Malditas to attend US training camp
The Philippine women’s football team Malditas will go to a training camp in the US and compete in the inaugural LA Viking Cup to jumpstart their buildup for next year’s qualifi ers for the 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Malditas coach Ernie Nierras said over 35 potential Malditas – a mixture of homegrown talents and prospects from the US, including division 1 players – will attend the camp slated Nov. 14-22 in Fullerton, California. “Players from CAL Berkeley, Wake Forest, Univ of Miami, Loyola, Boston U, Long Beach St, Vanderbilt, ECU, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, UC Riverside, UNC Greensboro, Cornell, Monmouth, Cal St Fullerton, and others (will be attending),” said Nierras. “We will be inspecting U19 and U16 girls also,” he added. From the camp, the Malditas will test their skills on the pitch as they take part in the LA Viking Cup, a four-team invitational tournament set Nov. 23-Dec. 1 at Titan Stadium, also in Fullerton, California. Giving the Malditas a taste of the American style of football are Women’s Professional Soccer League sides LA Vikings and California Cosmos as well as Caribbean national side Trinidad and Tobago “Soca Princesses.”
The Malditas are gearing up for their campaign in the May 2013 AFC qualifi ers, where they found themselves bunched against powerhouse rivals in Group B after the recent draw in Malaysia. Former champion Thailand (No. 30 in the Fifa ranking), Iran (54th) and Bangladesh (115th), stand in the way of the Malditas (85th) and their dreams of making strides internationally.

Norfa outshines Little Azkals in Pintaflores U16
Thursday, November 1, 2012
NEGROS Oriental Football Association escaped the Under-14 national team to collar the 5th Pintaflores National U16 Invitational Football Cup yesterday in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.
The Little Azkals fell short in the penalty shootout, 4-2, after the regulation ended in a 2-2 tie.
It was the Little Azkals’ first loss in the tournament.
But a runner-up finish already made Little Azkals head coach Oliver Colina proud of his boys, especially with his team being the youngest squad to participate in an Under-16 tournament.
Colina said he wasn’t frustrated with the performance of his boys but rather with the sloppy officiating, which he thought foiled the game.
“Nindot ang duwa sa mga bata but walay klaro ang calls,” said Colina.
He also added that to have come this far for an exposure tournament for his 14-year-
old players who went up with 16 year old players, they had nothing to lose.
But he still has to remind his boys to play under pressure especially in penalty shootout situations.
This will be the team’s last tune-up competition before they head to a national tour, where they will get the chance to play either Singapore or Australia.
“They are in good shape and makita nimo ang heart sa mga bata muduwa. Even if they are young, dako kaayo ug potential,” said Colina.

Malditas to conduct first US training camp in November
Karl Decena, InterAKTV
In an effort to further strengthen the squad, the Philippine national women’s football team has organized its first ever training camp in the United States this November.
Malditas coach Ernie Nierras said that tryouts for Fil-foreign women footballers who could possibly join the national team is slated from November 14 to November 22.
“Yes it’s the first time. We’ve invited 40 plus potential women’s national team players,” Nierras said.
After the camp, the Filipinas will then compete in the inaugural LA Viking Cup in Fullerton, California from November 23 to December 2. The tournament will feature the national women’s football team of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as United States-based squads Los Angeles Vikings and California Cosmos, which will both parade top international and amateur players.
While the Malditas already have a number of Fil-foreign players, such as Fil-Americans Heather Cooke, Patrice Impelido and Ashley O’Connor, among others, they have had few opportunities to play against international squads unlike their male counterparts, the Azkals, who get the chance to play against various teams around the world.
Currently ranked 85th in the world, the Malditas last played in the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship in September where they finished third in their group but failed to make it to the semifinals of the tournament.

UFL Cup - General Trias International draws Pasargad
Karl Decena, InterAKTV ·
Newcomer General Trias International FC made its surprising entry to the United Football Cup quarterfinals after eliminating Pasargad in a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at the University of Makati.
Song Ji Hun scored a header off a corner kick at the ninth minute to give General Trias an early 1-nil lead.
Needing a victory to advance to the quarterfinals, Pasargad became aggressive on the attack after that play, creating multiple goal chances. Iranian striker Masood Shahideh then finally hit the net at the 48th minute to tie the match early in the second half.
Pasargad then made good attempts late in the game, with shots at the 89th and the 92nd minute, which were all deflected by the General Trias defense.
The South Korea-bolstered General Trias, which even needed to go through the qualifiers to make it to the Cup proper, finished second in Group A with eight points to book a ticket to the knockout stages and face the winner of Group D which is still being disputed.
The draw also set up a classic quarterfinal clash between reigning League champion Global, which topped Group A with 10 points, and League runner-up Kaya, which finished second in Group B.
The UFL Cup quarterfinals will begin on November 6.

