Global victorious in the 2013 Kia Cup

Global were crowned winners in the 2013 Kia Cup Open Division held at the Alabang Country Club, Saturday.

Global swept the group stages of the tournament, winning over Phil. Air Force B, Nomads A, Iligan Archangels and Greenstars FC, to advance to the knockout stages.

In the quarterfinals, Global needed a late goal from Izo El-Habbib to force a penalty shootout with Phil. Air Force A. Roland Sadia produced a nice save in the shootout to send Global to the semis.

Mark Hartmann scored two goals and Marwin Angeles contributed another against DLSU A in the semifinals. The match ended at 4-2 to book Global a place in the final.

The final match also ended in a penalty shootout against Green Archers United after Floriano Pasilan scored first in the first half before El-Habbib equalized in the 2nd half.

Sadia saved 2 penalty kicks in the shootout to give Global it's first Kia Cup Open Divison title.

El-Habbib also won the Most Valuable Player award of the Open Division.

UFL : Nomads to play in Div 2 ?

Nomads seem to be playing in Div 2 this season . They have problems with the new UFL rule about max 5 foreigners on the team and will be playing in Div 2 where they are exempted from the foreign cap rule.

Manila Jeepney Fc a new club wanted to take over Nomads spot in Div 1 , but tweeted to Filipinofootball today that they probably will be playing in div 2.

One spot is available for Div 1 if these news are correct. Union Int Manila or Air Force could get that spot ?

UFL preseason tournament

The Philippine national Under-23 men’s football team will strut its wares against the country’s top football clubs when it competes in the preseason tournament of the United Football League slated on Sunday.
The UFL included the U-23 Azkals in the competition to help them prepare for their possible stint in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games, which remains uncertain after Philippine sports officials decided to limit the number of the country’s delegation in protest of host Myanmar’s “unfair” exclusion of some sports.
“Let this be our expression of our support to our U23 Azkals. May their inclusion in the tournament be a big morale booster for the team!” wrote UFL Head of Football Operations Ritchie Gannaban in a letter addressed to the Philippine Football Federation.
The U-23 Azkals feature some of the most promising footballers in the country such as Joshua Beloya of Ceres FC, Mark Hartmann of the Loyola Meralco Sparks and Patrick Deyto of Green Archers United Globe.
The UFL has yet to announce rules about U-23 Azkals members who will face their mother clubs during the tournament.
The UFL preseason tournament will run until October 6 at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.

UFL: Kaya signs former Pasargad striker , international recruits to boost lineup

Kaya FC has signed a number of players in its bid to contend for the title in the upcoming United Football League season.
Among the club’s new recruits is Emmanuel Mbata, one of the league’s most potent strikers after leading Pasargad FC last year with 10 goals. His inclusion would also help the team’s struggles on the offensive end, with him forming a deadly attacking duo with promising striker OJ Porteria.
Also joining Kaya is former Stallion Sta.Lucia player Jovin Bedic and Danilo De Jong, brother of national team player Jason De Jong.
Kaya also lured a couple of players abroad such as Andrew Liauw from Holland, Mati Alvarez from Argentina and Scott Baginski from Australia.
Kaya coach David Perkovic hopes that the new signings will help them surpass their performance last season, where the team, which was picked as one of the favorites for the League crown, only managed to finish fourth place.
“I definitely think this is a squad that will represent top football Kaya wants to play,” Perkovic said. “We’ve got the pieces here which will play good football.”
Apart from the new signings, Kaya will still be led by veterans Anton del Rosario and Chris Greatwich, among others.

Men’s Football left out, but still hoping

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is still not convinced that football’s under-23 men’s team is good enough for the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar in December after the team was left out in the list of competitors for the biennial meet.
POC chairman Tom Carrasco said yesterday that while the POC has approved the participation of the women’s football team also known as the Malditas, their men’s counterparts are on the outside looking in.
“We will look at the composition of their lineup,” said Carrasco, who expects to get an idea of what the roster might look like when the POC meets with a big group of national sports association heads next week.
The POC has so far approved the inclusion of 152 athletes and is on standby whether an additional 100-plus will also be taken in pending the results of their performances in various overseas meets in the coming months.
Myanmar has given all countries until the second week of November to make changes to their respective lineups although the 10-member nations have been requested to come up with their entry-by-name lineup by the second week of September.
The Philippine Football Federation, hoping to boost its team’s chances, had offered to pay for the trip. But the POC appears to be resolute in its policy of sending only medal hopefuls to the meet.
“The only thing that we want is an accreditation (to play in the SEAG),” said PFF president Mariano Araneta, adding that Myanmar is looking forward to having a Philippine men’s team in the event’s most popular sports.
Despite the uncertainty of participation, Araneta said the under-23 team continues its prepration and buildup.
It is slated to play as a guest team in the UFL Cup and will also train in Japan and Bahrain.
In SEAG football, only players 23 years old and under are allowed to play, disqualifying the Azkals, the country’s very competitive football team.
The POC sees no chance for the Philippine team against Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, countries that regularly maintain an active under-23 squad.
But the PFF believes that even without its main men on the lineup, the Azkals- under-23 can bang with them as it has drastically improved the past two years with the infusion of new and fresh talent from the United Football League and collegiate clubs.

