Cash prizes, trophies and medals await the winners of the Holcim Philippines-backed bootfest presented in cooperation with the city government of Davao. (MLSA )

The RP squad had the first shot at the goal but Norway had a better look by scoring a 1-0 lead. That was first time in the nationals' last seven games not to open the scoring.
Norway controlled the game's momentum with its hard charging physical play, taking advantage of their size and strength which downed RP's leading scorer and defender Hammid Pasion with a serious ankle injury.
Pasion's injury has seriously affected the nationals rotation however has proven that they are a team as teammates Leopoldo Aragon, Abdula Pasion, and Toni Mark Arenal scored consecutive goals to give the country a 3-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, Bacoleño Aragon anchored the team's effort to control the game as Norway scored on a penalty. But Aragon sealed the victory for RP squad's victory with a brilliant move and strike in the left corner of the net.
Team Philippines finished with 9-3 clip and settled 25th place over-all of the 64 teams, improving the team's world ranking from last year's 39th place.

RP soccer team in search of air fare for tourney
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines –Members of the Special Olympics national soccer team from this city have what their trainers say is a strong potential to bring glory to the Philippines when they compete with other teams from 18 Asian countries next month.
But with barely a month to go before the Oct. 26-31 Special Olympics soccer tournament in Dili, Timor Leste, parents and trainers of the team are in a frantic search for the P610,000 air fare and allowances for its eight members, two coaches and a national head of delegation.
“We solicited [money] from various government agencies and private organizations but we were able to raise only P7,400 so far,” Marie Palaruan, a parent helping solicit funds for the team, told the Inquirer.
She said Easter College gave them P5,000 while Mayor Mauricio Domogan gave P1,500. At least P900 was pooled from various donors.
“We are now banking on Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to help [pay for] the team’s air fare to Dili and other expenses,” said Palaruan.

Cebu Football - ANS survives Springdale
BOYS 17 defending champions Abellana National School (ANS) Pomeroy escaped a tough challenge put up by Springdale for a 3-2 victory yesterday in the 13th Aboitiz Football Cup at the Aboitiz Sportsfield at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.
Springdale, which retained five of its players who saw action in the Palarong Pambansa in Tarlac and one RP U14 member who saw action in Malaysia last June, is becoming ANS Pomeroy's archrival in the game.
It was Springdale who thwarted ANS in last year's Cebu City Olympics and went on to represent the city in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet and Central Visayas in the Palaro, a role often played by the ANS.
Springdale, though, lambasted ANS in other divisions with a 4-1 win in the Boys 12 and 7-0 rout in the Boys 14.
In the second game of the Boys 17, Cebu International School (CIS) posted its second win in the tournament, this time at the expense of Blessed John, 6-1.
HUGE ROUT
The surprise of the day came from the Boys 12 division wherein the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) 1 inflicted a 23-0 onslaught of the Subangdaku Football Club (SFC).
DBTC 1 had waxed hot in the first half with 10 goals then went on to frustrate SFC with 13 more goals in the second half.
The other match saw DBTC 2 blanking NGLIS 7-0.
In the Boys 14, CIS scored a 3-1 win over Blessed John, while MTI brushed off the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 2-0.
In the Players 10, DBTC B sailed past DBTC D, 2-0, DBTC E routed CIS, 6-0, Giuseppe Fc shamed DBTC A, 12-0, and SHS-AdC edged DBTC B, 4-2.
The Players 8 division saw DBTC B squeaking past DBTC D, 3-2, DBTC 1 dominating Giuseppe FC, 8-2, and DBTC 3 blanking DBTC A, 3-0. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON

Homeless World Cup - Philippines win final against Norway
The match started at a high tempo, with both keepers tested in the early stages.
Norway then took the lead through a powerful strike from Lund into the bottom corner.
Both sides battled hard to retain possession, and Philippines' woes were increased when star striker Pasion suffered an injury following a robust challenge.
They didn't let this phase them however, and were back on level terms soon after when Aragon outwitted the Norwegian defender with a faked shot before burying the ball in the corner.
Philippines then introduced a second Pasion who had an immediate impact with two goals in a matter of minutes, the first a lovely placed finish past the Norwegian goalkeeper.
The Philippines missed the chance to extend their lead when Aragon blasted a penalty wide and the half-time score remained 3-1.
Norway came out after the break with renewed energy and signalled their intentions with a goal from Hansen straight after kick off.
They now began to boss the game and Pedersen's dancing feet started to open up the Philippines defence. A well worked goal levelled the score at 3-3, and it seemed as if the Scandinavians would go on to take the lead.
The Philippines were undeterred however, and snatched victory right at the death when a long ball was chased down by Maravilla who rifled a shot underneath the goalkeeper.

Mindanao booter happy with RP national team
MINDANAO's lone booter in the Philippine men's national football team, Peter Jaugan, is contented and happy with the way his career is going.
Jaugan, 27, was born in North Cotabato but he finished his college education at the University of Mindanao (UM) in 2004 with a degree in Commerce Major in Management.
He became a national team member sometime in 2002.
"I'm happy to be a national athlete. This is very fulfilling for me to be able to play for our country," Jaugan said in the vernacular in an interview before the team, which conducted a 10-day training camp in Davao City, left for Manila on Thursday afternoon.
He also said that he thinks highly of his teammates and their new British coach Simon Alexander Mcmenemy.
He added, "I am very happy that the team has a new coach whose tactics may be simple but he is very thorough on the basics. That's really helping us a lot. He carries the team to a higher level of commitment and morale. We are confident to finish strong in our upcoming tournaments."
He said half-bred and Filipino players are jelling well together lately.
Jaugan, however, was injured in one of the friendly matches they played with local teams. But he said he will heal soon enough and that there's no cause for worry.
The team is back in Manila and will stay there for a few days before flying to Taiwan to play a series of exhibition games in preparation for the AFF Qualifiers set in Vientiane, Laos next month.

