I do think that the Philippines must improve the way it play esp against Sing. on Dec. 2. I always think were ahead of other asian countries in terms of hardwork and perseverance. Sadly were influenced by basketball and that hinders the progress of Phil football.

If Phil can pull a success with these tournaments that would be very rewarding...

My insights:
1. The Phil must and should control the ball, that is the most and critical part in football in which our team really lacks. Controlling the ball later create goal chances and at the main time provides additional defense.

2. I was able to watch Phil latest performance and I would say the defense is awful. I mean, the defender should communicate properly to the goalkeeper and to prevent goals the squad should pressure the offenses instead of just being defensive.

3. The squad should learn to control emotions and try to improve the ability to block the ball.

Were the underdogs against Sing but I'm certain that Phil performance will go to distance if we work really hard. We filipinos are very hardworking individuals and playing football is just part of it. That is the difference between other teamsJAGnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-78462099645100425662010-10-28T22:46:17.735+02:002010-10-28T22:46:17.735+02:00That's what I said about Jonsson. Him along with Etheridge were the most consistent.

But why would you want to put Jonsson at center mid when we don't have any other good defenders around? He's also one of the few who has any sort of pace. So he needs to be kept as a LB.

James Y. and Jonsson as a center mid pairing?? I'm sorry but that's horrible! The team will get sliced open time and time again with that midfield.

Schrock can play right wing but he mainly plays as a right back for his club. De Jong should play wide right and perhaps James Y. to play in the center since De Jong has looked better playing there. Plus he has a bit of pace.

They also need to recall the likes of Chris Greatwich and also show more effort and enthusiasm in getting players like Lucena and Wolf.HasThisBeenTakennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-50407320426383118492010-10-28T17:55:17.624+02:002010-10-28T17:55:17.624+02:00I beg to disagree on some of the assessment on Ray...I beg to disagree on some of the assessment on Ray Jonnson. He was actually one of the most consistent performers in the qualifiers. He was effective going forward and was cool and composed on defense. We need him back for December. Ray also plays multiple positions and I think we can put him at central midfield to add more toughness and some experience in that position. Manny Ott said Schrock plays right wing and right back so it will be interesting how he'll be utilized. Probably James Younghusband can move to the center to pair up with Jonnson and make way for Schrock. So that leaves us with the critical leftback position.

Our back four needs more protection from the midfield which they didn't get most of the time in the qualifiers. We're lacking pace. It wasn't that obvious in the qualifiers because we were bigger, but in Vietnam that weakness will be very evident. I hope we work on that in the next three weeks. I hope to see everyone in Hanoi. hahaha. Good luck to our team. -CEDELFAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-42662946355494014782010-10-27T20:51:11.116+02:002010-10-27T20:51:11.116+02:00Well like I said, they did their best given the ci...Well like I said, they did their best given the circumstances. Most of them were playing different roles.

De Jong & Ott -
They were the central midfield pairing in a flat four midfield. That's a 20 & 18 year old, both inexperienced and also lightweight. Because of that and along with the tactics set out by McMenemy, both De Jong and Ott had to play slightly more defensive midfield roles which they're both not really used to. They definitely did their best. And for me De Jong should be playing out wide.

Gier -
He's a right back and McMenemy played him as a center back, meaning he's out of position. It's quite obvious that he wasn't that comfortable playing that role and you can't exactly fault him for that.

Younghusband bros. -
Like you said, they don't play club football anymore and they're out of form and shape. More so with Phil since he was playing through injury and hasn't been involved with the national team since May 2008. However, they're still two of the better players that can be called up for the national team.

Jonsson -
I'm actually surprised your expectations of him were high. I've said this before, he's only semi-pro playing in the Icelandic league and is also on wrong side of 30. He's also a fullback, so you wouldn't really expect him to contribute that much offensively. He was definitely trying to make things happen but it was also his teammates that didn't do him any favors. For me, Jonsson along with Etheridge were the most consistent players.

Etheridge -
Definitely good. It was his defenders that let him down at times.

To top it all off, I don't think they've gelled yet as a team.

So again, they did their best given the circumstances but I also believe they got a bit lucky. Like McMenemy said, they got overconfident for the Laos match after beating Timor-Leste and it showed but managed to qualify nonetheless.HasThisBeenTakennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-48783613001582744342010-10-27T19:21:33.438+02:002010-10-27T19:21:33.438+02:00@clockwork
Sorry, but thats just plain stupid. Th...@clockwork

Sorry, but thats just plain stupid. The real future of Philippine football is actually local players if the PFF and etc manage to get their acts together. Who knows how long Palami will support the team, and when he is gone, who will step up and finance the team? We cant depend on some rich guy for all eternity. We need changes. Dont say we need Palami as president, coz we dont really know what kind of role he wants. Maybe the role he has now is what suits him best and what he wants.

Yes those local guys you mentioned are good, but there are actually talented players in the Philippines who can evolve and be better than them. The recruitment of fil-foreigners is only a quick fix. Not all of them will be available, and if Palami wasnt around, would they be playing? Not sure.

