Del Rosario Excited to Bring Football for Peace to Zamboanga

The Loyola Meralco Sparks and Green Archers United will head down south to Zamboanga on Friday for their second round battle in the 2016 UFL League. Besides fighting for their rankings, both teams will also conduct football clinics as part of the “Football for Peace” initiative.
The campaign aims to use the sport of football to divert the attention of more than 200 kids away from the prevalent environment of violence in conflict zones.

“I’m looking forward to going out there – sharing our football to the rest of the country. I think they should have games all over the country like Cebu, Bacolod and all the main football areas as well. It’s nice to be going down especially for this cause – Football for Peace,” he said.

The September 30 encounter against Green Archers will be the first ever UFL match played outside of Metro Manila, and Del Rosario hopes it will become a more regular occurrence.

“I can’t wait to get out of the city and play football. There’s so much support for football outside Manila and Makati. Most of the knowledge here is basketball, basketball, basketball. But then, you go outside, you go to the province, there’s a lot for football and hopefully, when the kids see that, it inspires them to want to play more and to want to get to another level,” he added.

Like the rest of the squad, the veteran footballer is eager to interact with the children in Zamboanga, and he hopes to make a lasting impact over the course of the three-day visit.

“It’s huge for football. It’s all about inspiring these kids and touching the grass roots, making them dream one day they can be in our shoes.”

Azkals’ tuneup games moved to old Rizal

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals’ upcoming international friendlies against Bahrain and North Korea have been moved from their original venue, the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan, to the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Philippine Football Federation general secretary Edwin Gastanes said transfer was done to make room for ongoing improvement works on the PSS’s natural grass field and ensure it would be in “optimum condition” for the AFF Suzuki Cup group matches in November.

The Azkals are slated to play Bahrain on Oct. 7 and North Korea on Oct. 10 ahead of their stint in the Suzuki Cup group stage from Nov. 19-25. The Pinoy booters are also penciled for a home friendly versus Kyrgyzstan at the PSS on Nov. 9 but this will likely be transferred to Rizal’s artificial turf as well, according to Gastanes.

“The PFF is required to have the natural grass field in the primary venue (PSS) in tip-top condition for the Suzuki Cup matches,” Gastanes told The STAR.

DPR Korea, under coach Jørn Andersen, places at 118th in the FIFA World Rankings. Philippines drew DPR Korea 0-0 last 08 October 2015 and won 3-2 in the second meeting last 29 March 2016 at the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Match Preview: Ceres v Laos

Ceres-La Salle FC will complete their September schedule when it faces Laos FC on September 28 at the Rizal Memorial. The Busmen are keen to maintain their winning ways after the drubbing of Loyola last weekend.
The Bacolod squad will seek the mastery of Laos who was blown out in their last encounter with an 11-0 scoreline. Adrian Gallardo top-scored in that affair scoring six against the former Division two champions last July 7. Laos just came off a 8-0 drubbing against Kaya last weekend and have yet to secure points in the second round.
Ceres will now try to reinforce their position in second place with only two remaining games in the league after this midweek clash. Being level in points with JP Voltes and with only a one point lead against Loyola, the 2015 league champions will fight for the remaining AFC Cup slot having Global and JP Voltes as their final two opponents by late October. The match with Laos FC kicks off on Wednesday at 130PM.

PFF ensures Optimum Condition of pitch

The October international friendlies between the Philippines and Bahrain, and Philippines and DPR Korea, slated on 07 October and 10 October 2016 respectively, will now take place at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila. The match ups were initially announced to be played at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Global blanks Stallion to inch closer to the UFL double

MANILA-- They are just within reach of making history.

League leaders Global are now within striking distance of being the third UFL side to achieve the Double, after blanking a hapless Stallion side for three unanswered goals late Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Stadium

Ivorian forward Arthur Kouassi duly answered the call for manager John Burridge, stepping up big-time for the suspended Misagh Bahadoran with a first-half brace to put them into 44 points, nine points way ahead of closest pursuers Ceres with just two matches left.

A second-half free kick by Omid Nazari and a clean sheet for Patrick Deyto were the other bright spots for Global as they quickly brushed aside Wednesday's shocking setback to JP Voltes with a convincing shutout as they only needed at least of a draw against Laos on Sunday to finally get what is denied to them five years ago.

"But it's not all over yet. We can't take Laos for granted. We need one point. And I will not rest until we get that one point," the English journeyman talked to the media after the match.

