido Maranon off a Miguel Tanton assist and a scrappy goal by Stephan Schrock from a keeper error broke the deadlock for the match while Home United added another in the end.
The second match a more intense affair which saw a many cards with three people sent off. A lone goal from Mike Ott from a Maranon assist would be the difference in the training match with Geylang.
The PFL champs will now complete their preparations before facing Shan United in its opening group match in the AFC Cup of February 26 in Bacolod. Ticket details will be announce on the Ceres-Negros FC Facebook event.

AFF U22 LG CUP: COMEBACK WIN FOR VIETNAM

PHNOM PENH (17 Feb 2019) – Two quick goals in the second half gave Vietnam a hard fought 2-1 win over the Philippines in the opening game of Group A of the Under-22 LG Cup 2019 this afternoon at the National Olympic Stadium here in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
But the win would no doubt have given Vietnam head coach Nguyen Quoc Tuan plenty to think about as his team wasted a hatful of chances and had to endure some anxious moments before they were able to pick up the full points.
“I am pleased with the results today,” he quipped afterwards.
Vietnam were the overwhelming favourite at the start of the match but as the game progresses, they would find things hard going as Philippines keeper Michael Cangco Asong made saves after incredible saves.
Nguyen Huu Thanh, Le Van Xuan and Tran  Bao Toan all failed from close or from afield as Asong hit all the right notes to stop the ball from going in at the end of an exhilarating first half.
But just six minutes after the breather, Vietnam fell behind when Jeremiah Chaboun Borlongan dug in superb freekick to beat custodian Phan Van Bieu from close.
The Philippines then held on for long periods before they finally caved in the 74th minute when substitute Tran Danh Trung made good on the cross from Xuan Tu.
And four minutes later, Vietnam finally went ahead for the first time in the game off a clever flick from another substitute Le Minh Binh from a corner.
“The boys fought hard. But we collapsed towards the end. Thi sis the results of just two weeks of training. I don’t blame the players. They did well under the circumstances,” added Philippines head coach Andres Gonzales.
