From the pool that includes the Cebuanas, 18 will be selected to the team that will be coached by Joyce Landagan of the PFF for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U14 Girls Regional Championships slated May 31 to June 5.

Ateneo beats La Salle in penalty shootout, reaches UAAP football final vs UP

UNCERTAIN of making it to the Final Four a week ago, Ateneo is now a win away from regaining the UAAP Season 78 men's football championship.
Carlo Liay and goalkeeper JP Oracion were the men of the match as the Blue Eagles overcame De La Salle in the penalty shootout, 5-4, after a 1-1 standoff in 120 minutes of play in their Final Four matchup Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Liay, a former Rookie of the Year winner, gave Ateneo the lead, 5-4, and Oracion, a substitute late in extra time, had a brilliant save on Jose Montelibano, which sent their fierce rivals Green Archers packing.
Up next for Ateneo is the University of the Philippines, who blanked University of Santo Tomas, 3-0, in the other semis pairing, in the one-game final at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Malate venue.
It will be the first Finals meeting between the two Katipunan rivals since 2012-13 season, when the Eagles swept the Fighting Maroons in two games, both decided via penalties.
“UP is organized in defending and attacking. We need to play our best on Thursday,” said coach JP Merida, who was a part of the Ateneo squad that won a three-peat from 2004-06.
The Eagles are gunning for their seventh title, while the Maroons are seeking their 17th championship, but their first since 2011-12 season.
A victory will be very sweet for Ateneo, which a week ago was on the ropes and was only able to make it to the semifinals after UP ousted and dethroned Far Eastern University on the final elimination matchday.
For De La Salle, coach Hans Smit will wait another year to end a title drought that's lasted almost two decades.
The Maroons, meanwhile, are eyeing a championship double as their women’s team play the Lady Archers in the winner-take-all finale – the last sport to be played for Season 78 – also on Thursday.

Ceres eyes AFC Cup home turf

By:

HAVING made history as the first Filipino club to advance to the knockout stage of the AFC Cup, Ceres-La Salle has set its sights on clinching home field advantage in the Round of 16 of the continental tournament.
The Bacolod-based side gained a precious point after a scoreless draw against Selangor of Malaysiain their Group E clash at Selayang Municipal Stadium just outside Kuala Lumpur.
But the 2015 UFL champions are far from satisfied from just reaching the next round as a victory against Sheikh Jamal on May 10 at Panaad Stadium will give the Bacolod club top spot in Group E that also guarantees homefield advantage in the one-game playoff for a quarterfinal spot.

“We will finish this group strong,” said Ceres coach Franklin Muescan. “We’re going to bring an exciting match on May 10.”
Just like their first meeting last February that ended in a 2-2 stalemate at Panaad Stadium, there was little to separate Ceres and Selangor as they failed to cash in on their chances particularly in the second half when the match finally came to life.
But the result raised the Bacolod-based side’s tally to nine points from five matches, one ahead of Selangor.
Ceres’ bid to reach the next round was aided by Sheikh Jamal’s 2-3 upset of Tampines Rovers of Singapore in the earlier kickoff.
“I salute the boys,” Muescan said. “The determination was there. It’s a historic event for Philippine football.”
Formed in 2012, Ceres has taken the UFL by storm, winning the FA League Cup in 2012 and the league last season.