Knowing that they only need four points in their last three matches, Global went to work right away and were rewarded by the former Jeepney marksman just 27 minutes in by pouncing on a Nazari chance to rebound the ball past Ref Cuaresma.

Kouassi could have doubled their lead ten minutes later, but muffed his shot in front of the goal to send it wide to the right side.

But hard work deserves to be rewarded and it paid off for the Ivorian just seconds before halftime as he pounced on a Serge Kaole throw-in and blasts the ball from a tight angle to complete his brace, getting Global virtually a hand on the trophy.

Deyto got one huge save in each half to get his clean sheet, thwarting his former La Salle teammate Nate Alquiros in the 26th, then followed by a acrobatic stop on Carlo Polli's free kick in the 79th minute that could have changed the outcome had it come in.

"Our goalkeeper [Deyto] was magnificent, because he made one fantastic save in the first half. That would have put them [Stallion] 1-0 up. And he made a terrific save from a free kick which could have made 2-1 it would have been panic stations," the Global boss who is a goalkeeper himself during his playing years added.

Six minutes after Deyto stopped Polli, Nazari sealed all three points with a dipping free kick that left the former Loyola custodian stranded in his place.

"That was a hard game. The plan was we don't concede a goal. We keep a clean sheet. As long as we win this game," Burridge concluded.

Promising high school defender Jefferson to join Frontale

Kawasaki Frontale this week announced that Toko Gakuen High School defender Jefferson Tabinas has tentatively agreed to join the club in 2017.

The 18-year-old, who has a Ghanian father and Filipino mother, toured Germany earlier this year as part of an All-Japan High School Selection. 

He was selected as an outstanding player of the 2015 National High School Football Tournament and currently serves as his team’s captain.

“I’m grateful to all of my managers, coaches, and of course my parents for having made me the player I am today,” Tabinas said. 

“I hope to repay them by taking my training seriously and earning the chance to play as a member of Kawasaki Frontale.

Schrocky putting on a show as Ceres runs riot at wayward Loyola to go second

MANILA-- Ceres' dreams to return to Asian football next season got  a huge boost late Saturday afternoon, after dispatching title rivals Loyola, 4-1 in a battle between the league's number two and three here at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Bacolod Busmen recovered from a stinging loss to Kaya last week just in time, with Stephan Schröck notching a hat-trick and Manny Ott netting a goal of his own to save Risto Vidaković's job as the champions overtaken Loyola in second with 35 points on the league table.

Loyola started the match at the wrong foot and they were made to pay for it dearly, as Simon Greatwich's consolation strike two minutes before full time was not enough for them, dragging the Sparks down to fourth, a point behind idle JP Voltes who just came from a shock win over league leaders Global.

Simon McMenemy took a huge gamble in putting Jake Morallo and Anto Gonzales in the full-back slots and elevating last Sunday's match-winner Koichi Belgira in the left wing. Ceres meanwhile, welcomes the return of goalkeeper Louie Casas and skipper Kim Sang-min to the starting fold for the suspended Val Kama, partnering them with Jason Sabio in the central defence.

However, it was the on-loan dynamo who shone the brightest early on, as he fired a free kick that left Gui Hasegawa stranded to put Ceres on the board first just eight minutes in.

And it only took twelve minutes for Schrocky to get his brace, as he fired a left foot past the shellshocked netminder to double the champion's advanta in the match, before the left post denied him of a hat-trick heading into the halftime break.

Manny Ott made sure of getting all three points just six minutes into the restart with a flick to the far post past the Brazilian for a 3-0 lead. And with just six minutes before full time, Schrocky completed his hat trick with his shot to Hasegawa's left post to add salt into the woods.

The youngest of the Greatwich siblings wrecked Casas's pursuit of the clean sheet with a close range hit but it was not meant to be for the one-time cup holders as they failed to repeat their opening day win over Ceres last April 30.

Vidaković lauded the fortitude of his men to recover in time after a crushing loss last week.

"It was crucial today. If we lose, that's the league [season] for us. We have three games left and we try to give our best," the Serbian tactician spoke to the press after the match.

Football for Peace’ brings hope to conflict-hit Zambo

GAME seven may be the two best words in sports. But its best moment always happens when it transcends competition.

As the UFL League nears its conclusion, a two clubs are set to head down south to not just shake the table but also give hope to a conflict-stricken part of the country.

Loyola-Meralco FC, which sits at third place of the 12-team table, will face seventh-place Green Archers United in Zamboanga City as part of the initiative called “Football for Peace.”

Not only will the two teams try to improve their standings in the table, the players will also conduct clinics for 200 kids in the area.