Azkals playing Green Archers United
Azkals have scheduled to play two friendlies against local UFL Clubs , first match was played this Saturday against Stallion FC . Azkals won 7-4 , next friendly is scheduled for 10. November.
Dan Palami told reporter Mike Limpag in Sun Star Cebu that Azkals will be playing Green Archers United as the last warm-up friendly before Singapore friendly in Cebu City on 15. November.

Azkals darkhorse in Suzuki Cup - Palami
Philippine men’s football team manager Dan Palami expressed belief the Azkals will be the “darkhorse” of next month’s AFF Suzuki Cup in Bangkok, no longer the same “underdogs” that went under the radar but pulled off surprises in the previous edition.
“Our opponents no longer consider us underdogs but the darkhorse in the tournament. Everybody’s expecting a hard fight from us and we have to live up to expectations as well, not only from fans here but also from the competition,” said Palami.
Two years ago, the unheralded Azkals shocked their rivals by forcing three-time ASEAN champ Singapore to a 1-1 draw, beating 2008 titlist Vietnam (2-0) in what was considered “Upset of the Year” then battling Myanmar to a 0-0 standoff to emerge second in Group B and qualify for a breakthrough semifinals.
The Azkals lost to Indonesia in the semis on aggregate, 2-0, to bow out of the championship scene. But they took that semis stint as springboard to making strides in international play, making the second round of the Asian Qualifiers for the 2014 Fifa World Cup last year, copping bronze medal in the AFC Challenge Cup last March, and winning a first tourney in 99 years, the Philippine Football Peace Cup last September.
“We caught them by surprise in 2010, but I doubt they will get surprised by us again,” said Palami, whose wards currently enjoy their best ever Fifa world ranking at 147th, a high third in the Asean.
“We have to prove we deserve the ranking as well as the reputation we’re getting from the football community.”
The Azkals are in the final phase of their preparations for the Suzuki Cup, which blasts off Nov. 24. Phl XI is bunched with co-host Thailand, Vietnam and qualification round winner Myanmar in Group A.
The team had its mini camp over the weekend, highlighted by a tuneup game with United Football League club Stallion FC at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Fil-Germans Denis Wolf and Patrick Reichelt both scored a hat-trick while Marvin Angeles also found the back of the net as the Azkals beat Stallion, 7-4. Spanish Rufo Sanchez also knocked in three goals while Jovanie Simpron added one for Stallion.
The mini camp featured local-based mainstays, minus the players of the Loyola Meralco Sparks led by Phil and James Younghusband who were slated to vie for bronze in the Singapore Cup in Singapore.
The Azkals will play the Singapore Lions on Nov. 15 in Cebu as final game before leaving for the Suzuki Cup in separate batches on the 19th and 20th. This will serve as Round 2 for the two sides, which mixed it up last month in Singapore with the Azkals victorious, 2-0.
The Lions look to go all out not just to avenge that loss but also to impress their coaching staff for spots in the Final 22 who will eventually see action in Group B of the ASEAN tilt.

UFL Cup suspend matches due to rain
The United Football League suspended its scheduled matches on Thursday due to the rains brought by tropical storm ‘Ofel.’
The Cup’s Group C matches between the Loyola Meralco Sparks and Mendiola FC at 7 p.m. and Pachanga and Laos FC at 9 p.m. at the University of Makati were cancelled due to the unplayable conditions of the field caused by the rain.
The UFL, however, promised to post the new schedule of the postponed games as soon as possible.
Metro Manila has been put under storm signal 1 while nearby provinces, as well as some areas in Visayas, have been placed under storm signal 2 because of tropical storm ‘Ofel,’ which will stay in the country until Friday.

Azkals-Kuwait match an authorized friendly
World football governing body FIFA clarified that the exhibition game between the Philippine Azkals and Kuwait Al Azraq last week is a FIFA full international "A-match."
FIFA has earlier taken down the friendly in their list of recognized exhibition games, citing that it was not an authorized game.
This led to the nullification of the Azkals’ 2-1 loss to Kuwait.
But in a report posted on the Azkals’ official website, FIFA clarified that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which is also under FIFA, has authorized the match.
"We were just informed now that AFC authorized this match. So it will be back a A-match. We apologize for that," FIFA told the Azkals’ official website.
This means that game’s result will affect the ratings of Kuwait and the Philippines in the FIFA world rankings for November.