Ceres targets another win vs. Selangor

Members of the Ceres- La Salle FC are now in Malaysia for tomorrow's away game against Selangor FA in Group E of the AFC Cup Qualifiers. Game time is set at 8:45 p.m. in Selayang Stadium.
On top of their group with eight points after a rousing 2-1 home victory at the Panaad Stadium over the visiting Tampines Rovers of Singapore two weeks ago, the busmen are in for a tough match as Selangor is expected to go all out to secure a win for the much-need three points.
Tied in the second spot with seven points each, a win for Selangor will greatly improve their chances to advance into the round of 16. Tampines will be playing against winless Sheik Jamal Dhanmondi of Bangladesh in the other Group E match tomorrow.
Ceres is coming off a frustrating loss to Global in the UFL Cup final eight days ago, apparently, with the fatigue catching up on the players.
Earlier, head coach Franklin Muescan said that the final match against Global in the UFL will be part of their preparation for the away game against Selangor.
“It will be a good preparation for us to address our shortcomings especially in the midfield,” Muescan said during the news conference after the match against Tampines.
Muescan admitted that only a point separates them from Tampines and Selangor and they need to keep on winning to advance into the knockout stage.
After tomorrow's match against Selangor, Ceres will be coming home to prepare for their last match in the Group Stage, a home game against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi on May 10, 7 p.m. at the Panaad Stadium.*NAB

UFL League: Bigger challenge, Fresh Start

Sparks had an up and down performance during the UFL Cup but the squad is getting ready to bounce back in the upcoming league. A lot of players are returning for the Sparks including UAAP players from the club’s UP contingent. Daniel Gadia, who featured in the final against JP Voltes, will finish with university commitments by the end of the month, and the new Philippine National Team recruit will be big boost heading into the next challenge.
“With players coming back, and us getting more and more confident, I think it’s kind of ominous for other teams,” said McMenemy.
McMenemy also added that some changes might happen to the squad leading into the league and the team is looking forward to a fresh start and to be a title contender. He iterated it might be difficult, but certainly not impossible.
Curt Dizon, who is looking to cement more regular playing time, added that the Sparks will be concentrating more on shoring up the defense in their upcoming games.
“Almost every game we concede a goal but, last two games that we were out we haven’t been conceding. Still, (we wont’t be) giving team opportunities to hit us,” said Dizon.
“We’ve got a lot to work on and the league will be starting soon and we’ll be ready for it,” Dizon added.
The UFL League is currently scheduled to begin on April 30. Full details to be announced soon.

Dooley to remain Azkals coach for next 2 years

Philippine national football team boss Dan Palami confirmed that head coach Thomas Dooley would be extending his stay with the squad for another two years.
According to Palami, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) together with the team’s management has been delighted with the performance of the Azkals under Dooley.

“I think the Philippine Football Federation as well as the management of the Azkals is certainly impressed with what he has done for Philippine football and for the national team,” Palami told GMA News Online.
“That is the reason why we have decided to extend his contract for another two years so that he can lead us in the Asian Cup qualifiers,” he added.
However, Palami said they are still accomplishing some paperwork before finalizing Dooley's new contract.
“All the other conditions remain the same. We are just working on the documents to be signed but in principle and as far as we are all concerned, the show goes on,” he said.
Dooley, former captain and assistant coach of the US soccer team, was appointed head coach of the Azkals in February 2014 vice Hans Michael Weiss.
Palami said it was an easy decision for them to extend Dooley's contract after he steered the Azkals to a notable performance in the international stage.
Dooley recently took the Azkals to a third place finish in the second round of the joint 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2018 Asian Cup qualifiers where the Nationals registered a record of three wins, a draw and four losses including an impressive final game win against North Korea, 3-2, which secured their ticket for the next round of the Asian Cup qualifiers.
It was during Dooley's watch when the Philippines recorded their highest ever standing at 116 in the FIFA World Rankings for the month of April.

Meanwhile, Palami said the Azkals will have two international friendlies against Syria and Kyrgyzstan as part of their preparations for the upcoming Suzuki Cup.
“In June, we have a friendly in Bacolod and then we go to Kyrgyzstan. Hopefully, Syria does not cancel it just like they cancelled their friendly against Vietnam but we are hoping that it will push through. Otherwise, we will continue to look for opponents,” he concluded. — APG, GMA News