In the meantime, Laos paid dearly for not making their opportunities count when they fell to a 1-0 loss to the Philippines. The Philippines, who will be leaving for home early tomorrow morning, made sure that they have at least three points to their name when they struck the only goal in the game off Jeramiah Borlongan late in the second half.

Laos created more than a flurry of chances through the hardwork of Maitee and also Sinthanong Phanvongsa but the Philippines had keeper Michael Asong to count on to deny them

Asong went on to make several crucial saves and with time trickling down and Laos thinking that they will have to settle for the draw, came Borlongan barrelling down from the left in the 88^th minute for a shot to the far post to beat Laos keeper Saymanolinh Paseuth.

With the Philippines satisfied that they have at least picked up the three points, Laos will complete their fixtures against Singapore in two days at the Naypyitaw FC Stadium.

Global readies offer for scoring ace

OUT to strengthen its side for domestic and international tournaments, Global FC is preparing an offer for Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez after the United Football League top scorer said he is no longer under contract with Stallion.
Sanchez, who is scheduled to arrive in Manila from Spain today, is expected to negotiate a deal with the 2011 UFL champions, following the end of his contract with Stallion, which he led to two trophies last season.
Global owner Dan Palami told the Inquirer that a one-year deal is being prepared for Sanchez with an option to extend it another year.
Loaned by Stallion to Global, Sanchez helped propel the UFL powerhouse to the semifinals of the Singapore Cup last month.
“After carefully studying his previous deal, we believe that Rufo is a free agent and that’s why we’re trying to reach out to him for contract negotiations to begin,” said Palami.
Despite pronouncements from Stallion management that he’s still under contract with the team, Sanchez said he is a free agent because his deal with the reigning UFL champions expired last week.
A source close to the player said nobody from Stallion has gotten in touch with the player for a possible return to the squad.
“There’s been no communication from Stallion to Rufo, saying that they want him for another year,” the source said. “If Stallion still has rights over Rufo, then why haven’t they sent him a plane ticket to return to the Philippines.”

A former CF Madrid player, Sanchez scored 18 goals last season for Stallion to claim the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards.

AFF U16: Singapore Keep Up Chase in Group B

NAYPYITAW (25 Aug 2013) – Singapore kept up the chase in Group B of the AFF AYA Bank Under-16 Championship when they sidestepped the Philippines 2-0 in the match that was played this afternoon here at the Wunna Theikdi Stadium.

The win was Singapore’s first following their 1-1 draw against Malaysia two days earlier while the Philippines are facing the exit after conceding their third defeat in a row.

Singapore was all eager at the start of the tie today as they pressed the Philippines hard in search of the early goal. After some sustained pressure, Singapore finally got their first real chance of the game in the 26^th minute but Muhammad Hami Syahin Said totally blasted the ball over even though the Philippines defence was off their line.

Two minutes later, Muhammad Amirul Hakim Onn rocked the crossbar with a thunderous effort before Singapore finally broke the deadlock in the 45^th minute when Muhammad Zulqarnaen Suzliman broke through for a shot which even though Philippines keeper Michael Asong had a hand, still managed to trickle into goal.

With just one goal to their name, Singapore pushed hard into the second half and after crashing the crossbar two more times, they got the second goal that they were looking for, when Muhammad Syukri Mohd Bashir headed home a failed clearance from Asong.

The Philippines gained a real chance to score their first goal of the competition when they were awarded a penalty in the 82^nd minute but unfortunately, Jeremiah Borlongan’s meek attempt failed to beat Singapore custodian Kenji Syed Ali.

“I was expecting a better performance from this team considering that they played in the FAM-Frenz tournament,” said Philippines coach Andres Gonzales. “But with the limited time that we had and also the level of competition, it was just not to be even though we played better against Indonesia than we did against Singapore.”

Stallion: We still own Sanchez

CLAIMING that his team still has rights over Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez, coach Ernie Nierras of United Football League champion Stallion said he is willing to listen for offers from teams wanting the services of last season’s league top scorer.

With the UFL Cup less than two months away, teams are shoring up their rosters and Sanchez, who scored 18 goals last season, could be the biggest player available in the market.

“He is still a Stallion player and we are waiting for offers from clubs that are interested in acquiring him,” said Nierras, who steered Stallion to a rare Cup and League double for the first time last season.