Belay Fernando, the assistant general manager of the Sparks, said Football for Peace was conceptualized back in 2011 when the Philippine Marine Corps stationed in Mindanao wanted to help kids in conflict-riddled areas.

“They (the Marines) wanted to promote sports specifically football to the kids who are used to a certain way of life,” said Fernando Thursday night on SportsIQ, Inquirer’s live omni platform sports talk show. “They’re more prone to carrying guns than books, guns than soccer balls.”

Sparks head coach Simon McMenemy, who went to Tawi-Tawi in 2015 with his team, said such clinics are used to give the kids opportunities to develop not only their sporting abilities but also their social skills.

“You go to these clinics, you’re not looking to go find David Beckham you’re going to go down there and give opportunities for kids to play together especially in that part of the world you’ve got rival families, you’ve got rival towns, you’ve got so much rivalry going all over the place,” said McMenemy. “To be involved in a project that promotes that and be able to do that for the Philippines was a real honor for a foreigner coming into a country.”

Sparks midfielder James Younghusband said their first game in Zamboanga has the potential to further promote football in the country, a nation obsessed with basketball.

“People in Zamboanga get to experience football for the first time, and that’s one of our goals to promote the sport,” said Younghusband.

Green Archers striker Chieffy Caligdong playing in Zamboanga is their part in helping Mindanao achieve peace.

In 2013, Zamboanga became a combat zone when renegade members of the Moro National Liberation Front attacked the city, killing 220, including 12 civilians.

“Playing football in Zamboanga City, we would be able to touch everybody’s lives and yung kids para ma-inspire sila and para sa mga tao na ma-encourage maglaro ng football,” said Caligdong.

Its now or never for Ceres-La Salle FC as they try to secure the second spot against a resurgent Loyola Meralco FC on September 24. The Bacolod squad, coming off an added time loss against Kaya FC, is also keen to launch a last ditch attempt on the title as Global lost against JP Voltes in midweek action.
The Busmen has had a disappointing stretch of results in the second round after losing against Green Archers, Kaya, and drawing with Stallion. The loss of points dampened the squads’ title aspirations and opening the door for other teams to get ahead in the table.
Loyola just came of a character win against a tough JP Voltes squad making themselves the best club to snatch the title away from Global. Phil Younghusband was instrumental in their 3-2 win against the Japanese-flavored side and is a man to be marked by Ceres. Their first encounter in early May saw Loyola winning 3-2 against Ceres, dealing the defending champions their first loss in the league.
Ceres must rediscover their winning form in order to avenge the first round loss and stamp their authority in the second spot. Loyola is temporarily in third place with 34 points leading by two against the Bacolod squad who is in fourth. JP Voltes is in second spot with 35 points but have played two games more than Ceres and Loyola.
The match kicks off on Saturday, 4pm, in the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

James Younghusband Reflects on JP Voltes Thriller

Last Sunday, the Loyola Meralco Sparks rallied in the second half and snatched a 3-2 win against JP Voltes to retake second spot in the 2016 UFL League. Despite the win and its implications on potential AFC Cup qualification, team captain James Younghusband expressed his disappointment with how the squad played — particularly in the first half.
“Obviously, we know we are better than our first half performance. We are all disappointed with the way we played even though we won one-nil up,” said Younghusband.
Though wary of the room of improvement, the skipper commended the big adjustment that the whole team made during their second half resurgence.
“Performance-wise, it’s just very disappointing but I think it was a big change, a big up percentage-wise in terms of work rate in the second half. I think we got our reward,” said the captain.
With the recent win, the Sparks are closer to the aim of snagging a slot in the 2017 AFC Cup slot, two points ahead of nearest rivals Ceres-La Salle and JP Voltes.
“Obviously, it’s great to be there. I said our aim last week is always first place and this brings us closer. We just want to compete with the top. It’s always the motivation,” Younghusband said.
The Sparks next face Ceres on Saturday, in what will be a crucial encounter in deciding which team will join Global as the second Filipino representative in the AFC Cup. The crunch tie will kickoff at 4:00pm at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Fiji wants more games

THE Philippines football team has confirmed an international match against Fiji however Fiji Football Association says playing only one match is not a good idea for them.

Fiji FA senior vice-president and national team director Tarunesh Reddy said they wanted to play many matches while on the tour.

"The soccer loving fans are worried about the national football ranking and hence we are working on getting more international matches for the team," Reddy said.

"Philippine wants to host us but only for one match. We do not want to go and play one match since it is every expensive.

"We want to play other teams as well."