RP booters inspire Davao kids in visit
LOCAL football got a major boost with the arrival of the entire Philippine men's football team and its coaching staff in Davao City for a 10-day training session that was highlighted by entertaining matches, dramatic events and an admirable gesture that inspired football players and the sport's enthusiasts no end, especially the young booters in this part of the land.
And since it's not every day that a Philippine team, in any sport for that matter, holds camp in Davao, the Davao Football Association (DFA), young players and their parents grabbed the golden opportunity by playing a great host and mingling with the squad members mentored by British coach Simon Alexander McMenemy and led by the Filipino-British Younghusband brothers -- James and Phil.
What a wonderful week for Davao football as the national players displayed their skills right before the eyes of the local fans, conducted clinics for the youngsters and visited schools that had the pupils screaming at the top of their voices just at the mere sight of the players, most specially the Younghusband brothers.
The players obliged for autographs and had their photos taken with the kids and their parents, who inched their way just to get near them and whenever they had the chance all throughout the nationals' stay in Davao.
The DFA, led by its president Rafael "Pops" Vilela, helped arrange the three friendly matches played by the RP booters and it was indeed interesting to watch them play against the local players.
The RP squad won all of them, but it has to endure the tough challenge mounted by the University of Mindanao, Hooligans FC and local club champion Medvil FC. But more than the games, the camaraderie and friendship between the competing teams flourished in the end.
Just after taking a brunch at Bai Lim's Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge, McMeneny was asked on the team's status after the drill in Davao and was quick with his reply.
"It's been great. The players have become very responsible and the team very conpetitive in the past three friendly games," McMenemy said.
That was a few hours before the players check out at Casa Letesia where they had been staying and head to the Davao International Airport to catch an afternoon flight back to Manila.
But McMenemy and his players attested that what made their stay in Davao even more wonderful was because of the hospitality extended by the people.
"The friendliness of the people of Davao really helped the team. There's been fantastic reception wherever we go. It was heartwarming," McMenemy said.
The Davao stopover had to end and the RP players had to break camp as it embarks on more practice sessions in Manila and Taiwan for a big competition in Laos.
They may have left, but their wisdom will forever remain in the hearts and minds of the young Davao players who are headed for their own battle as they grow up.

The Davao stopover had to end and the RP players had to break camp as it embarks on more practice sessions in Manila and Taiwan for a big competition in Laos.
They may have left, but their wisdom will forever remain in the hearts and minds of the young Davao players who are headed for their own battle as they grow up.

AFC U-19 Women`s - Philippines lose to Uzbekistan
Philippines lost 0-4 to Uzbekistan in AFC U-19 Women`s Championship qualifiers .
The match was played in Makati.
Philippines lost also the first match against Myanmar and finished last in group.
AFC website match summary
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine team suffered its second straight defeat, bowing to the taller and heftier Uzbekistan squad, 4-0, in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Women’s Championship Group A Qualifiers (Round 1) held recently at the University of Makati football field.
Though dwarfed in size, the RP squad gamely battled the Uzbekistan squad in the first half as the Uzbeks took only a 1-0 halftime despite dominating the game with their precise passing.
But lack of international exposure told heavily on the Nationals as they yielded three more goals in the second half to finish the qualifying tournament organized by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and backed by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) without scoring a goal.
Still, the Nationals can take pride for their gutsy performance, especially from goal keeper Inna Kristianne Palacios who made several great saves that prevented their rivals from scoring more goals.
The Nationals also lost to Myanmar, 5-0.
Meanwhile, the PFF family mourned the death of many-time national team member Danny Wieneke.. He was 72.

RP team now more united, inspired
THE Philippine men's football team left for Manila Friday afternoon more united, so inspired and rich in wonderful experience after holding a brief 10-day training camp in Davao City.
The team's newly-acquired British coach Simon Alexander Mcmenemy said his players had really changed a lot and he was just happy to have them practiced in Davao.
"It's been great. The players have become very responsible and the team had been very competitive in the past three friendly games we played against the local teams here," Mcmenemy said in an interview at the Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge Friday morning.
Aside from having a great training, McMenemy said the team had appreciated the warm welcome extended by the people, especially the football-playing children and their parents and friends.
"The friendliness of the people of Davao really helped the teams. There's been a fantastic reception wherever we go. Seeing a lot of children who welcomed us at Sakya Philippine Academy yesterday was very heartwarming. It was really a very good memory. With many enthusiasts and players here, football can really be very popular in this city," McMenemy said.
Filipino-British player James Joseph Younghusband echoed his coach, saying the Davao camp went very well.
"We're more bonded now. While before we just meet three to four times a week to train, spending 10 days with my teammates here helped us to know each other better. It's also amazing to see a lot of kids enthusiastic about football. I'm looking forward to come back," Yonghusband said.
His brother Philip James added, "It's been a good preparation we had here for our future international meet. We have become more united now as a team."
Philip also said the friendly matches also helped them in their preparations.
"I really didn't expect that the Davao teams we played here the past days were very competitive. I thought we would win against them with huge score difference but I was proven wrong. The Davao players are tough and they really work so hard, showing the real strength of the Filipinos," Philip Younghusband said.
"Davao has a lot of football enthusiasts including school kids. I think even my short times with them are my most memorable experience," he added.
Assistant coach Edwin Cabalida said he's happy that half-bred and Filipino players jelled together in an out of the field.
"We have been overwhelmed by the warm reception here as well. I've never been to a city where the national team would be mobbed for autographs and photo opportunities. We just experienced it here in Davao. Football is really popular here as it had been in Iloilo in the past," Cabalida said.
Team co-captain Emelio "Chipi" Caligdong said their games went well. "It was only the last game with Medvil though that we really played more intensely. Our experience here is a good preparation for our upcoming competition," he said.
"I've got to taste durian for the first time and I love it. It's so delicious. Tasting durian was my most memorable experience in Davao," Caligdong added.
Dipolog natives Jerry Barbaso and Michael Aubrey Atienza along with Iligan-born Kristopher John Relucio cited their zip line experience at Outland Adventure as unforgettable.
"It was our first zip line experience. It was so scary but we managed to cross and it was very fulfilling. In the hotel that we stayed, we were paired with half-bred Filipinos so we were able to bond more. It's been a great team building we have here in Davao," Barbaso said.
The team, managed by Dan Stephen Palami, is staying for five days in Manila before going to Taiwan for a series of friendly competitions. The nationals are preparing for their stint in the AFF Suzuki Cup Qualifiers in Vientiane, Laos on October 22 to 27.