“So far, nobody has talked to me (regarding Rufo). We don’t understand why everybody is assuming that he’s no longer with the team,” added Nierras, whose squad has started preparations for the coming season with a training camp in Iloilo.

But Sanchez, who is still taking a break in Spain, announced on Twitter that he is now a free agent, insisting that his contract with Stallion ended last week.

The Spanish striker was loaned to Global for a month last July, seeing action in the Singapore Cup, where he scored two goals in the two-leg quarterfinal duel against DPMM Brunei.

Global has actually expressed interest in acquiring Sanchez on a permanent deal.

“If he’s a free agent, then we are interested in getting his services,” said Global owner Dan Palami.

“He can be a big help to the team as seen in the Singapore Cup and with Global preparing for more tournaments overseas, he will certainly play an important role for us if we sign him.”

AFC Challenge Cup moved to May 2014 ?

1. The 2014 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup to be held in the Maldives has been postponed by the AFC according to the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).
   
   The tournament originally scheduled for March 8-23 next year, could now be played in May 2014. AFC has apparently sent a letter to FAM regarding the postponement and is awaiting a response from FAM.

Team James settles score against Team Phil in Clear Dream rematch

TEAM James settled its score against Team Phil as it rolled to a 4-1 victory in the Clear Dream Match 2 on a rainy Saturday night at the University of Makati pitch.
James Younghusband’s squad atoned for a 1-5 defeat against the same team last year as it pounced on the undermanned opposition that played with only 10 men most of the game after an early ejection of a teammate.
Having a world-class defender in Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro also aided Team James' cause and limited the scoring of Team Phil, which had the presence of Chelsea icon Dennis Wise.
Izzo El-Habib shone brightest for Team James with a brace on the way to being named best striker and MVP.
Three other Team James players received individual awards, with Yves Ashime copping best defender honors, Saba Garmaroudi best goalkeeper, and Misagh Bahadoran voted as Greenwich Favorite Player of the Game.
Chris Greatwich was the lone Team Phil individual awardee, earning the Best Midfielder award.
“We won, but the real winner is Philippine football and the beneficiaries,” James said as half of the proceeds of the charity all-star game will go to the victims of Typhoon Maring, with the other half to the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation.
“We would’ve won if we didn’t play with just ten men,” said Phil, whose team got crippled after teammate Rodrigue Nembot was sent off for a dangerous tackle barely 15 minutes into the game.
“At kung hindi pangit `yung weather,” the Filipino-British strike star added, trying his best to speak in Tagalog.
Clear brand manager Drew Copuyoc was pleased with the turnout of the fans, who braved the rain and still filled the stadium despite the heavy downpour.

AFF U16: Indonesia Take Group B Lead

AYPYITAW (23 Aug 2013) – Indonesia took the lead in Group B of the AFF AYA Bank Under-16 Championship when they edged the Philippines 2-0 in the second match of the day at the Wunna Theikdi Stadium.

But the score line could have been much bigger had it not been for the excellent work of Philippines keeper Michael Asong, who made several crucial saves in either half to prevent an Indonesian onslaught.

“Yes, the keeper made the difference but we are just happy with the full points,” said Mundari Karya, the coach of Indonesia. “It was important that we win today to make sure of our passage to the next round.”

Whether it was over-confidence or otherwise, Indonesia were a little slow off the mark on the day where their failure to stamp their dominance saw the Philippines taking more control.

It was not until the 33^rd minute of play, that Gatot Wahyudi finally broke the deadlock when he made up for his earlier miss by capitalising on a defensive mistake.

Indonesia piled on the pressure well into the second half before Riyanto made sure of the points in the 77^th minute with a well-taken shot from the edge of the Philippines box.

Pasargad holds tryout today

CEBUANO booters may have a chance to play in this year’s United Football League (UFL) Division 1 season as the Pasargad Football Club will be holding a tryout today from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
Pasargad FC owner Esmaeil Sedigh said the tryout is open to everyone. Pasargad FC is the first UFL Division 1 team which has decided to hold tryouts here.
“I know that Cebu had a very good grassroots program five years ago and this is the reason why we decided to hold tryouts here,” Sedigh said.
According to Sedigh, they are also negotiating with Eleazar Toledo, head coach of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, to join them as one of the club’s coaches. Sedigh said he has some Cebuano players comprising his futsal teams.
Sedigh said that one other reason he decided to hold tryouts here is because he was impressed with the youth team that they adopted for the UFL Youth League last summer.
The Pasargad FC U-17 was comprised mostly of the former members of the Little Azkals or the Philippine U-14 and Cebuano booters.

