Duo Make Departure from LMSFC
The Loyola Meralco Sparks will be returning from the two-week break without goalkeeper Tomas Trigo, and midfielder Akira Miyayama.
Trigo, who was signed from Team Socceroo back in December of 2014, has returned to Spain, where the Filipino-Spanish player will pursue a career in teaching. During his spell with the club, he won the PFF National Club Championship title in 2015, a tournament where he also earned the Golden Gloves award. He also became a regular with the Philippine National Team, competing for the goalkeeping position all side the likes of Neil Etheridige, Roland Mueller, and Patrick Deyto.
“I have some interesting projects in Spain, so I think this year is the time to leave the Philippines. Sometimes in life there are more important things than football. Now, it’s time to be with my family and to try new projects, so I think it’s the perfect time to leave,” explained Trigo.
“The experience in Loyola was very good. It was one of the best times of my life because, when I came to the Philippines I didn’t think to become a professional football player. My life changed a lot since I joined Loyola. I’m very thankful to all the staff, all my teammates, the coaches because they made me feel at home. I’m very happy. On the other hand, I’m sad because it’s a difficult choice. It’s a difficult decision but I have to take it,” he added.
Meanwhile, Miyayama makes his departure after only six months with the Sparks, a spell that included a recent hat-trick against Agila in the League.
“Aki (Miyayama) is a very good player and I hope that he finds another team, a good team also for himself,” said Guilherme Hasegawa whose Japanese roots made him close to the midfielder.

Guilherme Hasegawa Ready to Prove his Worth
With the departure of goalkeeper Tommy Trigo, the Loyola Meralco Sparks are likely to turn to Guilherme Hasegawa as the main option in between the sticks. Signed at the beginning of the season, the Japanese-Brazilian has started in the last few games, priming him for the added responsibility in the coming second round of League action.
Although Trigo’s return to Spain brings an opportunity to become a central figure in the team, Hasegawa admits he was saddened by Tommy’s departure.
“I just knew at the beginning of the month when he told me. I’m really sad that he will be leaving. It’s a really tough decision for a player to make and he’s still very young. But if that’s what he decides for him, I’m happy for him that he takes that decision. I’m sad to lose one very good teammate. We’ve been training very well to get there. He’s a very good player, a very good goalkeeper,” said Hasegawa.
Guilherme now faces competition from youngster Ace Villanueva, and Ricardo Padilla to be first-choice keeper. And while he accepts his selection isn’t guaranteed, he’s prepared to maximize any chance given to him.
“If I have my opportunities, I will grab it the hardest that I can to prove why I’m here, and that I want to help Meralco however I can. If I have the opportunity to play the following games, I will be very happy. I hope to give all that Meralco needs.”

Star-less Azkals give Perth Glory FC scare before going down in Vigan friendly
- From:
THE Philippine men’s football team gave Perth Glory FC everything it could handle before surrendering a 2-0 decision in their friendly on Tuesday night at the Quirino Stadium in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Despite being without almost half of their usual starting XI, the Azkals held the top Australian side scoreless in the first half, before giving up two goals after intermission, including the second one deep in stoppage time to absorb the shutout loss.
Joe Knowles and Richard Garcia struck the goals for the visitors in the friendly that didn't fall in a Fifa International window, which didn’t compel clubs, like Ceres-La Salle, to release its players for national duty.
That left the Filipino booters with a young squad led by Misagh Bahadoran and Phil and James Younghusband under stand-in coach Aris Caslib.
Still, the Azkals put up a decent defensive stand against an A-League side in a match that formed part of the Filipinos’ early preparations for the Suzuki Cup in November.