Players get warm welcome in Ateneo visit
WILD cheers greeted the Philippine men's national football team during a short visit at the Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) Matina campus Friday morning.
The RP players and the coaching staff were welcomed by some students upon entering the campus, while hundreds more were waiting for them at the school's sports complex.
It even took a few minutes to get the eager crowd seated as most of them joined the team at the stage asking for autographs and photo souvenirs.
When the students were seated, head coach Simon Alexander Mcmenemy was given the chance to talk.
Mcmenemy acknowledged the students, who were seated in groups and identified by the different colors of their shirts. The children waved their hands in response to his greetings.
McMenemy then asked who among the students play football. When only a few raised their hands, he encouraged them, "Play football. It's a great sport to learn especially for Filipinos."
He also asked who play basketball and addressed those who raised their hands to try football as well. He called one student who doesn't play football to join him on the stage and asked him why he doesn't play.
The student said he doesn't know the sport but Coach Mcmenemy encouraged him to learn football.
Philip James Younghusband, the most popular to the kids among his other teammates, also inspired the students to play football.
"Play football. It's a great game!" Younghusband said.
After the short messages, the team signed autographs and obliged themselves for pictorial. Ateneo teachers and non-teaching staff also had their pictures taken with the team.
The team members then boarded two passenger jeepneys to bring them back to Casa Leticia Ecoland and were scheduled to check out at 12 noon and catch their 3 p.m. flight to Manila.

Homeless World Cup - Philippines beat Norway !
The Philippines raced into an early 2-0 lead thanks to some great buold up that split the Norwegian defence apart but it did not take long for the Norwegians to muscle their way back into the game with an expertly taken goal by Lund. The game ebbed and flowed for the rest of the half with the Philipino players providing a masterclass in ball retention. The Norwegians were more direct on the ball and continued to move the play with a rushed tempo. This perhaps lead to them tiring under the sun and the Philipines exploited this with a second half attack that led to what ended up being the winner. Pasion continued his fine form in the tournament to slip the ball past Norway's strong keeper. The Scandinavians pulled one back but a two goal deficit meant that there was norway back and it was crowd favourites Phillipines who took the points.
Cebu Football - UV fights for survival in Cesafi football
FORMER champion University of the Visayas (UV) will fight for its survival when it takes on defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate football at the University of san Carlos (USC)-Technological Center field.
UV, which won the title in 2005, sits at the bottom of the standings with one point after drawing USC, 2-2, last Sept. 12.
The University of Southern Philipines Foundation (USPF), which got routed in its first game against USC last Sept. 5, is now the surprise leader with six points.
After losing its first game, USPF beat USJ-R and the University of Cebu (UC).
USC is second with four points, while USJ-R and UC both have three points but USJ-R is third on goal difference.
With only one point in three matches, UV has to win against USJ-R to make the final four and overtake UC in the standings.
The game against USJ-R is UV’s final assignment in the elimination round, while the four other teams will have another game on Oct. 3, giving them more chance to move up
the ranking.
On Oct. 3, UC will take on USPF, while USJ-R will face USC.
If UV loses this Sunday, it will be eliminated and the two Oct. 3 games will only be for positioning for the semifinal round.
The No. 1 team will take on the No. 4, while the No. 3 and No. 4 will suqare off.

RP winds up Davao training
THE Philippine men's football team got another stiff challenge from a local champion club in its final friendly match, but will depart for Manila today full of sweet memories from its brief stay in Davao City.
The RP squad completed its 10-day training camp in the City of Durian with a 5-1 victory over Medvil FC, needing excellent performances from captain Ali Borromeo and James Younghusband to pull through in the end after a tight first half.
Borromeo scored on a penalty kick as the Filipino booters held a 1-0 lead at the half, then scored again in the second half from short range to make it 2-0.
Younghusband, Emelio "Chipi" Caligdong and Nestorio Margarse added a goal each to complete the scoring parade for the RP team.
Allan Ray Fernandez averted a shutout when he scored on a spot kick just before the game ended to the cheers of the spectators, who braved the scorching heat of the sun just to see the nationals and their local stars play Wednesday afternoon at the Tionko field.
On Thursday, RP British coach Simon Alexander McMenemy and some members of the team appeared during ABC-CBN Davao's morning show "Maayong Buntag Mindanao and conducted a clinic for the coaches as part of their final-day activities before closing camp.
The team also took lunch at the Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge owned by avid football supporter Bai Lim and was scheduled to visit the Lon Wa Buddhist Temple and the Philippine Academy of Sakya along Cabaguio Avenue Thursday afternoon.
"I love Davao and I definitely want to go back here," said the 24-year-old James Younghusband, one of the two Filipino-British booters in the RP team. The other one is Philip, 23, who plays the midfield.
Philip missed the last match after hurting his right ankle in the team's second friendly match against the Hooligans FC.
McMenemy said they liked it in Davao and his players got what they came for and that is to have a taste of Davao football.
McMeneny was impressed with his boys's performance in the three matches that they played here, although he admitted in a recent sports forum that they need to improve on their defense.
"On defense I think we have to to be a little bit tighter," McMenemy said.
The RP booters scored a total of 20 goals in three matches while conceding only three, two on penalty kicks and one during a breakaway. The national squad earlier beat University of Mindanao, 6-0, and Hooligans, 9-2.
The team will stay for six days in Manila before flying to Taiwan for another series of friendly competitions there.
Mcmeney is hoping that his team should be well-prepared in time for the AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers set from Oct. 22 to 27 in Laos.