Panhay saves Dynamic with 2 goals in NFL finals

Despite the loss of his mother last Sunday, eventual “Most Valuable Player” Jayson Panhay played one of his best games on Wednesday when he anchored Dynamic Builders FC successfully defended their title against arch-rival Ceres Transport FC in the 2nd Conference of the North Football League played at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan.
As expected, both clubs stamped their class with remarkable performance forcing a scoreless halftime.
But, Ceres came out more aggressive at the start of the second half when Joshua Fegidero found the back of the net to give the Transport a 1-nil lead.
However, Panhay got some space to even the game, 1-all and later nailed another to seal the back-to-back win for Dynamic.
It was recalled that during the elimination, Ceres haven’t outplayed Dynamic but played close matches with 1-nil setback in the first round while finished in a scoreless draw in the second round.
During the first conference, both cubs also played close with Dynamic edging Ceres in the penalty shootout, 4-3./

Cannavaro left red-faced after own-goal in Clear tune-up match

He may be regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation, but that doesn’t mean Fabio Cannavaro is incapable of making mistakes.

Off a miscalculated header to the keeper, the Italian football legend committed a stunning own goal in Team James’ 2-2 draw against the Philippine Under-23 men’s football team in a tune-up match on Thursday night at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.

Cannavaro, the former Fifa World Player of the Year who captained Italy to the 2006 World Cup title, was in town to grace the Clear Dream Match slated on Saturday along with Chelsea icon Dennis Wise.

And the Italian center-back is with James Younghusband’s team, which had its first and only practice session that included the tune-up game with the U-23 Azkals.

The lapse was understandable as Cannavaro could be weary from obliging dozens of interviews and photo opportunities earlier in the day during the press conference at Makati Shangri-La.

“He got a mistake … pero siguro nag-aadjust pa siya kanina sa game, ayaw niya masyado ma-stress,” teammate Chieffy Caligdong said as Cannavaro laughed off the blooper by going down on his knees and raising his hands like he was celebrating.

Except for the miscue, Cannavaro was flawless, with his mere presence a big boost to the development of the sport in the country, according to the Azkals skipper.

“Malaking bagay ito, especially sa younger generation like yung U-23,” Caligdong said. “Yung motivation, halos magkaka-same height lang sila, ‘di ba? Hindi siya ganun ka laki, pero the way he plays, yung movement, at body position perfect,” he added of the 5-foot-9 Cannavaro.

Caligdong admitted to having made his own mistakes and having the honor of Cannavaro correcting him.

“Sinabihan niya ako na may mistake ako dun sa ginagawa ko,” Caligdong related. “The important thing in football daw is yung body position, when you receive the ball, kailangan daw yung vision mo malaki. Sinabi niya yung hindi lang sa akin, kung hindi sa lahat.”

“Hindi naman tayo magiging ganito kung hindi natin i-aaccept yung mistake natin,” Caligdong added. “We have to accept our mistake and learn from it.”

Philippine U-11 boys football team off to UK

TWENTY two members of the Philippine Under-11 boys football team are set to undergo a three-week education and sports training program in the United Kingdom.

The training and educational trip is set from August 23 to September 15 and aims to help the Philippine Football Federation (PFF)prepare a team that will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2019.     

The program is being undertaken by the PFF in cooperation with both the British Council and British Embassy.

Among those bound for UK include Mark Alanquihan (Dipolog), Mark Amaikurut (Davao), Josh Asignar (Cebu), Yuan Rena (Cebu), Tristan Enad (Cebu), Charles Unabia (Cebu) Chevey Celeste (San Carlos City, Nefros Occ.), Shemrei Marobillo (San Carlos City, Negros Occ.),Joi Gaid Jr. (Cagayan de Oro), Greg Naquines (Cagayan de Oro) and John Karl Solomo (Iloilo)

Also going are Jill Pillora (Iloilo), Agiel John Rojo (South Cotobato), Drexler Valencia (Negros Oriental), Ildefonso Escobin (Laguna), Robert Orr (NCR), Michael Osorio (NCR), Jacob Padernal (NCR), Nikko Guitierrez (NCR), Nicolei San Jose Abalos (Laguna), Shaninho Clemente (NCR), and Vin Joel Dela Cruz (NCR).

Five coaches and staff designated by the PFF will accompany the team.

The boys will have training matches with several U-11 boys’ teams from the UK and get a chance to watch an English Premiere League and a World Cup qualifying match between England and Moldova at the historic Wembley Stadium.

The players are among the top ones scouted from the nationwide  Kasibulan Grassroots Development Program launched in 2012 by the PFF. 

They were selected from among the national pool of U-11 players formed after the subsequent Regional Festival of Football  conducted in March of  this year.

The 22-player selection was made by PFF coaches after simultaneous national pool players’ inspections in Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Tarlac.  

The PFF Kasibulan: Grassroots Football Development Program is funded by Pagcor and supported by the Department of Education and the  Asian Football Development Program.