The home team BCFA netted a 6-1 victory over Laguna United that saw midfielder Joseph Lingwayon scoring another hat trick, his second in the tournament and the only player to score seven goals and the top goal scorer in the Luzon Cluster A.
Baguio United redeemed its only loss of the tournament with a 6-1 victory over LB United with Ahmed Abubaker brok the ice from a back flip from BUFC target man Mohanna Farah who also scored two goals in the game. Farah played for Pachange FC in UFL Division 2 last season.
“With this qualification and strong showing of the BCFA as represented by Baguio United FC, the City of Baguio, football enthusiasts and private entities are encouraged to help the team prepare for the All-Luzon leg,” said Homer Alinsug of the Baguio United FC squad who represented BCFA.
With the win, BUFC has a record of 4 wins, 1 loss and 0 draw for a total of 12 points, enough to push it through the All-Luzon leg in Laguna in November 16-18, composed of top two teams from Luzon Clusters A and B. The Cluster B leg will be held in Bicol next week.
BUFC will resume training this coming Thursday and will welcome back 3 starters to beef up their line-up.
They will include Mark Lusung (from RP youth team), Friday Okoro (Goshenland Cup MVP) and Ali Kore (Center Back).
“BUFC extends its deepest gratitude to BCFA President Leo Arnaiz for his support for the team, Matthew Frettsome, Savory Chicken and Goshenland. True friends of football in Baguio, let’s support BCFA Baguio United FC,” added Alinsug.
Baguio would have played its last match against San Beda-Rizal FA but the latter abandoned the match with the home team awarded a 3-0 victory.
Flames United of Cavite FA came on top of the Luzon Cluster A leg with an unblemished record of five wins and one draw and now has the distinction of being the first (and perhaps the only) probationary FA to qualify to the next round.

UFL Cup : Phil Younghusband scores hattrick as Loyola routs Nomads 8-1
Karl Decena, InterAKTV ·
Star striker Phil Younghusband dropped three goals to help Loyola Meralco Sparks overcome an early blunder and demolish Nomads FC, 8-1, in the United Football League Cup Tuesday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The Sparks committed a miscue at the beginning of the match, as a kick by Mickael Cardoso near the penalty box went to Loyola’s Chad Gould, whose deflection went straight to their own goal, giving Nomads a 1-0 edge at the eighth minute.
But Phil Younghusband quickly answered by burying a penalty kick in the 18th minute to score the equalizer. Phil then added another goal courtesy of an assist from his brother James to give Loyola a 2-1 lead.
Korean import Byeong Yeol Jeong also scored in the 40th minute to give the Sparks a 3-1 lead at the break.
Loyola opened the floodgates in the second half, as James Younghusband hit the net at the 49th minute, followed by Anto Gonzales’ goal in the 58th minute to lift Loyola to a commanding 5-1 lead.
Moments after, James freed himself from the Nomads defense and made his way near the goal. But instead of slotting the easy goal, he passed the ball to his brother Phil, who was trailing him and made the shot to bag a hat trick in the 70th minute.
Late substitute Jake Morallo then sank back-to-back goals in the 75th and the 80th minute to settle the final score for the Sparks.
With the victory, Loyola took the top spot in Group C with six points after having superior goal differential over Pachanga and Nomads, which also both have six points in three matches.

Palami: Azkals stronger now
By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Philippine Daily Inquirer
THE PHILIPPINES will have a “much stronger side” than the one that made the semifinals of the AFF Suzuki Cup two years ago when the tournament kicks off Nov. 24 in Bangkok.
This was the assessment of Azkals manager Dan Palami, who said the depth of the side has improved significantly following the influx of new talents over the past two years.
“We’re a much stronger team now,” Palami said at yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Mabini in Manila. “We have a lot of offensive options, unlike in 2010 when our focus was really defending and counter-attacking.”
But Palami said there’s no guarantee that the Azkals’ will have an easier path in the Suzuki Cup with teams like Thailand and Vietnam—two teams in the Azkals’ group which failed to meet expectations two years ago—aching to bounce back.
“We’re no longer coming in as a surprise team,” said Palami. “All the teams are paying attention to us now.”
The Azkals, who narrowly lost to Indonesia in the last four two years ago, are coming off a 10-day camp in the Middle East last week, where they showed up powerhouse sides Bahrain and Kuwait. A couple of local mini-camps have been lined up for the team, before a friendly match with Singapore on Nov. 15 in Cebu City caps the Azkals’ preparations.
Palami attended the forum sponsored by Smart, Outlast Battery and Pagcor with players Marwin Angeles, Misagh Bahadoran and Demitrius Omphroy.
The team still has concerns with the availability of players, particularly goalkeepers Neil Etheridge and Roland Muller and star midfielders Stephan Schrock and Angel Guirado.