In the latest  FIFA ranking, Fiji has climbed up eight places to 179 th position from 187. The side is also top six football country in the Oceania region.

"The ratings cannot be based only on one international match. There are other factors that contribute towards the ranking for a team," he added.

"Some of the factors that contributed towards our ranking includes OFC Nations Cup and the international match against Malaysia.

"This also applies to the other teams who are above us in the rankings no matter whether they had played or not."

Tanton comes in the nick of time as Kaya shatters Ceres' title defence

MANILA-- There was an old adage that out of the darkness comes the light.

That is how Miguel Tanton was described, after giving Kaya a well deserved revenge on reigning champions Ceres early Saturday evening at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The midfield dynamo for Chris Greatwich slotted home the last-gasp winner in added time to make a massive dent on the Busmen's title defence, while getting their revenge on a five-goal beatdown on them last July 10 in the process, as they tightened their grasp in fifth place with 28 points, just only three behind bitter rivals Loyola.

Adrian and the rest of Risto Vidakovic's men will left to rue their missed chances in this tight affair despite holding 55% of the possession, which may see their defence of the crown all but slipping away after this setback, just their third overall this season.

The color and the exciting nature of this encounter was very evident in the numbers after the match, in which a total of 24 fouls where whistled by Clifford Daypuyat for both sides as they ended it on a 10-on-9 after three dismissals were carried out for their rough play.

Both teams had made four changes from their first-round encounter, with Ceres getting the biggest shake-up by putting Eduard Sacapaño in place of first-choice Louie Casas and Valentine Kama inserted in the heart of their backline. Kaya have also made their adjustments, by putting in Audie Menzi in central defence and Eric Giganto favored over Robert Lopez-Mendy in the front line.

The match started like fireworks blazing, as they do not need to warm and they they went straight to the goalframe with their attempts getting cleared by their backline.

Disaster struck for Ceres just 12 minutes in, as Kama gets tossed under controversial circumstances when he fouled Jovin Bedic hard in the right wing.

Kaya had few chances in the opening salvo, but they came closest 20 minutes after Kama's dismissal, with Junior Muñoz skied his open header over the crossbar.

Ironically, Kaya were also reduced to 10 men five minutes before the interval, when Shirmar Felongco got his dishonorable discharge after a brutal foul on Bienvenido Marañon as both sides failed to find the back of the net when Daypuyat whistled for halftime.

Second half was a carbon-copy of the first as both sides had their fair share of misses have kept their supporters in their edge of their seats.

But just as the match looked dead set for a goalless stalemate in the midst of darkness that hover over Rizal Memorial, Tanton became the shining light Kaya desperately needed, as he finally snagged the winner deep into added time from close range that sent their fanatical Ultras into hysteria. The winner came at a price, with the midfielder duly dismissed for taking off his shirt for the second bookable offence which did not matter as they finally won their first ever league match against the Busmen on the fourth time of asking.

In the meantime in the second game of the evening, Singapore held out to beat the Philippines 2-1 to ensure that they still have a fighting chance for a place in the next round of the competition.

But it was the Philippines who went ahead first in the evenly contested affair with Jeremiah Borlongan firing in past Singapore keeper Muhammad Adib Azahari.

Singapore then found the equaliser just two minutes later off Joshua Pereira as Haiqal Anugrah then slammed in the winner in the 22nd minutes.

With the win, Singapore have amassed four points and where they will be hoping to beat Timor Leste in two days to make the cut for the semis while at the same time hoping that either Vietnam or Malaysia will pick up the full points in their final game of the group.

Former Adelaide United and Melbourne City winger Iain Ramsay has returned to Australia to seek a deal in the A-League or Asia after trialing with clubs in Europe.

Ramsay has spent time in the Netherlands and Norway in the past three months trying to pick up a deal overseas.

The Philippines international trialed with FC Volendam in the Netherlands In July. He then spent time trialing in Norway last month.

"The club I was at was confident in selling an offensive player to bring me in before the window and was unable to do so," Ramsay told FourFourTwo.

Ramsay left Melbourne City in 2015 and spent six months with Iranian club Tractor Sazi Tabriz. His contract with the Red Wolves was terminated in January.

Perth-born Ramsay said he is now after a club closer to home.

"I'm open to A-League clubs and Asia," he said.

Ramsay made his international debut for the Philipines last year. The 28-year-old left-sided player has scored twice in nine games for the Azkals.