UP ends FEU's reign in UAAP men's football

MANILA, Philippines – Rookie Kyle Magdato struck late in the first half as University of the Philippines ended Far Eastern University's two-year reign with a 1-0 victory Thursday in the UAAP Season 78 men's football tournament at the Moro Lorenzo Field.
After Feb Baya's cross was punched away by Tamaraws keeper Ray Joyel, Magdato was there for the rebound late in the first half which turned out to be the winning moment for the Fighting Maroons.
With 30 points, UP secured the top ranking, while giving University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo a free ride in the semifinals set on April 28 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Parading with a young crew which has been steady all-season long, the Maroons were able to advance in the Final Four despite losing ace striker Jinggoy Valmayor to graduation.
"Of course, Jinggoy (Valmayor) has been very instrumental part of our campaign in the last five years. He has scoring goals for us. But I think this group, in terms of work ethic, in terms of fight and stability, it is as strong as it gets. Per position, we covered everything," said coach Anto Gonzales, who is seeking to steer UP back on top after three seasons.
The Maroons also achieved a clean sheet for the sixth straight match, truly living to their lofty billing as the league's best defensive side.

"That is always been our philosophy, everything starts with defense. Our goals haven't really come really very often sa amin. Pero in terms of controlling the game and securing the backline, nandoon kami," said Gonzales.
It was a sorry exit for FEU, which will miss the Final Four for the first time since 2012 after finishing fifth with 24 points.
The Tamaraws crumbled in the second round, as coach Kim Chul Su's side truly felt the absence of injured midfielder Arnel Amita, while rookie striker Rico Andes, the league's leading goalscorer in the first round who was marked in the crucial stretch of the season.
FEU's elimination in men's play came a few days after its women's squad was also dethroned.

Dooley stays Azkals coach for another two years

By:

THOMAS Dooley has agreed in principle to a two-year deal to stay on as coach of the Philippine Azkals, who will be gunning for a first AFF Suzuki Cup title when the country hosts the tournament in November.
Dooley, who watched the United Football League Cup finals won by Global FC at the expense of Ceres-La Salle at Rizal Memorial Stadium last Saturday, said his contract extension will be finalized by the Philippine Football Federation this week.
“We’ve had initial discussions and I’m staying for two more years,” said Dooley, who steered the Azkals to the biggest upset in history last month when they stunned North Korea, 3-2.

“I always said that I wanted to stay so that’s why it was easy to come together and talk.”
Dooley earned raves for steering the Azkals to impressive matches, particularly against stronger sides like Uzbekistan and Bahrain in the World Cup Qualifying.
The Azkals also reached their highest ranking of No. 114 this month, regaining the top ranking among Southeast Asian countries.
But the Philippine team also suffered some stinging setbacks under his reign, including the home loss to Yemen and in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup final against Palestine in the Maldives.
Dooley said the Azkals are slated to play Syria, China and Kyrgyzstan during the international window this year, before they plunge into action in the AFF Suzuki Cup, which the country is hosting for the first time.
The coach said that they are targeting a first finals appearance in the Suzuki Cup, after three straight semifinal finishes, on top of qualification for the 2017 AFC Asian Cup.

Dooley retained as Azkals coach

Coach Thomas Dooley will still be at the helm as the Philippine Azkals shoot for a breakthrough in the 2016 Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup and the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
Dooley, whose contract expired last month, said talks with the Philippine Football Federation for an extension have been positive and they have agreed in principle to continue working together.
“I’m staying,” Dooley said Saturday night after the UFL Cup finals between Global FC and Ceres.
“I always said I want to stay and I wouldn’t believe that the federation doesn’t want to continue to work with me. So that’s why it was maybe easy to get together and talk and agree on two more years,” he added.
Dooley took over in Feb. 2014, steering Phl XI to a silver medal in the AFC Challenge Cup and a semifinal appearance in Suzuki Cup. After his initial one-year deal, he was given an extension covering the second-round campaign of the joint World Cup-Asian Cup qualifying tournament, which ended last March.

The next targets have been set.

“Going to the Suzuki Cup final and winning the Suzuki Cup, that obviously would be nice. Then qualifying for the Asian Cup,” said Dooley.