The United Kingdom boasts of one of the best football programmes in the world and is known for its world-class sports facilities, players, coaches and most importantly, sports education.

The programme will be conducted by Loughborough University in Leicestershire, UK - one of the world’s greatest sporting Institutions.  

The educational and training  program is supported by ABS-CBN Studio 23, Mitre, SM West Avenue Theater, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Voyage Film, and Spears Sports Activation.

A film documentary of this innovative education and training program will be documented by filmmakers Clodualdo del Mundo and Baby Ruth Villarama and produced by Albert Almendralejo.

Azkals pick up stride with Peace Cup, friendlies

WITH the AFC Challenge Cup only a few months away, the Philippine Azkals are set for a busy final quarter of the year with the Philippine Peace Cup and a series of friendlies against high-level teams to prepare them for the major tournament that dangles a spot in the Asian Cup.
Azkals manager Dan Palami said preparations for the Challenge Cup will already kick into high gear in the final quarter of 2013 as the team braces for a tough battle in the Challenge Cup in the Maldives in March.
“The target is to win the tournament and reach the Asian Cup,” said Palami, who hinted at regular training sessions for the Azkals even at the middle of the United Football League season just to whip the side into fighting form.
After the friendly match against Indonesia last Wednesday in Solo, Central Java, where the Azkals lost, 0-2, the Philippine Football Federation is now eyeing a friendly against New Zealand and its neighbor New Caledonia for September.
The Azkals will also be in action the following month when they defend their Philippine Peace Cup title from Oct. 11 to 15 in Bacolod City, which is hosting an international match for the first time since the Guam-Philippines game in June last year.
Philippine Football Federation general-secretary Ed Gastanes said they are looking at Challenge Cup qualifier Kyrgyzstan as a possible participant in the Peace Cup.
New Caledonia will also be invited for the five-day tournament if the friendly against the New Caledonians does not push through next month.
The Azkals ruled the Peace Cup last year, besting Chinese-Taipei, Guam and Macau at Rizal Memorial Stadium. Gastanes said the PFF will invite one of the teams that saw action last year to complete the cast in Bacolod.

NFL: Dynamic–Ceres Finals Reset Tomorrow

Due to heavy rains last Sunday, the much awaited rematch between two powerhouse clubs, defending champion Dynamic Builders FC and Ceres Transport FC, for the championship of the 2nd Conference of the North Football League was cancelled and moved tomorrow at 3PM at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan in Bacolod City.
Last conference, both clubs had a tough battle in the finals as the Builders prevailed over the Transport via penalty shootout, 4-3.
Meanwhile, Silver Dragons FC repeated over Trimaxi-Agro via penalty shootout, 4-3.
Both clubs ended the regulation, 3-all with Ryan Hemida giving Trimaxi the early lead with the first minute goal as Marti Malubay was quick to even the scoreboard with his goal in the 4th minute.
But Hemida found a space to nail his second in the 17th minute as Paul Dionson struck another in the 21st for a 3-1 Trimaxi advantage.
However, determined of keeping the fight, SD’s Malubay connected his second in the 23rd as Renz Guevarra equalized the ballgame in the 37th minute for a 3-all score at the break.
Both sides tried to secure a winning goal in the second half but the rain slow down their respective offense as they ended scoreless after 40-minute of play.

Little Azkals vie for honors in Asean U-16

SOME of the Philippines’ finest homegrown footballers team up to vie for honors in the Asean Football Federation Under-16 Championship kicking off on Tuesday in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.
Twenty teenagers were picked from Metro Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Cebu, Oroquieta, Dumaguete, Masbate, and Bukidnon, and one from the US to form the Little Azkals.
Striker Jeremiah “JB” Borlongan is expected to lead the squad, along with midfielders Mark Winhoffer and Darius Diamante, and defender Josh Miller — players whom head coach Anto Gonzales believes could make it to the Azkals’ roster in the future.
Michael Asong, Marco Casambre, Harel Dayan, Jed Delariarte, Major Ebarle, Brian Haim, Dimitri Limbo, Jovan Marfiga, Chester Pabualan, Ivan Palmero, Sebastian Patangan, John Saldivar, James Sambalod, Ray Sanciangco, and Orlan Togores complete the roster.
The Little Azkals’ first assignment is Malaysia on Wednesday. The Filipinos then take on Indonesia on Friday, Singapore on Sunday, and Laos next Tuesday.
Group A is made up of the host country, Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia, and newcomer Australia.
The top two teams from each group advance to the crossover semifinals, beginning August 31.
The core of the squad last participated in the Fam-Frenz Asean Championship in June, finishing fifth among six teams in Group B with three victories in 10 games.
Gonzales will be assisted by Jose Maria Aberasturi, with Anthony Albao as goalkeeping coach. Maja Año (team coordinator) and Audrey Mariano (physiotherapist) complete the team staff.