@HasThis...

Still a possibility that they can play if their team is out of the playoffs, the Greatwich brothers i mean. That would give the team a boost.

As for what im not satisfied with. Well, i thought they could do better. Neil was great, but players like Ott, and specially Ray didnt impress at all. I had big expactiations when it comes to Ray. He didnt contribute much.

Ott was like a kid playing with the bigger guys. He needs to toughen up a lot. In the physical aspects of the game, he doesnt quite have it yet, im talking about international games. It will be a lot tougher in December, and what he showed wont cut it a bit. I had no expactations to the Younghusbands coz they havent been playing games for 2 years, and that can really set you back. But theyve stayed in shape with their academy and workouts. Phil is still far away from his best form, hopefully he will regain some of his form from years ago. We will need a Phil Y in top shape in December. Jason De Jong tried and tried. Maybe CM isnt the position for him.

Thats just my person view on how i see things. I feel we got lucky. But there are always room for improvement. Hopefully the management has a good plan for the following months.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-6826595364099319542010-10-27T11:14:49.808+02:002010-10-27T11:14:49.808+02:00^^Agreed! I think McMenemy also has the same sentiments since it was quite apparent that he wasn't really keen on playing the other locals during the qualifiers.

Etheridge got his first yellow against Laos.

As for the Greatwich bros, I think the most realistic one we can get would be Chris. Both Phil and Simon have their commitments to their respective colleges, both for academics and their soccer teams as the NCAA men's soccer is in season right now.

And to answer the anonymous person above.....

Chris Greatwich plays for Morris County Colonials in New Jersey, USA. An amateur team playing in the highest amateur league, the NPSL. But apparently he's also a full-time coach with the club, as he coaches their U-20 team. Although, I'm not sure if he's still attached to them or not.

And I'd just like to ask why you weren't impressed with the foreign based players? Granted, the entire team wasn't that great but they did the best they could especially with the circumstances such as the system and roles they played.HasThisBeenTakennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-66507193410804435262010-10-26T22:34:37.407+02:002010-10-26T22:34:37.407+02:00The foreign based pinoys have done a tremendous jo...The foreign based pinoys have done a tremendous job. De Jongs club released him now, so there is a chance.

When it comes to Jerry, kinda hard to tell really. Does Chris Greatwich still play? Last i heard is that he works in the US. They should get the Greatwich brothers if possible and if theyre fit. Phil Greatwich can play instead of Del Rosario and you got Ray on the other side. Thats not bad, in case Schrock cant make it.

Im not really impressed by some of the fil-foreigners in this qualifier, but hey, it can only get better right. I wonder what the plans are now until the main tournament.

I feel we got lucky this time. But we will take what is given to us. I'm not not not gonna say much about it. All I will say is that it is almost certain or even 100% certain that the Philippines will get another increase. So, an early well done to them for that.

However, it is a common misconception within the Philippine football community (if that's the right term), that the FIFA rankings is used as the main measuring stick to measure the improvement/progress or the lack of, of the national team and even Philippine football in general since local football is connected with the national team. That shouldn't be the case. Even Mari Martinez has used the excuse of the Philippines' rise in the ranking to justify his "contributions" in "helping" Philippine football. You need to be a little more open minded than that and look at the bigger picture to see the actual scenario. That's all. That's not bashing, that's not hating and that's not being negative.

Just to add, with the regards to the tournament proper of the Suzuki Cup, don't expect too much because for these qualifiers, it seems the expectations were already a bit high. As you should know, the Philippines' chances of making any sort of significant impact at the tournament isn't realistic yet. The aim should be to be as competitive as possible and anything more than that would be a bonus. And once again, that is not hating, that is not bashing and that is not being negative.HasThisBeenTakennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-44075323127149514932010-10-26T13:46:37.299+02:002010-10-26T13:46:37.299+02:00Laos - Timor Leste 2-1 after 15 minsLaos - Timor Leste 2-1 after 15 minsjonnyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17721398772806838546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-61161685104854586542010-10-26T13:42:18.665+02:002010-10-26T13:42:18.665+02:00Laos - Timor Leste 1-1 after 10 minsLaos - Timor Leste 1-1 after 10 minsjonnyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17721398772806838546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-43100643609154768272010-10-26T13:29:45.402+02:002010-10-26T13:29:45.402+02:00thats right, to the anonymous guy on top. i know s...thats right, to the anonymous guy on top. i know some spoil sport party pooper here will say that it aint important and is misleading... but cmon... try looking at the bigger picture now. it will be much easier to sell it to the public if our ranking is a lot pleasing... like 140th or 130th. lets keep climbing up!

when will the updated rankings table come out?boobleheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11035584949062133894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4558039822687564906.post-56436545892033006112010-10-26T13:27:46.902+02:002010-10-26T13:27:46.902+02:00Thats right, I go for the good rankings also...