PWNT mentor Bautista focuses on fitness, eyes results against ASEAN giants
By Lorenzo Del Carment
The Philippine Women’s National Football Team are off to Myanmar to compete in the 2016 ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship. Hoping to at least reach the semi-finals for the first time in the competition’s history, the Philippines will be facing the likes of Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore in the group stages.
Guiding the PWNT is head coach Buda Bautista. This is the second time Bautista takes over the squad as head coach. Previously, she had been the assistant to then-head coach Ernest Nierras, and had even been a player years ago.
“Stress” was the word jokingly used by Bautista when asked how it felt coaching the PWNT for a second time. She then turned serious and stated that stress and pressure come together in coaching the national team.
“Kinakaya, minamanage naman natin pero siyempre and mangyayari diyan it’s always a short preparation, the players you’re able to get. Tapos yun nga kung may players ka pero the preparation is quite short or not enough, then that is stressful on the part of the coaches. Kasi kumbaga meron kang technical, tactical, lalo na kung hindi ka fit, then kailangan mo i-incorporate ang (fitness)”, Bautista expounded.
Out of a pool of roughly fifty players, and three weeks of intense training sessions, the current PWNT squad is made up of twenty Filipinas who are based either here in the Philippines and overseas in the U.S. Bautista shared, “Right now we have a lot of overseas players which is good. However, ang questionable lang which we’re still working on is yung fitness nila and then I guess they’re (also) a bit too young. In terms of a bit too young, hindi nagkakalayo sa local.”
Bautista added that at least this time around, many of the locals are on their second tour of duty, and that many of the Filipina-Americans have had exposure abroad.
In terms of actual play, Bautista admits that the current PWNT edition lacks goals from up front. Unlike last year, the team will be without the services of Joana Houplin, who has scored 12 goals for the national team since her debut three years ago, and Jesse Shugg, scorer of 3 goals in 8 appearances. Both strikers are unavailable due to personal and professional reasons.
That problem, though, is boosted by the team’s wingers.
“Yung wingers natin like si Krystal De Ramos, she had three goals na, iba naman yung strength ng team ngayon. Mas stronger yung (nasa) side pero we’re still working on the middle. We will maximize the side,” the two-time coach explained.
Bautista believes that it’s all up to the players to show a “nothing is impossible” mentality in their upcoming tournament. In addition to that, she opined that her players’ high mental fortitude made improving the team’s fitness all the more tantamount.
“They have to be match fit, not physically fit kasi different siya eh. Kailangan football fit ka. To improve your endurance you really need to work hard tapos recover na naman. We’re trying to simulate the schedule ng tournament. Makikita kung sino mabilis magrecover. Kung mabilis ka mag recover then you’re fit.”
As mentioned earlier, the Philippines are up against Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore in the group stage. A tough group, when one considers that Thailand participated in the Women’s World Cup last year, while Vietnam are championship contenders in the region. “Definitely parang papasok ka sa butas ng karayom”, Bautista reflected.
Nevertheless, Bautista did not eliminate the possibility of getting positive results through discipline and adhering to the team’s strategy and philosophy, while reiterating that intense defense would be impossible without proper fitness.
“Definitely yung teams ngayon will be hard to play against pero siguro with the right tactics, with the right attitude, right perspective ng mga players, if they really commit with our concept, and malay mo bilog ang bola so maswertehan natin.”
The PWNT face Thailand on matchday one (July 26, 2016; 4:00 PM KO), then Vietnam exactly two days later. Their final group stage game will be against Singapore (July 30, 2016; 7:00PM). In spite of the odds being stacked against the Philippines, Bautista and the rest of the PWNT will be gunning for a first semi-finals appearance — at the very least.

UFL selection gives Perth Glory FC early scare before bowing in All-Star weekend
- From:
THE United Football League All-Stars gave Perth Glory FC an early scare before surrendering a 2-1 decision in front of a sizeable Saturday crowd at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Philippine side gained the early lead, but allowed the top Australian club to come back even before the end of the first half to secure the result in the match that capped off the league’s mid-tournament showcase.
Kaya FC striker Louis Clark unlocked the Perth Glory defense 13 minutes into the match, before the visitors equalized nine minutes later courtesy of Chris Harold then took the lead thanks to Andy Keogh’s conversion just moments before the referee blew his whistle that signaled intermission.
“The (scoreline) doesn’t do our players enough justice because in the first half, on another day we could have been four-one up at the half,” UFL All-Stars coach Simon McMenemy said. “But overall I'm happy and pleased with the boys. They were tested today. Everybody's happy and everybody wins.”
Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe attested to how tough the Philippine selection was.
“I thought they (UFL All-Stars) did well they worked ever so hard,” the British coach said. “We controlled the game. We controlled the tempo, but they play a decent brand of football. And it was enjoyable match to watch.”
The match formed part of the offseason preparation of Perth Glory, which settled for a scoreless draw against Global FC on Wednesday.
The Australian side finishes its Philippine tour with a friendly against the Azkals on Tuesday in Vigan.
The UFL Rest of the World All-Stars blanked the UFL Philippines All-Stars, 3-0, in the curtain-raiser of the All-Star weekend.
Stephen Appiah of Nomads and Global players Arthur Kouassi and Milad Behgandom found the back of the net for the foreign side coached by Global goalkeeping coach Jorge Kuriyama.

