Loyola Meralco coach says slumping UFL needs to regain the Spark against Kaya FC
By Karlo Sacamos
A WEARY Loyola Meralco seeks to get back on the winning track as it clashes with Kaya FC in a marquee matchup in the United Football League on Tuesday at the Emperador Stadium.
It only took two straight disappointing results — a 1-2 loss against Green Archers United and a 1-1 draw against Stallion FC — for the Sparks to lose not just their grip on the top spot in the nine-team standings, but also their aura of invincibility.
With the long minutes of their starters seemingly taking its toll, the men in orange try to dig deep and find a way to prevail in another stern test for their third-running side.
“We just really need to rest and refresh so that we could come in with a different mentality,” Sparks coach Vince Santos said after the stalemate against the Stallions last Thursday.
Not only are they trying to regain the lead they surrendered to streaking Global FC, but the Sparks are also trying to avoid Kaya from catching up.
The Sparks are just ahead of Kaya by three points and the result of their 7:30 p.m. second-round encounter will have a huge impact on the title race.
Kaya, fresh from a 4-2 win over Socceroo, halted Loyola’s seven-game winning run in the first round when it held the high-scoring Sparks to a goalless draw last February 18.
The fifth-running Archers hope to sustain their resurgence as they take on Pachanga earlier at 5:15 p.m.

Ceres-USLS lands tough President’s Cup bracket
By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines — National champion Ceres-La Salle has home-field advantage in the AFC President’s Cup, but will have its hands full against what is considered the strongest bracket of the tournament scheduled May 6 to 10 at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
Standing in the way of the Bacolod side in Group B are North Korea’s Rimyongsu, Turkmenistan’s HTTU Ashgabat and Chinese Taipei’s Tatung.
Although a first timer in the tournament, the North Korean side boasts at least six national team players, while the Turkmen are also expected to field a formidable squad that could be composed of AFC Challenge Cup-bound players.
Only two teams will advance to the final round and Ceres needs to beat at least two of the powerhouse sides to stand a chance of progressing in the tournament for clubs in emerging football nations in the continent.
Global represented the country last year but it failed to get past the group stage in Cebu.
“It’s a tough group and we’re hoping that the crowd will help the team pull off upsets,” said Ceres coach Ali Go, whose side currently leads the second division of the United Football League.
“This is a great chance to make the country proud and we will make sure we have a strong and competitive team for the tournament,” said Ceres owner Leorey Yanson.
Ceres, which earned the right to represent the country after winning the Smart Club Championship last year, has strengthened its lineup by signing national players Carli de Murga, Patrick Reichelt and Jason Sabio.
Go said the club has also reached out to Juani Guirado in the hope of getting his services for the tournament.
The two other groups in the President’s Cup will be playing in Sri Lanka and Mongolia, respectively.

UFL: Kaya bucks tentative first half, beats Socceroo 4-2
BY MYKE MIRAVITE
MANILA, Philippines - After letting in two goals in the first 45 minutes, Kaya FC returned in the second half with their title aspirations in mind as they trumped Team Socceroo FC, 4-2, in the 2014 United Football League on Saturday, March 29 at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig City.
Four players found the back of the net for Kaya tonight as they improved to a 9-3-3 slate midway into the league competition, racking up their points to a third-best 30 with nine more games left in the calendar.
More importantly, though, the win brings David Perkovic's side back into this season's championship discussions after pulling through to within four points from league-leaders Global FC in the table.
Kaya FC looked bright in the early goings as Christian Ayew only took six minutes to open the scoring, banking in Richard Greer's neatly-threaded cross for 1-nil.
Team Socceroo, however, made Andrew Liauw rue his defensive blunder less than ten minutes later as Lee Jeong Woo displayed nerves of steel from the penalty spot, scoring the equalizer 13 minutes into the game.
Pumped up by their good start against the streaking Kaya, the Korean doubled his production moments before the break when he curled in a left-footer past Nick O'Donnell in the 39th, putting Socceroo up by 2-1.
Not to be outdone, Kaya FC halted Team Socceroo's celebration as Anton del Rosario scored off a wonderful diving header deep into the first half's injury time, restoring parity at the break.
Kaya then flexed their muscles on both ends of the pitch as they dominated Socceroo in the second half with Pablo Rodriguez Aracil reclaiming the lead for the fan-favorites, 57 minutes into the night.
Kenshiro Daniels promptly wrapped up the match when he scored Kaya's fourth goal in the 73rd, gently rolling the ball into the back of the net for 4-2.
The win also cut second-place Loyola Meralco's lead to just three points while Socceroo drops to 2-3-10 to remain at the eighth position in the standings.
Kaya and Loyola will figure in an all-important battle on April 1 that could make or break either squad's title hopes. Socceroo, on the other hand, will try to bounce back on April 5 against Pachanga - Diliman. -Rappler.com
Global FC solidifies top spot after 7-0 whipping of Pasargad
BY MYKE MIRAVITE
MANILA, Philippines - Global FC cemented themselves on the number one spot as they made mincemeat of Pasargad, 7-nil, in the 2014 United Football League, March 29, at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig City.
Showing no mercy for the bottom-dwellers, the league-leaders were all-business tonight with Milad Behgandom scoring a hat trick to help tow Global to 37 points, four points clear of Loyola Meralco which they unseated from the top spot last week.
Even as Stallion awaits them in their next outing, Global will likely be holding onto the top of the table for a little while more as Loyola will have a tough challenge ahead, with the resurgent Kaya FC planning to overtake them for the number 2 spot on April 1.
After coming off the bench in their last few games, Behgandom quickly made his presence felt when he started for Global tonight, scoring what could be the fastest goal the UFL has seen, putting his squad 1-nil up just 10 seconds after kickoff.
Mark Hartmann then showcased his sniping prowess when he made it 2-nil in the 9th minute with a long-ranged effort from about 18 yards out.
Behgandom wasted no time when he struck in twice within a span of five minutes, scoring his second in the 15th before completing his hat trick 20 minutes into the game.
Hartmann came close to doubling his production but his 31st minute shot was blocked by the keeper. Daisuke Sato, however, was at the right place at the right time as he drilled in the rebound for Global's fifth goal of the night.
Getting bored by Pasargad's lackluster attacking, Charles Pettys went all the way up from the backline and immediately got rewarded when his 43rd minute attempt from inside the box looped beyond the keeper and went into the net for 6-0.
With a lot of cushion separating them from Pasargad, coach Leigh Manson shuffled his lineup after the break but Global remained in control for most of the match with Jeffrey Christiaens wrapping his squad's masterful 7-0 thumping of PSG with a 67th minute goal.
Global improves to 12-1-2 while Pasargad's misery continue, dropping to a league worst 1-1-11 record with -40 goal difference midway into the season.
Loyola and Kaya will figure in an all-important battle on April 1 first before Global face the reigning league champions on April 3. - Rappler.com