UFL Looks Forward to Exciting Times Ahead
by Josue Jamlang
It’s only three weeks until the United Football League gets underway once again, with the LBC-UFL Cup kicking things off on October 16. The Football Alliance held a general meeting on Wednesday, where there was plenty of exciting news revealed to the 19 clubs that were present.
With the goal of giving football more exposure in the country, the FA was very pleased to reveal that there will be a weekly 30-minute football program airing on Balls TV – a sports channel on Sky Cable. The UFL will be featured regularly on the show, making it much easier for football enthusiasts to get a glimpse of just how intense and entertaining the competition is.
It was also announced that the First Division clubs will be receiving much higher allowances this season, signs that the league is successfully moving towards making football a legitimate professional sport in the country. The new revelation should be exciting news for all those eager for the beautiful game to develop in the nation, as more funding will certainly lead to better quality on the field. While it is the First Division that will be reaping the benefits of a bigger budget next season, the Second Division will surely become more competitive, as the incentive of bigger finances starts to play a role in their motivation for promotion.
The groups for the LBC-UFL Cup were also finalized on the night, throwing up some interesting matchups between both First and Second Division clubs. Group D looks to be the one that’s going to generate the most attention, as top tier clubs Union, Loyola and newly promoted Global are all bunched together.
These are exciting times for football in the country, as the United Football League aims to take the sport to new heights in the 2010/11 season.

Myanmar Routs RP XI
Game Friday (University of Makati field)
3 p.m. — Uzbekistan vs Philippines
MANILA, Philippines —The Philippine team put on a courageous fight but still suffered a stinging 1-4 defeat to the more experienced and composed Myanmar squad in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Women’s Championship Group A Qualifiers (Round 1) Wednesday at the University of Makati football field.
The Nationals yielded only one goal in the first half but the physically stronger and technically better Myanmar squad intensified its attack in the second half to score four more goals and complete its domination over the RP squad.
So tough were Myanmar players that three RP girls were carried out on stretcher due to their aggressive plays in the event organized by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
“My players gave their best but we certainly lack match exposure and that showed,” said coach Alfredo Estacion.
With the loss, the Nationals need a huge win over the taller and heftier Uzbekistan squad in today’s 3 p.m. showdown to have a fair chance of advancing to the second round.

RP booters play Medvil
THE Philippine men's football team plays its third and last friendly match today in Davao City sans Filipino-British midfielder Philip James Younghusband, who got injured in last Sunday's game at the Tionko field.
The 23-year-old Younghusband sprained his right ankle in that match won by the RP squad over Hooligans FC, 9-2, and will be forced to sit out the match this afternoon against champion team Medvil FC starting at 4 p.m.
"I was going for the ball when I hurt my ankle early in the second half. I'm not playing tomorrow," Younghusband told Sun.Star Davao Tuesday morning at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.
Without their top man at the middle, the Filipino booters are still installed the heavy favorite over Medvil under coach Ramonito Carreon.
Simon Alexander McMenemy, the British coach of the RP team, said today will be their last friendly match in their brief 10-day training camp in the City of Durian.
McMenemy said after today's game they will hold two more practice sessions on Thursday before wrapping up their Davao workout.
The team, which will leave for Manila on Sept. 24, is preparing for the Suzuki Cup set this October in Laos.
McMenemy said they held their training camp in Davao to avoid distractions and was impressed with their practice sessions here.
The RP squad led by McMenemy and players Philip and his elder brother James, captain Ali Borromeo and Chipi Caligdong also conducted a clinic for some 200 kids at the Deca Homes Resort Residence field in Barangay Tacunan, Tugbok District last Sept. 18.
The RP team first played University of Mindanao last Friday and was held to a scoreless first half before erupting with six goals in the second half for a 6-0 win.
Philip Younghusband starred in that match with two goals, but his injurty will leave his brother James, Borromeo, Caligdong and Peter Jaugan of Davao City to carry the load for the team today.

RP Booters vs Myanmar in Qualifying Tilt
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine team goes for an all-important win when it battles Myanmar this Wednesday in the three-nation AFC Under-19 Women’s Championship Qualifying Round 1 at the University of Makati football field.
The RP Under-19 squad has trained long and extra hard for the event but is expected to face stiff competition from Myanmar which gave Uzbekistan a big scare before bowing out, 1-0, last Monday.
Game time is set at 3:30 p.m.
But the biggest test for the Alfredo Estacion-mentored RP Under-19 squad will be on Friday when it collides against the taller and heftier Uzbekistan squad in the event organized by the Philippine Football Federation, headed by Jose Mari Martinez.
Philippine Sports Commission, now headed by Richie Garcia, is backing the event.
Kyra Tagbo and Mara Sabanal are the team’s captains.
Hong Kong – the fourth team – begged off from taking part in the tournament due to the travel ban imposed by Hong Kong authorities in the aftermath of the hostage fiasco at Luneta the claimed the lives of eight Hong Kong tourists.
The No. 1 team in the single-round play advances to the second round slated late this year.