(Rizal Memorial Stadium)
1 p.m. – UFL PH vs UFL World
3 p.m. – UFL All-Stars vs Perth Glory
The UFL All-Stars expect a much-improved form from visiting Australian side Perth Glory in their faceoff today in the featured match of the UFL All-Star Weekend at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Held to a scoreless draw by UFL champion and league leader Global last Wednesday, Perth is out to show why it is one of the top clubs in Australia’s A-League in its 3 p.m. meeting with the UFL’s top players.
The opening match at 1 p.m. will feature the UFL’s top Filipino players against the league’s best foreign players, with the locals out to avenge last year’s 5-4 loss to the Rest of the World squad.
The UFL stars hope to give Perth a tough encounter despite the absence of several players, particularly top players from defending league champion Ceres-La Salle and national team members that will suit in next week’s friendly with the same club in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Selected were Global’s Jun Badelic, Jerry Barbaso, and Nick O’Donnell; Loyola’s Kou Ichi Belgira, Ian Clarino, Jason de Jong, Daniel Gadia, Tahj Minniecon, and Jinggoy Valmayor; Stallion’s Joshua Beloya and Balot Doctora; Kaya’s Aly Borromeo, Louis Clark, Shirmar Felongco, and Woody Ugarte; and JP Voltes’ Yu Hoshide and Masaki Yanagawa.
Perth is in the country as part of its preparation for the 2016-17 A-League season. After its tie with Global, the Glory would like nothing more than to secure a victory over the UFL stars before wrapping up their trip with a match against the Azkals.
Meanwhile, Global’s OJ Clarino, JP Voltes’ J Baguioro, Kaya’s Jovin Bedic, and Stallion’s Ref Cuaresma lead the UFL Philippines side against the UFL Rest of the World team powered by the JP Voltes’ Japanese tandem of Takumi Uesato and Takashi Odawara.

Azkals train for Suzuki Cup in China, Spain
By Olmin Leyba
MANILA, Philippines - A pair of overseas training camps with tough friendlies, first in China then in Spain, will highlight the Philippine Azkals’ build-up for the 2016 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup the country is co-hosting in November.
Team manager Dan Palami said a showdown with regular customer North Korea in the Chinese capital on Sept. 2 or 3 is in the offing before the Azkals head to Kyrgyzstan to face the Snow Leopards in an away friendly on Sept. 16.
“We’ll start with a friendly against DPR Korea in Beijing. We’ll be flying to Kyrgyzstan so on the way, instead of just staying over in Beijing as a layover, we’ll do a couple of days training and play a match against North Korea and from there, we go to Kyrgyzstan,” he said.
In October, he said the Azkals are looking to go to Spain and play Canada and Costa Rica.
“We have confirmed our participation and these are being finalized, we’ll have a camp in Spain. According to the organizer there, we’ll be playing against Canada and Costa Rica,” he said.
Palami expects the full team by second week of October.
“We’ll have a full month of preparation (as a full team) which includes a friendly against Kyrgyzstan at home (on Nov. 9),” he said.
The Azkals hope to capitalize on home field advantage in the tourney starting Nov. 19 to achieve a milestone triumph after semis appearances the last three editions.

Azkals put new recruits to the test vs Perth FC
By: Cedelf P. Tupas
EXPANDING their pool of players for the AFF Suzuki Cup late this year, the Philippine Azkals will parade a new-look side against Australian club Perth Glory FC when they clash Tuesday at Quirino Stadium in Vigan.
Azkals coach Thomas Dooley, who is in the United States to attend to personal matters, has tasked chief deputy Aris Caslib to call the shots for the team that is using the match as part of its preparation for the Suzuki Cup in November.
Caslib has called up the likes of Jim Ashley Flores and Fitch Arboleda of Stallion, Shirmar Felongco of Kaya, Camelo Tacusalme of JP Voltes and Jess Melliza of Green Archers United.
“The general framework of the game is to test some new players, especially those who were part of the U-23 team before,” said Caslib, who watched Global hold Perth to a scoreless draw in a friendly last night at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
“We wanted to have all the players, but with the situation now, we just have to make do with the best players available.”
“We’re excited to see the new players,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami.
With the match not falling on the Fifa international window, clubs are not compelled to release players to the national team for the game against Perth.
Ceres-La Salle decided not to release Stephan Schrock, Manny Ott, Martin Steuble and Patrick Reichelt as the players recover from a gruelling first round campaign in the United Football League.
The holdovers from the squad that beat North Korea last March are James Younghusband, Simone Rota, Miguel Tanton, Misagh Bahadoran, Nick O’Donnell, Dennis Villanueva and OJ Clarino.
Phil Younghusband is expected to return to national team duty for the first time since the clash against Bahrain in October last year.

