Laguna spoils Sanchez's virtual homecoming, stuns Cebu in rare Friday clash

By Ivan Saldajeno

BIÑAN--Stallion Laguna proved to no less than Rufo Sanchez that the winning tradition remains with or without him.

Laguna hacked out a huge 2-1 win against Sanchez and his current club Cebu at the Biñan Football Stadium in a rare Friday night PFL clash.

Terrence Linatoc and Jhan-Jhan Melliza delivered the goods for Laguna in the second half as the host squad stunned the visiting side despite a late scare.

Linatoc drew first blood right at the hour mark when Fitch Arboleda found him through a low cross and slotted the ball past Patrick Deyto.

Deyto then committed a huge blunder in the 85th minute when he, already out of his own box, dished out an errant pass to a Cebu teammate, which Melliza capitalized by picking the pass and kicking a rocket goal to the now wide open goal for the 2-0 count.

Sanchez did provide some scare for his former club as he put Cebu on the board just as the fourth official announced the added time.

Cebu even had a crack at forcing the draw at the death as the club was given a free kick from just outside the penalty spot, but Yu Hoshide's try hit the Laguna wall, and Ko Kyung-Joon saved the full three points by heading the ball out.

Laguna is now within four points of Marikina for fifth place and five of Negros for fourth place.

Cebu, on the other hand, failed to go past Makati for second place as the goal difference gap widened in favor of the latter.

Prov'l engineer explains P40-M budget for Panaad Football Field new lightings

To meet the lighting requirement set by FIFA in hosting international football games, the provincial government of Negros Occidental appropriated P40 million for the purchase and installation of new lights at the Panaad Football Field, Provincial Engineer Ernie Mapa explained yesterday.
He said the existing lights at the Panaad Field, which is about 600 to 700 lumens, are already deteriorating and do not conform with the international standard of 1,300 to 1,400 lumens set by FIFA, Mapa said.
“There were complaints from the players during the previous games about the lights at the Panaad. We need to conform to the standard set by FIFA to continue hosing international competitions,” Mapa said.
The P40 million supplemental budget appropriated by the SangguniangPanlalawigan will be used to purchase four poles with flood lights that will get rid of unnecessary shadows and illuminate the field like it's daytime, the provincial engineer added.
The old lights, which were actually transferred from the Pag-laum Football Field to the Panaad Stadium several years ago, will be sent to Sagay City for the use of its football field.
“An additional P10 million budget has been approved by the SP to pull out the old lights from Panaad and its installation in Sagay Football Field,” Mapa said.
He added that the Provincial Engineer's Office does not have the equipment and the expertise to install these lights.
The provincial engineer explained the technical requirement set by FIFA after several sectors scored the provincial government for the P40 million appropriation for the lights in Panaad.
With the popularity of football in Negros Occidental, the Philippine Football Federation has included the Panaad Stadium as one of the venues for its international competitions.
The national men's football team, the Azkals, are scheduled to play at the Panaad on September 5, against Yemen for their match in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers.*NAB

SEAG Football: Young Azkals eliminated as Malditas were badly beaten

By Kevin Estrada

MANILA -- It was the saddest day for Filipino football fans in the Southeast Asian Games, as the medal hopes of both its Women's and Men's Under-22 teams were all but dashed in their penultimate fixtures earlier today in Malaysia.

Marlon Maro's quest in getting the country's first medal in men's football will have to wait for two more years, yielding to the defending SEAG champion Thailand in Selayang, 2-0.

Worawoot Srimaka's men put the Young Azkals away with a first-half performance, with Montree Promsawa shoved the Thais ahead with a diving header in the 28th minute.

Sittichok Kannoo then sealed the Filipinos' doom in Group B with a close-ranged shot in added time to condemn them to their third straight loss.

The Young Azkals will play for pride on Thursday, capping off their SEA Games campaign against still-winless East Timor who are playing against Cambodia as of this writing.

Over in UM Arena, Let Dimzon's medal aspirations took a massive hit, when Myanmar fired six without any reply on them to solidify their hold in the bronze medal position.

With a point to prove after missing out on Jordan, the Goldem Girls served up a huge lesson to the Women's Asian Cup-bound Malditas, with a pair of quick fire goals put the tie away when they lead 4-0 at the half.

Dimzon's decision to start Faith Ruetas on goal have backfired when Khin Moe Wai and Win Theingi Tun found the back of the net at the fourth and the sixth minute respectively.