Homeless World Cup - It's more than football for Team Philippines
Ronald Patulin and Elmer Bedia the coaches of Team Philippines share the importance of the Homeless World Cup to them and their players
They spoke of the excitement of arriving in Rio and the importance of their visit: 'For Team Phillipines this means more than football, this is our opportunity to voice the issue of homelessness which is ignored in the Philippines.' said Ronald.
'The majority of the Philippines team live in shanty accommodation often living with their families in cramped conditions.' he added.
Elmer, who was an ex-professional footballer in Australia and works as a team consultant, helps with training and advice for the players. He is confident of the impact the Homeless World Cup has on his players.
'Taking part in this event is the focus by which we can change lives through football.' he said.
'Many of our players have improved their lives already and will take up scholarships when they return home.'
Good luck Philippines.

RP overpowers University of Mindanao
THE University of Mindanao (UM) engaged the Philippine men's football side in a fierce battle and held its ground against clearly the more superior team Friday afternoon at the Tionko grounds.
That was only for 45 minutes.
The national team, with Filipino-British brothers Philip James and James Joseph Younghusband providing the fireworks, breezed through in the second half with six goals to finally defeat the home team in an entertaining friendly match that ended just before sundown.
"We have to get better and better. We were able to achieve what we trained for and I'm happy with the result. We have some good looks on the goal and it was just a tough team out there," said the national team's British coach Simon Alexander McMenemy at the end of the match.
Philip James Younghusband and veteran Yanti Bersales scored two goals each and Ruel Gener added one for the RP team. The other goal was an own goal that made it 6-0.
Philip James opened scoring with a right-footed blast inside the box off a pass from Emelio Caligdong early in the second half, then added another one from the same spot but this time using his left foot for a 2-0 lead.
The back-to-back goals instantly demoralized the UM booters, who matched the nationals' energy in the first half but only to succumb in the end in the face of the searing attack from the visitors.
The RP team actually dominated the match right from the opening whistle with excellent plays especially from the Younghusband brothers and Calidong, but just couldn't break the UM defense.
The RP booters had at least 12 chances to score in the first half but the outstanding play of keeper Jeffrey Albon kept them from finding the net.
Albon had two great saves--one when he hopped high to thwart a Philip James bullet shot from way out and another when he stopped the same player on a one-on-one situation.
The RP-UM showdown was witnessed by officials of the Davao Football Association (DFA), players from the different schools in the city and their coaches and parents.
The event also turned into a fan day when the young players and their parents had their photos taken with the RP players right after the match. There wa also autograph signing by some of the stars like the Younghusband brothers and coaches McMenemy and Edwin Cabalida.
The RP team opened its 10-day training camp in Davao City as it prepares for the AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers set in Vientiane, Laos on October 22 to 27.
The national team was scheduled to play the Hooligans FC on Sunday. On September 23, team will battle multi-titled Medvil FC.
Medvil's prized goalkeeper Dominador Tato IV of Emar Learning Center played for the national team during the second half Friday.

Cebu Football - League-leader ANS faces DB today
The Abellana National School (ANS) Pomeroy hopes to pad its lead when it goes up against the Don Bosco (DB) Boys Home as the 13th Aboitiz Football Cup resumes today at the Aboitiz Sportsfield at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.
The ANS Pomeroy currently leads the Boys 17 division with 3 points and a goal difference of 2 after tournament officials awarded them the game last weekend when their opponent, the FCIC Lapu-Lapu, walked out with 38 seconds left and the score tied at 1-all.
Based on the ground rules, the Cebu Football Association (CFA) which handles the tournament not only ruled the match 2-0 in favor of ANS Pomeroy, it also banned the FCIC Lapu-Lapu Boys 17 squad for three years from all CFA-sanctioned tournaments.
ANS Pomeroy coached by Francis Ramirez is also missing two of its players, midfielder John Rey Nieves and defender Joeford Dolino, who were meted one-year suspension from all CFA-sanctioned tournaments for punching their opponents during the Treadtel Cup 2010 held last July.
However, Recaredo Borgonia, regional director of the Department of Education Central Visayas (DepEd-7), declared that both boys will be allowed to compete in the Cebu City Olympics and the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet which will be handled by the CFA. But he clarified that should any football player err in scholastic, whatever disciplinary action the CFA deems appropriate will be recognized by the DepEd.
Meanwhile, the other Boys 17 match will played between Cebu International School (CIS) and FECINU.

Suspended ANS booters may still see action in DepEd-7 tournaments
REGIONAL director Recaredo Borgonia of the Department of Education in Central Visayas (DepEd-7) said it is premature to say that players who are meted suspensions by the Cebu Football Association (CFA) will not be able to compete in the Cebu City Olympics and the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet.
Borgonia refused to issue a statement except to say that “The CFA is not the DepEd and the DepEd is not the CFA.”
CFA president Richard Montayre and Borgonia confirmed that the football events of this year's City Olympics and the CVIRAA meet will be sanctioned by the CFA.
According to Borgonia, they have yet to find out whether these players deserved the punishment. To do that, they have to look into all angles of the issue.
Ricky Ballesteros, the newly appointed chairman of the DepEd Sports Committee Cebu City Division, said he was surprised with the development.
He said this is the first time he heard of a local sporting association sanctioning one of the events of a multi-level scholastic athletic competition conducted by the DepEd.
Ballesteros said that they have not received any communication informing them of the tie-up between the CFA and the DepEd.
“Our aim is to send the best athletes in regional and national competitions. If that is the case, then we would also conduct our own investigation,” said Ballesteros adding “there should be an independent investigative body, not just members of the CFA.”
He said CFA cannot insist of implementing their decision because they are not part of the CFA nor is the City Olympics and the CVIRAA solely organized by the CFA.