Ex-Azkals get reunion project with ex-coach as UFL All-Stars named
By Ivan Saldajeno
MAKATI--At least for one night, some of the members of the 2010 Azkals Suzuki Cup team that started the current revolution in the Philippine football scene will play together again.
The UFL revealed its All-Star team that will take on A-League outfit Perth Glory on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
In the press conference of the UFL All-Star Game on Tuesday night at The Beacon, Kaya's Aly Borromeo, Global's Jerry Barbaso, and Loyola's Jason De Jong, who were part of the 2010 Azkals that stunned Southeast Asia by making the semifinals of the region's most prestigious football tournament, were named to the UFL All-Stars that will be coached by Loyola mentor Simon McMenemy, who happened to be the coach of the 2010 Azkals squad that began their transformation from minnows into ASEAN football powerhouse.
Joining the four at the All-Star team are Stallion's Fitch Arboleda, Joshua Beloya, and Balut Doctora, Loyola's Kouichi Belgira, Daniel Gadia, Tahj Minniecon, and Jinggoy Valmayor, Kaya's Louis Clark, Shirmar Felongco, Robert Mendy, and Woody Ugarte, Voltes' Yu Hoshide and Masaki Yanagawa, and Global's Nick O'Donnell.
The match, scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff, will headline the UFL All-Star Saturday, which will also feature similar events from last year like a battle between Filipino players and foreign players and a fun game between 11 players from the seniors division and 100 players from the youth leagues.
For the part of Perth, the UFL All-Star Game will be the second of a three-game tuneup series in the Philippines which will kick off on Wednesday as they face Global at 3:30 p.m. at the said venue.
The said preseason tour culminates with a match on July 26 against the Azkals at the new Quirino Stadium in Vigan.
Azkals, UFL sides clash with Aussie League club
By: Cedelf P. Tupas
AUSTRALIAN League club Perth Glory arrived in Manila yesterday for a pre-season training camp highlighted by a friendly match with the Philippine Azkals on Tuesday at Quirino Stadium in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Glory kicks off a three-game swing in the country with a friendly against United Football League powerhouse Global FC at 3:30 p.m. today at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
While Glory is preparing for a hard grind back in the A-League, the Azkals also need tuneup matches as they prepare to host the AFF Suzuki Cup in December at Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan.
The Aussie club will also play against a UFL All-Star team on Saturday as part of the league’s all-star festivities. The Philippines against Rest of the World game will serve as the curtainraiser for the UFL All Stars-Perth Glory match.
Bannered by former Australian national and youth team standouts, Glory finished fifth in last season’s A-League.

Palami upbeat despite Azkals drop in FIFA rankings
by JAELLE NEVIN REYES
Philippine Azkals manager Dan Palami remains optimistic despite the national football team’s drop in FIFA world rankings.
The Azkals, No.115 in May, dropped to No.120 in June, then fell 15 notches to No.135 in the latest list released on July 14.
According to Palami, Azklas’ drop in FIFA rankings is the result of lack of friendlies that his squad can participate in. He explained that it does not mean that the quality of the Azkals’ game has deteriorated.
“That’s what happens if you don’t have friendly matches but it doesn’t mean that we have dropped in our performance,” he said.
Palami added that they are planning to play more games in the upcoming international friendly windows and hinted that they will be taking on higher ranked squads.
“We’ll try to rectify that by having a couple of friendlies just before Suzuki Cup. It would be a good preparation and good for our rankings as well,” Palami said.
Only two matches, both against Kyrgyzstan later this year, have been confirmed as part of the team’s preparations for the Suzuki Cup to be held in the country.
Palami said that head coach Thomas Dooley wants the Azkals to face tougher opponents in their next games to gauge the team’s progress.
“The coach prefers that we play teams that are above us in rankings. We get better exposure if we play against those teams and at the same time, if we win, we get better points for the rankings,” Palami stressed.
The Azkals are slated to play against Australian Perth Glory FC at the newly renovated Quirino Stadium in Bantay, Ilocos Sur on July 26.
However, Dooley will not be at the helm but assistant coach and Philippine Football Federation Technical Director Aris Caslib, “He [Dooley] won’t be here against Perth. Coach Caslib will be coaching the team in the game in Ilocos,” said Palami.
Palami added that they would field new players in the match against Australia as the Azkals coaching staff is still awaiting response from different clubs if they would load their players to the national team.