Fil-fors to boost Azkals Suzuki bid
The Philippine Azkals have secured the commitment of key foreign-based stalwarts for next month’s AFF Suzuki Cup in Bangkok, but would have to exert extra efforts and persuasion to get the release of top goalkeepers Neil Etheridge and Roland Muller for the ambitious title drive.
“Players based abroad like Jerry Lucena, Dennis Cagara, and Ray Jonsson, nagsabi na (have confirmed) they will be available for the Suzuki Cup,” team manager Dan Palami said during yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate, referring to the Fil-Danish duo and Fil-Icelandic player, whose presence will bolster the Azkals’ backline.
“Ang problema na lang siguro (The only cause of concern at this point) would be the goalkeepers because their clubs have games in those days as well as (Stephan) Schrock,” he added.
Fil-British Etheridge has extended his loan with Bristol Rovers, which will have games on Nov. 24 and 27, the same dates the Azkals are slated to collide with Thailand and Vietnam in the Suzuki Cup.
“It will be difficult because he’s on loan and he’s been really performing well for his club. But we’ll see. We’ll make all the efforts (to get his release for a few games),” Palami said of their first choice keeper.
Fil-German Muller of MSV Duisburg is the next best option for the Azkals, who will also have to lean on Phl-based Eduard Sacapano of Army and Ref Cuaresma of Loyola Meralco Sparks just in case.
“We’ll try to talk to Muller’s club and ask him to play and at the same time we’ll prepare the local-based keepers as much as we can,” he said.
Versatile Fil-German midfielder Schrock ‘s Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim also has games on the Suzuki Cup dates, making it difficult to secure his participation in the event.
The Azkals based in Manila, like Chieffy Caligdong, Misagh Bahadoran, Marwin Angles, Denis Wolf, Phil and James Younghusband, Carli de Murga, Demit Omphroy and Matt Uy, are slated to continue training in two mini camps in the country, prior to the Nov. 15 friendly with Singapore in Cebu, their last game before the Suzuki Cup.
Palami is confident the current crop can contend for the title, having more arsenal than they had in 2010, when they surprised the world with a semis appearance.
“Certainly, we have a stronger team. Now we have a lot of offensive options, unlike in 2010 when we had to really concentrate on defense and just counter (attacking). This time we can actually build up and really set ourselves up for scoring opportunities. Of course, the quality of players have improved as well as the conditioning and fitness level,” he said.
“We have prepared the best way we can. We hope this reaps dividends come Nov. 24 and onwards,” he added.
Asked about the Azkals’ target, Palami said: “Championship, of course.”
Palami compares Phl XI to “an elementary student about to graduate to the high school level” as they set out to achieve a milestone in the Suzuki Cup.

