AMIDST turmoil in the Cebu Football Association (CFA), the CFA board’s goal is still to unite the whole football community in Cebu City.
After encountering problems with the resignation of three CFA officials—Manfred Schuwerk, Ricky Dakay and Raffy Musni—within the year and the financial issues, the CFA board plans to iron out the kinks and improve the system by listening to its members and answering the questions being raised.
“We have to go to the issues. Issues raised, issues answered,” said CFA board member Bro. Mari Aberasturi of what the board has to do to unite all the members of the CFA. “We must continue information dissemination and be open to suggestion.”
Despite some members’ distaste with the current CFA board, they also want unity between the officials and its members for the good of Cebu football.
“We are thankful for the changes. We must have teamwork between us (members) and them (CFA officials),” said Glenn Quisido, the president of the largest football club in Cebu, the Cebu Amateur Football Association.
Amended
Last Saturday, the new by-laws of the CFA were amended after 18 members agreed to it. Fourteen were against it because they thought they needed ample time to compare it to the old by-laws.
If the insurgent members of the CFA won in the voting, they would have passed a manifesto that would replace the current board because they don’t have confidence in the incumbent officials anymore.
On the other hand, the CFA has replaced the three board members with new officials who were voted by the board amongst themselves, a rule that was written in the old by-laws if a board member resigns.
The new officials of the CFA are Recarido Borgonia, Pia Monticon and Jim Carl Akiatan.

Cebu football - Villaflor: Continuity matters
THE sudden resignation of two board members last month was a big blow to the Cebu Football Association.
Shortly after the resignation, I wrote in my column (July 24 issue) that the controversy “has torn the very fabric that has bound the CFA board for the last 16 months or so.”

Cebu Football - Aboitiz matches start Aug. 30
AFTER formally opening the 12th Aboitiz Football Cup with exhibition matches last Sunday, the anticipated regular season games will finally kick off on Aug. 30 at the Aboitiz Sports Field.
The Cebu Football Association will start official games of the season with matches between teams in the age groups.
On Aug. 29, CFA will be holding a general assembly for all the teams and clubs and they will be discussing theassociation’s bylaws. This will also serve as the first annual meeting of the CFA and its members.
The CFA is considering turning the Men’s Cup into a league, with the team with the highest points winning the title.
“We are going to reconsider because it depends on the number of teams. There are teams last year that are not joining,” said CFA official Adonis Quitoy.
Few teams
Quitoy said some teams suggested turning the tournament into a league because of the scarcity of the teams that have registered for this season of the annual Aboitiz Football Cup.
CFA president Richard Montayre and other officials of the association are sorting final details of the tournament, including the participation of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football squads.
“We are inviting the five universities to join the Men’s League,” said Quitoy.
The five universities Quitoy is referring to are the Cesafi member schools, namely, the defending champions University of San Jose Recoletos, University of the Visayas, University of San Carlos, University of Cebu and University of Southern Philippines Foundation.
The CFA plans to start the Men’s League tournament as soon as the Cesafi season ends.

Cebu Football - Aboitiz Cup
Noel VillaflorFootnote
IT’S a relief to know that football action is back on the pitch.
The Aboitiz Football Cup was launched yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field with a decent lineup of exhibition matches.
However, I rue missing the opening ceremonies, especially the highlight of the event—the Under 14 exhibition between the RP team and the Cebu selection, which ended 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
I did catch two friendly games in the afternoon: between San Roque Football Club and Melborne United women’s teams, and between the USC and the USPF men’s teams. SRFC won 7-0, while USC prevailed 3-1.
In the Under 14 exhibition, the Cebu selection held their own against the nationals, drawing first blood when John Paolo Labajo of Don Bosco beat the keeper.
Slightly better ball handling proved the difference, when the nationals retaliated in the 34th minute courtesy of Luichi Clavano’s goal, and sealed the game in the second half with a strike from Jose Soriano on the 47th.
Despite the result, Bingbing Colina, who assisted veteran Glen Ramos in coaching the Cebu selection, told me he was pleased with how their team played.
The selection apparently has practiced as a team for only three sessions, while the nationals have played together for a far longer period.
The Aboitiz Cup will have a break for at least two weeks, as the San Roque Football Festival holds matches for two weekends in their home turf.
The scheduled matches for the Aboitiz Cup have yet to be announced, but what will make this season different from the previous ones is that all the games will be held in one venue:—the Aboitiz Sports Field.
Cebu Football Association president Richard Montayre cited other welcome changes as well. During the weekend matches, 10 11-a-side games will be played in a single day, apart from those played in the smaller fields.
To make this possible, the international-size field will be divided into two 100m x 65m fields, allowing for two full-side matches that will be held simultaneously, Montayre said.
With a single venue where teams and football enthusiasts congregate, the football community can expect a more festive atmosphere during the matches.
Hopefully, this season will be far better organized than the previous one.

ASEAN (AFF) U19 Championship
ASEAN (AFF) U19 Championship start today in Vietnam without Philippines .
Philippines withdrew because of swine flu or maybe other reasons?
Hopefully they will not withdraw from Asian (AFC) U19 Championship later this year, but ASEAN U19 would have been good preparations for Asian U19 .
ASEAN (U16) in Thailand was postponed/cancelled earlier because of swine flu.

Ex NT Coach Cutillas
On another matter, Cutillas said he has lost faith and confidence in the Philippine Football Federation leadership. But because of his love for the game, Cutillas mentioned he will not give up fighting to revive the sport here.
Cutillas recently submitted a proposal to PSC chairman Harry Angping to set up an academy of football, applying the blueprint of the Australian Institute of Sport. With his experience in Australian football as a coach, Cutillas said he is ready to spearhead a fresh campaign to train Filipino elite players within the age range of 17-21. The goal is to develop a core of outstanding and well-trained players for the national team.
“The academy will be a full-time commitment,” he said. “We want to quarter the players, take care of their nutrition and help in their education. Nothing is happening in football. We don’t hear what the PFF is doing. It’s a sad state of affairs. But we who love football won’t stand for this. We want to do something for football and I think the academy is a good way of bringing back interest and pride in the game.”