Ex-CFA top ref hits football body
Majority of the Cebu football referees have separated from the Cebu Football Association (CFA) and decided to form their own independent group.
Ruben Remedio, long-time president of the Cebu football referees, confirmed the move saying they have formalized the break-off with the CFA last month.
“We have decided to be independent of the CFA because we no longer understand its current administration. We no longer want to be handled by them, we don't agree with some of their rules,” Remedio said.
One of the things the referees are not in agreement with the CFA is the collection of sanction fees from tournament organizers. He said he does not understand is why the CFA would not allow them to officiate in a tournament whose organizer cannot pay the sanction fee.
“We are here for the development of football so we should be allowed to officiate whether or not the organizer pays the sanction fee,” Remedio said.
He also cited unexplained money issues such as being made to pay P100 for identification cards which not all received.
Remedio also laments the fact that there is no development or growth for Cebu referees because they are not included in the seminars conducted by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) being associated with the CFA.
The CFA and the PFF has an ongoing disagreement which stemmed from money issues.Remedio said they would come up with their own by laws. He also relinquished his role as president, opting to be the group's adviser. The Cebu referees currently have Michael Culibra as its officer-in-charge.
CFA president Richard Montayre confirmed the separation saying that they have made the referees sign that they are no longer under the CFA.
The reason for this is because there cannot be two groups of football referees. A handful of the referees have decided to stay with the CFA.
According to Montayre, a group of referees which is not under a football association is not recognized because no one can penalize them if they commit mistakes. It is also not possible for them to be directly under the PFF, he said.

Limpag: Graeme, Manfred and local football
FEW years ago, Manfred Schuwerk e-mailed our former sports editor to comment on Australian football guru Graeme Mackinnon’s coaching style.
He was quite harsh about the way Graeme complained to the refs and shouted at his players regularly, saying it showed Graeme wasn’t a good coach.
I’ve seen Graeme coach and he’s good. He also screamed a lot. And he can be really noisy, especially against a player whom he knows isn’t taking the game seriously.
He can also be funny. A striker who forces his way to shoot righty gets an “OY, NO
LEFT FOOT?” Then he’d show that striker how to kick with his left, “ANA O” with that distinct Australian twang.
Imagine hearing “SUS REFFF!!!!” or “WALA KITA REF?” shouted with an Australian accent. That’s Graeme.

Villaflor: Trouble in football paradise
By Noel S. Villaflor
Noel Villaflor

THE Cebu Football Association (CFA) is fighting a war on two fronts: against the PFF leadership at the capital and against football stakeholders in its own backyard.
The first war is less arduous as the CFA wages it alongside a good number of disgruntled FAs all over the country, and should culminate in the Board of Directors assembly next weekend in Manila.
The second one—against an uprising that has snowballed—could prove more damaging to the board.

RP booters train in Davao
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
THE Philippine men's football team opened its 10-day training camp in Davao City and will start off with friendly games and clinics on the side as the members prepare for the AFF Suzuki Cup Qualifiers set in Vientiane, Laos on Oct. 22 to 27.
The national team will play the Seagull-Porky's Best Lechon at 4 p.m. today at the Tionko football grounds, then battles Hooligans FC on Sunday. The team's next match will be opposite multi-titled Medvil FC on Sept. 23.
Medvil's prized goalkeeper Dominador Tato IV, an Emar student, will reinforce the national team during the friendly games.
British coach Simon Alexander McMenemy, gracing the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn yesterday, said they are here to sharpen the skills of the players and at the same time let them enjoy football.
"For the past three weeks now, I've assessed our players and the coaching staff. We are doing great with our preparations. Holding camps in other cities like beautiful Davao helps us in creating a team environment and improve the team spirit," McMenemy said.
He said it is important for him that the players enjoy their training and bringing them in a new place is part of achieving that goal. He also would like the players to share good memories together while having fun playing football.
Team manager Dan Stephen Palami said that the team also held camps in Tacloban City and a brief stint in Cebu before coming to Davao.
"I must admit Davao is a great place for the team to train. There are not too many distractions just like in Manila," Palami said.
"We are not just here to play football though but we are also here to conduct kids and coaching clinics as part of our social responsibility. We want to inspire more children to get to play football," Palami added.
Team captain Alexander Charles Luis Borromeo said he's happy their preparations went full swing for eight months now.
"I've been with the team for six years and this is the only time that we experience a full preparation. The team is complete and is ready to play the best teams in the Qualifers like Thailand and Singapore. I think next month will be the real test on where these preparations are leading us," Borromeo said.
Assistant coach Edwin Cabalida said having started training the team since January was the longest preparation they ever had for a big event.
"Two years ago, we competed in the Suzuki Cup with only three weeks of training. We lost in our game and never got the chance to advance in the tournament at all. I am confident it will be a way different in Laos this time," the Filipino coach said.
Co-team captain Emelio Caligdong, a native of Iloilo, thanked Palami for all his support, saying that bringing McMenemy to the team made a lot of difference even for somebody like him who have been with the team since 2000.
Completing the team roster are Robert James Gier, Jason Nicolas Maria de Jong, Manuel Ott, Ian Araneta, Yanti Barsales, Eduard Sacapano, Jerry Barbaso, Neil Etheridge, Kristopher John Relucio, Anton del Rosario, Roxy Bongbong Dorlas, Ruel Gener, Mark Ferrer, Reymark Palmes, Nestorio Margarse, Michael Aubrey Atienza, Matthew Hartmann; Jose Alfe Caminos, Christopher Nicholas Camcam, Ray Johnson, Joebel Bermejo, Ralph Kock, Stephen Markus Shrock, Gino Pavone, Fil-British brothers Philip James and James Joseph Younghusband, Jerry Lucena and M'lang native Peter Jaugan.
McMenemy, meanwhile, said he will hold the free clinic for youth players on Saturday at the Deca Homes Resort and Residences (DHRR) soccer field at 2 p.m. and the coaches clinic on Sept. 23 at the Tionko field at 8 a.m.