Myanmar then piled on the misery to the former U-16 netminder, with two goals in a space of a minute through Yi Yi Ooi (18') and Naw Arlow Wer Phaw (19') forced Dimzon to replace her with first-choice Inna Palacios, who then kept a clean sheet until half time.

In the second half, Moe Wai added more insult to the injury, scoring two more goals in the 80th and in the 93rd minute to complete her hat-trick and end their campaign at 6 points.

With a massive -8 goal difference, the Malditas will have to win convincingly against Thailand to get a shot at the bronze.

Makati, Marikina settle for 2-2 stalemate

By Ivan Saldajeno

MAKATI--Kaya Makati banked on the heroics of goalkeeper Ref Cuaresma to salvage a 2-2 draw against JPV Marikina in one of three scheduled PFL matches on Wednesday night at the University of Makati Stadium.

The veteran netminder delivered at the death with a huge save that kept Marikina from stealing the three points on the road.

Marikina entered the scoreboard first as Taku Uesato drilled a goal just two minutes into play.

Robert Mendy, however, canceled the first blood as he got to the ball first following a footrace and found himself with only Nelson Gasic to beat before striking the ball into the net in the 16th minute.

Uesato, however, sealed his brace with a 39th minute goal that put Marikina back up, 2-1, by halftime.

Early into the second half, however, Makati got a golden opportunity as a Marikina player was slapped with a handball infraction inside the penalty area, giving Makati a penalty kick.

Adam Reed, the designated kicker, did not disappoint as he blasted the ball to the upper right corner of the goal for the 2-all count.

Then Cuaresma took over, saving five huge Marikina shots including three from short distance to save the draw.

But none was more important than his huge save in the last play of the match as Marikina was inches away from the goalmouth anew.

The draw was enough to catapult Makati past Cebu for second place on goal difference. Both clubs will meet on Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

Marikina, on the other hand, remained in fifth place.

SHOCKER IN BACOLOD | Manila deals Negros first home loss

By Kevin Estrada

Simon Greatwich and Meralco Manila busted another run, this time the 11-match unbeaten home streak of Ceres Negros in all competitions (Bob Guerrero/FC Meralco Manila)

MANILA--There is no such thing as forever, even in sports.

That's what league-leading, streak-busting Meralco Manila told a shorthanded Ceres Negros about their unbeaten home record when the Sparks became the first team all season long to get not just one, but all three points in Bacolod in one of the PFL's midweek tripleheader on Wednesday night.

Taking advantage of the absence of Manny Ott (suspension due to cards) and Stephan Schrock (family matters), the capital club of gaffer Aris Caslib scored an improbable 2-1 win that made them the first club in all competitions since South China last year to escape Panaad with a win, ending the Busmen's record-setting 11 match unbeaten run at home in both the PFL and the AFC Cup this season.

With the shocker, Manila not just extended their lead in the table with 36 points, eight more than Kaya Makati and Global Cebu and 11 above their victims, but more importantly, get their huge revenge on Negros who pummeled them for seven unanswered in Rizal last month.

Curt Dizon shocked the City of Smiles when he put Manila in front, almost a Route One style in the 53rd minute, with Florencio Badelic's goal kick was headed by Connor Tacagni towards to the direction of the centre-forward, who sprints past three defenders and finishes with a left-footed rebound past Roland Muller after Super Herrera initially charged down his cross to Jake Morallo.

Twenty minutes later, San Carlos native Jinggoy Valmayor came on for Tacagni and made an instant impact as he had a huge part in doubling the Sparks' lead when he picked out Simon Greatwich from outside of the box and the captain fired a stunning curler that left the former Azkals netminder no chance.

But the Spanish centre-half made the match interesting, pulling one back off a header in the 76th minute to halve the deficit, but they could not find an equalizer to avoid their first home defeat since May 24, 2016.

It was the Philippines’ first win in the SEA Games since 2011 and their first over Cambodia since 2005.
Raymart Cubon opened the scoring in the 50th minute with an unmarked header from a Jarvey Gayoso corner.
Kouichi Belgira doubled the lead late in the match with a well taken free kick to the bottom corner to give Marlon Maro’s side the full three points.
“We prepared for this game,” said Maro. “I’m just happy we were able to start our journey in the tournament on a high.”
Team captain Julian Clarino hailed the performance of the whole team in the win.
“We’re more than grateful,” said Clarino. “(The win is) not just for the team, it’s for the country and that speaks alot.”