AFF VIETCOMBANK U19: Vietnam take control of Group A

HANOI (15 Sept 2016) – After three matches, Vietnam are in control of Group A of the AFF Vietcombank Under-19 Championship when they overcame a fighting Philippines side 4-3 here tonight at the Hang Day Stadium.

Needing to win after two losses in the group, the Philippines showed they were no pushovers when they made Vietnam work for everything before the homesters were able to win the full three points.

“Again, we did not play as well as we should and defensively, we need to be better,” said Vietnam coach Hoang Anh Tuan.

“We will have a few days rest before the final game in the group (against Malaysia), so we will have time to work on the team.”

But while Vietnam began strongly as they look to inject more confidence into the squad which has been under pressure, it was the Philippines who grabbed the lead after just 13 minutes when Mark Winhoffer capitalised on a defensive mistake from Le Ngoc Bao to score.

The lead was to last just five minutes when Vietnam earned a penalty that was converted by Ha Duc Chinh before the Philippines once again went forward in the 24th minute through the hardwork of Jeremiah Borlongan.

The flanker ran down the left before squaring the ball for Kintaro Miyagi to slot home.

Vietnam finally got their act together in the second half with a second penalty that was converted by Tran Tranh in the 59thminute as Du Chinh then put the game at 4-2 with the fourth goal of the game three minutes later.

The Philippines tried to close the gap and in the dying minutes of the match, Ngoc Boa conceded an own goal for the final scoreline.

“The two penalties were unfortunate but I believe in this boys and they can still play next year. They will be much better in 2017,” said Philippines head coach Dan Padernal.

PH U-19 plays vs host Vietnam

The Philippine Under-19 National Football Team will be battling host Vietnam in the 2016 Asean Football Federation (AFF) U19 Championship today at the Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi.
Vietnam is currently on top of the group standings with a win and a draw.
The Philippines-Vietnam match is at 8 p.m. with the Filipinos still looking to snatch their first win in Group A. The Filipino squad suffered two consecutive losses against separate foes.
Ateneo de Manila University’s midfielder Jordan Blair Jarvis scored the lone goal for the Philippines in their 1-2 loss to Timor Leste squad. The Filipinos absorbed their second loss to Southeast Asian powerhouse Malaysia, 0-5, on Tuesday.
On the other hand, Vietnam is fresh from a convincing 4-1 triumph against Timor Leste through the two-goal performance of striker Tong Anh Ty.
After the Vietnam match, the Philippines will have a two-day break before playing its final game in the preliminary round against Singapore at the Vietnam Youth Training Center on September 17.

Key defenders out for Suzuki tilt

THE PHILIPPINES is seeing action in the AFF Suzuki Cup late this year without some of the defensive stalwarts from the past three editions of the biennial tournament, which all ended in semifinal losses.

But skipper Phil Younghusband believes the Azkals have enough quality to cope with the challenge and expressed confidence the team can win the tournament for the first time.

Rob Gier, Jerry Lucena and Juani Guirado have retired from international football, while Simone Rota and Daisuke Sato could also miss the tournament due to injury and club commitments, respectively, leaving the Azkals with a shortage of options at the back.

“It’s big because you’re not just losing players who have done well for us on the field, but you’re also losing players who are big personalities off the field and that’s a factor,” Younghusband said.

Dennis Villanueva is being groomed to pair up with Amani Aguinaldo at central defense, while Martin Steuble was deployed at rightback in the 2-1 away win over Kyrgyzstan last week.

The Azkals are facing familiar foes in Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore in Group A in the Suzuki Cup which kicks off Nov. 19 at Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.

AFF VIETCOMBANK U19: Timor start well

HANOI (11 Sept 2016) – Timor Leste started their campaign in the AFF Vietcombank Under-19 Championship on the right note when they edged the Philippines 2-1 in the opening game of Group A here this afternoon at the Hang Day Stadium.

Midfielder G. Monteiro gave Timor the best of start when he fired in a rebound after just ten minutes before striker H. Wilson added the second goal of the game in the 37th minute.

“It was good to pick up the full points from the first game but there’s still a lot of work to be done,” said Timor Leste coach Shigeo Yamazaki after the match.

“We have to improve in the midfield if we want to make the next round.”

The Philippines were a little slow off the block and by the time the two Timor goals were scored, they finally sprang into action after the breather.

Mark Winhoffer was a handful each time he goes forward and after some persistence, the Philippines finally pulled a goal back in the 75th minute through Jordan Jarvis from the edge of the Timor box.

“We recovered a little late in the second half although generally we played well in spite of some mistakes here and there,” said Philippines coach Dan Padernal.