NCR cops secondary boys football title in heated Palaro final

NCR plays with 9 men in the second half as police intervene twice after repeated altercations in the secondary boys football final against Central Visayas at the 2016 Palarong Pambansa
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Third time's the charm for National Capital Region after they finally captured the secondary boys football title by edging the Central Visayas, 2-1, in a heated finals clash in the 2016 Palarong Pambansa on Saturday, April 16 at the BU-Albay Sports and Tourism Complex football field here.
NCR, made up of booters from 6-time UAAP champions Far Eastern University, rebounded from back-to-back years of losing to Mimaropa and Western Visayas since 2014.
The intense match was mired by a fracas in the second half that resulted in the ejection of two NCR players, Ealhwine Jehoiakim Dalam and Darryl Aban, as well as Central Visayas goalkeeper Joseph Kei Ceniza.
It did not help that the referees missed several calls that served to further fuel the intensity between the teams.
Repeated altercations
A few minutes after the start of the second half, the game was interrupted for about 5 minutes when NCR coach Kim Chul Su vehemently demanded the referee call a foul on a Central Visayas player.
The referee decided to eject the coach from the match but he refused to leave the pitch even when the police were called in to interfere. The referee eventually decided to overturn his decision and the game restarted.
The match was once again interrupted for more than 10 minutes when another commotion took place, this time involving the players.
While trying to save a goal, Central Visayas goalkeeper Ceniza got entangled with NCR’s Keith Absalon, who had held on to Ceniza's foot while falling to the ground.
Ceniza tried to pull his foot free, and it must have seemed that he was trying to kick the fallen NCR player as teammate, Aban, immediately reacted by punching Ceniza.
“I didn’t feel good. I need that important player [Absalon]. He is a good striker,” said Kim Chul Su.
Ceniza was then pulled to the side by John Clyde Vitualla in an effort to stop the situation from escalating but NCR players pursued Central Visayas team members and a chase ensued. Police eventually had to intervene.
The spectators also got into an altercation of their own and things would have also escalated if the police had not gone up to intervene.
The game eventually went underway but it was halted again after tournament officials decided to eject 3 players leaving NCR with a 9-man lineup on the pitch as Ceniza was replaced by Jessie Semblante.
Tight contest
Both teams started hot with NCR immediately going for the attack with current UAAP Best Striker and Best Midfielder Chester Gio Pabualan coming close to scoring twice in the early minutes.
However goal attempts were repeatedly foiled by the tight defense employed by Central Visayas, whose team is made up of players from Don Bosco Technology Center, Paref Springdale, Don Bosco Boys Home and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation).
Ryan James Haosen led Central Visayas' attack until team captain Glen Thomas Ceniza eventually found the back of the net when he converted a penalty in the 12th minute as a result of a foul committed on Ouano, who was tackled hard from the back.
NCR tried to level the match via Aban but failed when he figured in a head-on collision against Ceniza, who momentarily laid on the ground holding on to his head.
NCR scored the equalizer in the 25th minute via Dalam, capitalizing on the lapse of Central Visayas defender Erich Rafael Orale who tried to clear out a cross from Aban from the left flank.
Instead, Orale headed the ball straight to Dalam, who was at the center and wasted no time to knock in a goal Ceniza failed to save.
NCR scored their winning goal courtesy of Christian Bacara after he found an opening in the Central Visayas defense with 3 minutes remaining in the match.
The first half ended 2-1 in favor of NCR and neither side scored another goal in the second half.
Special awards
NCR’s Absalon was named the Most Valuable Player as well as Best Midfielder.
Central Visayas’ Orale was named as Best Defender, while Bicol Region’s own Jovan Marfiga was named as Best Striker.
The Best Goalkeeper was copped by Western Visayas’ Ashley Bernales while Caraga was given the Best Fair Play award.
Special awardees received P2,000 worth of Coca Cola products aside from the cash incentives handed by the Department of Education– with reports from Caleb Joshua Pacleta/Rappler