Bacoleño, Negrense Fans to Witness Azkals Games This October

TALISAY CITY – Bacolod and Negros football fans get another chance to witness the Philippine men’s football team – Azkals playing at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City tentatively on October 11, 13 and 15.

This was disclosed yesterday by Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella, who was also present during the opening of Super Metro at The District North Point Ayala Mall here in Talisay City.

"Last year’s Peace Cup, we beaten teams from Chinese Taipei, Guam and Hongkong to bag the crown. This time, our national team will be playing against the top teams from Europe," said Puentevella, who is also a FIFA Marketing and Television executive.

Puentevella said that Cyril Dofitas, Philippine Football Federation Tournament Committee head, has already given the green light for Panaad to stage the event.

"It’s a big development for Bacolod, because hotels and other businesses will benefit from this international competition," Puentevella said. "I’m asking those who want to watch the games to make early booking on our hotels because tourists are expecting to flock in the city for the Masskara celebration," he added.

The tournament will, likewise, serve as part of the national squad’s preparation for next year’s AFC Challenge Cup. The team advance in 2014 Challenge Cup after topping Group E last March at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Moreover, it will also be Panaad’s first game featuring the Azkals and foreign teams after it last hosted the Philippines-Guam friendly last June 12, 2012.

Indonesians foil Azkals anew

An in-form Indonesian side kept its mastery of the Philippines with a 2-0 victory in an international friendly Wednesday night at a jampacked Manahan Stadium in Solo, Indonesia.

Far from their best form with majority of their players on a break from league play, the Azkals conceded a goal in each half and lost for the third time in four meetings against their Southeast Asian rivals.

Backed by close to 25,000 supporters, Indonesia’s naturalized player Greg Nwokolo from Nigeria struck the opener with a close-range strike off a clever ball into the box by Stefano Lilipaly in the 31st minute.

Mohammad Rubi doubled the lead in the 66th minute by heading home a corner kick.

Playing in a cauldron-like atmosphere, the travel-weary Azkals, who arrived a day before the match after 15 hours of travel from Manila, found difficulty getting into the flow of their attack and looked vulnerable on defense with every Indonesian foray.

With their substitutes making an impact, the Azkals threatened late on with Marwin Angeles sending an effort from inside the area wide in the 78th minute and OJ Porteria also firing wide from a difficult angle a minute later after Misagh Bahadoran and Angeles had cleverly set him up.

Phil Younghusband also shot wide, attempting to finish off a quick counter-attack in the Azkals’ best chance in the 83rd minute.

“It’s disappointing but I have to take the positives from the match,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami, who watched the game from Manila. “We were able to play our Under-23 players which really bodes well for the future, especially for our SEA Games preparations.”

With the AFC Challenge Cup still seven months away, coach Michael Weiss took the match as an opportunity to tinker with the lineup.

The likes of Stephan Schrock, Javier Patino, Jerry Lucena, Neil Etheridge, Juani Guirado and Dennis Cagara were also unavailable due to club commitments.

Without an experienced centerback to pair up with Rob Gier, Weiss opted to deploy rightback Carli de Murga in the middle and placed James Young-husband, a right winger, at rightback in another makeshift backline.

Weiss also showed plenty of confidence in his young players, starting Mark Hartmann with Phil Younghusband up front and bringing in 18-year-old defender Amani Aguinaldo who played close to 30 minutes. Jerry Barbaso also replaced James Younghusband in the second half.

“After a first game for our team after a long layoff, I can look into the future and say we’ll know what to do in the next few months and where the direction will be for the preparations in the Challenge Cup,” said Palami.

Younghusbands get the all-clear for Dream Match

PHIL and James Younghusband have assured that there will be no scheduling conflicts this time between their national team duty and their off-field commitments.
The celebrated brothers once again headline the Clear Dream Match, the same charity all-star football game last year which caused a scheduling conflict with the Azkals' US training camp that led to the Younghusbands being left out of the Peace Cup roster.
A year later, the Filipino-British booters are happy that there will be such problems this time.
“There’s no scheduling conflict this time,” James Younghusband told Spin.ph on Saturday during the Clear Dream Match Draft at the SM Megamall Events Center.
“Football is still developing in the country. Obviously there are different schedules, different goals, and it’s about merging those goals together, and everyone uniting, forgetting about the politics and trying to get the same goal to develop football in the country,” James added.
Last year, the Clear Dream Match coincided with the Azkals’ US training camp in August, which the Younghusbands missed. As a consequence, they were excluded from the Peace Cup roster the following month.
“We learned things from last year,” Phil said. “The communication with boss Dan (Palami), coach (Michael) Weiss, the PFF, our management, Clear, and everyone has been amazing this year, so it should avoid any (conflicts) like that.”
“They’ve been very understanding,” added Phil, the country’s top international scorer. “I’m sure they know what this Clear Dream Match does to football. And we owe a lot to the Azkals and we’re also looking forward to the game against Indonesia.”
The Azkals, who climbed this month to their best-ever world ranking at 141st, return to action on Wednesday when they face Indonesia at the opponent’s turf in a Fifa friendly that the Younghusbands are going to make.
“I’m very thankful to the PFF,” James said. “They didn’t schedule (an Azkals activity on the same day as the Clear event). They’ve scheduled at least a game (earlier) to get the team together and give an opportunity to the Under-23 players to show what they’ve got and show that they should be playing in the SEA Games.”
OJ Porteria, Jeff Christiaens, Marwin Angeles, Mark Hartmann, Joshua Beolya, Patrick Deyto, Raymark Fernandez, Paolo Bugas, and Amani Aguinaldo are the U-23 standouts who have been called up against Indonesia.