Cebu Football - CFA bans FCIC 17 for 3 years
THE Cebu Football Association (CFA) board has decided to ban the FC Inter-Club (FCIC) Lapu-Lapu Boys 17 squad for three years from all CFA-sanctioned events after they walked out of their opening match against Abellana National School (ANS) Pomeroy in the 13th Aboitiz Football Cup last Saturday.
The FCIC led by team manager Manfred Schuwerk abandoned the game with the score tied at 1-all with just 38 seconds to protest a linesman’s call after FCIC's Jonathan Sabalones tackled ANS' Rogelio Castillon Jr. from behind which sent both players sprawling on the field.
Schuwerk told match officials then that they are walking out because they are being cheated by the unfair calls.
The next day, he e-mailed the CFA stating his intent to pull out two other FCIC squads, the Boys 14 and Boys 12 divisions.
Because the withdrawal was made after the event’s opening date, the CFA board has meted the FCIC Boys 14 and 12 squads six months suspension in accordance with the ground rules.
Richard Montayre, CFA president, however, said they would still wait for a formal letter of withdrawal from the FCIC.
Montayre said the suspension was based on the report made by the referees. It will be served this weekend and the FCIC will be given a month to appeal.
Schuwerk said he would wait for a copy of the decision before making a comment but initially said that “if that is their decision, then it is unacceptable.”
However, he said the CFA could say whatever they want to say and that they just don't want to have anything to do with the association anymore.
“I have already informed the PFF (Philippine Football Federation) about this. They did not even follow PFF procedures in making the decision. We should have been called and they should have questioned the referees,” Schuwerk said.
Montayre said they have been trying to reach Schuwerk and his coaches but failed.
Schuwerk maintained that the linesman had made a mistake when he intentionally changed his decision at the last minute as seen in a video of the game, which he is willing to show. According to the FCIC team manager, the linesman first called offside then changed his call to foul and penalty.
“That is cheating,” Schuwerk said, claiming that the CFA has all his numbers as well as his email address.
However, Montayre said that the FCIC did not need to walk out of the match to protest the call.
“We sent them copies of the tournament ground rules. All is stated there, punishment for a walkout and how to make a protest. If they chose not to read that then it's not our fault,” Montayre stressed.

"The football event is just among the activities lined for the celebration of our Araw ng Barangay. We recently conducted an Inter-Purok wakeboarding competition. It was really fun. We don't know how to wakeboard but we enjoyed the experience," dela Peña said in the vernacular.
Mintal barangay councilor Benedict Adan, an aide of Third District Rep. Isidro Ungab, said the football tournament will have the 14-Under categories A and B.
Entered in Group A are Mintal, Montserrat, Tacuna, University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao Tigers and Catalunan Grande B while seeing action in Group B are Medvil/Catalunan Grande A, UP Tigers B, Catalunan Grande Girls, Holy Child and Matina.
Adan said the Football Liga ng Kabataan Cong. Isidro T. Ungab Cup, meanwhile, will also resume at DHRR field on Saturday. (MLSA)

With the development of the sport of football in mind, the Football Alliance would like to proudly present six new clubs that will participate in the 2010/11 season.
Three of the clubs have been granted the privilege of participating in both the LBC-UFL Cup and the League, while the other three will only be battling it out in the former of the competitions.
Congratulations to Ilonggo United FC, Union Internacional Manila FC, and Dolphins United FC for being the three new clubs that will grace the League's Second Division - replacing Mendiola FC, Diliman FC, and United South FC.
Stallions FC, Manila Sudanese FC, and Laos FC will also be gracing the 2010/11 season, as they pit their skills against the UFL's best in the LBC-UFL Cup, which starts in mid-October.

Davao Football - Medvil captures 23-U Acer title
MULTI-titled Medvil beat Seagull-Porky's Lechon (SPL), 6-4, via penalty shootout to capture the 23-Under Acer Cup 2010 crown at the Tionko football grounds over the weekend.
Columbia crushed Kilusang Magkaibigan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (KMMPC), 8-1, for third place in the league presented by Acer Philippines in cooperation with the Davao Football Association (DFA) and Columbia Computer Center.
Medvil's Joey Arobo knocked in a goal in the fifth minute after a series of combination passes with Rhoelfred Napuran and Jomar Acedo.
SPL, however, tightened its defense as Glen Bulaquina and his teammates foiled Medvil's offensive thrusts. But SPL defender Junard Pinonggan was sent out of the game after punching Medvil striker Jomar Acedo in the 18th minute.
Clifford Dacera of SPL forced a 1-1 standoff by scoring the penalty mark in the 71st minute.
With both teams tied at the end of regulation, they engaged in the inevitable penalty shootout where Medvil prevailed, 5-3.
Medvil's Frances Jay Abrasaldo, Emmanuel Brisson, Dominador Tato IV, Napuran and Ruben Razid Said all scored as they kicked in that order.
SPL, meanwhile, scored on Emerson Roy Demegillo, Tata Benitez and Bulaquina while Jovem Benitez missed.
DFA general secretary Erwin Protacio said SPL need not have a fifth kicker, saying, "Even if SPL's last kicker will score, the team still could no longer catch up with Medvil."
The Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon-coached Medvil received a cash prize of P5,000, medals and FIFA World Cup replica trophy while runner-up SPL settled for P3,000 and medals.
Columbia got P2,000 and medals for placing third during the awarding rites graced by Acer Philippines president and country manager Manuel Wong, Columbia Computer senior sales manager Ivan John Caballero and DFA president Rafael "Pops" Vilela.
Arobo copped the most valuable player (MVP) honors and went home with a miniature FIFA World Cup replica trophy, Acer computer laptop and Nokia mobile phone.
Best goalkeeper Ruel Napuran, best defender Bulaquina and best midfielder Rhoelfred Napuran of Medvil along with best striker Francisco Iligan of SPL also received miniature FIFA World Cup replica trophies and Nokia mobile phones.
Best referee Danny Boy Fernandez, on his part, was awarded with a digital sports stop watch and Nokia mobile phone.(MLSA)