Redemption complete as Global FC overwhelms Ceres-La Salle to rule UFL Cup

GLOBAL FC earned redemption as it overwhelmed Ceres-La Salle, 3-1, to rule the United Football League Cup on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The former league and Cup champions banked on an early two-goal lead, before pouncing on a Ceres side in disarray after a controversial non-call in the second half to herald their return to the top after getting suspended in the last Cup due to a player eligibility issue.
Misagh Bahadoran struck a brace, while Matt Hartmann added a goal for Global, which clinched a berth in the 2017 Asian Football Confederation Cup after frustrating a squad that’s already making waves in this year’s edition of the second-tier club competition in the continent.
“Especially against a strong team like Ceres, who’s plying their trade in Asia, to beat them here domestically is something that we’re proud of,” team owner Dan Palami said. “We are back with the silverware – just one of two we intend to win this year.”
“When you finally win something, it feels doubly special,” the Global boss added after his team claimed its first trophy after coming up empty handed last year, likewise its first UFL Cup conquest since 2010, tying Philippine Air Force with two titles.
Global pounced on a weary Ceres side that was playing in its third match in two weeks, going two goals ahead in the first 24 minutes of the match, while putting up a resolute defensive stand that frustrated the Busmen.
The match, however, was marred by a questionable non-call in the second half when Global left-back Daisuke Sato appeared to have escaped a handball infraction after blocking Patrick Reichelt’s attempt with his hand.
With Ceres still arguing, Global capitalized as Bahadoran caught the opponent’s defense napping to strike again and give his team a three-goal lead to eventually be receive the Golden Ball award.
A livid Ceres coach Ali Go was sent off after due to continuous complaining, but that motivated Ceres as Nate Burkey pulled a goal back, only to see their comeback fall short.
“You can see the quality (of Ceres),” Global coach Leigh Manson said. “If you relax for a minute, they’ve got the potential to score, so for us to…dominate the first half, (that says a lot).”
“But they came and you’ve got to tip your hats off to them because we were hanging on a little bit in the middle period of the second half, but we managed to see out the game,” the Scottish mentor added.

NIR elementary boys in football Final Four

Negros Island Region overcame a second-half scare to advance to today's
elementary football semifinals in the Palarong Pambansa in Albay.
The NIR XI are joined in the Final Four by usual football forces Western Vsayas, Davao and National Capital Region.
The Negrense boys will see action against Davao at 7 a.m., after nipping Northern Mindanao, 4-3, in their quarterfinal game with the other match pitting defending champion NCR and last year's silver medalist Western Visayas.
NIR started strong with a 2-0 advantage at halftime from markers by STI-West Negrso University pupil Francis Jude Madamecilla on the 12th minute and Bosconian Juan Carlos Rodriguez, who booted in the first of his two goals on the 18th.
Northern Mindanao bounced back early in the second half and equalized the score within three minutes -- on the 39th and 41st -- and took the lead nine minutes later following an own goal in the struggle for ball possession.
Lasallian Joshua John Limco, however, found a way to equalize the score a minute later with Rodriguez sealing the squeaker win on a penalty kick on the 56th.
Assistant Coach Noriel Revilla said NCR, which finished behind NIR in Group A, kept its title-retention bid hopes with a win over Group D leader, Bicol, while Western Visayas, which finished No. 2 in Group C, gets the change to avenge its elimination-round loss to Davao after warding off Group B topnotcher Soccksargen.
Davao ousted Group B runner-up Zamboanga.
The NIR high school boys' team failed to make it to the quarterfinals from its 2-1-1 win-loss-draw card.
In futsal, a high school girls' demonstratio sport, NIR, powered by players from San Carlos City, also advanced to the semifinals via a 6-1 drubbing of Soccksargen yesterday after edging Davao. 4-3, in their final qualifying match to top their bracket on Wednesday.
They will also face Davao in the semis after the Mindanao players outclassed Central Visayas in their quarterfinal match.
Coach Frances Roy Barcuma said Lyka Teves and Tenelyn Otom led the San Carlos girls with two goals each while Tejanee Isulat and Christine Anares scored one apiece.* AVDC