Ceres salvage draw against Global
Ceres-La Salle FC overcame a two goal deficit to salvage a 3-3 draw against league leaders Global FC last July 17 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Busmen had a chance in the first minute when Adrian Gallardo bursted into the box giving a backheel pass to Patrick Reichelt whose shot was covered by the defense. It was Global who opened the scoring in the match when Bahadoran laid off to Ivan Petrovic who blasted the ball to the roof of the net in the 13th minute.
Both teams were pushing hard in the first twenty which resilted to Bienvenido Marañon heading a ball over the crossbar and Misagh Bahadoran forcing a one on one with Casas that was foiled by the Ceres defense. Bahadoran was again dangerous in the 19th minute with his 30-yard free kick went slightly over the bar. Global had the better chances while Ceres was struggling to find form in the early going.
Global would make it 2-0 after 35 minutes when Bahadoran found some space at the top of the box ad rifled in a shot past a full-stretched Louie Michael Casas. The Dan Palami-backed squad almost made it 3-0 when Amani Aguinaldo’s cheeky back heel in front of goal was blocked by the defense and the ensuing rebound by Serge Kaole went way over the bar.
The Bacolod squad pushed for goals resulting to plenty of chances in the remaining minutes. Martin Steuble floated a ball in the box which was punched out by Patrick Deyto with Manny Ott slicing a volley attempt from afar. In the 30th minute, Global defender Jerry Barbaso was called for handball in the edge of the box but the free kick from Ott was off target. Ott again had a chance minutes later when he shot low from 20 yards but Deyto was there to collect.
Controversy erupted in the 40th minute when Marañon was brought down by Deyto in the box in a one-on-one but referee Krizmark Nañola waved it off for a corner. Marañon was furious of the non-call and was given a yellow card for dissent. The resulting corner saw Adrian Gallardo glancing-in a header which hit the crossbar. It didn’t take long until Ceres’ persistence was rewarded. Gallardo chased a long ball behind the Global defense and slotting in a right footed shot past Deyto who never conceded since the start of the league.
Reichelt had a chance to equalize in injury time, running past defenders and releasing a shot just before he was leveled by Deyto. The ball went a foot wide from the post and no penalty was given for the reckless challenge. Ceres would have a final chance just before halftime when Reichelt issued a cross in but Marañon skied his shot in front of goal. The half would end with Global leading 2-1.
The Negros Occidental squad started the half with urgency which led to multiple chances. Just after the restart, Reichelt issued a low cross to Ott whose shot was over the bar. Orman Okunaiya snuck a through ball to Reichelt, who beat his defender and brandished a shot from close range. Deyto was again there for the save. A good passing combination in the 52nd minute was created by Ceres but the final header of Gallardo was just wide.
Global unleashed a counter-attack in the hour mark with substitute Omid Nazari breaking through the flanks and issuing a cross to Minegishi on the other side. Jason Sabio would get a piece of the ball which went towards Casas who tapped it away. Minegishi was quick to react, collecting the free ball and scoring Global’s third for the 3-1 lead.
Nazari almost made it four for Global when his free kick from twenty-five yards hit the crossbar in the 71st minute. Ceres got their groove back minutes later when Gallardo took a shot from the edge of the box which went past Deyto and trimming the lead. Marañon made a brilliant effort after the restart when he shook off his defender and released a quick shot to score the equalizer in the 78th.
The Busmen had a golden chance minutes later when substitute Stephan Shröck issued a lovely pass which beat the defenders and allowed Marañon a 1v1 chance against Deyto. The Spanish player’s shot was however saved by Deyto who was going in one direction but recovered to collar the ball in the reverse side. Global would have another chance in extra but their free kick again hit the crossbar which kept the score level till the end.
“We knew their game plan is always counter attack. I think all-in-all, if we watch the video of the game, we played more good football. But the danger is always their fast players. They have quick counter attacks, everybody runs for their counterattacks. We knew about that that’s why we were disappointed especially the two goals were counterattack goals. Maybe well face each other again at the end of the league. If the both of us win all our games it will be the decider,” said Ceres Club Director Ali Go.
“Global is always a hard game. They give everything versus Ceres. You’ll probably see them at their best games with us. At the same time always with global, we make silly mistakes that is converted to goals. I think that’s the bottomline of the story. Kudos to the boys 3-1 down (but) never gave up. They played good and we’ll rest for this two weeks and prepare for this second round,” The Ceres Director added.
Global is still on top with 31 points followed by Ceres with 28 points. The UFL second round will start on August and will be completed by October.