Cebu Football - FCIC pulls out of Aboitiz Cup; CFA to probe incident
By Iste S. Leopoldo
AFTER walking out of the Boys 17-Under division, FCIC Lapu-Lapu decided to pull out all three teams in the 13th Aboitiz Football Cup.
FCIC has teams in the Boys 12, 14 and 17-Under divisions.
The decision was made by team manager Manfred Schuwerk, the former Cebu Football Association (CFA) board member who led his team’s walkout during their game against the Abellana National School–Pomeroy in the Boys 17-Under last Saturday.
The match was tied at 1 when a penalty was called against FCIC-Lapu-Lapu with less than a minute left.
“The game last Saturday had a fabricated penalty decision,” Schuwerk said in an e-mail to Sun.Star Cebu. “The linesman (first signaled) offside and after that, he changed it to a foul and penalty.”
Schuwerk added he will report the incident to the Philippine Football Federation because he felt “CFA is no longer a credible football organization.”
CFA president Richard Montayre said it’s FCIC-Lapu-Lapu’s prerogative to pull out of the tournament.
“That they pull all their teams out is no problem with us because they are the ones who cannot follow basic rules,” Montayre said.
He added they will be forming a fact-finding committee which will investigate the incident so the CFA can come up with a decision.
“We will penalize them according to the CFA rules,” Montayre said.
On the other hand, ANS head coach Francis Ramirez finally received a copy of the decision banning Johnrey Nieves for one year.
“The suspension is for punching an opponent and violent conduct,” Ramirez said.
Aside from Nieves, his teammate Joeford Dolino and the University of San Carlos’s Henry Anthony were also suspended for a year from all CFA-sanctioned events.
“We will file an appeal to the CFA board this week. Harsh ra kaayo, to think they are still minors and have a lot of room for improvement. We hope ma reverse ang decision,” Ramirez said.

Cebu Football - USPF stuns USJ-R
By Edri K. Aznar
LAST week’s losers came back strong to surprise the favorites in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. collegiate football at the University of San Carlos (USC)-Technological field.
The University of the Visayas (UV) erased a two-goal deficit to draw with USC, 2-2, while the University of Southern Philippines had a strong second half to surprise defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 2-1, in the second game.
USC still leads the tournament with four points, while USPF is now third with three points behind University of Cebu. UV is fourth with a point, while the defending champion sits at the bottom.
Despite being down to 10 players after Paul dela Victoria got booked with a red card in the 20th minute, USJ-R still drew first blood due to the error of USPF goalkeeper Jaysan Galarrita.
Galarrita failed to clear the incoming ball, giving Junjun Pintuan an easy tap-in goal in the 24th.
Defender Aljohn Armamento got the equalizer for USPF with a perfectly-struck free kick in the 73rd and USPF didn’t let up with their attack.
Their efforts paid off as Joseph Rodriguez scored the winning goal in the 87th minute, off a feed from Rene Sanchez.
On the other hand, University of the Visayas (UV) salvaged a 2-2 draw with frontrunner USC after an impressive last-minute run.
USC had a commanding 2-0 lead at halftime with goals from winger Folkhanes Anthony in the 15th, and midfielder Karl Vincent Arcenas in the 40th minute. Arcenas’s goal came from a 25-yard freekick that hit the top corner.
However, UV scored a quick goal in the second half with a header from striker Juvinal Villahermosa and he struck again in the 90th for the equalizer.

Cebu Football - FCIC walks out in Aboitiz Cup
By Iste S. Leopoldo
THE OPENING day of the 13th Aboitiz Cup was hit by a controversy after FCIC-Lapu-Lapu walked out of their 17-Under match against Abellana National School at the Aboitiz Sports Field.
Though he got the win the easy way, ANS coach Francis Ramirez isn’t pleased.
The reason? ANS learned only yesterday that one of their players, Johnrey Nieves, has been suspended for a year by the Cebu Football Association (CFA).
Nieves, who helped ANS defend their title in the Milo Little Olympics football, spent the entire game on the bench after CFA referees committee chairman Eugene Ynclino told Ramirez about his suspension due to his “violent conduct” during the Tredtell Cup last summer.
“Nieves has a pending one-year suspension from the CFA board when he accumulated two red cards during the Tredtell Cup. He will not be allowed to join in all CFA-sanctioned tournaments,” Ynclino said.
Ramirez said they could have accepted the decision if they were given a letter. He said it should have been served during the opening ceremony so they can have time to file an appeal.
Nieves played in ANS’s 2-0 win over the University of Southern Philippines in the opening day of the Aboitiz Cup last Aug. 29.
“Usik-usik lang ta ug train aning mga bata-a and in the end maglingkod ra diay sila for no reason at all. The player has the right to be informed and the right to appeal,” Ramirez said.
During the game, Ynclino got another problem to solve after FCIC Lapu-Lapu walked out.
Jake Moreno scored first before Dan Marnell Villarico got the equalizer for ANS from a penalty.
FCIC Lapu-Lapu was called for another penalty in the final minute and while the referee was giving the kick, team manager and former CFA board member Manfred Shuwerk questioned the call and his team abandoned the game.
“The referees made several bad calls, the decision was unfair,” Schuwerk said.
According to Ynclino, the abandonment of FCIC-Lapu-Lapu will possibly lead to the team’s ban for the entire season.