Dynamic vs Ceres in NFL finals

POWERHOUSE clubs Dynamic Builders and Ceres Transport blanked their respective rivals Sunday to secure another trip to the finals of the 2nd Conference of the North Football League being played at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.
This is the second time that both these clubs made it to the finals this year with the Builders winning over the Transport, 4-3, in a penalty shootout during the last conference.
En route the finals, reigning Most Valuable Player Jayson Panhay scored double to lead Dynamic in a 3-nil triumph over Silver Dragon.
After half-hour of scoreless scrimmage, Panhay found the back of the net in the 36th minute to post a 1-nil led at the break.
In the second half, both sides employed tight defense until Ryan Lirio in the 55th minute for a 2-nil advantage before Panhay sealed the game in the 64th minute.
On the other hand, Joshua Fegidero and Janrick Soriano powered Ceres with two goals each on the 5-nil win over Trimai-Agro FC.
The match was tight in the first half with Fegidero scoring the lone goal in the early 27th minute.
However, Ceres surged in the second half Soriano nailing a goal in the 47th minute as Fegidero added another in the 56th minute.
With 3-nil lead and time winding down, Trimaxi’s defense finally collapsed as Soriano and Julius Navales scoring in the 83rd and 87th minutes to book the win.
Meanwhile, Trimaxi and Silver Dragons, likewise, got another face-off in the Battle for Third with the latter squad surviving a shootout, 7-6. (HGD)

No let up for Azkals

PLAYING a lead role in the continued rise of the national football team in the world rankings, Azkals manager Dan Palami stressed that there should be no letup for the squad and the program it has undertaken.
The Azkals ruled the four-nation Philippine Peace Cup last year for their first trophy in close to a century and, although they reached their all-time high ranking of No. 141 this month, they remain hungry for a major title, particularly the AFF Suzuki Cup and the AFC Challenge Cup.
A day after the International Football Federation released the latest rankings that saw the Azkals climb three spots, Palami could not help but look back at the time when he took the team under his wing four years ago when the Azkals were hovering near the 170th position.
Back then, support was hard to come by and the Azkals competed internationally with little fanfare—a far cry from the attention they have been getting now.
“It’s been a very rewarding journey,” said Palami, who is also involved with the Philippine Football Federation in his capacity as chair of the national team committee as well as the Philippine Homeless World Cup.
The Azkals won’t see action in a major tournament until the 2013 AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives. A series of overseas training camps and top matches, including a Nov. 9 duel with United Arab Emirates, have been slated this year and early next year to whip the Azkals into fighting shape for the Challenge Cup.
The Challenge Cup champion will gain a berth in the AFC Asian Cup in 2015—one of Palami’s most cherished goals for the team.
“The rankings show we’re taking steps in the right direction,” he said. “But we always want to achieve more.
“We’re hoping that the success continues but of course, there is much work and resources to be put in the program.”
Palami is also involved in the preparation of the team for the Southeast Asian Games, helping out manager Rhayan Cruz, and giving several Under-23 Azkals like Mark Hartmann, Patrick Deyto, Amani Aguinaldo and Paolo Bugas spots in the lineup for the coming friendly with Indonesia on Wednesday.

Philippine Azkals reach new high in Fifa ranking

THE Philippine men’s football team reached a milestone on Thursday when it notched its highest-ever world ranking.
The Azkals moved three places up to 141st on the Fifa table from a ranking of 144 last month. The previous high was 143rd in November.
They hardly saw action last month, but the Azkals moved up after several countries dropped particularly St. Lucia, which slipped to 142nd; Belize, which fell 13 spots down to 143rd; and Syria, which dipped four places to 147th.
Thailand remained the top team in Southeast Asia at 137th, while Singapore rounded out the Top 3 in the region at 155th.
The Azkals' next fixture is on Wednesday when they face Indonesia in an international friendly where several Under-23 standouts vying for the Southeast Asian Games roster have been called up.