Azkals set mini-camp for S'pore 'friendly'
Although currently with their respective clubs, members of the Philippine Azkals based in Manila will regularly get together for a “mini-camp” and play tuneup matches against local clubs prior to their Nov. 15 international friendly with Singapore in Cebu.
“We’ll gather them in a mini-camp, for say, three days, probably house them in a hotel, so they can be together as a team and develop camaraderie,” Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Nonong Araneta said.
“The plan also calls for them to play against local teams, against UFL teams, in preparation for Nov. 15 in Cebu,” Araneta added.
The friendly with the Lions – actually a second engagement this year following their initial meeting last Sept. 7 in Singapore that saw a monumental 2-0 triumph for the Azkals – serves as Phl XIs’ send-off home game before plunging into action in next month’s AFF Suzuki Cup in Thailand.
The Azkals came off a productive 10-day training camp in the Middle East, battling higher-ranked Bahrain to a scoreless draw and yielding a fighting 1-2 setback to fancied Kuwait before breaking up to rejoin their respective clubs.
Etheridge extends Bristol loan, doubtful for Suzuki Cup
By Edward Lao, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau
BRISTOL – Philippine Azkals first-choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has extended his loan at Bristol Rovers until Christmas, casting doubt on his availability for November's Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.
Etheridge, whose parent club is English Premier League side Fulham FC, impressed during his five-game spell at the club.
He received the offer from Bristol Rovers upon returning from the Middle East, where he was on international duty with the Philippines.
In a telephone interview with ABS-CBN Europe, Etheridge said others knew about the loan extension before even he did.
"I didn't know about it. In fact, it was put over the news. Mark McGhee (the manager) had released it without even me signing the papers so he was obviously quite confident I would sign," Etheridge said.
But because of his extension at Bristol, Etheridge does not expect to be available for the AFF Suzuki Cup, a biennial tournament which will be co-hosted by Malaysia and Thailand this year.
"It's going to be really difficult for me to get out to the Suzuki Cup. The odds are definitely against me," Etheridge said.
"I have spoken to (Azkals team manager) Dan Palami and coach (Michael Weiss). They know that it's going to be difficult for me to travel," he added.
"So it looks like Roland (Muller) will be taking the No. 1 spot for a few of the games, but one of the ideas is that I will fly out for maybe the semi-finals if we reach it."
Muller is the second choice goalkeeper at MSV Dulsburg and spearheaded the Azkals' goalless draw against Bahrain last week.
Etheridge concedes the decision is purely with Bristol manager McGhee.
"In all honesty, it's going to be down to the manager. I don't really want to get involved. It'll be a last minute decision if anything," he said.
Even if he cannot make the biennial tournament, Etheridge said the Philippines is strong enough without him.
"Considering the recent result we got against Kuwait and the way we play our football now – definitely, I think that we’re a stronger force in Southeast Asia," Etheridge said.
"There are three great games in the group stage, so we'll have to perform every single game, but the depth we have in our squad now is a lot stronger than it has been in previous years," he added.
"It is good because it gives coach a hard decision, but also at the same time we can rotate the squad."
Etheridge has helped the Bristol Rovers move away from the League Two relegation zone into 20th place. He has so far played in six league games, notching a record of three wins, two losses and one draw.
Bristol Rovers gave Etheridge his professional league debut and he is pleased with the progress he is making at the club.
"I've had a good start to my loan move and I wanted to extend it, so it's time for me to gain more experience and get some league games under my belt," he said.
Etheridge's last game for Fulham came last December in the Europa League against Denmark’s Odense BK.

Pachanga shocks Loyola; Global clinches q'final seat
By Alder Almo
Pachanga pulled off a shocking reversal against the fancied Loyola Meralco Sparks, 2-1, Saturday night to move on top of Group C in the 2012 United Football League Cup at the University of Makati football field.
Pachanga atoned for its stinging 0-1 defeat to Nomads on an own goal last Tuesday by cashing in on its chances in the second half.
Against the Sparks, who welcomed the return of their national players including the Younghusband brothers, Pachanga leaned on two second half goals for the upset win.
After Korean Byeong Yeol Jeong’s goal gave Loyola the lead before halftime, Ernest Appiah hit the equalizer for Pachanga in the 59th minute.
Ariel Zerrudo found the back of the net 11 minutes later for the lead which Pachanga held on against the charging Sparks. It was a sorry loss for the Sparks, who had 19 on target but could only make one against Pachanga’s nine on target.
Pachanga went on top of Group C with six points and hold a one-goal difference against Nomads with similar six points but with a game on hand.
Loyola remained at third spot with three points on a 1-win, 1-loss card.
Earlier, Global clinched the first seat in the quarterfinals by rounding up their elimination campaign in Group A with its third win against a lone draw.
Global shook off a scoreless first half and leaned on Alex Obiang’s brace for the 4-nil win over Phil. Navy. Izzo El Habib started the flurry of goals for Global at the start of the second half. A minute later, Obiang followed suit and connected one more in the 51st minute.
Kevin Umberto Capolei capped off the blistering win by Global with a goal of his own seven minutes later.
The Navymen never recovered from that four-goal wave by Global in a just a span of 13 minutes.
Pasargad, meanwhile, dealt Team Soccerroo another ruthless blanking, 8-0, in the other Group A action.
Team Soccerroo, which is coming off a 0-11 beating at the hands of Global last Tuesday, sank deeper in the bottom of Group A with their third straight loss.
Masood Shedideh scored five of Pasargad’s eight goals to vault on top of the scoring leaders with a total of seven followed by El Habib’s six.
Pasargad are in a neck-and-neck battle with newcomer Gen. Trias International for the second quarterfinals seat in Group A. Pasargad (6 points on 2-0-1 win-draw-loss card) is trailing Gen. Trias (7 points on 2-1-0 win-draw-loss card) by a solitary point in the standings but could jump ahead with a win in their Oct. 30 showdown.