Philippine Women’s Team Defeats Malaysia To Open SEA Games Campaign

The Philippine Women’s National team began their SEA Games campaign on the ascendancy after a 2-1 win over hosts Malaysia last Tuesday night at the UiTM Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Captain Patrice Impelido broke the deadlock with a timely header on the stroke of half-time. However Malaysia equalized in the 52nd minute from a Dadree Rofinus goal.
Not to be undone, Camille Rodriguez put the Philippines ahead once again in the 74th minute with a well-taken effort from outside the box. Malaysia tried to find a late equalizer but Marnelli Dimzon’s squad held on for their first victory of the campaign.
“It was good to pick up the three points against a very difficult host,” said Dimzon. “The team did well tonight.”
The Philippine Women’s team will next face Vietnam on Thursday 17 August 2017 at the UM Arena. Kick off is at 4:00 PM.

Philippines Under-22 Begin SEA Games Campaign With Cambodia Clash

Excitement looms for the Philippines Under-22 team when they begin their 29th Southeast Asian Games campaign against Cambodia, Tuesday 15 August 2017, 8:45 PM at the MP Selayang Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Philippines U22 squad flew to Malaysia last Friday ahead of the start of the SEA Games Men’s Under-22 football tournament. The Philippines are drawn in Group B with Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam.
Head coach Marlon Maro is aware of the tough teams in the group, but he expects the team to perform well against the opposition.
“I think we’re ready and we will take one game at a time,” said Maro. “We’re in the group of death, it will be a tough tournament against the best teams in the region but we are confident.”
Maro added that the team’s performance in the AFC Under-23 Championships 2018 Qualifiers will give the Philippine U22 team the chance to surprise their opponents in the group. The Philippines lost to Cambodia, 1-0, in the qualifiers last month in Phnom Penh.
“We have prepared this team well,” added Maro. “There is no reason why we cannot pull off some surprises.”

Philippine Women’s Team Raring To Go In SEA Games

The Philippine Women’s National team begin their 29th Southeast Asian Games campaign with a match against hosts Malaysia, Tuesday 15 August 2017, 8:45 PM at the UiTM Stadium.
The Women’s team arrived in Malaysia last Saturday, 12 August 2017 following their nine-day training camp in Japan in preparation for the SEA Games.
Head coach Marnelli Dimzon is hoping to put on a good result in the tournament. The Philippines are in a single group with Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
“We can match the pace of the other teams,” said Dimzon. “The experience the girls had during the camp will bear fruit in the SEA Games.”
Dimzon will field a relatively young team for the tournament, but expects her players to mount a strong challenge against the teams in the region.
“It will be a tough tournament against the big teams in the region but I am confident,” added Dimzon. “After two weeks of training, we are raring to go.”

PH coach confident of chances against Cambodia in men’s U-22 football

By:

KUALA LUMPUR — Nine points to the semifinals.
That’s the immediate goal of the Philippine men’s under-22 football team here as it embarks against Cambodia Tuesday in the Southeast Asian Games at Selayang Stadium.
Head coach Marlon Maro said the Philippines have a more potent lineup — compared to winless squad in Singapore SEAG — composed of several club players like Kou Ichi Belgira.

But they are up against a motivated Cambodia side whose prime minister reportedly promised them $1,000 each for every won game.
Posted on the aseanfootball.org, Prime minister Hun Sen was also said to have dangled $10,000 each if they win the gold, $7,500 for silver and $4,000 for bronze.
Cambodia’s sponsor Angkor Beer Company reportedly promised $5,000 for a semifinal finish and $8,000 for a gold medal feat.
Despite that, Maro said the Philippines will have a very strong chance of winning in the 8:30 p.m. match.
“They beat us 1-0 with the Philippines having a depleted team and Cambodia playing in their home turf,” said Maro.
Now, according to Maro, the PH strikers are “healthy, very strong and very excited to play.”
However, Games officials didn’t allow the Philippines to train in the evening for “lack of lighted stadium.”
“I don’t understand that because they have so many football stadium with flood lights,” said Maro. “But we will still practice in the morning and the afternoon.”

The country needs to score nine points — a win is worth three points — to make the semifinals.

“I think it’s doable because if there’s one team to dominate it would be (defending champion) Thailand, the rest will split points,” said Maro.
The country’s best performance in the SEAG was bronze in the 1977 SEA Games.