Renewed optimism for football teams after talk with SEAG Task Force

THE Philippine Football Federation has expressed optimism that the Under-23 men’s and women’s football teams will finally be included in the country’s delegation to the upcoming Southeast Asian Games following its meeting with the SEA Games task force on Wednesday.
PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta and general secretary Edwin Gastanes came out with a “light heart” after presenting their arguments before the task force led by Philippine Olympic Committee chairman Tom Carrasco and the delegation’s chief of mission Jeff Tamayo.
“I think as a whole, the meeting went well. They asked some questions and we were able to answer them,” Gastanes told Spin.ph in a phone conversation. “We will await the decision, but if only for the fact that we were given the opportunity to present our arguments before them is a good sign for us.”
Gastanes expects the task force to come up with a recommendation to the POC in one week, although he said the prospects look dim for the futsal teams as they were not part of the “entry by number” submitted by the task force to the organizing committee in Myanmar for the 27th edition of the regional biennial meet.
The deadline of submission of “entry by names” is September 6, according to Gastanes.
Gastanes emphasized that the teams were formed earlier than usual. Unlike two years ago when the teams were formed only three months before the tournament, the teams were formed eight months before this year, giving the coaching staff sufficient time to prepare.
Also asked about recent track record of the teams, the PFF gave the task force their roster and playing history, noting that “many members of the A-team that became champion in last year’s Peace Cup, 10 of them, are still in the U-23.”
Gastanes said dragonboat was the next national sports association that presented its cause to the task force in one of the meeting rooms of the Philippine Sports Commission at the Rizal Memorial Complex.

Queen City eyes return to UFL

DESPITE being out of the United Football League (UFL) for months now, Cebu Queen City United (CQCU) strengthens their roster for a possible stint in the proposed UFL Cup October.
“We will return possibly in the UFL Cup in October. But that (tournament) is still subject to approval (by the UFL),” CQCU head coach Mario Ceniza said. “But as of this stage, nothing is concrete. We are also preparing for the Aboitiz Cup.”
CQCU is currently a work in progress because the team still lacks players to different positions.
“We are not yet a solid team because we still lack players. We had players that played that were under tryout,” said Ceniza. “We are happy because there are high-quality Manila teams that come here to Cebu for tune-ups.”
CQCU settled for a 1-1 draw with Division Two squad Manila All-Japan (MAJ) FC in a friendly match yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Complex football pitch. CQCU scored the opening goal in the first half before conceding an equalizer in the second half.
CQCU currently has 18 regular players. Ceniza wants to reinforce the team especially in the goalkeeper and midfield positions.
CQCU didn’t participate in the Division Two of the UFL after the Cebu-based squad’s request for home games was turned down by the league.
Ceniza said that choosing new players to add to the team’s roster is a complicated process that needs time.
“It’s a long process to bring in players. We need more games and we don’t give assurance and give answers. If you want to stick with the team, just come to practices and from there, if the team needs you, then we will bring you in,” he said.
CQCU finished third in Division 2 behind champion Pachanga and Diliman FC before sitting out Division Two last season.

Azkals test new talents in Indonesia friendly

The Philippines, hoping to build a stronger core of talents, gets a chance to test new players when it visits Indonesia for an international friendly on Aug. 14 at Manahan Stadium in Solo, Central Java.

National team manager Dan Palami hinted at calling up the standouts of the PH Under-23 side to suit up for the Azkals, whose next major tournament won’t come until March next year in the AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives.

Among those in the short list of candidates are goalkeeper Patrick Deyto and midfielders Paolo Bugas and Mark Hartmann, who hasn’t played for the national team since September 2011 in the Long Teng Cup.

Deyto, a former La Salle player, is considered one of the best homegrown goalkeepers, while Bugas and Hartmann were impressive for the Under-23 side in its clash with the United Football League All-Stars last month.

“We want to test some new players, who could also help us in the future,” said Palami. “The friendly is a good chance to develop talents.”

The Under-23 players are preparing for the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar, although the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission have yet to approve their stint in the biennial games.

Palami said only a couple of Europe-based Azkals—Angel Guirado and defender Rob Gier, who skippered the squad in the 1-0 triumph over Hong Kong last June—will be called up.

It will be the fourth meeting between the Philippines and Indonesia since 2010, when the Azkals made the Suzuki Cup semifinals only to bow to the Mera Putih, 0-2, on aggregate.

The Azkals and Mera Putih battled to a tense 2-2 draw in Manila in June 2012 that saw three players get red cards.

Chieffy Caligdong and Phil and James Younghusband will still lead the Azkals, who have steadily improved their Fifa ranking in the past two years.

The Azkals are now perched at No. 144, the second-ranked team in the region behind Thailand.
